I did not expect a Metroidvania reboot of an early 80s Atari 2600 game.
It isn't. It's a rebooted prequel to the 2004 reboot of an 80s Atari 2600 game.
@@trise2033Yes, because that is totally less convoluted lol
Whoa this is heavy.
I said the same thing about Blaster Master when the Zero trilogy was released.
A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
…Wasn’t this game originally about alien flies?
Well, it is now about anime thighs
It was. My question is what could have they done with that? It was a 2600 game made in the late 80's. I'm hoping that if this does well, they try to take from the original story a bit.
@@ripcase1990If you can't make a "Yar's Revenge" game that actually has anything to do with Yar's Revenge, then just don't call it that in the first place.
@@legtendgav556 That's what you get with the help of the creators of Shantae and River City Girls. Nice rhyme tho.
@@legtendgav556Masterful play on words. 👏🏻😁
Atari's now considered indie, damn.
How the mighty have fallen.
They certainly aren't as big as they were before, but I'd say this title is considered indie mostly because of its developers (WayForward).
Like Nintendo. Remember Cadence of Hyrule? And Advance Wars?
It all came full circle, since Atari technically started off as indie
@eddmario Yeah, I suppose.
Casual clothes anime girl in a sci-fi setting is something I am here for. Love me some wayforward Metroidvanias.
A Yars’ Revenge Metroidvania by WayForward? Wasn’t expecting that
*Metroid-like, not Metroidvania. Castlevania, at it’s roots, is NOT like Metroid.
@@raidraptor-ultimatefalcon2634 Hence why the term was coined to refer to those later Castlevania games that resembled Super Metroid. It's a very well established genre name, you don't get any points for etymological puritanism...
@@jgodden8022 Castlevania turned INTO a Metroid-like, not help create the genre, therefore the “vania” part of “Metroidvania” shouldn’t exist. Castlevania gave up it’s identity when SotN released. Let’s not pretend like it did anything nearly as good as the game series it was trying to rip-off.
@@raidraptor-ultimatefalcon2634try looking up metroidvania it's a real genre of games and that's what this is.
@@raidraptor-ultimatefalcon2634 Uhh... no? First of all, Symphony of the Night isn't even the first Metroidvania Castlevania game, Simon's Quest is (while it's not as conventional of a Metroidvania as later games, it shares most of the common traits people associate with Metroidvanias, such as an open world full of collectables needed to unlock new areas, a leveling system, etc.). That game released in 1987, a year after the original Metroid. While Symphony of the Night didn't invent the genre, it, alongside Super Metroid, were what popularized the genre and established its traditional conventions. On another note, by your logic, Metroid shouldn't be a part of the genre's name, considering Metroid didn't invent it either (there was already several games, such as 1984's Brain Breaker and 1985's Dragon Slayer II, that used the gameplay of Metroidvanias, Metroid is just the oldest series with said gameplay to get popular). Calling the Metroidvania Castlevania games a rip-off of Metroid is also wrong, since the developers have openly stated that the games took inspiration from Zelda II, not Metroid. Also, "Let’s not pretend like it did anything nearly as good as the game series it was trying to rip-off." Yeah, let's totally act like Symphony of the Night isn't considered by an extremely large amount of people to be one of the greatest video games of all time.
Let me clarify. WayForward is creating a reboot of the first video game I ever played and cherished on my Atari 2600, even though all my friends already own an 8-bit NES. Can you promise to never cease being awesome?
So... here's what I know, based on my knowledge of Yars Revenge: Yar is an alien fly. (..or supposed to be, because Atari graphics.) The enemy is referred to as the Qotile, which looks like the shape on Yar's shirt in this trailer. The goal of the original game, such as it is, is to fly to the right, dodge the floating probe dot and the Qotile's attack, break apart the Qotile's shield, and launch the Zorlon Cannon (which you get from making it to the right side of the screen) into the Qotile. Rinse and repeat. (Also, there's a safe zone, but that's not too important.) So, how they're going to turn a single-screen game into a Metroidvania experience starring an anime girl taking down QoTech is going to be interesting.
Well, let's compare your game description to the trailer: "Yar is an alien fly." Emi seems to grow wings at one point; and then there's the figure behind her in the title card (her full transformation, perhaps?) "The enemy is referred to as the Qotile," The bad guys are from QoTech "dodge the floating probe dot" Stealth seems to be a part of the gameplay. "break apart the Qotile's shield" We see her dismantling (absorbing?) some kind of barrier at one point. "launch the Zorlon Cannon" Back to the part where she grows wings, she looks ready to Kamehameha something. "Also, there's a safe zone," At one point, she's hiding from a guard robot in a shadowy area. So far, it looks like they're doing their homework on this.
0:10 nice tribute to Nolan bushnell (the founder of atari) note: for those who hasn't spotted it yet, there's the name "nolan" on the top of one of the buildings located on the top left corner of this video
Nicely found!
@@atari thanks. care to give my comment a like?
A new Metroidvania by Wayforward with anime aesthetic?! Sign me in!
Are their games always so stiff looking? Or do you think it's cus it's still in development
@@VashVicious2 Their expertise is in 90's style pixelart, so it's hard to say if that's the intention or if it's still in development.

Way Forward knows what it's doing when it comes to protagonists. When I think of female protagonists done right especially from a western developer these are the folks I go to.
I still have no idea what this has to do with Yars' Revenge. Looks like a completely unrelated game that Atari just slapped the Yars branding on.
yes
How about you play the game to find out.

*WayForward* Company Remastered *Yars?* This is Super Awesome! Can't wait to play this game on the Nintendo Switch System this year!
I appreciate the "HSWWSH" on the building at the start.

I still have yars revenge on the game boy. I never thought this series would get a reboot. Much less a metroidvania. Plz let this be good. Plz...

Why this is a Yar's Revenge sequel I have absolutely ZERO idea, but it's by the folks who did River City Girls and it looks fun so hey, sure! Next up, Berzerk the visual novel dating sim and the new Adventure tower defense game featuring a hot nerd with square glasses.
*Writes down ideas* Go on, go on.
Y cant Yars Rising crawl
PFFFFT
Can't crawl if you're rising.
Wow...a sequel to Yar's Revenge on the Atari 2600. Thats a deep cut if I've ever heard one.
We're going deeper!
highlight of the direct for me. definitely picking this one up.
It was the highlight for us too!
damn, mighty no.10 looking.. what you'd expect
Yars' Revenge was always my absolute favorite Atari game!
Yars as platformer? Did not see that coming, but looks really good.
This isn’t Yars but still looks fun. Play Yars: Recharged for a real remake and then this one for a completely new take
I hope this isn't a reflection of the final product. Looks very bare bones at the moment.
That's WayForward in a nutshell. Shantae is the best example of all style no substance in gaming, people are distracted by the great art and music to the point they don't realize the gameplay and story are quite poor.
This looks awesome, but I feel the character animations feel very stiff.
This was really unexpected!
Cute character design I will add it to my backlog
Sucks that you can’t wishlist it yet. At least not from the website.
Haha I remember Yars Revenge. Love Wayforward too. Interesting combo.
We think so too!
Yikes, I hope they put some work in before it actually comes out-at the very least swap out those placeholder animations.
I like Wayforward. And I like Atari. But, hm, I don't know...Something about the gameplay looks...unpolished...
Her movement speed feels a little slow.
It looks like it was going to be something much different like a robot/samus-like suit but they slapped her model onto it and called it a day. It looks clunky.
@@Gamemaster64 Te game isn't out yet, so we're not really able to say they called it a day. It's coming out sometime this year, which means there's potentially still time for polish. Will be interesting to see.
@@OptimusNiaaThat is true. That could very well change, but as a first impression it doesn't bode well. First impressions are everything.
@@Gamemaster64 Yeah, it's not going to change. And even if it does I'm still not going to play it. Not with such an obnoxious protagonist.
I don't see the problem 😕
Game can't come soon enough. Can't wait to see Emi in action!
I'm getting this. Looks like a Shadowrun / River City Girls / Metroid cross. Atari is really doing a good job coming back from the dead.
Everyone else: “I thought you were dead”? Atari: “My death was, highly exaggerated”.
I really really really want to like this idea. Bringing back an OG IP from Atari as a modern metroidvania sounds so exciting. But... man that gameplay looks slow and stiff...
It looked fine to me.
Very nice im getting this for my switch when it comes out
Didn't expect to see the Yar's series become a metroidvania! And with such a change in setting too! Well, taking the other recent games in the series as reference, cus I don't think the Atari games really had much of a visual setting to begin with 😅 probably described in the manual tho, which I assume is what the next games went with. Either way I'm very curious to see how this goes!
I'm not sure how I feel about this.
The Yars love is amazing and I'm here for it!
❤
the Mighty No. 9 art style was a bold choice.
big oof
Reminds me of late 90s~2000s Megaman, but with actual 3D instead of pre-rendered sprites
I want miku
This looks great, but I'd rather get a WayForward metroidvania starring an anime girl AND a proper Yars game, with the unique mechanics that come with it and which I love. But hey, we take what we can get. And I still have Yars Recharged to fix my Yar cravings. So bring it on!
Yars Rising looks really something amazing 2D Anime Platforming with a beautiful Main Character girl. I'm so excited can't wait when this will be relased in later this yar! 😮❤
This looks...interesting. Will remain catiously optimistic. (Also...can we get a new crystal castles?)
ngl i might buy this
Magical girls into the adaption action show.
Im so happy yar is back, first it was a cameo in pixel ripped and now a brand new game. Looking forward to see if time has been cruel to her.
This should be interesting!
I will be honest this is the first time ever I am hearing about Yars' Revenge lol!
I would absolutely love this game to succeed!
Is it just me or do we have a lot of Metroid Dread parallels? If that's the case, nothing wrong with it. Though if it's a reboot of an old game, I guess it makes the other way around. Either way, so far, doesn't seem bad.
Okay people give us your ideas on what other classic Atari games should have this kind of reboot treatment like centipede or breakout or missile command or haunted house or my personal favorite asteroids or if you really want to go nuts the sword quest games.
Need more Metroidvania games! This looks fun!
No space shooter?
Metroidvania+Wayforward? I MUST HAVE IT!
Ah yes, the famous Yars Revenge IP, begging for an anime metroidvania spinoff

The best thing they showed at yet another abysmal showcase. Hope this comes to PS5 or PC cause I barely play my Switch.
There's already a Steam store listing.
If she can chew through walls and spit fireballs, I'll buy the damn thing but until then...

I thought Atari was already long gone. Putting that aside, A futuristic city and an Atari logo all in the same clip. My Brain: Blade Runner? Trailer: Yars Rising Me: "...Uh Whaaaaat...!?"
Wayforward made this game? I'll check it out when it gets on sales and wait for deals 😁
Always thought Yars was the name of the big wall of stuff to shoot
Nah that was the Quotile. Yar is the race of flies.
The qotile wasn’t even the wall, that was a shield protecting it
0:44 oh god, i love that valley girl accent 😁 for those who don't know what "valley girl accent" means: "A valley girl is a socioeconomic, linguistic, and youth subcultural stereotype and stock character originating during the 1980s: any materialistic upper-middle-class young woman, associated with unique vocal and California dialect features, from the Los Angeles commuter communities of the San Fernando Valley" from wikipedia
I loved the original Yars Revenge, but this looks sad.
Yars! Yars! Yars! Yars!
Seems like a natural progression. Hey, next let’s make a new Pac-Man game where you use your martial arts skills against werewolves in a submarine. And while we’re at it, let’s make the protagonist a robot angel. You see, somewhere along the way there is fruit.
And not even the same varieties of fruit from the old games, but their sprites have a faux-retro style so it's close enough!
Well this looks cool
I am really excited about this one! It looks like a lot of fun
A cyberpunk Metroidvania? I’m down
Can't go wrong with a WayForward title.
Bakugan says hi!
idk they're pretty hit-or-miss
Look up Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia.
Contra: Operation Galuga says Hi!
This is absolutely the most minimum amount related to Yar's Revenge that something can be and still be related to Yar's Revenge.
What are you talking about? Didn't you see that half-a-second clip of an underbaked hacking minigame that looks like a bargain bin version of the original and might come up a grand total of 5 times in the entire game? What more do you need?
Yare Yare Daze, Yar’s revenge.
Per Atari, “In Yars Rising, players take control of the young hacker Emi Kimura, who is hired by a mysterious patron to infiltrate the shadowy Qotech corporation. ... Embark on Emi’s journey to decipher the mystery of the corporation’s closely guarded secret and uncover her inexplicable bond to a far-off alien race.” Might be more related than on first glance.
It'll all make sense in time ;)
Does she eat shields?
Looks very interesting

Now _there's_ a franchise I haven't heard from in a while!
A modern take on Yars Revenge, but as a Metroidvania game. Pretty cool that Atari and WayForward are making this game together.

wow, check off Unexpected Thing from the bingo card
not interested in the game, but if this is the new game engine by wayforward the implications for the next shantae game is high Context: wayforward made the ducktales remastered game back in 2013. they made it 2.5d and it was their first game to do so. then they used the engine for shantae half genie hero and seven sirens. this engine looks like thay have replaced the 2d character sprites with 3d models.
Which is a shame because WayForward's greatest ability was making 2D sprites. Their GBC work was their finest. Their 3D work has always been...lacking...and really really badly optimized.
I really hope this isn't the direction they go with Shantae. This looks unappealing at best.
