  • The whole reason the defender is told to stand there is to put the keeper off, simple as that. Fabianski probably wouldn't have saved it, but it's a massive distraction having someone stood right in front of you and hinders the ability to dive properly, he was offside, end of.

  • I love how people are trying to say someone isn’t offside if the goalkeeper wasn’t going to save it. What kind of rubbish is that? So every time Messi hits an unstoppable shot it’s fine to have someone blocking the keeper in an offside position because he wasn’t gonna save it? There have been some terrible VAR decisions this season but this isn’t one of them.

  • Wolves player cheated regarding Emerson’s goal getting it overturned. There was almost zero contact and the cheat went over and rolled around rubbing his calf which was never touched by Emerson. The wolves disallowed goal was off side because the player intended to affect play by staying in front of fabianski while in an off side position. Had the player moved aside or turned away from play showing no intent to affect play then maybe the goal would not have stood. It’s the wolves player at fault for not realising the situation.

  • I have no axe to grind either way, but the position of the Wolves' player, ie: standing within touching distance of the opposing team's goalkeeper and facing directly away from the goal and all times, can only be interpreted as him deliberately wanting🎉 to impead the goalkeeper. This may be "all part of the modern game", but it is cheating and the sooner it is stamped out the better. Well done to the referee for taking a stand.

Offside has become a matter of opinion, handball has become a matter of opinion, even fouls are subjective (has there been sufficient contact for a player to go down). When it comes down to a matter of opinion, there will always be disagreement. Fix the rules first.

It still comes down to human decisions, some will be 100% nailed down while others certainly go into a grey zone that will not make everyone happy. Until true AI can be set up with a standard algorithm for every scenario there will always be debate. The rules show that any interference is offside and he was blocking the view and positioning of the goalkeeper, its offside. As for VAR, I think Souness is right and wrong, if you look at the stats provided by PGMOL it shows very high levels of correct decisions by referees, Souness is just saying things without substance - but he is right in that the issue isnt VAR its the rules, in the Wolves situation VAR wasnt the thing everyone should have been moaning at

With regard to any alleged increase in complaints about VAR decisions, all you have to do is ask (and answer) one question: how many West Ham players (or management) were unhappy about the Wolves goal being disallowed? Yet, next week it will be the turn of Hammers players to revolt en masse. Souness is right about the need to employ ex-players, though. A no brainer.

  • It isn't offside. 1. You can't be offside from a corner. 2. So the point to look at this for offside is when Kilman heads the ball & only then. 3. At this point the goalkeeper can clearly see the ball. 4. The goalkeeper isn't obstructed at point of contact by Kilman. 5. The ball goes nowhere near Chirewa. 6. The goalkeeper can move left, right, in front of Chirewa etc, but chooses not to. 7. Chirewa isn't obstructing the goalkeeper & hasn't prevented him getting to the ball at point of contact from Kilman. Goal should have stood.

    • Absolute rubbish. Not a single point made there was valid. You must be watching basketball or playing by Aussie rules.

    • How can you say that he isn’t obstructing the goalie when he’s literally standing on his toes. Maybe you should look at the goal Caicedo scored against Tottenham from 30 yards out that was disallowed by VAR for Jackson offside standing on the 18 yard line and not being in front of the keeper

    • @@markst.george4913 Nah not rubbish, but facts, based on truth and the laws of the game of football. Not my rules. The officials got it wrong. Goal should have stood. Forget what's happening before corner is taken, that's irrelevant, it's from when ball hits Kilman's head & from that moment every point made is valid and true. It's not offside by the laws of the game, you are only seeing a player stood in an offside position and getting confused. The goalkeeper's vison was not obstructed and he wasn't obstructed to getting to the ball in anyway from the moment it hits Kilman's head, which from a corner is the only point you can look for an offside. The ball goes nowhere near Chirewa and goalkeeper isn't obstructed in any way shape or form. Goal should stand based on current law.

  • Just look at what players do to the Tottenham goalkeeper during corners that refs and VAR completely ignore. Yet for reasons unknown here, they choose to involve themselves! Pathetic.

  • I'm a no one Simon & I can live perfectly fine without any kind of mobile phone, never mind a bloody iPhone 15. Likewise, as an old fella, I lived just fine, enjoying football matches over many a year without VAR & its ruinous effect on that enjoyment. A referee's decision being final was simple & effective & it could still be...'cept, like the unnecessary gadget you compare it to, it's all about money these days of course.
