The Cinematography of Roger Deakins

A compilation of my favourite shots from the films that Roger Deakins has worked on throughtout his career. Easily one of my favourite cinematographers.
This is a personal video rather than an analytical look at his work, hence I only included the shots I love.
Expect some more videos like these for a few other cinematographers I love :)

  • Deakins doesn't just enhance your appreciation of cinematography, he enhances your appreciation of life.

  • To whoever reading this, if u really understand the beauty of these shots and such movies, u r already at peace in your little world of cinema. You have a different vision than anyone you know. You know what joy is. You don't need nobody to tell you what to watch.

    • Love this my friend! People get caught up with ratings and if a film is under or overrated when in reality, none of that matters. Just enjoying the art and having fun discovering new films.

    • people will say you are pretentious but honestly there are lots of anti intellectualism in this world right now I really do think having an objective understanding of what art is is very necessary. High key "pretentious" is a term lots of, less than stellar, understanders of art use

  • I absolutely LOVE Deakins' work. Every shot is a piece of art in itself, yet never so overstated that it gets in the way of the story. Wonderful!

  • Damn. You're too good. What a video! The flow of the shots is so smooth and meaningful and the music you've used really complements the sequence. Brings out the best works of RD!

  • to be honest, I'm a big big fan of Blade Runner 2049, 1917, No Country For Old Men, Sicario, Skyfall, all this film I truly adore because it's so beauty. all this films are already in my computer. I've watched it over and over. And today I randomly just realize the cinematography on those films was created by legendary mr Deakins, wonderful !

  • I get why everyone loves him. this vid got me to realize, his imagery is a flat, opaque point of focus, juxtaposed with a complex back- or fore ground. Its just not my thing. but i respect it

    • I like how it’s a visual experience as well, you’re not only experiencing the movie, but the imagery. It’s like watching an art painting frame by frame with Deakins

    • Yes , i know what you talking about.., his flate imagery works perfectly in the case when its a clean and rich architecture like the inside of wallac corporation , the offices in prisoners and sicario or bond but he is not a guy for producing a gritty look .the outside shots of blade runner look somehow flate and clean despite they look beautiful but not immersive and lived in. Recently in an interview of matt reevs about the batman, he talked about how they used old anamorphic lenses to create imperfections in the imagery so it looks gritty and lived in.and in my opinion they succeeded. Greg fraser did with batman what was missing in blade runner 2049.. but i still think that the things dekeins is good in are unmatched by anyone , i dont know how his cinematography looks so simple but impossible to recreate..

    • I'm not anyone special. I didn't have some magical skills to be able to show it, I just practiced the craft of video editing for some time. I'm sure you can easily get the skills to share with the world how you see things :) and you're already a step ahead since you have that vision to begin with. I hope to see you create to show your love for other artworks :)) wish you all the best man
