DISAPPOINTING KILN UNLOAD! May 3, 2024, Something happened with Draco! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS?

Heyo Friends,
Today's video is a KILN OPENING!...however, it's a disappointing one!
It's a slow cool program with the 5th segment to 2195 degrees with s 5 min hold. Unfortuneately, it looks like the kiln got stuck on 1967 degrees and held there. Now I am thinking it may be the thermal coupler.🥳
Anyway, you can see some of my creations. I wish I could have had some successes for you but I guess that will have to wait until the next one.

  • Bummer Audrey! I agree with Tiffany. Check your thermocouples if your elements have been changed recently. I also had to replace a few wires in my control box once after everything else checked out. Of course, calling tech support from the company that supplied your kiln is a good idea. Not sure if you do this, but I always keep back up elements, thermocouples, and control box wires on hand. It seems kilns always go down at the worst time! And waiting for them to be shipped is killer. I would refire with just a few pieces to see what happens. Just put all your shelves in to provide some mass. Just my thoughts.

  • Ohhhhhh Noooooo!! 😮😵‍💫 I agree with what Lisa and Tiffany said! I think the pieces actually need to get to temp, so I don’t think you lost the load.. but figuring out why the kiln didn’t get to temp. 🤔

  • Check to make sure all your elements are working.

  • Check your thermalcupler. Mine went bad before my elements needed replaced. I'm so sorry, I've been there and know how disappointing it is. Don't worry, you haven't lost anything. Run some tests on the kiln, then fix and refire everything.

  • Audrey, thank you for sharing. It is good to share our experiences and know all kiln unloads are not always wonderful. Disappointing yes, but a lot to leaning to take forward. Without mishaps, we learn nothing. Chin up and hugs. 🇨🇦💞💞

  • I’m so sorry Audrey that some things didn’t turned out how you wanted. I also believe that you might need to replace your thermocouple. I’m about to replace mine. I’ve been there. 😢

  • Hope you can solve the Kiln temperature problem but there a few amazing pieces there! Love the whales🐋, the porcelain lamps look awesome! Even the mushroom house looks great to me, ( of course I know you have your vision and that it could look twice as good) Give yourself a break! I enjoy sharing in your creative journey .. the success and the not so desired outcomes that you learn from. Our friend Bob Ross would remind you they are no mistakes….just “ Happy accidents”

  • Audrey, I was gone over the weekend and just got to finish watching this. I’m so sorry 😢 I read some of the other comments and your other followers have some good suggestions. I hope refiring works- you have some lovely pieces.

  • Ow dang! Thankfully underfired and not overfired right? I think you can refire the pieces after you figured out what is going on with your kiln. Maybe the thermo couple or the elements? I hope you find the reason soon!

  • ❤Audrey. Felt for you today. My last firing in the community kiln did exactly the same. Luckily I now have my own kiln and in the middle of re firing the load, unfortunately I’ve never had a kiln before, so in the hands of the kiln God!! By the way the community kiln had 4 elements not working. I would test your kiln before you refire. Perhaps do what Julia suggested. Good luck. 🤞

  • I agree with the comments about checking your thermocouple and elements. Once you do, the pieces should be fine to refire.

  • The summer peach was so much peachier than usual! I like the peach and green one although it's probably not vitrified. But the stroke and coats turned out good so it at least reached low fire temp! Probably you can refire everything once you figured out what went wrong! Aargh kiln problems are the worst!!

  • Oh Audrey I am so sorry that you had such an issue with your kiln😢 I was teary for you you just looked so sad. On the positive side, better that it didn't get to temperature than got to the top and sat at 1967 for such a long time, that could have been a much worse disaster. At least you can refire those pieces you haven't lost any. As for what happened I really don't know but I would maybe turn your kiln on completely empty and sit with it for a few hours and see that all your elements are getting red, aybe you have an element out or part of one out. Other than that I am clueless, but others here will be able to help sure. You have some gorgeous pieces in your load, love the crow mug, all the little birdie vases and wow wow wow the porcelain pieces are absolutely fantastic! Thankyou also for the shout out❤ I actually shed a tear😅

  • You can absolutely fire the kiln empty. Jessica Putnam Phillips shared a video to test your elements. You can create a test firing with no holds just 1 stage of 1000 degrees for 30 minutes or so, turn out the lights and peek in to see if all the elements are glowing. it may be on KZhead. I am a premium member of Clayshare so I watched it - just not sure it's posted for others to see. If it's not the elements it sounds like you need to speak to a pottery supply place who sells your kiln brand and get some advice.

  • Oh how disappointing your kiln is on the fritz. You actually did have a few good pieces and you can refire the others and they will be just fine. Better underfired than if the kiln had hit temperature and sat hot for those days. Thank you for sharing nevertheless. I’m sure that was hard to do. Looking forward to seeing them refired.
