Location: Burgers' Zoo, Arnhem - The Netherlands
On Saturday, September 30, 2023, the world-famous chimpanzee Tushi gave birth to a young one. The agile 31-year-old great ape achieved world fame at Royal Burgers' Zoo when she knocked a filming drone out of the air with a stick on April 10, 2015.
On Sunday, October 29, 2023, female chimpanzee Laura gave birth to a young one in Burgers' Zoo. Laura came to Arnhem from the Danish zoo of Aalborg on December 7, 2022. Very quickly after her step-by-step introduction, she turned out to be pregnant. Laura is a chimpanzee of the West African subspecies that is critically endangered in the wild.
Hair loss (alopecia) is a complex phenomenon that is not fully understood either in human or nonhuman primates. Hair loss can occur as the result of a congenital or genetic disorder, or it can develop during the lifetime of the animal. Hair loss occurring throughout life can be further divided into inflammatory and noninflammatory types. In this article, we focus on alopecia in nonhuman primates. We also will refer to humans and other mammals, given that mechanisms of hair loss and potential treatments for this disorder have been studied infrequently in nonhuman primates.

    • Hello, one of the animal keepers told me that they are saggy labia. Correction or removal may lead to complications and is therefore avoided.

    • To: @thegighllsms8101 - Some chimpanzees seem prone to this. The swelling will probably decrease to some extent when the hormones excited by her pregnancy subside. Alice a chimpanzee at Chester Zoo, UK, gave birth eighteen days ago and with both this and her previous pregnancy she has exhibited this feature.

    • I was told it is a sign this is a female and her availability is actually worn on the outside. The more swollen and red the more she is ready to mate. It apparently shrinks down and colour goes away when she is past the age to reproduce. I fumes the males get their cue by sight, bovines get the message by testing urine or smell. Interesting.

The lil girls hair is starting to shape on top of her head. Both babies do not look like all the other babies ive seen. I dont know how to explain. But they are both too cute. Are these 2 Mommas new Moms? The one keeps laying hers down. I still have not figured out which Mommas doing it. The boy or girl. This is the 1st time ive seen this Troop. I hope its not the last. I really like watching them.

    • Me too, but because I film behind glass these vocalizations are barely audible. I mainly hear parents talking with their excited children.
