So after doing a livestream the other day, it was suggested that I ought to review the new season of Doctor Who, starting with the fourth episode "Arachnids in the UK." And what an experience it was...

    • You should do Drinker recommends for Breaking Bad. Yes, it's already old show, but it's also the only show that had great pilot, and from that point on, constantly got better and better. Though it's the one show you shouldn't watch drunk, because it's full of important or enhancing details. Drinker needs to be positive once in a while, like you have been, so that the complaining is more effective. Anyway, I'll go away now!

The same thing that happened to Ghostbusters, Star Trek, Star Wars, and more: the people in charge assumed the pre-existing fans would be along for the ride *no matter what,* and that they were thus free not merely to ignore said fans but to actively *attack* them in pursuit of new audiences. The results so far do not suggest that this is a particularly good strategy on either the business or creative fronts, but the lesson clearly has not yet penetrated the dense skulls of _H. hollywoodus_ and its closely-related subspecies in the UK.

    • It’s the perfect allegory of how Trump actually didn’t do a bad job a President. We had a great economy with the lowest unemployment rate in history, peace in the Middle East and overall good foreign relations, and much more, but the Left only knows “orange man bad!” At least Trump fulfilled his promises, like building a border wall, unlike every other politician today.

      @gwgh@gwgh2 жыл бұрын
    • @@gwgh I mean, that wall has and will cost billions of dollars for something that can be countered by a ladder. And as for the economy thing, maybe, but homelessness had already been steadily decreasing since 2009, so I don’t know if we can give him credit for that. On the other hand, the national debt and income inequality have continued to increase, and his policy for the coronavirus was to do nothing because it would slow the economy. And that’s kind of the issue. He’s a businessman, but how many businessmen are worried about their workers. A country should not be a business. As for “good foreign relations”, he tried to make friends with Russia and then we learned that during his term they were microwaving US embassies. As for peace in the Middle East, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is still going on today, and the UAE deal was just a formal treaty between countries who were already at peace. And there are so many other things I could discuss, but I don’t think it’s worth it anymore because he’s out of office. I just want you to know that we have been fed entirely different information.

This was the same show with the Doctor discussing the concept of faith and human nature in literal hell as he is about to meet the conceptual embodiment of the Devil. It is like Moffat's Sherlock, who he morphed into a socially incompetent wreck who can't help grievously offending people at morning tea or a wedding reception, never mind any delicate situation which he would face all the time in his chosen profession. Now the classical character clearly has one major interest, crime solving, and most people come far behind. But he's sensitive, witty, and persuasive when the situation demands and that's how he has to be. He's not some super modern lab wiz who can analyze who farted in and how many times in the room that week, a huge part of his work is understanding people, their motivations, little tells, everything. Sherlock would be terrible at his job if he was the socially clueless jackass Moffat made him.

    • "Captain Jack Harkness, and who are you." Jack kind of did wear his sexuality on his sleeve but John Barrowman was so much fun to watch that he still managed to be awesome. He also showed that he could pull off darker performances in Torchwood which resulted in Jack being one of the most fleshed out companions, despite his limited screen time on Doctor Who itself. Chinballs did him dirty by dragging him into his trainwreck. I wish Jack been brought back during Moffat's era. That man had flaws but in my mind, he was the George Lucas of Doctor Who with the only major differences being that Moffat's an atheist while Lucas believes in God and Moffat didn't build Doctor Who from the ground up. The reason I say he was like Lucas is because he had to deal with some pretty vicious backlashes during his time as show runner, not to the same extent as Lucas but still more than he deserved, and despite that, he never lashed out at the fans, never stopped caring about Doctor Who and was willing to make changes based on how the fans reacted to his decisions. He also knew how to write compelling characters and apparently, Jack was meant to be in A Good Man Goes to War. That episode is still awesome without him but it would have been great to see him interacting with Matt Smith's Doctor.

      @tomnorton4277@tomnorton42772 жыл бұрын
    • I think my mom made some careful attempts to distract me from those scenes since we watched those Captain Jack episodes while folding laundry or they just went over my head as a kid, but the thing about Jack is that his sexuality is almost comedic relief, it's not important or critical to the story and they're not going to give him a gay sex/makeout scene in the middle of an episode or whatever. That being said, some of the pointless gay inclusion scenes are dotted throughout the series even when it was still good. "Put a lesbian couple in this flying car even though it doesn't add anything to the plot", "Have a scene where the 1920s character secretly meets up with his gay lover just before meeting Agatha Christy", "Make this random guy who gets his head cut off be in a gay relationship", it's insulting because you know the intention is to just pretend they added some meaningless diversity to the show. I wasn't a fan of the gay kiss scene in the Jodie Whitaker episode but at least I had to admit it was ballsy, meanwhile, the other gay references are just pointless lip service. "Hey, just a reminder that gay people exist! Hey, just a reminder that gay people exist! Hey, just a reminder that gay people exist!", have you ever considered maybe I'm tired of hearing that message in my living room repeated to me over and over again? Why can't I just forget gay people exist for a total of forty-five minutes? I think these days gay people take up more space and more time in my head than my own family at this point. But at least... at _least_ Captain Jack's pansexual thing is played up to where it's sort of funny. It's not like we don't have reason to respect him either or trash his masculinity, he does actual masculine things worthy of praise. That the character did kinky stuff in bed didn't matter to the story because they otherwise functioned as a character that worked. The kinky stuff was just a funny addition.

    • It's because she's never been a Doctor Who fan nor did she study the show or research the character after landing the part. She mainly emulated the Doctor played by her friend and Broadchurch co-star David Tennant. It reminds me of a cutaway scene from Family Guy where Ben Affleck had 20 minutes to get ready to play Henry VIII, and all he does is say "'ello" in a British accent a few times before he decides he's ready after nailing the accent.

    • Yes, and that lack of knowledge shows in how her version looks and acts like a complete novice. With all the previous Doctors, I believed that this was an ancient being who merely looked young and acted wacky (especially in Matt Smith's case), because they could show that gravitas and darkness you would expect from a veteran. I didn't think for one second that this Doctor was an evolution of Capaldi's Doctor, the way they treated her (and the tone of the show itself) was as a complete reboot rather than the next stage in a beloved franchise. The really sad thing was when people inevitably claimed the backlash was from the Doctor becoming a woman. No, Missy was a perfectly good evolution of the Master because Michelle Gomez made you believe in her character's age and power (in addition to generally being more charismatic and having decent lines). The backlash was because the acting, writing, tone, direction, you name it, were all terrible.

  • I'm more pissed that the 'first female doctor' had to be the one that is the lecture train and even before this, Dr. Who has had more than its fair share of episodes that were lecture heavy in some form of another. That's the thing that I can't stand about gender bending and this is coming from a woman. Even with your commentary, have you noticed that people who do gender flipping just make the characters LECTURE? A LOT? If we're going to b 100% honest, if all they concerned themselves with being just changing the characters' gender and NOT their attitude, Jodie would not be acting like this. Ghostbusters 2016 would have had the characters actually act human, Rey would have been allowed to have an adventure but it's not like that. Whenever a female or any other minority is switched out from the original, their new ability seems to be the ability to bore everyone to death with community college 101 levels of political discussion, as if whoever is writing this shit assumes that the people these swaps line up with WANT this shit. This is what pisses me off about Karens and their orbiters getting into a hobby that I've been in for years; they don't represent me and what they want to claim I like is shit I got into comics, manga, animation, and games to get away from. I got into my 'geek shit' to get away from the heavy-handed shit that we're seeing now. That's not to say that I didn't like politics, history or other serious subjects but I took them a lot more seriously in matters where they could be handled maturely or in a way where it felt like everyone could get their say and mind out about it, considering how a lot of these matters effect peoples lives, much more so than whether or not a character has a vag or balls in a show. And I hate seeing that the only way to write a 'minority' character is by just turning them into a preach fest where other characters must bow down to their whims, including ones that I already liked and didn't care if they were white dudes. All these writers are doing is showing that minority characters aren't allowed to have fun.

Then, because the character is supposed to be both "empowered" and "relateable", the writers need to bend the plot around this bland character so they're constantly portrayed as being perfect, yet with a sticky veneer of forced humility. It's making me immediately suspicious of "minority" characters in franchises, where - a few years ago - i didn't really notice race, gender, or sexuality. This practice is kneecapping the concepts of diversity and anti-discrimination, and it's really stupid.

There used to be female heroes with male lackeys who were total feebs, but still worth watching. Buffy had Xander. Xena had Joxer. Relic Hunter had Nigel. And all of these shows were well written and worth watching. What happened to those writers? Dr who, Star Wars , and everything else seems deliberately sabotaged. ..

They specifically hired a bunch of "political writers" for this show. In other words, unimaginative people who've never written anything sci-fi or fantasy, have probably little to no clue about the franchise and are only capable of producing political dribble. On top of that, most of these writers have very few writing credits to begin with. So the outcome shouldn't be surprising. The idea clearly was to profit from all the virtue signaling and politicizing, but the reality is, nobody will watch if the result is bad.

  • This episode is hilarious. It's so inept that it becomes a brilliant satire of its own satire. The script tries to vilify the actions of "Mr. Big" while skirting around the fact that the main characters fail to come up with any complete solutions of their own, and just hopes we haven't noticed the blatant holes in their own "moral" arguments while deflecting 100% of the blame to Mr. Strawman. In something more self-aware, it could have been clever. As is, Series 11 was a major low for the franchise, and structurally this episode is a total train wreck, but I'd happily watch it again with friends on bad movie night.

Adric, Nyssa & Tegan & they had Turlough come into it after Adric died & just before Nyssa left Technically, Kamelion was also a companion while Tegan & Turlough were still onboard, but he was severely underutilised & only made his second appearance after Tegan left, then he died & Turlough left which whittled the companions back down to 1, Peri. Who dumps dead spiders or any other biological experiment in the one coal mine in Britain that has such toxic waste? That's not mindful disposal at all. Why is starving and/or suffocating spiders less inhumane than shooting them? I'm certain a good shot in the right spot is far quicker and less agonizing than struggling to breathe up to death. Emphysema comes to mind - nothing light about it.

Pretty sure when Moffat was behind the helm, he was using the Doctor as self-insert fanfiction.

    • It also doesn't help that he loves his mystery boxes when in charge of an entire season and much like Abrams with Lost the reveal always ends up disappointing for the amount of time spent on it. Moffat's single episodes were mostly great when Davies had overall control since he didn't have the luxury of wasting the audience's time and had to reveal any mysteries within the time frame of a single episode.

    • I think Moffat explored that idea of the Doctor getting too big, too loud, and showed the consequences; which wasn't an area RTD wanted to go in. Moffat wrote some brilliant episodes, and I'd defend a lot of his creative decisions. I can tell you, if he had been writing Jodie's first season he would have made it work.

    • @@AlbertonBeastmaster I actually stopped watching it after Peter Capaldi's first season, mostly because they took it off Netflix right after, and I couldn't afford any channels with it, but the final season with the Ponds was just so much build up and almost no payoff. Great ideas that were complete messes.

  • God I miss the old dr who. I haven't watched in years, but I still remember episodes from the original shows and the reboot with cool and moving and scary plots with emotional performances.

  • If you want to watch the new Who, start at the begining. Christopher Eccleson's docter was practically designed for new and returning fans.

  • Set in Sheffield in 2019 this would be a short episode in reality. The Doctor would just stand on the third floor of a tower block and watch the spiders drown.
