  • I've been in -40° quite a few times in Canada. You don't have to say Fahrenheit or Celsius because the two scales cross each other at -40°. You can use your garage as a deep freeze and make ice in 20 minutes out the back door. Warm it up before you put it into a drink though because there's a kinda mini explosion when they're that cold.

    @warren52nz@warren52nz2 жыл бұрын
    • @ScAnDeLeZ Very nostalgic. I lived in Northern Canada for a few years in my youth along the polar bear migration route. Windchill is a bit misleading though. It's what it would feel like at that temperature with no wind. -40° isn't as cold as it sounds if it's completely calm. Add a bit of wind and it's a TOTALLY different experience. I remember we used to measure "windchill factor" in Canada and at 2400 schools would shut down. The unit was something like calories lost per square inch on bare skin. Something like that. A distant memory.

When our boss came in and said so, we said ,”Does that mean we can go home?” Summer commute was 15 minutes. Winter was half an hour, a an hour with an accident or an hour and a half if rubberneckers caused another. I had an interview scheduled for the day after we had an ice storm. Our tree broke in two and fell neatly behind both vehicles so I couldn’t get out. The person’s response when I told them I couldn’t make it because it was gonna take 3 hours to break it up enough and I couldn’t go around it? • I found it to be the other way around. Growing up in New Jersey and New York, the weather was quite predictable. Winter was cold, Spring was warm, Summer was hot, and Autumn was cool. California was disgustingly hot the majority of the time and then on the occasion would go bipolar and then drop to freezing with no warning.

  • I'm from Rochester NY and I can confirm the unpredictable weather here. Something people may or may not know is NY gets wind storms several times a year. If the weatherman says it'll be "cooler", expect to see fallen trees somewhere and get a tornado warning. If its " a warm 70 degree day", its really more like 80+ degrees and humid af. Often in summer, you have humid sunshine with some bulky clouds and its pouring rain. We've got sweat til ya melt or human icicles, take your pick.

I love having basically the same weather all year round. When I lived in Bangkok; the same was essentially true-hot season was horrible, hot and sticky with lots of smog; rainy season was absolutely torrential; cool season, finally barely.

So add that to my heat tolerance from being born & raised in Texas and low cold tolerance and I'm quite sure it = can't survive any northern than Oklahoma.

  • Dec, Jan, Feb, we don't use the freezers much in Minnesota. Just have the item in a box outside works. Numbers go negative and you still see a packed drive threw at Dairy Queen (this is back in the day before they sold their hot menu). Fun when you are a kid, school gets canceled it is so cold here or to much snow. As an adult with any sort of replacement surgery or arthritis, you really start to think about becoming a snowbird or just moving south permanently.

It was about 60 degrees outside and someone obviously from the same flight and a native simply couldn't stop shivering. "It's so cold!!" Scottsdale's population about doubles when the snowbirds arrive and you can always pick them out in a crowd. They're the ones in shorts and t-shirts while the natives wear long pants and sleeves and maybe a jacket.

And then the reporter said something I never thought I’d ever hear: “they are going to have to heat the ice to make it playable.” WHAT? I’ve heard of it being too cold to play outside, but if you’re bundled up, how does the ice get so cold you can’t play ice hockey on it without a heater?

Right now, we got the temperature that's as cold as a blizzard, but not much snow! Actually, the last time we had a heavy snowstorm in my current hometown was a couple years ago, with snow that goes up to your knees and ice as slippery as cooking grease on a road! Now we only have a half an inch of snow and barely any ice on the streets! EDIT: NOW we have the deep snow again. Just as I remembered it. Ugh…
