I have a quick Trick for situations like this. I never get stuck anymore. I bought 6 links of Chain at Home Depot Cut to fit threw the Rims and around the Tire and use a heavy duty Quick connect from Home Depot also. You can buy them right next to the Chain section. All I usually need is 2 of these chains put on the drive axle and I’m rollin. It’s very quick to run them threw the rim and use the quick connect and your done. I would not go down the road with them though because they are not DOT certified. But when your stuck at a customer or a truck stop or rest area they will save your ass. Once you get rolling stop in a good spot and take them off. I have 6 pieces but never need that many.

As a non-truck driver, I'm pretty surprised that a major truck stop like that didn't put forth more of an effort at snow removal. My family used to be a fast food franchisee, and if we had multiple people stuck in our lots for hours due to heavy snow, I'd have been on the phone to our plow contractor non-stop.

The dolly brakes is simply a little lever on either the dash or the steering column (depends on truck) that you pull down to only apply brakes to the trailer brakes. The only times I use them is when I’m locking in my tandems (trailer axles) after sliding them forward or backwards.

I was originally going to stay at that rest stop Sunday night then head to my pickup Monday morning. Im glad i didn't. I stopped at the pa welcome center instead. Im also glad the first big purchase i made as a driver was to buy my own set of tire chains. You'd be amazed how many carriers operate in the northeast and dont have snow chains because they think that its not Colorado so why do we need them. In dec i put on brand new snow tires on my drives and steers because I already know, winter hits the northeast hard in jan and feb so i have to be ready to drive in some shitty weather. And Monday morning i crawled out of my parking spot with 2 ft of snow, got to my pickup 8 mins away , got loaded, and headed to mass. Its amazing what good tires will do for you.

in BC Canada Most highways require you to carry chains from October 1st to April 30th. CVSE will check for them if they pull you over and if you spin out and don't have them they get a little testy. I drove a plow truck for about five years and I have lost count of the number of times I have given truck drivers lessons on how to put on chains. My favourite was the guy trying to jack up his rear axle to get them on. The time I did on the highway with super B's and logging I learned how nice full lockers are. You have the right idea though sit back relax and wait till it's cleared up. great video.

To the new drivers out there...NEVER set your trailer brakes in these types of conditions. They will likely freeze on you and getting them freed up is a major pain in the ass. That's possibly what happened to the guy across from the videographer. It's also possible the brakes on your drive wheels will freeze, but it is much easier to get them free.
@StanleySchmengie2 жыл бұрын
I have had them argue with me when I tell them that. They like to tell me it's not safe or it will break something lol
@MarkHerndon2 жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely right. Something to add too, and keep in mind, if you shut the truck off, many trucks have a VERY minor bleeding of the air, just not so much so it’s noticeable when running or even off for a short period, but in the cold that air will bleed off faster and even if you don’t physically set the trailer brakes, once that air gets low enough, they’ll set em anyway. One of the benefits to idling if you can. Otherwise you might wake up after using only your bunk heater for warmth, to find frozen trailer brakes that you didn’t even intentionally set.
@survivetothrive212 жыл бұрын
Once your brakes cool down you can set them without having to worry about them freezing up. If they have any moisture in the drums and you set them right off you will be under your trailer with a hammer beating them loose.

The only time you are going to see a winch on the front bumper of a tractor trailer is if it does a lot of offroad operations, like oil field work for instance. Many companies and operators carry tire chains in the winter, and most of the western mountain states require them to be carried in the winter months or the driver/company can be fined, even if it is sunny and the roads are clean and dry.

Genius 🧠
As a non-truck driver, I'm pretty surprised that a major truck stop like that didn't put forth more of an effort at snow removal. My family used to be a fast food franchisee, and if we had multiple people stuck in our lots for hours due to heavy snow, I'd have been on the phone to our plow contractor non-stop.
It was pretty baffling to all of us, too. They eventually contracted ONE backhoe lol.
Another of them are like this.nothing new
Pretty hard to do snow removal when the parking lot is full of vehicles. Besides, where are you going to go in a snowstorm.
It’s TA. They’re the lowest form of chain truck stops. The boys at Love’s would be out there clearing the way and helping out.
Hey thank you to all you trucker’s who brave these conditions to get your shipment through may God keep you all safe and make sure everyone gets home! Quick question what are dolly brakes? Thanks again Jay 🦅Empire State.
A dolly connects two trailers. It has an axle and wheels and a 5th wheel to serve as the axle for the front of the 2nd trailer
@@countryboy100 🤔👆🏽🧐
Jay Wheeler I agree the truck drivers are what keeps this Country turning!!! It takes soldiers and truck drivers to keep us living the way we live we couldn’t make it without either one!! So salute to all the truck drivers out there stay safe and be careful!!!!
The dolly brakes is simply a little lever on either the dash or the steering column (depends on truck) that you pull down to only apply brakes to the trailer brakes. The only times I use them is when I’m locking in my tandems (trailer axles) after sliding them forward or backwards.
I got stuck in the snow once cost me about $500 to get me out .... I sometimes deliver utility poles so I have to be able to get everywhere.......after that I carry snow chains on me everywhere I go I chain double the drives and I put two singles on the trailer if it gets bad enough...
I’m sorry but you would never catch me driving in the snow! The hell with these loads and these truck companies.
Yes. I stay on top of the weather forecast this time of year. I simply won't go into areas expecting snow or ice, not worth the headache.
Kaori I've been there it sucks absolutely nothing you can do except hangout. I got stuck at rip Griffiths in Albuquerque New Mexico for 3days. The interstate at Santa Rosa was shut down. It sucked but was kinda cool too. All of us driver's went into the restaurant and had a big party swaping stories it was like the old days. I've been at that T/A in Erie. lots of lake effect snow. Life of a truck driver I'm glad you put all of your videos showing people what we have to deal with. Well stay safe and get home to your wife and children safely.
Glad I decided to go to Florida! Stay safe
Your a smart person.
Glad I had the Hawaii run with the secret access to the worm hole to get there.
It’s me again I’ve watched this video at least 20 times! I love it!!! I wish there was more like on KZhead!! I subscribed to this channel the first time I saw this video. May God bless you and your family and keep you all safe through these bad times were living in is my prayer! Amen 🙏🙏🙏
Been there and done that. I always kept plenty of food in the truck in case of some thing like this. Looks like you will be sitting for a while. Thank You for the video and my our Lord Jesus Christ keep you safe.
So did you use snow chains or naww?
@@anonymoustrucker1782 no. I had chains on board which ment i was legally allowed to be on the roads. But i also have brand new tires just for the snow. When i got off the interstate i locked in my divider and went 15 miles an hour to the shipper. After i got loaded the roads where a little better, but took my time on the interstate and once i crossed into ny the roads where much better. For some reason ny does a hell of a job plowing thier roads.
@@stephenklemchuk2492 what's the brand and model of the tires?
@@anonymoustrucker1782 well they are recaps, the mechanics invoice calls them bdr-w. Basically they're an open wall tread design that is suited to remove debris ( like snow). My mechanic is also a towing company and they run these tires on their trucks. For a comparison, they look very simulare to the michialine mdx tires. They are by no means the traditional otr tires with the closed wall design that is ment for long haul pavement only design.
@@stephenklemchuk2492 oh you talking about open shoulder tires, I have those as well. I thought you meant there was a specific type of brand of snow tires.
I’m a huge fan of this video. It helps me sleep at night. I thank you very much…love the snow..

Very good video!! I love to watch what goes on at the Truckstop when it snows!!!
This is like the blizzard of 78 when we were stuck at Toledo 5 for a week with hundreds f other trucks. And one lot lizard. LOL..she made lots of money . Good luck. Stay put.
thanks for the video and showing us how many super trucker’s arnt prepared for weather conditions
Only thing scarier than being snowed in, is being on the highways with many distracted & bad drivers in that same snow!! You are definitely in a safe spot. Hopefully they'l get y'all cleared out & moving again, REALLY SOON!! A weekend nor'easter is coming to parts of the east coast, northeast & new england FOR THIS UPCOMING WEEKEND!! Was at this truck stop in Lincoln, IL when it started to snow. Parked for the night around 10 pm (Sat). Load must be in Milwaukee the next AM (Mon). 10 hrs later, there was 8 inches on the ground. Contacted my dispatch & told them I told them I'm not going anywhere since I can't see where the road. Parking lot haven't been plowed. Dispatch said I must go since interstate wasn't closed. Told them I'll leave later that night. Left at 11pm. Made the dropoff time by few hours. Still had to wait for drop off time. Glad I retired.
Thanks to all Trucking out there...
Damn that sucks…. Never been through it like that. I’ve been in snow but not to the point where I was stuck and couldn’t truck….. good video keep it coming
We had white out conditions in ND yesterday and 30-40 MPH winds should always carry at least single chains I prefer triple rails never stop on a hill
in BC Canada Most highways require you to carry chains from October 1st to April 30th.
Our western states have similar chain rules during similar times. In Colorado, anything west of Denver kinda starts that line. And I appreciate the comment!
Some of these items can be built on there extended cabs adding air compressor , storage bins to hold emergency items. Also foldable snow blades that can be added.
I have had them argue with me when I tell them that. They like to tell me it's not safe or it will break something lol
Once your brakes cool down you can set them without having to worry about them freezing up. If they have any moisture in the drums and you set them right off you will be under your trailer with a hammer beating them loose.
I’m a new driver and never lock trailer brakes at all cuz I haul for family dollar and they are old as hell
I used to o ark about an hour befor setting the trailer breaks so they GG Ave time to cool off and will not freeze up
Stay safe, play it safe, been there done that, 22yrs OTR refrigerated.
My brother jackknifed yesterday morning on i-70 in Hagerstown, be safe.
Oh no! I hope he was alright!
@@survivetothrive21 He was really shaking up but walked away with no injuries.

@@anonymoustrucker1782 Yes, empty trailer in 50 to 60 wind gusts mixed with rain and snow is a set-up for disaster
@@GrabinGears yes he should've stayed put
HI, khori, I hope that you get sorted out soon. It would be nice if you were able to get home. Your broker needs to pull his finger out of his butt and sort you out. You are better off not moving your truck. Take care my friend and keep us posted, I can't wait to see the next video. I hope that you have plenty of diesel in your tanks. Thinking of you and your family from Dublin, Ireland.
I would definitely work my way out of there. Trick is never spin the tires. Move forward then back and keep packing down the snow. Eventually you will pack it down far enough to build up momentum to break through the snow. Always keep a bag of salt in the truck. Throw it around the wheels and wait 30 minutes. Drive out no problem.
I hope that trave center had a tractor or wrecker to pull you guys out after they plowed. Makes me wonder why they hadn't plowed while you were filming. Good luck.
I love this video!! I wish it was at least 3 to 5 hours long!! Thanks for this much though!! I’m a new subscriber gonna go c what else you guys have…thanks again!!!
I appreciate the comment, Doug! You’re welcome!
at our Alpo Nestle plant shipping was our main priority pulled many of truck out with the front end loader
Yes is time of the year real with the snow up in that area , y'all be careful out there .
Good Stuff, Great Tips😃👍🏿
Overpriced TA can’t plow pretty pathetic or by design to keep you there and get your money
If those TT's had chains, I betcha many of the parked TT's could get out. But chains are mostly required for the mountain passes out west like Donner Pass on I-80 in CA and I-70 in CO.
Trucks snow day weather cold 🥶
Leonards Xpress is literally up the road from me on back country roads we get deep snow on the normal them boys definitely know how to get around in it as you all witnessed
be glad youre getting that. the old days you didnt get crap.
Hahaha wrecker went right through! I worked Monday moved 14 different trailers around... you just have to know how. BTW fresh snow is better than snow where others have gone through and packed it down. Also the 150 you mention is more about 550!
I believe it in those conditions as far as the hook fee. I was just speaking from experience from when my previous truck had to be towed. It ain’t cheap, that’s for sure lol. I talked to a few who had to be towed that day and honestly that wrecker company was taking it easy on everyone. 250 cash or 300 credit.
Good luck . Dennis.
On snow or ice, pour a jug of windshield washer over your drives and wait a minute. Then try. It'll get you going for long enough to build some momentum. It gets me out a a couple jams every year up north.
I had my own trk for years its ridiculous that the truck stop doesn't have its own machines to clear the snow lve been to that TA in Erie
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THAT SNOW LOOKS CRAZY
This is why i carry a shovel and salt on my truck. Just incase i get stuck i can alteast shovel under my drive tires to get back into a spot
That reminds me of being stuck in a snow storm at Eddies Corner in Montana between Christmas and New years several years ago.
If I have to be stranded Eddie’s corner is just as good a place as any. I stop there quite often.
Ha! We put in a bid for plowing at that place and they said we were too high....get what ya pay for lol
Stay safe all of you

When the storm comes off lake Erie, it's no joke seriously, I was stuck in the middle lane on I-90 at exit 56 in Buffalo, New York for a day and a half, with 4" of snow
I drove this route every night as a line haul drive for 7 years at night from Rochester NY to Geneva oh it gets rough in the winter time that is for sure and that 46 miles from the NY cash box to the Ohio line it gets pretty bad in Erie PA

In NYC on the news channel weather reports them sometimes as Nor'Easters
As for the broker, "loose there number " I've been an o/o for 19 years, many have came, and many have gone, I would call him when it's delivered and say, you must have needed the money more than me, see yah 😀
Wow! It's Friday now! Hope all of you are out if there now. My dad was a truck for 45 years. In one of the journeys I went with him in was to Canada. But, we were snowed in at a truck stop in Buffalo for 5 or 6 days. We stopped at the truck stop for the night. Had some snow. Woke up in the morning snow was up to bottom of the doors🙄safe travel to ya.
Was it in 2010 that happened
At least you have time and beer. Hope it doesn't freeze.
My company implemented bad weather pay. I was stuck in Sydney Nebraska due to 80 being closed. I shutdown on a Sunday. They closes the interstate at midnight with a snow storm. I didn't continue until Tuesday. My company paid me 9 hours on Monday at $15.00 per hour. Because i was stuck
When this would happen to me I would move truck back and forth every few hours , staying forward sometimes and back other times. This assured me I could get out when the time was right.
That’s actually a really good idea! I appreciate it. I’ll have to remember that for next time
Stay warm be safe

Stay safe and wait it out, I guess until it melts off some , at least your at truck stop because some trucks stuck on hyways and freeways
I never stoped in a snow Strom I was not getting snowed in at the TA I'd lock that power divider in and just be lite on the gas lite on the brake drive through so much lake effect snow right where your sitting if you got weight keep going I've hit drifts on the thread at the end of that runway it was 5 feet out to the meidan I held on and kept it straight and thank God I can out the other side I live in worcester mass if I was heading to the house I didn't stop
I'm 2 hr south of you in Pittsburgh. Was no Bueno for sure
I always would throw a shovel on my headache rack in the winter not bad idea
In Erie, PA now big storm moving in next 36 hrs
Are you stuck in a truck stop, didn’t they have chains for the wheels, you could also drop some air pressure in all the tires and get more tires traction so you can move to a less snowy spot
reminds me of the time i spent in Reno trying to get thru Donner's Pass, took 4 days.
in snow this deep,i wouldnt think about moving, tell youre dispatcher,is he gonna take the blame if you wreck,or jacknife, its better to be snowed-in,in a truck stop, than on the road stuck, look,at that snow storm at Donner Pass, all those people that froze to death in their cars that was stuck on the road, stay in a place where you are safe &have access to food and water&heat, stay safe all you truckers &travelers🥶🥶🥶🥶

Hello from Roumenia ❤
Been stuck in Erie before at the ta years ago
You must be from the south looks like a normal winter storm
Head south for a couple months..
Buy a set of chains or cable's that way you can keep running!
Gee shows how much i know, i just figured the trucks deer/crash bumper can just push the trucks back in the space
This is a great video
Wow lol how do yall get out of parking area?? Trucks cant even move!!
That's the best thing to do is stay put and if your at a truck stop or a rest stop it better then being stuck in a unsafe place
U guys idle those trucks for days ?
I think sometimes trucks have to be upgraded to carry certain items like tire chains, air compressor, winch’s, and anything to deal with the weather.
Loved watching the 300 trucks zipping up & down the hwy. Than the Gilster truck boss hog his way through the lot. I just think you like layin' out
On a beach in the Bahamas , very much. In a truck stop in Erie, PA? Not so much
CHAIN UP !
You didnt see the guy with his battery power snowblower. Dam thing worked good around his truck. Said got it for Christmas. Still he had no way to get out of that lot.
