    • @@OogaBooga-qs8ns There's really no replacement for doing what you're doing working and learning on your own stuff. If you don't know something or figure it out, somebody somewhere has already figured it out and posted it online. I learned to be an OK machinist by buying an industrial lathe and Bridgeport with some support equipment. I've done customer jobs and those machines have already paid for themselves many times over. I like to see younger people get into working with mechanical things. I did when I was younger and I've had my own business since 2000 and my repair shop since 2008. I do collision repair on semi trucks and trailers. Good luck to you and Merry Christmas.

  • You definitely need a back flash arrestor between the fuel and the carburetor. One misfire, hung valve etc and you have an instant fuel air bomb with fragmentation. Awesome job making the engine from scrap pieces.

  • Interesting thing to note when making pistons: they're not perfectly cylindrical. Because of heat expansion, the piston skirt is actually slightly oval, with the span across the gudgeon pin also being slightly oval in the opposite direction. When the piston heats up to operating temperature, it all evens out and becomes cylindrical. If this isn't factored in, you risk the piston skirt seizing in the bore and tearing your piston in half. This is much less of a problem with air cooled engines though, because their larger tolerances usually make this machining process redundant, so some manufacturers don't bother.
