When you say referee, the first association for most people will be a bald-headed tall man with a strong look in his eyes from Italy.
And his name is Pierluigi Collina.
But, how did he reach such a legendary status that no referee until or since him even touched?
Well, it’s a long story.

  • during the 90s, Collina was called to referee a very difficult match in Serie B (Italy's 2nd Division), between Foggia and Bari, which fans are enemies. At the beginning of the second half, after the two teams exchanged their sides as it is normally done in football, however, the Foggia's fans (whose stand was therefore just behind Bari's goalkeeper) started to launch objects directed to the goalkeeper of Bari, making impossible for the match to continue. Thus, Collina decided to invert again the team's sides on the pitch, returning to the ones of the first half, making the match continue. Collina was so charismatic that he himself could decide the rules

    • @@t8spy526 many of them would (I could bet money on Bjorn Kuipers), but probably the rules have become more strict nowadays, and referees don't get a lot of lenience in their officiating anymore. Although, had Collina still refereed today I think he would get lenience of his own and neither UEFA, FIFA, or the Italian Football Federation could do anything about it. And I'd love it :)

I also heard a story (though I don't believe it's true) that Collina actually booked one of his assistant refs in a game for failing to correctly call an offside because it was clear to everyone else except the assistant in question. I haven't been able to verify that story, but if it did happen, I wouldn't be surprised because that's just Collina - the rules actually follow him, not the other way around.

Because most of our clubs and our national team suffered so much in European Tournaments in the hands of refs so Turkish people started thinking that Europeans hating Turks so their refs are biased against Turkish teams. But here comes Collina. With Collina we know that we will be on equal grounds with our opponents. This gave Turkish teams additional motivation. When it is announced Collina will be ref in our matches Turkish people went crazy with joy. He is embodiment of justice for us.

    • Man on phone I think i did not express myself clearly. Sorry for my English. The issue in almost every competition for Turkish teams regardless of the opponent refs was favoring the opponents of Turkish teams. Turkish people thinks that all Refs having European nationals was biased to Turkish teams. But this idea changed with Collina. Collina being Italian citizen was not favoring opponents of Turkish teams nor the Turkish teams. So Turkish fans started thinking that only ref that fair and just in all of europe was Collina. Collina is the mind-changer for Turkish people. Turks started to understand that it is not because of nationality it is due to incompetency of refs. Referees often affected from fans or names of big clubs from Spanish, English, German sides. Collina was so good that nothing can affect him. So small clubs from Turkey etc. can stand against big clubs. For example Markus Merk is also one of the famous and respectful ref but there was a match of Galatasaray against Barcelona in Nou Camp in 2001. Gala was 2-0 ahead but suddenly Markus Merk came to scene and Match concluded with 2-2. Watch that match it is available in youtube. What you will think if you are a Turkish fan. One of the biggest name as ref is doing so much mistakes in one much you will start thinking he wanted to Barca to win. But we never had this experience with Collina. And by the time passed we started to understand that it is not because we are Turkish they are italian etc. Big clubs and their fans can affect Incompetent refs. even Refs having big names and fame such as Anders Frisk, Markus Merk etc. often protects teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Man Utd., Bayern Munich etc.

It will assist referees and take away blaming refs, who do make mistakes and are often " duped" by players who deserve Oscars for than football trophies!. Mike Dean will be the perfect man to liaise and get VAR right like it works in cricket...the umpires in cricket don't take offence and it helps them improve. One comment said " power hungry little Hitler's"...VAR can...and will end that aspect of refereeing. At least we know Mike is a football fan with his vociferous support of Tranmere Rovers!!.lol.

I'm glad there's VAR now for the penalties, although that's not yet working perfectly either. And by the way, it's the assistant referee who flags the offsides, the referee is unable to know if something is an offside or not themselves. In that case, it must have been difficult for the assistant as well, as there were many players standing between him and the players that mattered.
