Novak reminds me of the toughest chess computer who can usually defeat even the greatest human player of all time. Extremely high quality match. Federer snapped in the 3rd set tiebreak. On numerous occasions, when the matches against Novak became tight in the final stages, Roger's backhand would fail him. Just a couple of errors would be enough to lose.

Second, Federer's resume is more balanced than Nadal's. Nadal has too many wins at the French, and not so many on the other surfaces. Federer has proven that, on the whole, he's a better player on the other surfaces, notwithstanding a few bitter losses to Nadal (such as at Wimbledon 2008 and Australian 2009). Also: in the last few years, he defeated Nadal quite consistently on several surfaces, Nadal no longer being able to pick on his backhand.

It shows that he is not as allround as Federer and Djokovic and hasn't shown the same level of consistency during the year and dominance over the complete field. Nadal usually is non existent after the US Open and primarily dominates the clay season. And the weak era is a non argument because Nadal has played in pretty much the same competition as Federer has for most of his top 10 career.

    • This. The decline of Federer's FH compromising his ability to be the right competitive level in this match-up is not discussed all that much. Harder to dictate, harder to wrestle control of the rally/find winners off of neutral balls, etc. Also, USO15 was when I really started to notice that he was slower moving to his FH side. It's really evident here.

      @sawgames8623@sawgames8623Ай бұрын
    • @@sawgames8623 This doesn't hold up to real scrutiny. You can see from a basic eye test that Federer's movement and power on his forehand was in decline years prior to this match. Watch the Federer vs Roddick match from 2006, as a good example of it at its peak. You can find endless forum discussions on it from 2008-2010. Federer was fielding retirement questions in 2009 such was the consensus that he'd lost a step. It's an inconvenience for marketing's sake, but Federer and Djokovic weren't true contemporaries. Federer in this match is older than Djokovic is now, playing one of the best athletes of all time (any sport) at a point barely past his peak (this isn't peak Djokovic).

      @jwt-nu3ei@jwt-nu3ei20 күн бұрын
    • @@jwt-nu3ei No, the eye test above all else shows that Roddick hit short, low-quality groundstrokes all the time seemingly out of nowhere. The match you referred to, which I'm assuming is the 2006 USO final, is a good example of that. I'm re-watching the full match highlights right now and Roddick hits an unacceptably high proportion of shallow groundstrokes. Use your eyes. This trend did not change much over the course of his career. The 2009 AO semifinal was the same. Again, use your eyes. His power only seemingly looked like it was in decline because his playstyle gets derailed by players who can defend while consistently hitting deep in the court. Actually watch the games and not just the highlights and you'll see what I mean. Federer's rally balls are weak when his winners-on-command aren't enabled by weak groundstrokes from his opponent. You could even see that in the 2006 match whenever Roddick managed to hit deep. Federer's swings would truncate his swings and spray errors or defer to a rally stroke. Again, use. Your. Eyes. Also, teenage Djokovic, Murray, and Nadal all won a higher percentage of sets against Federer from 2004-2007 than Agassi, Hewitt, Roddick, or Safin did. How is that not strong evidence that 2004-2007 was weak, that teenagers (absolutely nowhere near their peaks) from the next generation were outperforming Federer's main rivals from his own generation? And how is Djokovic and Federer being different ages even valid? Should Federer's wins against baby Djokovic now be discarded? What is old? ELO suggests that Federer was playing roughly equal to his 2004 and 2008 levels (but not 2006-07) roughly up until his retirement. They were contemporaries in everything besides age. They were both playing consistently close to prime level for the majority of their careers' overlap. If Federer was truly superior, he should have won against Djokovic more.

  • In the GOAT discussion, it is important to take into consideration relevant facts that both Roger & Rafa have had EIGHT significant advantages to help them over Novak in their tennis careers. The so called “objective” experts, analysts, commentators and media generally fail to mention this. Both Roger & Rafa grew up in privileged environments in Switzerland and Spain with proper facilities to learn and train. Novak grew in a poor war torn country with almost no facilities to learn or train. In fact his parents had to schedule his training to avoid constant bombing raids. Both Roger & Rafa had easy soft childhoods with little or no pressure place on them in their affluent environments. Novak grew up poor and his parents invested all they had for his career. Novak knew at an early age tennis for him was a duty, not simply a privilege or for fun. He fully understood before he was a teenager the massive weight place on his shoulders of his whole family depending on him to succeed in his pro career Both Roger & Rafa started their careers 5 & 2 years before Novak, which gave both of them a big head start in the race for GOAT. Both Roger & Rafa had the backing of the billion dollar industry of the big sponsors pushing the narrative of them being the best. Both Roger & Rafa had the backing of the TV commentators to continue to push the narrative of them being the best. Both Roger & Rafa had the backing of the media to promote them as the most popular and best ever. Novak was generally ignored or dismissed. Both Roger & Rafa had the backing of the Internet analysts to promote them. Novak was generally shunned most of his career Both Roger & Rafa had the backing of the court-side fans. During his entire career, anytime Novak played against Roger or Rafa, 90-98% of the crowds favored them over Novak. In fact, the hostile crowds many times constantly tried to harass, taunt, and disrupt Novak during course of his matches against both Roger & Rafa. It is absolutely astonishing when you consider the fact that Novak has reached the pinnacle as the GOAT in tennis inspite of the significant

    • I honestly think that greatness is something that doesn’t just depend on figures, of Novak being ahead in the H2H or whatever. To me, Rafa and especially Roger have a way of conducting themselves on the court that speaks volumes about their humility and the inspiration they bring to millions of fans. Novak just… wins. I can’t see anything in him that’s as admirable as Roger, his playing style, his aggressive behaviour on court and his cringeworthy celebration after winning is just incomparable to the others. I can’t really define it any further, but real greatness is not to be found in winning alone. It’s a way of conducting yourself and your influence on others, not just your stats against other players. Also you see that Novak is the only one to measure himself only in relation to Rafa and Roger, how often he’s beaten them and whatnot whilst Roger and Rafa still seem to be in their own league…. Idk

Djokovic and Nadal were beasts when they were teenagers, already no2,3 while Federer is not even in the top 10 at 20. If Djokovic were 6 years older and played in the era where the 2nd best player is Roddick, he would start winning at 19 and Federer will be even further behind
