You Should Learn How to Hack | Ymir Vigfusson | TEDxReykjavik
As a former hacker, Prof. Vigfusson argues that our main hope to improve cyber security is for all of us to adopt the attacker’s mindset and understand how hackers break in. Ymir Vigfusson is a professor, hacker, and entrepreneur. With his students at the SimBioSys lab at Emory University, he performs research into large-scale distributed systems (how should we build large systems?), cybersecurity education (how do we make the world more secure?), and data science (how do we exploit data to monitor epidemics?) He earned his B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Iceland in 2005, and PhD in Computer Science from Cornell University in 2009. In 2013, Ymir co-founded Syndis, now the leading cybersecurity company in Iceland, and the online cybersecurity training platform adversary.io in 2019. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
"YOu cannot understand Defence , if you do not understand offence" ...that is gold
That is pure diamond
That's why I we learned it at school when I did my IT master
So powerful
"Failure is something Hackers are good at..." Me: " I should be a hacker"
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Me too.
bro i am a hacking student and really 1 typing mistake or forgetting a , : ; destroys while code
Sounds like I’ve been a hacker all my life…
Best ever explanation of SQL Injection.
yes , at first sight I knew it was Sql Injection
at first i thought he was using python, then i saw the command
"So what happens now? You get a car! You get a car! Everyone gets a car! It's nice, right" Lmao I love this guy.
the borat in him lol
Did you get a car?
This was the best presentation I have ever heard in my entire life. It is like a whole movie played by one person!!!!
When he started moaning as the Math Professor's wife I knew I was in for a treat
I believe it. I am shocked in my own life how many times I’ve like that of a hacker in different areas! I am surprised how well he put this presentation together but I’m going to create my own path of ethical hacking, it’s almost like the Christian, of life, in a cyber world.

Is the public dead?? Such a great lecture and no reactions at all
The audio is edited to make it easier to hear him, not sure when
Lot of boomers
@@dazza2350 This was recorded in 2019
my bet is that the audience is full of (high school?) kids.
Maybe they need to see his facial expressions 🤔
Why is this so underrated
For security reasons
@@williesmite509 obviously 😂
Because hacking ain't easy and it requires a lot of discipline, effort and dedication to learn it, and with tech evolving so fast whoever wants to dig hacking has to continue learning and never stop, or you could get outdated...
It's only available on dark web...😂😂
That hurts......
As a lady that has gone through some share of emotional and psychological abuse from a narcissist i have learnt to run away when I see any traits of dishonesty and selfishness but sometimes you can’t really know until it happens and I discovered a way to find out before I become a victim again , I was cheated on and betrayed by my partner and blamed myself who his promiscuous behavior until I hacked his device and read through his chat and social media account before I discovered I was being played by someone I gave my totality to , really we have to be wise and know who to give our undying love and respect to
Only few will understand this but I advice and admire anyone that choose to fight it and free themselves from psychological abuses to contact the hacker to help you understand your situation send your requests to the email address below

No one cared about me until I put on the mask
Totally agree
6:52 - you cannot understand defense if you do not understand offense 14:16 - (hacker mindset) 7:47 - motivated not by malice but curiosity 11:57 - (testimonies) 16:24 - make the world safer by becoming a hacker -Ýmir Vigfússon
If you have a partner you love and everything is not going as planned like you both started sometimes it’s a natural progression but if this person doesn’t want to communicate with you to share what they feel towards you or try to rekindle to love , I don’t advice anyone to abandon anyone they love but investigate where that is coming from sometimes it might be finances but if you don’t see any traces of that then resort to hacking their devices to know what is making your relationship move backwards most of the times there is a third party and the earlier you find out the best for you mental health stability because hacking has saved me from problems and intending others to come

Such a great and under appreciated talk
What great about it ? Pretty basic old stuff form early 2000
The audience has been edited out of the audio... You can barely hear them laughing but it sounds like loud laughing. I don't know why they'd remove the audience, it's literally a part of the TED experience!
Maybe they were laughing TOO hard?
@@Th3Bishop3 may be their account balance got suddenly 0 .lol
It's actually terrifying to know that the knowledge of the population about cyber security is not growing. There is literally a Digital War going on, yet people live in oblivion thinking everything is okay. A famous quote i tend to use come from what people think here in Norway "The technology have come so far" everytime i hear a variation of this quote i look at people, and i pity them for how little they actually know, and the simple life they must live. Yet they are the victims..
They are hiding themselves, you can't find them easily. You see how many people see this video, there are many more people watched this video through any opensouce video player, but those people not counted here. FunFact- If you really want to see how many hackers or cybersecurity people doing hackify things, check tor user analytics. Because who uses tor, they know who they are.
could you explain why you pity them?
In america for most the tech controls them i control the tech not the other way around
@@georgiyefimov7287 because they dont know the scope of exactly how much has changed how vulnerable they really are or how much security is just a show to keep out those not smart or determined enough to bypass it theyre protected by the fact that most people who hack respect the power they have they rely on companies to keep them safe when most companies dont do their due dilligence to keep hackers out they just take your money and do the bare minimum that is why we feel sorry for them

"The perfect explanation to SQL injection doesn't exi-" This guy:
I have to say, to deliver a captivating, engaging presentation like this in his second language is nothing short of astounding. I'm Australian and this bloke speaks english better than me...
Ted is saving every part of me. 6 years. Been like a hibernating polar bear wake then sleep. Im still learning about how to talk. God bless u all at ted
Absolutely incredible talk. Love how the guy does different voices/accents. 😂😂😂 A lot to take away from this.
That's that alot of cyber security positions do nowadays, you learn how to break in to find weakness. White-hat-hackers literally do that, you break into something (with permission of course) to then show them their weaknesses. so really this guy is so correct.
"Very nice" is the best part of the presentation.
Great talk . Thank you, bless you. All your dreams come true .
This man is so good, and so humorous, one of the best ted talks
You don’t clap in the middle of such an insightful speech...not even after coz you’re left wondering
This guy was phenomenal!! Thanks for sharing TeDx :)
This is amazing. The SQLi analogy was spot on (and really funny)
15 years ago I had some real trouble understanding why it was called an injection.... he explained it in 15 seconds!
Mr Ymir Vigfusson, the presentation was so thoughtful and realistic, i really want to go deep how this people think does the things they do.
Such a wonderful talk!! I plan to become a cyber defender and this gentleman makes me want to learn more about the offensive side of cyberspace 👍👍♥️
This was really nice and a really good explanation of a sql injection
Commenting for KZhead algorithms to recommend such talks in feed.

MOM'S SPAGHETTI
Exactly what I was thinking. I mean, I was waiting for the beat to drop and everything. I'm so disappointed that it didn't.
i saw that too
So far the best lecture in yt
Wonderful talk! Loved it
I went to school with him in the 90's. We wanted the master code for the bios on the school computers, he coded a replica of the login and made the teacher put in the code. It then froze, saved the code and had to be restarted. Smart dude
5:38 That part was good.
Thank you!
Very underrated 👏🏽
Thank you Sir!

Remember the part when he explains how senior hackers use smaller hackers as decoy? Well what would a senior hacker do if he needs more of them..
Sh*t 🙆♂️
Very good and informative video.

This underrated!
4:55 he watched too much Borat 😂
I feel bad, no one clapped for him, or was even in the slightest to be excited.
They were laughing and clapping actually. But they cut their voices in the video till the end of the talk.
This guys amazing
so please: if your developer says the development time will be more than you want to hear: believe him. if he has not the time neccessary for clean implementation and testing it will result in security issues.
Even with the necessary time, and with a clean work and testing there are still security issues. But in most cases security vulnerabilities comes from person. Even if you have the top protection and security, you having password of “1234” will not work.
its like how cyberpunk 2077 has turned out. the devs had to rush it and now it has a lot of bugs making it laggy af
Thats why white hat hackers are called in to test the new software.
Astonishing
u hav a unique mindset, sooo coollllll.
i dont know if normal people need to know hacking but the developers should. thats in many cases the true problem. basic security best practices are not applied on a lot of self written code.
Exactly, is always developers fault
I'm so passionate about becoming a hacker 🥺✨
the "tattaratta" killed me good job man in representing the culture
Very inspiring talk. Hope youtube algorithm will suggest more like these if I post this comment
I love this man
Wow awesome vid!
Is like chess game, offence and defence offence is trying to attack while defense is shield up offence trying to crack the code so he can enter the building. Who ever has thise strong mindset he can break enything even the law of physics
He is like a psychopathic good villain character. He actually is!!

what about on the internal software for employees, that looks like it was made for MS-DOS.

Good video
He quoted Eminem. I’m becoming a hacker right now!!!
Mom's spaghetti
Lancelot of the Lake its ready
I agree with a lot of what he say's but hacking is a lot harder than people think. Just go down the path and you'll learn a lot :)
Am I the only one that wants to learn how to hack for the fun of it, when you search it up on reddit everyone is talking about the fastest way to get a job but I just want to learn whatever I need to learn for fun
"Failure is what hackers are good at" You know I'm somewhat of a hacker myself
Ted talk in a balaclava? You have my attention sir.
definitely needs to do a disney voice over
if we knew more about hacking there would be no hackers
how?

also known as quality control. same thing.
Summary: The attack is being done with something learned through a keyboard. So why don't you do the same, learn something through a keyboard and use it as a shield.
