We're no strangers to plumbing drama on our farm, but when our not-garage continuously kept being flooded, and we discovered a leak beneath our ancient granite flagstone courtyard, we thought that disaster loomed and we would have to leave the farm, AGAIN.

  • 🦋 At the end of the video, it was so sweet to see the guardian of the compost pile. I hope that puts a smile on Crusoe’s face because when he saw him laying on the ground, he was so sad. Thank you for taking the time to do that for him. And a nice transition from nap time is too quiet time. A blanket lying on the ground near where you are, and just let them know it’s time to lay quietly and watch the clouds. See how many butterflies fly over your head as you’re resting.

  • John- Since you asked, the one thing is to be consistent with your children. When they are young a stern voice, "put your shoes on." should be enough. Crusoe has learned that he doesn't have to listen to you when you tell him to put his shoes on because 9 out of ten times, that we see him on KZhead, you let him "get away with not putting his shoes on when you tell him to. If he doesn't respond to this then tell him he can't go out without his shoes. The hardest thing about bringing up children is sticking to your guns. Children need boundaries so they can set them later, on themselves. You are both wonderful loving parents, I envy the boys.

  • Quick note on toilet flushing. If you fill some buckets with water. You can gravity flush by pouring water into the toilet usually. We do that to prepare here when we are under the threat of Hurricanes or last year when our pipes froze. It’s obviously only a temporary fix. Keeping you all in our thoughts. Hang in there Tara!

If you like to learn more about it there is a youtube serie of Charles Dowding who does this over 30 years a has great succes with it. It like nature that never digs before it plants anything and about not disturbing the life in the ground and all the little things that live there.

  • With Crusoe’s shoes . It’s a natural consequence that eventually his feet will get cold and he will want to put shoes on . If you absolutely want him to put them on because it’s too cold then give him a gentle choice to put them on himself or you can help , the choice is his . . Or you can say , “ which one do you want to put on first ?” Or “ I’ll put one on and you do the other one . “ You could have a limit that if it’s too cold he has to put them on before he’s allowed outside . Anyway, giving choices seems to work for me in the past when dealing with toddlers . Good luck 🤞💕😊

  • Omg.....how I love your family!! Thank you for inviting us in! As for intelligent little Crusoe, I wouldn't fight him to put shoes on. Wait to see if he comes to it on his own when the ground becomes winter cold. Our grandson barely wore shoes, but refused to wear socks for years...and now as he approaches 30, he tells us that nothing makes him happier than getting a new package of socks to wear! 👟🧦❤

  • You are going to have relatively easy teen years with your boys, I predict 😂 They know so much more about real life challenges and finding solutions than others ❤❤ Just like Joao, I think, who is so helpful and respectful. The Portuguese countryside looks like the best place to raise a family ❤❤

  • It’s right you should be blessed with the farm. You have started to develop a feeling for your land. A land that will keep giving. Feel blessed and enjoy it. Many of us are stuck in our bloody jobs ! Do not take the blue sky, the smell of the trees, the sound of your surroundings for granted. Enjoy all and feel blessed.

  • Your comment about gratitude is timely as this week in the U.S. we are celebrating Thanksgiving...when the settlers of this country thanked God for all the bounty they had. I thank God every day for all He has given my family and pray your family continues to have many blessings.❤

  • Whew! I am so happy the stones did not have to be uprooted until the house build, if be. They are so charming. Not that you need another chore to do, but if you want to be creative with left over grapes vines, make a grapevine wreath. That is what I did with my vines and now I will decorate them for Christmas. I also give gratitude to my garden and what it has provided for my family and me. I am grateful for the Newby's channel and your providing a positive respite for my mental health.

  • Ok. First of all how delightful to see Crusoe learning and doing and gaining understanding of what it takes to maintain a homestead. And then when Sawyer shows up with a tool in hand at about 18:20 or so and then hands a tool to his dad. My goodness. These boys are so lucky. And you are blessed to have them. Also very relieved for the “quick” fix of the water issue. Also when Sawyer took your hand as you were walking…enjoy these times. They grow up so fast. My boy is almost 22 and it’s harder and harder to get any time with him. Never mind a hug or a kiss for his mom. 😢

  • Hello the newbys, i'm renovating an old farm since 10 years. It's maybe a little bit late, but you can place a device to reduce and control the amount of pressure. What we do, in our farm is: " if you're digging, you replace for the future". Continue, you handle it!

I will not call it " therapeutic"....why should everything be therapeutic nowadays? ........it's just the good life. I am 71. O, and i walk on bare feet almost all day. It is healthy and natural. Love and Blessings until next time. Karen xx

  • Glad your beautiful stone patio didn't have to be dug up. Amazing how John was able to pinpoint the exact area of the leak and fix so quickly. Of course, could've been done without Crusoe's help. Rainy days would be difficult with two boys under three - even such cute ones. I was wondering how the porch/playroom add-on was working out? Nice ending to a fretful day with Tara working in the garden and telling us how blessed she felt.
