The Shetland Sheepdog, also known as the Sheltie, is an extremely intelligent, quick, and obedient herder from Scotland's remote and rugged Shetland Islands. Shelties bear a strong family resemblance to their bigger cousin, the Collie.
The Shetland Sheepdog is a small, active, and agile herding dog standing between 13 and 16 inches at the shoulder. The long coat is harsh and straight, with a dense undercoat, and comes in black, blue merle, and sable, with white markings. The coat, along with a long, wedge-shaped head; small, three-quarter erect ears; and deep-chested, level-backed torso, give Shelties the look of a rough-coated Collie in miniature.
Bright and eager Shelties are easy trainers and world-class competitors in obedience, agility, and herding trials. They are sensitive and affectionate family dogs, highly in tune with the mood of the household. They like to bark and tend to be reserved toward strangers-two qualifications of an excellent watchdog.

  • Anything you have to do for sheltie maintenance is never a chore. It is just another opportunity to touch, hold, and love around with this divine little creature.

  • Spot on. My boy of fourteen-and-a-half years passed last week, and he was just wonderful. Incredibly loving and gentle, and full of personality. Atypically, he was pretty extroverted - he loved attention, even from strangers - Although he was TERRIFIED of nursing homes. RIP Jack, you were the best boy.

    • @@Hypnotic__Huskk I'm doing much better now. I have a new guy named Samwise (9 months old, same breed). He's been lovely. I'll never stop missing Jack, and was absolutely crushed when he passed, but Sam's done wonders for easing the ache. Life goes on, and it's been nice to discover that new loves will come to soothe the pain of the old. Thank you for your comment, and I hope you're having a lovely day. You've certainly made mine a bit brighter ♡

    • I have an extrovert too. He is my second Sheltie and very different from the first. When we picked him up as a 10 week old pup he was the one that came over to us. The rest hid behind the breeder. To this day he has no problem meeting people.

    • They bark, My first barked a lot. That was fine. My second is off the charts. Still my favorite dog of all time, but the barking, even for a more mellow Sheltie, is way beyond dog normal.

  • For someone like myself, who didn’t get diagnosed with level 1 autism until I was an adult, my sheltie was essentially the only friend I had until I moved to Chicago back in the late 1980’s. She passed 2 weeks after Dad died, who died 2 weeks short of his 51st birthday. She was my “lap buddy”: whenever I sat down in the living room, I’d get “the look” from her. I’d slap my lap, and she’d be in my lap.

  • Hi :) I own a sheltie for 4 years now - and i cannot agree with the cons. Our sheltie (it is a she) is the most loving and not-problem-making dog i know. She has no problem with staying home alone (if anyone has to stay home she is annoyed), she loves the frisbii and long walks. Her inteligence is sometimes amazing - specially when it comes to food-toys and daily rutine enforcement. Her coat is not so hard to maitain - grooming once/twice a week is enough :)

  • I agree with everything except the grooming maintenance. My Sheltie always had a beautiful, shiny, thick lustrous coat with only a monthly bath and once or twice 5 minute weekly brushing with a Pin brush. Twice a year spring and fall she would shed heavy for a couple weeks and need daily brushing but that was it. When I walked her people would marvel at her beauty and Intelligence. She was beautiful until the day she passed from painful Bone Cancer at age 11. RIP.... my sweet Wendy girl I will always miss you terrible.

  • We had a sheltie growing up & if he got out we just told him "You better get home!" 😂 We didn't have a fenced yard. He never just ran off. He was a very smart, calm, & good boy.

    • if your yard was fenced in you could just let your dog out and it would run around the yard on its own. my last sheltie could entertain herself for hours doing this.

  • I recognise everything except how incredibly often they should be groomed, their coat is almost self-maintaining in my experience. It never smells, not even after walking in the rain, it never matts, I check daily but she doesn't require nearly as much brushing as most of these videos say it does. I always get asked how much work it is because people compliment her lovely shiny coat all the time. I almost feel guilty when I say I hardly have to brush her at all :S Except twice a year when she's shedding her undercoat - then I brush an entire separate dog out of fur almost every day for two weeks XD

    • My parents are on their 3rd Sheltie, who is now 11 years old and they would get their coats brushed every week, as you say. No need for daily brushing unless you want them to look immaculate. Washing is also only on an as-needed basis, so quite rare. Teeth brushed nightly. Not sure about nails but definitely not as often as this video suggests!

  • I'm on my 3rd and 4th Shelties. My girls lived a long time. Our tri-color girl had congenital issues with her back and back legs but she was the best, sweetest little girl and loved running in the back yard. I lost her in 2019 at age 12 to cancer. Our sable girl lived to be 16 and died last year. We got the boys as we lost each girl. Our bi-black boy was born the same day our tri-color died (and I found him by accident). Our bi-blue boy was born the day after we lost our sable and again, I just lucked out in finding him. I still want a girl tri-color to work with to be my service dog. The bi-black was supposed to be, but he's a big daddy's boy so that was hopeless. The bi-blue is a bit stubborn and isn't taking to the service work, he's more interested in hanging out in the yard and bugging his brother. Shelties are the best dogs and I can't even think of life without one. They travel well, we've had them on 2 week driving vacations with no problem. We do have a kennel we've used for 30 years (our big border collie stayed there before we got the first Shelties) and our dogs love the place so we don't worry if we can't take them with us, they'll get lots of love and attention.

  • I had them growing up and have one now. No problem at all with shedding and maintenance. He's such an easy dog cause he's so smart and wants to make me happy. Goes with me to all my job sites...I'm a builder. He's the best and sweetest ever. I love him soooo much. He's so loyal. I think I'll just always have shelties. There's something about how sensitive and sweet they are. I can kiss his sweet long nose all day.

  • Own a sheltie cross and they are amazing dogs honestly. I teach him a trick like go around my legs with a clicker and after two attempts he will know it for the rest of his life. He's crossed with a jack russel though which means when i take him off the lead he's very difficult to get back and is always wrestling other dogs lol

  • Shelties are simply an amazing breed. They are not a breed for everyone. They require some work & devotion from their owners, but they give that back many times over. I have 2 sisters from the same litter. Both are so beautiful & loving, & they each have their own personalities. They have excellent vision & hearing, & do make excellent watchdogs. They will definitely alert you to anything out of the ordinary, but they are not violent, but very vocal. When I'm hanging out with them in the woods behind the house, one will take up a position facing in one direction & the other will take up watch facing the opposite direction. I try to brush them at least once a week, & more when they are blowing their undercoat. I primarily use a small slicker brush, & can get quite a few little clumps of undercoat fur. I call these Tribbels, from the original Star Trek sries episode, The Trouble With Tribbels".

  • I had one for ten years. (Ex wife took him) if you get a chance to get one do it. I live in the south so I had him shaved in spring and no fur problems. Great with kids (herding) Very smart, almost thought he knew what I was saying. I can’t stress that enough. Very smart. The only bad thing I had with mine was when he got fleas. Almost impossible to get rid of those little bastards. Other than that great breed.

  • The sheltie is a great choice for a pet the only problem I see is the amount of maintenance required for its coat. I would think It could get very expensive if they have to be groomed every four to six weeks
