Mercedes-Benz S-Class W220 review! The W220 S-Class is the S-Class model that everyone hates. Today I'm reviewing the S600, and I'm going to show you why this car is so controversial -- and so hated. I'm going to take you on a thorough tour of the W220 S-Class, and then I'll get it out on the road and drive it -- and I'll show you what it's like behind the wheel of the 2001 S600.

Nobody I know hates or hated the 2000 Mercedes W220
Facts. Was baller af like any current gen models: When you're current and top no one hating other than lower folk, and f them anyhow cause they're hating for what they don't have
That settles it!
Exactly! Idk why he paints the w220 to be a critically panned car that everyone hated the minute it went on sale. The S-class has always been and always will be the benchmark, and the w220 is no exception. He has such a stupid, myopic, and biased take on the S-class and yet he gushes about all the tech and innovations. He and a few others might not like this generation of S-Class nowadays, but this era of Mercedes was ICONIC, and I *guarantee* you they were singing a different tune back in the day.
It looks better than latest (2021) s class. Doug is too judgemental.

Even Top Gear and Jeremy Clarkson was amazed by this W220, it was by far the most advanced car of the 20th century. It’s only issues were reliability and quality control, due to Mercedes financial issues of the time. I personally love the styling and the interior design, it’s unique.
"It’s only issues were reliability and quality control," Those are two of the most important factors in whether or not a car is any good.
@@almassengale I don’t disagree. But when it did work it was the most luxurious and advanced car of the century, by far.

Literally never heard any hate on this car. My dad has one just like this almost 300k miles
The hate is from the "car community" who see third and fourth owners completely ignore the maintenance and upkeep required on a vehicle like this. I sense there's a bit of disguised racism and classism as well.

Awesome. It's cool how many of the features lasted and set the standard for future cars. Unfortunately I don't think that can be said for the new S-class, which is mostly gimmicks that won't last.
I owned a mortgage company around this time and I had a bank rep that bought an S430 but put an S600 badge on the back and it always made me laugh at how ridiculous he was. Thanks for the memories Doug👍
I just recently bought a 2000 S500 for my wife and we absolutely love it. I think it is far better looking than the previous years. It is very comfortable and is amazingly quick for it's size. It just turned 91000 miles and is in great condition for a 22 year old car.
Hey Doug. I actually like The Styling! While having lunch in Philly Last Summer, a W V12 happened to be driving down south street, and I wasn't the only one whose head was turning to look at it as it drove past. Twenty-plus years after its debut and it's still stands out, as something special, and the obvious reason for that, is that it is something, special. It's a beautiful looking LUXURY automobile. And the optional V12, just adds to it's beauty.
Had a 2001 s500 with the exact color/combo and equipment as this and rims and bumpers. I thought it was a beautiful car and still do. Never gave me issues minus the air ride.

It is not RR or Bentley, but luxury does go forward from car series to the next one so that is normal. You need to compare it to BMW from that time.

The W140 development started 1986. 12 years prior the W220 was published
I totally disagree. I’ve always loved this generation, especially the ones towards the end of the run with the newer tail lights.
This is a gorgeous S-class, specially the rear end.
This is one of my favorite Mercedes-Benz ever, if not one of my favorite sedans ever built. It's a shame that people dislike the car, especially considering that the original Maybach was built on this cars' platform.

not really a timeless dedign....
Not sure what Doug is talking about here. The W220 is absolutely gorgeous compared to the one that came immediately after.
I have the same and it is the most reliable car I've ever driven. Never had an issue besides the air suspension at 170.000 miles. I do all the repairs and regular maintenance myself and it costs an average of 1000 dollars per year, besides gas of course. It has 250.000 miles at the moment and still drives as smoothly as new!
Depending on what engine you have there are at least 12 issues that can completely render you car useless that will happen including the gearbox, the abc controls, the ignition coils, the diff ...
I have the 2006 S500 4matic and the car has been superb (only 200K Kms or 125K miles). I too am a wrencher and the only issue has been the fussy air suspension but, not of the type of hiccups that would leave any one stranded. Generally speaking, a key cycle gets rid of any "visit workshop" error code that the air suspension may produce from time to time (to be on the safe side I put a new compressor in, they are not expensive). This is a go anywhere, anytime car.
What engine did yours have?

Although I cannot say for the V12 (haven’t had the opportunity yet) Having owned the 2001 SLK230 (172k mi) 2001 S430 (200k mi) 2002 S500 (94k mi) 2003 CLK500 (140k mi) 2003 SL500 (165k mi) 2001 C320 (175k mi) 2002 C320 (84k mi) I cannot stress enough to buy these beautiful machines. A Yugo looks better than EQS.😂

Almost every Benz looks way better than EQS lol !!
@@yungboicontigo9278 Why won't you try compare that to a Nissan Juke instead of a Supra?
The styling of this car just seemed to be a natural evolution from the W140's. A bit sleeker, more modern design but still very much a Mercedes. Considering the hideous front end on the restyled W210 E-Class, the W220 is a flippin work of art. I know there are a ton of problems with the air suspension when they get old, but I still lust after a W220 S65 AMG and would gladly buy one if I had the cash available (and in reserve for the repairs).
I recall the E-class that came out at around the same time period (W210-211) also had a more rounded design than its predecessor, before reverting to a more boxy design in 2009
@@lzh4950 The W210 was a very weird styling change from the W124 E Class it replaced and my scorn for it resides squarely on the headlights. The round lights are just plain weird! The W211 did a much better job but, IMO, they didn't get the E-Class right again until the W212.
It still looks like with all the features this car is still years ahead of many modern cars. I don't like how this s class looks from outside but I am sure it felt very comfortable inside back in those years.
Count me in, too, I didn't know anyone really hated this car. It's pretty sharp and follows design philosophy/style of Mercedes at the time period.. when you see one in black floating down the road still it's hard not to turn your head for a look. I've heard a lot more stories of how long these last compared to issues. They seem to still be pretty reliable, just like a lot of other older Mercedes cars. Well, everyone has opinions. I'd certainly drive one.. it'd make my W210 jealous.
rustbuckets (some had door replacements under warranty for rust issues) with biodegrading wiring harness, 12pack coil unit on each side, early years airmatic and a bunch more early 2k mercedes trivia.
Really besides the active body control system it’s decently reliable
A CL from the same generation looks 100x better. Although I don’t hate the S class
@@sylvianblade75 That CL is incredible! The 65 is a dream car!
Never. The w210 is far superior, no Airbags, and to me the fit and finish on the 210 is better…I dunno though, I may be biased due to my daily driver AMG 210. As it is, just hit 100k mileage (super low for year 2000), and all the pixels on the dash work…a rarity in these models.
As Ed Bolian has proven many times, just because a car is "mechanically totaled" doesn't mean that it won't run and drive.
I drive my cars until they are like Flintstones mobiles!!! (
That's because these don't need most of the electrical subsystems to run (interior luxury amenities, etc.). Bolian's S55 had ABC which is the most unreliable part of them. If it's a non-AMG airmatic car the basic pneumatic system is far more reliable, cheaper, and easier to work on. Most reliable S-Class generation mechanically.
Actually is one of my fav old school cars ever. How can someone hate this car?!
i've had one for over a decade and LOVE IT !
I once had a W220 S600 facelift and loved it. My daughters called it the flying carpet. I also like the design better than from the W140 and the W221. However, quality is an issue, not only interior material, but also rust.
Doug: “This S-Class is the worst one they’ve made” Also Doug: “All of these features were extremely uncommon in 2000!”
Then gives it 5 out 10 for features...
@@mp4986 I know made no sense!
This is why I watch this channel : not for advice or opinion or score...etc ! juste curiosity about the cars ! lol
Uncommon doesn't equal good, and features aren't everything. As for 5/10 rating, if you haven't noticed, Doug rates all cars by modern day standards. Sure, if we still were in 2001, it would probably get 9 or even 10 for features, but we're in 2022. My moms car has some of those "amazing and futuristic" features, despite it isn't brand new and is just a small crossover. This does make sense for easy comparison of cars from different eras without some "era-bias".
@@mp4986 that I understand because he always reviews by todays perspective, but it’s just funny
Funny thing is, to me, as a kid at the time this was THE iconic S-Class.
Me to idk what drugs is talking about
I owned a gold version of this car and I loved it. Got rid of it because it got way to costly to fix. My Mercedes repair guy told me to get rid of it ASAP and he was 100% right!!! The drive was incredbile though. That's true about if you wanna know what cars will have in the next 10 years, look at what the S class has. Also, I had the later version. It was super fast too and the take off was incredible.
This was the car I wanted when I was in high school and I love a naturally aspirated v12. My father in law has this exact one with the exact same options. It is still perfect. Going to buy it.
Hmm that’s odd. Personally I think the styling of this S class is timeless. It’s modern enough to not look dated but doesn’t look as vintage as it’s predecessor. I think it’s an incredibly clean and elegant exterior design.
@@yungboicontigo9278 Not according to the guy who designed it, bro. Mr. Sacco stated the W140 turned out "about 4" too tall", and he was very proud when he was able to correct that with the W220.
The headlight are really weird. Considering Mercedes Benz at the time are more well known for the dual round headlights that was started on W210 E-class
Yeah. It looks way better than the newer models yet the previous one looks quite dated now.
Doug: "This is the worst S-Class ever built. In particular when compared to the previous W140 model." Also Doug: Rates it higher than the W140
Pretty sure it was because the W220 he reviewed was in better shape than the W140 he reviewed
He was mostly hating on the Styling and Quality. Other than that everything was still a step forward it seems
@@owennilens8892 I personally dont mind the styling. It's not the worst
@@owennilens8892 I actually prefer the styling of this to the W140 and W221. It's simple enough without looking bloated. And the W140 looks too boxy, IMO.
After 2007 the s class are straight garbage
My dad still drives the v8 version of this and let me tell you one thing, all of those little gadgets are broken. The folding cup holders are stuck open, the retracting ac control knob is stuck closed. the gloves boxes dont close or open well, the ac vents are in pieces, and a cassete has been stuck in the player for 10 years. I think the true reason why this car was hated is because of the over complicated engineering. They wanted to see just how detailed they could make a car, and it didnt work out that well. The overcomplication of this car extends to the engine as well, and although it is really a relic of this era of luxury cars, its good we are past this era.

I’m a BMW fan but even I can say that this particular S class I have always appreciated. If I had spare funds I would buy one as a collectors . People say mercs don’t have a good tail end but this one is class - S Class . And the silhouette on point .
Was Dad's new, now mine, the '06 W220 perhaps addressed many of the problems the earlier models of Doug's "cut-rate nightmare" had. Mines the 5.0 and I thoroughly enjoy AirMatic and drive around on the sport setting all the time. It's like on rails going around a turn. My only complaints are no backup assistance whatsoever. And it goes through tires like crazy!
I agree same year I got lexus , bmw , audi had it not s500 just park sensors smh
I haven't met a single person or seen mass internet comments denouncing the styling of the w220. I found it incredible when it came out. Doug, THIS is wrong!
I thought that was an odd comment too. If anything, the W221 receives more criticism because of the fender bulges.
agreed, literally never heard a bad word about it nor its reliability. Sometimes I do wonder if these comments he makes are conjured more from his own personal experience, rather than an objective general outlook. Also gonna note that this in fact was not the first car with ventilated seats, that goes to the SAAB 9-5, but I guess Doug also forgot to research that before he announced the S class as "Pioneer and to his belief the first in the world". Sometimes it really does feel like he just skimps over stuff these days for the sake of adding more material to his reviews, rather than true quality.
no, it looks like shit now as it did then

I remember when it was released in late 1998, it was a piece of art, a spaceship, and the technology was far ahead the competition. It was one of the first cars with easy entry, soft close doors, screens... Even the interior design was futuristic. Maybe compared to the new cars it is now a "deja vu", but back in 1999 it was a beautiful inside out car, with one of the most powerful drivetrains. You have to compare it to the cadillacs and the lincolns even lexus of the late nineties to figure out that it was marvelous. Looks ok….. not a great S class but a decent car
I’m disappointed in Doug’s negative view of the w220. They were so nice back when they came out and were so much nicer than any of the competition.
I've always been a toyota guy and just last year I accidentally ended up having w220 s320 in my hands. I instantly wanted to sell it, nobody wanted to buy it... so I fixed it and kept it. Now I kinda love it. The quality is way better than any toyota I have ever driven (which doesnt say much, but whatever lol) and I still keep finding new features in it... such as those little hidden compartments which I didnt know about. I've never really considered myself to be a MB person but I guess the S-class kinda hits me different.
I got a 2005 S430 and love it. I did do the arnott coilover conversion kit and let me tell you arnott did a good job making this kit to replace the air ride. Drives like a dream 💭
The facelift of the W220 is one of my dreamcars. It just looks gorgeous.
This S Class was absolutely gorgeous when it came out. The previous S Class was trying to hold onto the past and was playing cautious with styling trying not alienate their older customer base. This S Class was a reach into the future finally allowing them to stay ahead of the competition ie Lexus.
It's still gorgeous. It receives hate because of old myths. Bruno Sacco's last sedan design. It has the Sacco touch but for an era where drag coefficient and reduced frontal area is paramount.
W140 was designed in the extroverted 80s. W220 still looks nice, inoffensive presence 👌
What..u compared a benz to a Lexus..lmao
Still looks better than the present S-Class.
@@yrasphong , well, yes. Lexus redefined the luxury car for this segment of the market. Mechanically, the LS400s were superb pieces of engineering. They were precision pieces and when you took the apart the engine these it showed.
Have on myself, and love it. Sure i have to fix the airsuspension and rust, but the feeling when you start it with the 5,0 v8 and straight pipe and the feeling when you drive it makes it all worth it. And sooo comfortable, have fixed most rust and changed the aircompressor, valveblock, 2 airstruts and all the level sensors. Just have to calibrate it now 😁
And the interior still looks like new and everything works flawlessly except air suspension and AC due to a leaking line
Don’t know what Doug is talking about. I know nobody that HATED this s class. Look wise this s class wasn’t bad.. they looked quite nice, especially with AMG packages on them. The new front and rear lights added later enhanced its looks. Personally I think it looks better than the s class that is out now. This one in the vid was an early one. I have heard bad things about the air suspension but that’s about it.
Ditto.
Doug: This car build cheaply for cost cutting. Me: Build quality way better than any car produce today.
Bit of an exaggeration but i see your point
Is he ok??? I’ve never heard of anyone hating this car. One of our neighbors had a S500 back in 2002 and it was the IT car for a lot of people back then. Not sure I agree with this video, but we all have different opinions 🤷🏽♂️.
I was detailing cars at the local Benz dealership when this was still in production and never heard negative criticisms aside from the air ride system failing. Always loved it personally.
Not sure he's ok. He wears two t-shirts and dresses like a child.
These cars are a nightmare to own today, unlike their predecessors. Just look at the depreciation.
So, you know ONE W220 owner? Not for nothing did it gain its bad reputation
Thing is, saying everyone hates something is not an opinion, it's an objective statement which is either true or false.
LOL. This is my favorite S-Class of all. I consider its exterior styling to be the best too, rather than the worst. Another beautiful Mercedes in terms of exterior styling is the Mercedes W126. Also, the phrase _very nice looks_ can apply to the Rolls-Royce Cornish V, in my opinion, but there's no accounting for taste. What looks nice for one guy might look ugly for another. So, I'm giving this review a like, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder anyway.
Who tf hated this car🤨
Exactly
I actually have always thought that this was the most attractive looking S-Class ever made. The one before it looked very 1980’s with all the boxy edges. The one after had an odd shape to the rear end.
Just needs some nice wheels and it looks good

Agreed. It was my favorite. I get nostalgic seeing one.
I 100% agree with this statement. The previous S Class was trying to hold onto the past and was playing cautious with styling trying not alienate their older customer base. This S Class was a reach into the future finally allowing them to stay ahead of the competition.
Hated? Never knew anyone that hated this beauty. This thing was ahead of its time. And still looks beautiful! As long as you did the yearly maintenance it will take care of you. Plain and simple. Thats in all cars. You just have to take care of them. I still have my 08 mercedes e350 and has over 140k miles on it. And it still drives buttery smooth and still get compliments.
140k is nothing for modern standards 🤣

Very well said!My S320 maintenance costs are typically ~100$ per year.Well built car, with one of the best engines(M112/113) and transmissions MB has ever built. So, I don´t really understand this myth about "budget Mercedes".
I was driven in a W211 E Class taxi with over 400.000km (250.000+ miles) on the clock last year. This thing looked brand new inside. Like really brand new. The wood looked great, the leather without any damage, the steering wheel wasn't worn out. Somebody took really good care of this car.
This is a car that you should only get in black or dark blue with beige interior and 19” wheels (but not the AMGs) for the design to work out. I’ve seen it in silver, I’ve seen it in white, burgundy or even red with various interiors but definitely black or dark blue with light beige interior makes for the best aspect. When you turn on the interior lights during the evening, the light beige seats will just stand out, for people outside the car to see. But I agree it did feel a bit shy compared to BMWs bulky 7th series from 2002 onwards.
yeah need certain colors, and the most important option (depending on year) is xenon lights. I recently bought a 02 S500 Lorinser thats black on black with the xenons and such and love it! Most of these w220s for sale or on road look plain jane white or silver with the plastic cheap looking lights or the ABC cars slammed on ground stereotypically haha.

Wow, I am surprised to find out this particular version was so hated. I mean I always liked how this car looked.

As someone who has a W220, it’s one of the best and smoothest drives you will have. Obviously the car being 22 years old, some things have broken but it’s still an amazing car for what you can pick them up for today.
The only problem is the suspension
@@bbb_258people just don't know how to diagnose them
I’ve always thought this one looked so much better than the previous one.
I own one of this w220 and love everything of it ... body styling is great remarkable driving experience and also good reliability ... some issue with the instrument cluster but thats about it.
I dunno, the air suspension in my w220 was sometimes a pain to deal with. But I loved the car, i think the facelifted version still has some of the most stylish looking taillights that the S class family ever came out it. beautiful machine
Definitely a waste of money. If people didn't have such a sensitive rear maybe they could save a few thousand dollars.
I had a 2004 e320 with the famed air suspension, it eventually broke of course, replaced it with coils and it was so much better.

That's kind of a dumb reason to like an sclass
Strange. As I remember it back in the day. This car was seen as a great improvment regarding looks. The former model was boxy and too heavy looking. This also looked great compared to the new BMW 7-series that came a couple of years later. The one thing I really dont like with the W220 (or any Mercedes of that time) is the way they tend to rust.
I just purchased a one owner 2001 S500 Designo interior Espresso with 35k original miles. Stunning car. Got a few small items to work out but what a beautiful car and a fantastic driver. It will be my daily for years.
It’s so weird I prefer this design rather then the newer ones. It is timeless design. Still holding very well. The colour combo and the power it holds is amazing
Same. I think it looks handsome yet simple and masculine.
Same. I love this design era for Mercedes, they are unmistakable for any other marque and have grown up, beautiful, classy style.
Way sleaker than a w140. They will be appreciated in the future :)
My wife and I are of the same mind as you with regards to the styling. I like the exterior of the W220 much better than the blase W221 but, I give the better interior looks and quality to the W221.
couldn't disagree more with everything you said LOL
This was my first S Class and I still have it, it has 340k miles on it and still drives smooth! Yup the air suspension did give me a problem at around 200k miles but apart from that it's been amazing! I absolutely love this car and the styling
You Benz should star in one of Doug's tests!
What’s your year and engine? That’s awesome
One fun fact is that these never had blank switches…. I own a base model usdm S430…. with the only “extra” being it’s a long wheelbase and the switch panel seems to be custom made to whatever amount of options you chose….
Headlights were a little weird in this generation, but my grandmother drove a white one of these and it’s what started my fascination with Mercedes Benz when I was little lol

This is actually the first time I've ever disagreed with Doug. This is one of the most beautiful S Classes ever made. Doug should set aside his personal bias and should speak to actual owners of this car.
Agreed. All he had to do is talk to actual owners and they'll tell the real story.
The w220 was and still is, a great car.
gorgeous car
Absolutely the point i made above. Completely disagree, he should speak to owners of this beauty.
Ugly ass looking interior.
I think Doug mentioned mostly everything. Compared to the W140, it wasn’t as imposing. I think the W221 is the best as it combines both the subtleness of this car with the toughness of the W140. I think that their intention with the W220 was too also make it more sporty. It’s kinda funny because if you look at the 7-Series E65, its like BMW wanted to become more like an S-Class and the S-Class wanted to become more like the 7-Series. Almost like a personality swap
Most sensible comment in the whole thread. THHHHISSSS... is what Doug was talking about. Yes, most prior S Class owners felt this way, and no, nothing about Doug's review hints at racism.
So true. Actually the interior of every BMW at the time, very square and symmetrical, looked so much more premium and at complete odds with the rounded/American looking interiors of the W220/W211/W203
@@fruitpunch5260 Having had experience with both W220 S and W211 E, I must admit that I liked the latter more. It felt more solid and imo better looking. I don’t think the W220 looks all that bad, but I never liked how the door lines integrate into the roofline and not go around the windows. I think that also contributes towards the slight color mismatch between the front doors and side fenders. The W211 and W221 fixed that.
I think the model after.. that got a facelift eventually, but barely changed it.. and still had the same interior, which was a 7 Series was direct competitor and had an awesome interior in comparison !
I have had several W220 from back in the day up until 2019. First was the 2004 S660 biturbo. Amazing car back then and had 0 problem with it then i sold it when it was about 4 years old and had 50k miles. Then in around 2015 got several S280, S320L and S350L. The pre facelift S320 was rather bland but i bought it just because it only had 15k miles on it. It was relatively ok, but definitely not as satisfying as any post facelift W220. The other W220 i had were all the facelifted version and even today i can still recommend a facelifted W220 for anyone who wants it but just make sure the car had been very very well taken care of. My friend got a very cheap 05 S350L and as the price reflected, the condition was poor. When you deal with a poorly kept W220, it really doesnt matter how much money you are willing to spend to take it back to mint condition because it will just never happen.
This one, especially in AMG form was always my favorite. I guess it depends on when you grew up

Doug complains this “hated” S-Class generation doesn’t have a touch screen, but no S-Class had a touchscreen until the newest model introduced 6 months ago. Mercedes never believed in reaching so far across the dash when your eyes should be kept on the road, hands on steering wheel. Remote buttons on the wheel was the long term ergonomic principle for the tactile feedback touchscreens omit. That’s what made these 2000’s interiors so desirable- intuitive control without the disgusting fingerprints and glaring reflections.
even the w222? I don't remember, but I doubt that
Most of the hate for the W220 is down to quality issues that were fixed by 2000. I'd have a well-kept W220 over the new S Class any day.
Thank you!
@@jordanbell4420 The hate also comes from corrosion protection issues, but those were fixed by 2003. Even the earlier cars varied wildly. They overestimated the lifespan of the cathodic dip solution and got the formula wrong. Some cars were well-protected. Some weren't. Mechanically great cars.
I bet you people on the comments do actually murder people for driving newer cars.
I miss my 2000 S500 it gave me hell as far as repairments because I bought for 6,500 back in 2012 like electric system and the somatic air pump and air bag leaks under the wheels. Overall the motor was tuff 💪🏽 it held me down
Drove it for about ten days, loved every single day of driving it. Didn't find the pen storage at the time, thanks for sharing that 😅😅 What I did find, was the built in tv. This car actually had VHF/UHF tv reception!
The main advantage of the LED brake lights was not their brightness or longevity. It was the reaction time, LEDs do not need to brighten-up when they are turned on, as opposed to a bulb that requires a couple of tenths of a second to reach its full brightness after turning on. This makes the brake light visible to other drivers that little bit earlier.
I think LED brake lights are better than incandescent or halogen brake light, they instantly light up and do not fade, giving indeed better reaction time. Also more visible even when the sun shining at the brake lights. Same deal with LED turn signals and LED reverse lights. People may complain about LED headlights, but people must admit LED use less electricity and fuel compared to incandescent or halogen. LED on cars are more common now than 20 years ago.
@@automation7295 the only downside I found with led lights especially taillights is that during the winter incandescent bulbs put out heat and melt the ice and snow 😂 LEDs are cold and you must clean the taillights yourself.
Doug doesn't go into enough detail that this is the exact type of obsessive safety engineering Mercedes-Benz was already legendary for, and what a lot of their longtime customers were still buying the cars for.
LEDs are cool until it snows.

Never hated it at all (drove with two of them as a pessenger) and also never met anybody hating it. Its absolute automobile art. The ideas, the little tricks and engineering to the detail is outstanding specially for that time. The design back then was groundbreaking and distinctive elegant and modern compared to the boxy cars of that era. The whole video just points out actually how great it was and still kinda is. Still I love your reviews, Mr. DeMuro. Keep up the great work.
i dont hate it either i love it in fact
Likewise, I've never met someone that didn't like the 220 chassis. I think the 221 is the one that got more flack for the weird fender flare and styling.
I agree the styling was very good for its time and that Doug is looking thru the wrong lens at it. The 221 is arguably a more controversial design (although not as dramatic the 7 series from that era).
I bet Doug is the only one here hating it.
I have an 04" S430 w/ AMG package (sport bumper front/rear, 5 spoke amg chrome rims, and amg tuned Transmission) and aside from a dead battery and a few electrical gremlins it's been a very reliable car. It's the ultimate daily driver for work, perfect for traffic.
They were hated by a certain demographic. People who bought and owned them from 2005 until 2015. Where the car was still expensive and expensive to fix. After 2015 they dropped so low in price it really didn’t matter how much it cost to fix because it was a lot of car for the money. The style aged well with time and everyone who owns one or wants one today remembers it from their childhood as a flagship Mercedes.

There was also a granite / marble version. Very durable inside of super strong leather. The interior is much better made than the W140 predecessor. The previous version was heavier, hence probably talking about cost cuts, not quality ... the interior of this car is the biggest advantage, it looks great at night
In 1998 nobody knew that plastic switches were not luxury yet, this notion was invented later.
Exactly.
My father had one of these about 10 years ago. It needed a new upper engine wiring harness. The dealer cost was $8500! To be clear, my father worked for the Mercedes dealership so that was the best price available. He ended up building his own harness for about $80. That worked but only a couple of months later the transmission failed. He junked it.
Also my father bought it from the previous owner for $2500 because they were completely fed up with the cost of maintenance.

The corner of the internet comments sections that don’t own Mercedes hates it, you mean The only thing I could point to as a car guy alive when it came out was the fact that all the other Benz’s had the bubble headlights which were new and extremely popular and good looking and they left it off of the flagship (s class)

It's actually true. This was a soft looking S class and the W140 is still well regarded today and much better known than the W220. Plus, the cloudy headlights succumbing to UV on the W220 further cheapened it.
I worked at a European mechanic shop here in Texas, and our W220 was a shop car. It was a black on tan, base model, s430, that we snagged for cheap. That car carried wheels and tires, engines, we used it to tow cars a couple times. We did the bare minimum to keep it running and it was clapped! Car was a ton of fun though, drifted it, did donuts, burnouts, etc. The W220 will always hold a special place in my heart, and I hope to snag an S55 of that generation. Great engine, great chassis, great styling.
Iconic car. Flagship Mercedes of my childhood, I think it looks very elegant.
I owned this in the S430. Loved it. I don't know why he thinks it was hated. My neighbor has one now. Everytime I drive by their house I say to myself, "I used to have one of those". I thought I was the sh!t back then.
