  • Great video Matt! I run Falken Wildpeak AT3's on my "Highlux", 31/10.5x15 I agree totally with what you were saying about running an AT tyre as opposed to an MT. I have run mud tyres before which were great in the mud however, most of my driving these days is on road. I do like being able to venture off road whenever I get the chance and as you said, drive to the conditions. I was going to go for a mud tyre but decided at the last minute to go with an AT instead and I'm glad that I did. Your video could pretty much cover any brand of tyre as the principal is the same.

  • Another detailed review Matt. I run these same tyres, 33inch, on my 105 Cruiser. Coming from a Toyo Open Country AT, I find these are almost a middle ground between a standard AT and muddies. A bit more aggressive for off-road but still nice on the bitumen. Some Tyre manufacturers starting to call this style of tyre a Rough Terrain RT. About 5000 kms into my set, about 1k of off-road use. No noticeable noise increase and still smooth. Everything you said about terrain type was spot on. Sand driving is very good. Bag out real nice, I've only had mine down to 15psi and that was more than enough to climb Big Sandy at Byfield NP. Thanks for the vids mate. Always good and can't wait to see the Bundy get an overhaul.

  • Agree with your summation, Matster. AT's for 99% of your time in the high country will work just as well as a more aggressive MT. But, if it rains overnight and you are in clay country, it's game over. They will not clear orange clay. With regard to your high speed dirt roads at 80 km/h, did you experiment with different running pressures? Say, 30 psi, then 26 then 24 or even 22psi, to determine the best dirt running pressure? Although, 22 may be a tad too soft at 80 klicks.

  • My basic thoughts are a a/t in standard size for general day to day use and a larger m/t for when you want to head bush and get a bit more serious. Amazing where a pk ranger on standard sized falken wild peak a/ts can go if driven smartly.

  • Great review. I run this exact tyre and size set up on my gu patrol, and yes they are very smooth and quiet on the road which is nice. ive found off road they are still very capable but do agree with your comments about the mud, they can be quik to slide and loose traction, aswell as sliding into ruts. just need to be a bit more careful in said environment. otherwise awesome tyres! and NO more wobbles in the steering at all either.

  • Great review. I had my tire choice narrowed down to these or the BFG KO2. I've had the KO2s on other large SUVs (Tahoe's & Yukon's) and loved them. Going into a Gladiator Mojave I was looking for an all around performer with light weight and better price point which these tires have. I look forward to the 10k follow up review. Cheers

    @sellickusa@sellickusa Жыл бұрын
    • For me, in Mongolia, the price did it. 1300 Euro for 6 Maxxis AT vs 2000 Euro for the KO2. The dif is huge for hopefully not a huge difference between the 2. Aside of that, i expect to change 2 tires a year due to rough circumstances. That adds up. I've not driven on them yet. But hope i won't regret my decision.

  • I’ve been four wheel driving since 1978 (and still am) and in that time l’ve tried many of the reputable tyres on the market. My impressions on All Terrain Tyres are, in the main, very good, they do as advertised. As with any and all tyres, there are pros and cons to consider, of which you have already explained very well in this video. I have two sets of wheels and tyres and use them according to what type of terrain and conditions l expect to be using them in. It is very convenient to have the luxury of both All Terrain & Mud Terrain Tyres at my disposal. For the most part, the All Terrain Tyres are fit for most situations but for seriously rough gravel roads and steep muddy hill climbs such as the Victorian High County, especially when towing a trailer, there is only one choice and that is Mud Terrain Tyres. Maximum grip is paramount in these environments and conditions. My go to Tyres for sand driving is the All Terrain Tyres. The Mud Terrain Tyres can cope reasonably well in sand surprisingly enough but the All Terrain Tyres are my choice for sand. Gravel roads tend to chew All Terrain Tyres up much quicker, due to the smaller gaps between the tread blocks, not so much with the Mud Terrain Tyres. Its a case of, different horses for different courses…

  • Hi Matt. I also have a Landcruiser 105 series. After a lot of deliberation, I chose Maxxis AT s, but I went for a size similar to the Toyota factory size. Living in Melbourne we get a fair bit of rain and as this is my daily drive, I wanted a tyre that would be good on wet bitumen as well as off-road. I am impressed with how much grip I have in the wet, and I always feel confident that my vehicle will pull up when I need it to. They also feel stable when travelling on loose gravel roads. I love these tyres and hope that I get many kilometres from them. Thanks for the video, as always a balanced review. MP

I absolutely love them, sooooo much better than the previous BFG K02's l was running. Really good on the black stuff in the wet, even at 40psi and while they do clog up in the mud- being an AT tyre, if you get the wheels spinning they eject it pretty well. Unfortunately the 120 is off the road for a bit as l start prep on it for some big trips planned later this year but I'm really glad you did this review, confirming what l felt about the Maxxis Razr AT.

  • I have these exact same tyres including size on my HJ47 and have done around 15000km and they have been going great. I do a lot of rural fencing which means I’m in a lot of muddy, steep and rocky paddocks with a big load and they are chalk and cheese compared to my old crappy cheap tyres I used to run. Definitely go with them again. Even fixed the death wobble that no one seemed to be able to diagnose after countless re balancing and alignments.

  • Mine are also fairly new at less than 2000km. Did a pretty steep rutted slippery climb recently after a solid night of rain around the Kenilworth area - dropped them down to 18psi - and I was actually surprised at how well they did. I was expecting to be sliding around like in your video, but it didn’t happen. I replaced a set of Cooper ST Maxx and I’ve got to say so far I’m much preferring the Maxxis Razr AT’s. We shouldn’t be having an MT vs AT discussion here - they’re different tyres for different applications, but comparing mud performance to other AT tyres, these perform brilliantly. I am a little concerned about how well they’ll wear, so keen to hear the long term review and from others with a bit of wear down range.

One cooler morning I do believe a may have had slight flat spots in the tyres but these ran out after only a few kms of driving. I have a 3.5T van coming soon so I'm hoping the car will handle as it currently does which I'm extremely happy with. I was waiting on some Nitto Ridge Grapplers but after a 4 month wait decided to try the Maxxis ATs instead. I found they were a little noisier on bitumen than my highway terrains which they replaced but they got quieter after the first couple thousand km. • Got them on my 02 Grand Cherokee V8. About 1500ks on them so far. Due to where I live in NZ, I do a lot of sand. They work very well there as you would think. There are 2 versions of these and I have the heavier LT one. Yesterday we did a farm Safari that had more wet clay and mud than expected. IMO they performed very well. I had them at 25psi. We had one hard LH turn up a wet clay bank that a good few were failing at. I let the V8 sing and we crawled up just fine. Maybe try some different pressures in the mud? I would like some muddies but dont do enough to warrant them.

  • What I'm hearing is that if tackling off road tracks is secondary to touring/commuting in your vehicle then you should get an AT, but if you're primary intention is to tackle hard 4x4 tracks then go for a MT? Is that about right? My 4x4 is my only off road vehicle and I use it for everything but I love hitting the harder tracks. Because performance in hard tracks is a priority for me, I'd think MTs are still a good idea. I do have a second smaller road car for day to day commuting too so that adds to the algebra I think.

  • Glad you did not try to push the car for testing its tyres here in Ballina area- on the open road given most days you will be hard pressed to get past 60km/hr. You do need good brakes though because despite no one on a roundabout or on an open road people suddenly brake for no reason often from their pet 60km/hr to almost stand still! LOLLZZZ. By the way despite this you pass more highway patrol and mobile speed cameras than anywhere else especially where there has been a few accidents. Figure that!
