    • Oxford Union is actually beginning to scare me! Katie Hopkins?? Take a look at her Wikipedia page and try to swallow the fact that this is someone that Oxford University sees as a reasonable representative of conservative opinion. I have never in my life been so happy to not be associated in any way with Oxford. If you're going to have Katie Hopkins at Oxford Union debates why not Alex Jones or the current Grand Wizard of Ku Klux Klan, or just cut to the chase and just hold your debates at Broadmoor?

Looking back at at Katie it was a lovely thought and gesture so under all that anger and armour there is a moralistic heart, It was quit hard to hear what was happening about it all but managed to see her nice side!!

      @erikthenorviking8251@erikthenorviking82514 жыл бұрын
    • Deplatforming does not win a debate, it avoids it by denying the opposing view the same rights you insist on for yourself. Having a debate where only one side is allowed to express themselves is not a debate at all. To make electricity flow, you need at least two opposite poles. magnitism allows for many poles, and is stronger for it. What a boring world where everyone is equal, equally intelligent, equally paid, equally employed equally unimportant, equally alone with nothing to say because everyone already knows everything equally. Equal opportunity rather than uniformity, and the right to disagree are vital.

Most students were disinterested at the time in the union's activities which were dominated by the socialist worker movement. However, the majority of ordinary students turned up to vote against "no platforming" for all the reasons Katie has eloquently provided. We must protect everyone's right to be offended. We either want a world where we put others in a position to decide what we are allowed to hear, or we expose ourselves to all opinion and ideas in the search for a broader understanding with our own reason and intelligence as a guide to deciding what to embrace and what to discard. It is nothing less than hubris to claim you can assess and evaluate ideas without a genuine attempt to listen to and understand them.

    @ChuddmasterZero@ChuddmasterZero4 жыл бұрын
    • ChuddmasterZero Sadly this world is dawning. The result depicted in 1984 is effected by the means in Brave New World. Debate is reduced to a mere expletive laden line in the comments section. It's facile to ever think social media gives us a platform. Very few, even here, write after thinking and analysing the issues raised. Intelligence is feared. Ignorance is promoted. I don't like the class ridden depiction of the dinner suited and evening gowned and I'm rather happy to see it disappear in the audience. But that's where we are. Dress an ignorant imbecile in a suit and they're a crowning glory in business. We've put image before any sane interpretation of potential and ability. And that's why free speech collapses. Our narcissism is resplendent in its superior grandiose enforcement of right and wrong because they are, above all else, right. Narcissists don't debate or agree to differ. They are always right. Is that the society we want? Full of weak Influencers? Sadly, it seems we do.

I understand free speech, but she said some slanderous things about people. I do think she was ill-advised and in some respects, a bit naive. The Sun and Daily Mail encouraged her to be outrageous and controversial, but when things got rough, they turned on her and discarded her in a flash. It doesn't make sense to expect a speaker to signed a form agreeing not to cause offence.That is not the responsibility of the speaker.It is the choice a listener makes as to whether they take offence or not.Talking about and debating about controversial subjects is actually a pathway to gaining a better understanding.We don't always have to agree with everything that is said, the point is we will have listened to each others point of view.This leaves room for further debate and discussion, or not, choice is the key hear and that's important.Freedom of speech is something we should never give up.
