  • Really disappointed in the comments I'm reading here. Michelle is a martial artist, a mother, a wife, top ranked UFC fighter, Invicta champ, and overall great person. Give her the respect she deserves.

  • I do think it's important to point out, for all us non-professionals, that's it's important to master the basic step-across side kick (the typical martial arts side-kick) in order to then move onto doing it all in one motion. If you go straight to this variation, it may come out often enough in training, but having it ready in a fight you might mess up and misjudge range/timing.

    @jorgeherrera1074@jorgeherrera10745 жыл бұрын
    • I don't think that is the hardest part of the side kick. I'd say the hardest part is after you have chambered your leg, when you go to extend it, to also involve your torso. They didn't really cover it here, but Joe Rogan has some video's where he covers it (for GSP and Brian Callen). The nice thing about this video is they talk about doing the foot step behind at the same time as chambering your leg (not separate movements). So the kick is overall quicker.

      @whater39@whater395 жыл бұрын
    • Senseless Nonsense In American TKD we called this a sliding side kick. I personally used it to create space more than anything. Where the side kick shines for me is as a way to knock the wind out of a wildly charging opponent. Step offline then drive the kick into the ribs.

  • That kick was always my best weapon; from southpaw also most of the time. If you are fast enough with it, it's intimidating because it can strike so high but isn't so simple to block. It really is the jab of kicking, but it's a jab that hits like a sledgehammer. I have, when my kick was jammed, just lifted a charging opponent off the ground with it and thrown them backward -- if you are on balance with your back foot planted, it's not even that hard to do. Fantastic kick for those with fast feet and strong legs... much better than snap kicks, which have more limited power. Funny to hear that she uses it a lot because she is small. I am average height with longer legs and shorter torso/arms, and for me it was a way to avoid throwing hands also. My bad punching range makes close quarters a bit awkward. I always used the threat of kicks and knees to control range, and kept my hands up for defense rather than punching much. She's a sport fighter, so she doesn't think/talk about the primary combat use of this kick. It attacks the kneecap and knee, not the thigh. They throw at the thigh because of sporting rules, to avoid permanently crippling an opponent -- it's considerably less effective there, and arguably not worth it unless you have a very fast side kick. It's good to learn to throw it quickly with either foot, and from any position rather than just certain set stances. Openings can be ephemeral. You see the side of the knee and hit it almost on reflex... similar to how a low snapping roundhouse is thrown to the thigh in sport fighting. There's a little hopping sidekick I never see people use that was effective for me. It's the same sidekick that she demonstrated, but is thrown just as you switch to southpaw. From a traditional boxing stance, you sort of pounce to your left as part of circling your opponent. Instead of maintaining stance, you switch to southpaw and immediately throw the sidekick if you have a target (which you often will). Your opponent will almost always be adjusting their own stance to meet you, so they won't be backing away or rushing in. Their feet being slightly out of position can set you up for a kick to the leg or body. I have landed a few to the face, but it's harder because you have much less range as you start kicking above your hip... I would not advise people to throw any high kick unless you are 100% sure the opponent isn't ready for it, but if you do then a side kick is the kick to throw since it leads into a tumble away from your target. With other kicks you can lose your balance more easily throwing that high.

  • I love using the side kick. Before I thought t was weird that I’m an orthodox guy but kick fast from southpaw with this kick, but after watching this, I guess it’s normal. I almost always find success throwing out a stiff jab or a double jab followed up by a sidekick to the body. It either forces them to block high and expose their body or leave the head unguarded just long enough for me to throw a 2 instead of a sidekick. Great video Shane
