WORTHY PROJECT, brother! ! ! Women RULE! So much smarter than us
Tip: When you put the manifolds back on leave the nuts and bolt slightly loose where the two manifolds bolt together until after you tighten the manifolds to the head. This will allow both manifolds to float until they are even. then finish tightening the bolts.
Excellent advice, grey beards rule!
Thanks William! I did do that should have explained why and shown it. It’s a great tip thank you!
What he said! Been there done that, got the T-shirt.
@Wayne Coke I was an auto mechanic most of my life and I'm 67 yrs. old. I've changed more than a few of those and if you don't do it that way you better have spare parts.
*@**6:02**, Legend has it Steven Spielberg came up with the idea for **_Jar Jar Binks_** from these GM Elephant head intakes he saw during **_American Graffiti_** .*
Heck I'm just here for a wicked video soundtrack! LOL I love watching the `58 get some love. Thanks for shaing!
Good job keep her happy and above all keep this piece of her past alive.
Love the shirts, from several angles it appears that they go over the door. Cool! Thanks for the lunch break!
When shortening up studs or bolts now I thread on the die or a nut before I cut it off then just undo it and the threads are perfectly aligned with no risk of cross threading.
It was the smooth shank that needed threads, wasnt it?
Those skirts are wild! The best I have seen. I love the detail to match the bumper.
Absolute beauty!! Good stuff... and thanks for bringin' us along!!
Best looking chevy ever made...
Last video Ben posted mentioned you. He cut down Anglia grill shell. Fantastic he’s going to visit you. 😊continue helping show us your way to do things. Hopefully I get to see what you and Ben do. I’m always learning From you👍
was hoping to see you repair the manifold,
Karl that’s a Nice 58 Great job on the skirts Can’t wait till next video
Yeah man, finish off the interior! The car deserves it! Keep up the good work! JIM🤩
Another nice video. I'm starting to think you loooove Kristina. Great content, music and diversion.
Man I thought those fender skirts came with the car wow u made those u do great work.
Just a tip, for working with those straight 6 manifolds. Leave the bolts connecting the intake & exhaust a little loose. Torque both manifolds to the head first . Then torque the intake to the exhaust. This way, you reduce any irregularities between the two pieces. You will get a better seal, and less chance of cracking. Love the channel, keep up the good work.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing!
Exhaust manifolds can warp over time. One thing I sometimes do is put the whole manifold assembly on a belt sander to get it flat again.
Love the cruiser skirts with the spear 🥰😎
Those skirts look awesome! Please make a video of making some like those. I like the detail going towards the bumper.
Always like it when you fire up the CNC laser cutter. I used to work in a big factory where they had a couple of these to cut out parts for construction equipment. Where’s the coolant for your machine? I just added a couple pieces of equipment to my little garage shop where I do body and paint on my own projects. Inherited them from my dad. Added a HD bench grinder and a small drill press, as well as a belt sander and sanding wheel. Those will help when I have to make some patch panels from scratch. I’m working on a 73 Dodge Tradesman. Repainting it this year and going try my hand at custom paint on it. Loved the vans you had and we’re working together on!
Some really simple and small boxes to put those speakers into would yield a great return on sound quality seriously.
I was thinking the same thing some small mdf boxes.
Hay Karl, watched all your videos and i just need to get this off my chest, i wish i was closer to canada to have you make me a pressed plate for my business logo however the work you do is true and needs a lot of respect, i am a boilermaker at trade sheet metal worker certified but i have learned more from your videos, as to my trade test, but we need more of your videos seriously !!!! Its a pleasure to watch keep it up post more !! We also do alot of custom work and honestly i use your techniques daily. Thank you for the great content wish you all the best !!
Sweet ride...those skirts you made are beautiful.
Ever heard a 235 with split exhaust manifold and straight pipes ? OH THEY SOUND SO GOOD !!!
You know what I like about this video....you being real....showing your human just like the rest of us....I like that you didn't cut out the mistakes and the what went wrongs like all the t v shows do.
I've always had a friend fly cut my 235 and 261 intake and exhaust and cut the surface between the two. They still end up having small black carbon tracks and a very slight "putt" at idle. I think they're more or less made to run with those issues. I've been very fortunate that none of my 848 heads have ever had any cracks. In a world where I've tried to get every last ounce out of my 435 '67 Corvette and LB7 Duramax, for driving pleasure, a stock 235 with solid lifters in a '58 Apache is perfection.
Great job hiding the radio Karl without spoiling the dash top job dude 😁😁🤘🤘
Man! You got a spirit of excellence!
Hi Karl, nice that you dare to show it when you make a mistake. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Denmark
I love painting cars. It takes a million details to get it right, but once you get a system the payoff is awesome.
@Mike C'mon man, the fun is in trying to figure out what you did wrong. I painted half a dozen cars before I got one half decent. You can learn but, look at me telling you what you already know.
Again learned something new. Cheers Carl. 🍻
Looking forward for the next video on the Zephir. Thanks for sharing
Hello from Sweden, just wanna say that your show is like the best thing to watch, u are so skilled and i love watching your A-class craftmanship😊
I learned the hard way that gm used metal alignment rings to align the intake to the head. If you don't have them like I did for a while the intake will keep slipping down and leaking since the bolts don't go through holes they are pinched with the stamped metal things.
We used to take the whole assembly to the machine shop and run the head grinder across the face to make sure it was flat.
Thinking of one word that defines this car. Dignified! Someone mentioned lace in the comments. Yup, quick and easy, Heat nut and cool in water. 3 times. Success rate, almost 100% caliper brackets with stuck guide pins, only way. Nice speaker mounts, and bracket for head unit is clean! Typically the speakers are boxed to help with the thump. Take a speaker in a box and lift it out while its playing. P A welding blanket. Hate it yet? Fiberglass. I just filed mine in the trash. I had fiberglass stuck in my arms. Probably not a big deal but itchy as F. Will see if my second one is the same.
Hey Karl, Spencer here, loved the video as usual, I’m glad that you’re opening up the possibility of getting more support from your viewers, it will be well worth it for everyone, I’m just sorry I don’t have the spare cash to join, I’ll still be liking all of your videos though and I hope it works out well for you and everyone that can join. support quality creators guys! Karl is an absolute champion and always puts out the best quality content and information that I’ve seen on KZhead channels, it’s clear, easy to understand and Karl makes everyone feel like it’s totally doable for anyone who wants to give it a go. Love your work mate, keep it up 😊
thank you for another amazing lesson Carl. regards. Abu south Africa
I think your channel is very educational. Excellent job 👍
Screwed up the roof and still got the girl. Nice!
Hello Karl. I like her car. Just saying hi. I just enjoy watching your fabricating work the most. I do collision repair but love watching the fab work because I dont get to do it very often but it's so fun doing something you dont do every day
Agreed! It’s about variety. Thanks for watching and your support Lewis cheers!
@@MakeItKustom You're welcome. Hope ya have a good weekend
Beautiful car! In Australia, we call that torch a 'gas axe'
@Mike Or a Blue Tip Drill.
Gas axe or blue wrench in my shop
Thank you the content eh! That biscayne is skookem as frig! I love this guys attitude and ingenuity! Well done up north der boys!
over the years the exhaust sound of one engine has stayed with me. That of a Chevy 235 with the exhaust manifold split blowing thru a pair of mini glass packs. Loved it. Carry on guys, love your style and your content. A beautiful 58, my fav chevy.
There is nothing better than that. I love that combo too! We will do the split soon
Morning Karl!! Happy Thursday!! I've got to get me a C & C plasma cutting table!!! That piece of equipment makes a night & day difference in your business, be it time & quality of your made parts!! Great job on your 58!! Be safe!! God Bless!!!
Absolutely brilliant Carl great vid as normal
Very nice work on the radio. Someday (If my dreams come true) I will build my truck with 90 degree pipe housed gauges on top the dash.
Man I am amazed at your skills those fender skirts on your wife's car are over the top even though I can't remember seeing a 58 with skirts I would have never thought you built them it looks factory you could have been on the Chevy design team..lol good job also like the metal flake dask steering wheel and roof you lady has one he'll of a low rider thanks for the video your friend from Louisiana Rick 427.
A trick I’ve found that works really well is after you heat the nuts or bolts, instead of spraying a lubricant on it use a candle, just touch it to the hot metal and the wax melts and gets sucked into the threads, makes for an easy removable.
Bees wax,is best.
I’ll try that, thanks
Nice improvement on a beautiful car!
Those skirts are awesome brother u killed it with those
Very unique one year only car. Color is great skirts are too.
I can't imagine finding a beautiful girl who drove a car like that. But now I get it. Kristina was smart, she knew she needed to catch someone who could keep her car repaired. Karl was brilliant, he let her catch him. Bingo!!
YOU have to do lots for Kristina because of how well she looks after you with camera and editing. Thanks for keeping me educated.
Keep the vids coming and cruzing time is here in the north west.
And this is Why I keep watching, Nearly every video always something I can put into my bag of tricks to clean up and restore old parts
Super nice car 57 has always been my first love and my first car back in 76, But the 58 was my 2nd choice and to have a nice one like that today is a dream Keep it up Please install some rust inhibitor in the truck and under to keep it looking super love the car.
I've tried all sorts of little things that I've learnt from you, and have been supperised how well and how easy it is.👍
Wicked man love hearing that!
Pretty cool Karl! I have a 58 Bisky parts car in my yard here in the Kootanays ;)
Hey Karl, cap the back side of the front speakers with Tupperware bowls, PVC pipe caps, 2L pop bottle bottoms...anything to enclose backside. Seal airtight with caulk, hot melt, etc. Will even-out freq response, increase power handling & kill phase cancellation. Worth the 30 mins of work. It'll rock.🤘😎🤘
YES!!! They need an enclosure since they aren't mounted to a panel that will separate the front from the back. Stainless mixing bowls work too but are heavier. Won't take much but will make a huge difference in how they sound, even with them aiming down like this.
Great idea to improve sound. Ok I’ll dig around lol 😂
@@MakeItKustom What ever you make the baffle from, make sure it doesn't resonate or rattle. If it is an enclosure, that can effect response in a negative way by pressurizing the diaphragm so it doesn't have free movement. A plate made of MDF hard board, plexiglass, or some similar dense material surrounding the speaker frame can improve things without pressurizing anything and is pretty simple to fabricate. A little fiberglass house insulation, rock wool, carpet padding, etc on the back side will help absorb frequencies from the rear and is a pretty cheap upgrade to the sound. Doesn't need to be fancy to be effective. Use your ears to judge the sound not your eyes. I have been a working musician for 40 years, studied acoustics and audio production in college and worked as a sound engineer in a concert hall for a number of years. You'd be amazed at how many people don't understand how things work and are shooting themselves in the foot with their notions on what works because of what they believe without understanding the physics behind things. Enclosures are VERY complicated things to get correct.
@@carlholm2765 "Use your ears...not your eyes"...Good tip! I've been looking for a dang sound my entire life and haven't seen one yet. I knew I was doing something wrong. 😆😝🤣
@@ChadReynoldsGarage You are correct, Sir! And good point about the aim. 👍✌
sweet car! Kristina has good taste and I like those fender shirts 😊
My favorite car is a 58. I have a 2 door in the shed and a 454 in the garage that I hope to put together real soon.
Wow! Gorgeous! The car is nice too
absolutely great video and learned a lot on the manifold thank you.I have the same engine in my 1955 chevy truck, it came out of a 1960 car excellent engine. I hope to be done restoring it by this fall. God bless
Love those `58's. My Grandma had one; it was about that same blue color.
I like the location for the air ride. Second a fiberglass subwoofer box in the left quarter would look oh so nice.
Just found ur channel yesterday. Definitely, going to check out some past vids this weekend. 👍😎🤘
The way those studs and nuts came out of that was like magic.
That's a NICE car" especially with the 235 cid, and a PowerGlide !!
I didn't read all 400+ comments, it's probably been mentioned, but if you can create an air separation between the front and back of those speakers they will sound 100% better and are less likely get blown out as well. With them hanging out in free space the cones aren't able to work as effectively. I love the videos!
Thanks man that’s next for sure
The trick is good I use it all the time. Well done Karl and Crew.
Love the old school organ pipe speaker grilles on the back 6x9's! Beautiful car!
Beautiful Ride Christina👍
Happy wife, happy life. Your a good man.
Going back and rewatching old vids, I am amazed at all the short tangents that provide good detail tips. You always help others think outside the box. Haven’t seen any big meetup work sessions lately? not that we don’t like cameos from Elio 😂
Put old Cadillac tail lights on a 58.. a guy in school had them,, looks awesome.
This is where rosebud would come in handy lot safer control the heat a little bit better
I have an old Land Cruiser that has a 2F motor in it. Toyota modeled their motor off of the 235. With that said, I've had great success using Remflex gaskets to make up the difference between the air and exhaust manifold.
Very cool. I have a 58 Biscayne myself. 2 door post. 283 with a 4 speed
All the stuff he's got, I'm surprised a sandblasting cabinet isn't among them
I had a 73 Chevy inline 6. Cyl 292 cid. That had the same problem, so I sent both manifolds to the machine shop, had everything machined flat, then bolted both on the head, NOW I have almost .0.223 clearance between intake and exhaust heat box, so I took 3/16" x 1" flat strap, made a spacer plate, then with the gaskets everything came out right on and no stress on the cast manifolds, Great Video. Thanks
I'd love to customize Christine! 😃
There's a couple of tools that I use which are faster than a torch and the other is fast at finding leaks of all sorts. The first ins and inductive coil heater that I use for heating up 'difficult' fasteners. Typically undercarriage nuts 'n' bolts. Takes just a couple of minutes with virtually no set up time. Very fast, very cheap. The second is a smoke machine to find leaks, also fast and cheap. I recently used smoke machine to find intake leaks on my son's '06 Taurus. It literally took only five minutes to set up and do a test with pin point accuracy. I take it that you have no media blast cabinet either. A super useful tool and time saver. With one of those you can also do a thorough clean out of the internals of the manifolds. I personally like to deburr any cast on an engine as well, (inside and outside). It can make it easier to work on at a later date. If you've ever tried squeezing your hand trough a gap on the engine with casting flashing still there, you'll know what I mean...I think that if you don't take care of that rusted back exhaust flange on the head, you're going to get an exhaust leak. Better to take the head off and use a hot metal powder spray welder to build up the level of the exhaust flanges. Not sure why you wouldn't remove the factory radio delete to use the stock radio location, it's not like the delete plate something special in any way. You also get the use of the glovebox. Very nice installation though! How about speaker guards, lest someone put their foot onto a speaker?
Hope you film some of the work you and Jordan do it would be great to see you two working on something. I've been watching your channel and Bennetts customs channel. He's on the west coast and I'm on the east coast of australian
Whenever I'm disassembling old, rusty parts like your manifolds, I heat them up with a torch as you have, then while they're still hot I touch a big old candle to them. You 'd be amazed how the wax will melt and wick into gaps and threads, makes removing the fasteners that much easier. This works well for removing O2 sensors too, don't need the torch, just run the engine briefly to warm the exhaust system.
that works for sure...lug nuts especially... and all I ever use is map gas or a propane torch
Awesome..my wifedrives a '58 delray more door its flat black was 3 on the tree now its 3 on the floor with a hurst pistol grip shifter out of my roadrunner..I took the 235 out cause the cam lobe wore out for fuel pump and put a 350 ,with original 3 speed trans..boughtrhecar withal new interior for 900 bucks 17 years ago ..haven't recovered the seats they just have blankets but cool car and she loves it..
As someone that owned an old Impala you need to look at the video at 26:57 where the trunk is vertical there is a large rust spot on the vertical area near the wheel well. There is also one on the other side. I would urge you to repair it ASAP as once it gets larger it becomes a serious PITA.
Turn the crescent wrench over so the solid part is putting pressure against nuts and heads. Never use the moving part for pressure or torque. Same for any tool with a loose adjusting part, vise grips, channel locks, etc..
its been awhile, since I've seen Rat Fink..so freaken cool..🤪.. ...Black Art Forge .
Great video on the 58 would love to have this car in my interior shop for a few weeks
tip on rusty nuts and bolts, heat with torch, when red cools down apply bees wax i get it hobby lobby,i think it a 1/2 lb. block, last for years
Wo, that's such a beautiful car. I'm sure Christina feels amazing driving it. Thank you for all you do for us folk out here who enjoy and learn from you both. Have a great day folks. As for value its the best ever.
Your welcome man thanks for watching!!!
Happy Wife, Happy Life! Well done...
The problem that I see with your manifold project is that you are supposed to loosen the intake and exhaust manifolds from each other when you replace the gasket. Then you don't tighten them up until after you get a good snug onto the head. With everything snug then you tighten them to the head and then the manifolds together. I was taught that by a guy when I was a kid, about 60 years ago.
many times over the years have I heard the 235 as "running like a sewing machine"!
👍🏻It would be pretty cool to clean up that engine bay and install the three carb intake on that baby. Hopefully I’ll find a woman one day that enjoys cars as much as Christine.
Love the skirts. Inspires me to do something like that on my 66 Wildcat. Enjoy your content.
Loved the 66 wildcat such a bueatiful sporty/ filled with style auto.
I put a pertronics ignition on my Holden 308 van, the first ting you will notice is that it runs so efficient that you have to drop the idle. It did fail some 10 or more years later, but it didnt just stop, I had time to buy a new one, whilst still driving it. Now for the stupid part , I went on an interstate trip, with the new one in the glove box instead of installed. and guess where it failed completely. On the top of a mountain range, in the middle of a forest, at midnight, mid winter , in the rain. Fortunately it was easy enough to install by torch light.
Making me really miss my ol' 63 leaning tower of power. Edit: I've install the Pertronix points replacer conversion modules in all my old rides. I swear by them.
Awesome content. Your stuff is golden
