Form 4 is pretty much jumping around with flips and spins. Form 5 is pretty much like a juggernaut. Form 6 is pretty much the jack of all trades but Master of none. And form 7 is pretty much fighting with your emotions which is considered the Sith style. I swear, Star Wars truly have such amazing lore. @jairose1052@jairose10528 ай бұрын
  • Darth Maul did not use form 6, he used the Juyo variation of form 7. Form 7 was looked down upon by the Jedi as it required to user to delight in the battle and draw upon their emotions, which was thought by the counsel to bring memebrs to close to the darkside. Only Mace Windu and his Vaapad variant we approved, and even then no one was really taught it as the few who did learn it fell to the darkside beside Windu. Vaapad had another special attribute that Juyo lacked. It not only took the users emotions to augment their feats, but it also took in the dark side fro their opponents and then redirected it back at them. This is why Windu easily bested Palpatine, as the stronger a users connection to the darkside is, the more it amps vaapad practitioners. Anakin actually asked Windu about learning Vaapad, but due to Mace sensing the termoil in him turned him down, thats why Anakin learned Form 5 instead, as its forcus on power and physicality was the second closes form battle maniacs 😆. Form 6 was known as the diplomat's form. As it was a balance between the other earlier form, making it a hybrid jack-of-all forms. Exar kun was a practitioner of this form.

  • So, I know you focused on canon continuity, but the interesting thing about Niman is that it can also be - at least in Legends - broken down in two categories. The first one is the diplomats version, the most widespread in the Jedi Order because given that it required less time to learn and master than other forms, and still gave a pretty wide range of skills, it was favoured by Jedi focusing more on mediation and diplomacy than actual fighting, but would still have the knowledge to defend themselves and others if and when the need arose; and the second one is the duelist version. That one basically strove to overcome every weakness each of the 5 previous forms had, and what's really neat about that version of Niman is that, many of the best duelists in the Legends continuity are actually masters of it. People like Exar Kun, Revan, or Darth Krayt, for example. Great breakdown by the way

  • Count Dooku is noted as the foremost practitioner of Form II, but he also used Form III and V when it suited him, as he did in AOTC. Indeed, with Count Dooku's noted capabilities as a multi-tasker, so easily employing devastating Force attacks mid-duel, Form III would be positively lethal when practiced by him, just waiting for an enemy to leave the slightest opening in their guard.

Because I mainly fight with the Italian dueling saber, an elegant weapon for a more civilized age, I favor the elegance of Form 2 and because I am shorter than many of the people I spar with and therefore have less reach than them I have discovered that the most reliable way for me to win a duel is to close in as quickly as possible with a flurry of strikes and feints.

    @HenryOfSkalitz7786@HenryOfSkalitz7786 Жыл бұрын
    • You will have even longer reach if you use a gun. 😀 I think that what we mostly see in StarWars - lightsabers with long handle and using it with both hands pretty much doesn't make sense, it's light and we can say that blade has zero weight, even when we can't know that sure, it's definitely lighter than metal swords and better balanced, so using some rapier-like style one handed with longer blade makes the most sense to me, which is what Dooku was doing. But yes, long handle and using it like katana looks cool, but I wish there were more rapier/saber-like fencers in StarWars, like Dooku. Also, if lightsaber can go thru pretty much anything without any force, why cutting with that like with katana with both hands? One handed rapier style gives you better reach while you still can chop off hands and legs because it's fu*king lighsaber. 😀

That "Ju" part means Gentle or "Yielding" (as in yield to the push or pull of your opponent, doing the opposite action of them so as to off-balance them with their own energy, thereby conserving your own energy). Thus, if someone pushes you, pull them. If someone pulls you, push them. Either way, they are bound to be off-balanced, and, as long as you maintain your balance, you maintain the strength advantage and the correct leverage to throw your opponent (even if, on the surface, your opponent has more physical strength than you).

It is always good to have both and to never neglect one over the other. It also looks like it gives you options in case one thing fails you, you have another technique or trait to resort to. For example if you are up against someone stronger, be faster or if you're up against someone who is better at offense, switch to defense and vice versa, and Form V allows the practitioner to do so.

    @Arkhuman11@Arkhuman11 Жыл бұрын
    • You'd be right in assuming that Form V allows users to really leverage their athletic abilities and gives users both good offensive and defensive traits. However, the form isn't without its shortcomings. Form V uses linear footwork, meaning they tend to travel in straight lines. In the case of Djem So especially, you want to be travelling straight towards and through your opponent. With it being so strength based, it is physically demanding without being particularly mobile as noted above. While it tends to plow straight through practitioners of Makashi (as we saw when Anakin defeated Count Dooku at the start of RotS) which also uses linear footwork, Soresu is capable of stonewalling Djem So until they tire or get frustrated (as we saw when Obi Wan defeated Anakin at the end of RotS) and Ataru is capable of simply evading it and catching it from an unexpected angle. This is all dependent upon the skill levels of the practitioners in the duel of course. Form V was developed by Jedi who thought Soresu was too passive, it is derived directly from Soresu. This means there is plenty of overlap and it is often easy for Form V practitioners to learn Soresu alongside. This provides a nice fallback in case you feel a combat situation isn't going as planned. Ataru especially is one of the most physically demanding forms to use and is strong against Form V, Soresu provides a way of defending against it while conserving energy compared to both Form V and Ataru. Makashi is also surprisingly similar to Djem So in terms of footwork, meaning it should be easier than most to learn to incorporate techniques from it and add them to your toolbox. Sometimes it is easier to unbalance an opponent by parrying and sidestepping, allowing then to overextend than try to block so hard you knock an opponent backwards.

    • It's not balanced at all offensively, you severely limit your range of motion and moveset with it which is why it is never used by basically anyone else and Anakin tries to break her of it. You also need a strong grip for it to serve any purpose defensively since you will only be able to use one hand with it. As for Qui-Gon, his problem is that he let his conditioning slip because he had no need to keep it in top shape, Maul was able to prey on that. Had Qui-Gon survived and fought in the Clone Wars he would have been fine.

I just dont see learning and leaning on just one form as the better Form, having a mixed form makes you unpredictable, and knowing Of the other forms allows you to understand a possible attack or approach or dig into the mind of the Opponent you face, are they Aggressive, will they push to attack or defend, what sort of area would better fit their style so you dont fight in that area. Just cause you read about other forms or try some of the moves of it may provide benefits. If i was a jedi I'd want to spar with Mace Windu, Dooku, Yoda, Anakin, Kenobi, I wouldnt duel them per say but just Spar and find my weaknesses and find ways to learn from their actions. I would also want a two handed lightsaber, that could be a Dual bladed Lightsaber. One that i could switch from regular to reverse grip by hitting a button and changing just the blade, or hit the switch and go to a dual blade if i so needed.

Obi wan was originally form 4 but when qui gon died he decided to use soresu as it allowed him to correct his masters mistakes. He mastered soresu in revenge of the sith. Dispite his low midiklorian count he was one of the first to master soresu in such a short amount of time. Soresu not only allows the user to be used against blaster and lightsaber but also allows the user to have a distinct advantage against both. It was said that they would rarely lose a battle, and when mastered they could defend themselves against “an army of battle droids, clones, or blaster wielding foes” for hours without taking a hit. Baring in mind that with enough practise the user can deflect blaster bolts back at the enemy, the user has a very big advantage of surviving.

A.k.a form 5 is more systematic and structured than form 6 and has a philosophical basis, whereas form 6 is more like response and counter. Also i noticed that niman seems to be often used with two blades, but i guess not strictly. Either way in summary, form 6 is kinda like you take bits of each form and stick them together. But in a geometric sense you have forms 2, 3 and 4 representing the extremeties of the triangle philosophy of offense, defense and agility, with form 5 being the circumcentre, form 6 is above form 5, and forms the tip of the triangular pyramid. Form 1 is the space encompassed by the plane between forms 2-4 as its basically just the raw ability to swing and maneuver a light saber and like form 5, can be customised to the users fit, but unlike form 5 which is a fixed point and relatively rigid and comes as a complete set of techniques, form 1 is like the manual version of that, where you can alter your agility, offense and defence combination, but naturally at the cost of proficiency and specialisation. Form 1 is the complete set of all lightsaber techniques. This then splits into 2 sets, the unaccepted techniques became form 7, and the accepted techniques formed a 3 way venn diagram where form 2 is the offensive subset, form 3 the defensive subset, form 4 the agility/mobility subset, form 5 is the intersection of these three sets, form 6 is the union of these three subsets.

  • Aside from the fact that Maul was a form VII user, specifically Juyo, not form VI, one thing you overlook was the dual wielding lightsaber combat style. It's not the Shien variant of form V. Shien was specifically geared towards deflecting blasters back to firing enemies and was not favored by Ahsoka; she initially used Djem So as Anakin but later switch to the Dual Wielding style know as Jar'Kai. One other famous practicioner of Jar'Kai was Exar Khun, which later switched to Form VI, Niman, after constructing the first dual bladed lightsaber in history. This will probably get buried but saying that Maul was a form VI User and that Shien was geared towards a dual wielding fighting approach are kinda big mistakes, sorry but there's no point in sugar coating it, and you probably won't care anyway.

  • VERY good summary! You did an outstanding job on most forms and gave great examples. However I have to disagree with you in terms of Niman and Maul. Maul was (in the books) a true blademaster that mastered and combined all 7 forms but his go to form was Juyo. Form 6 (Niman) is the 'diplomat's form' - yes, it is canonically considered as combination of all previous forms but if you take a closer look at the Jedi showdown on Geonosis you get a clue why it is called 'diplomat's form' - it was an easy but effective style for non-warriors. It's funny how every form is described as 'best': II should be best for classic duels, but III is unbeatble if mastered. IV is also said to be unbeatble when wielded by a master in a straight forward one on one ... and so on. I like how Karpyshyn described the styles in his Bane trilogy - true masters use moves from every form, blend them together or incorporate sudden and stark switches ... there is no best and only form - it all depends on the situation, the opponent and the adaptiveness ;-) Fun fact: Obi-Wan was going ALL for Ataru (because he thought it was the best at the time being and admired Qui-Gon), but the death of his master showed him the disadvantages in terms of defense - so he switched to the most guarded and 'passive' form ... style III (that he became famous for).

  • It makes a lot of sense that Ahsoka would use Shien tbh. Bc I always saw her as a healthy mix between Obi Wan and Anakin. So it makes sense she would learn Djem So from Anakin and then include the Soresu aspects gradually. I also love to see how her dueling style changes. She started with one saber, and later added the shoto for her offhand. Its just so cool to see bc we dont really see that much shift from anyone else! Anakin and Obi Wan fight in their well established styles by the time we see them fight often. But Ahsoka gets to develop and change her style as she discovers what works for her.

  • Juyo is my pick with dual sabers. Speed and ferocity of engagement.

  • Form 5 Djem So is my favorite as I love the potent counterstrikes but form 4 is still a close 2nd.

  • i think vaapod is extremely dangerous to siths. in the book revenge of the sith, it states how windu didnt just draw on his on darkness but also sidious's darkness when they fought. the stronger sidious was, the stronger windu got, it emwas heavily implied that sidious knew he couldnt beat windu hence why he resorted to trickery. windu would have crushed sidious if not for anakin. wish we got more of his style 😊

  • I think I would choose Gem-So. I enjoy both the ideas of Ataru and Soresu, and Gem-So sort of combines the 2.

  • Form 7 requires a very strenuous and continuous use of the Force, and a strong mastery over one's emotions in relation to Force energy - General Grievous doesn't wield the force, therefore he was not taught all forms of lightsaber combat lol

  • I'm more of a Soresu guy. I'm all about bolstering defensives and waiting for an opportunity to strike. Hunker down, take some punishment and then when there's an opening, you strike hard.

  • My favorite is form 7 vapod. I do enjoy lightsaber duels but knowing my style I usually stick to a mixture of 3 and 4.

  • I'd choose form 6. Sounds like the swiss army knife of lightsaber forms. A pretty safe option since you have a bit of everything.
