6:28 He's very lucky to be alive. Most people aren't aware of a phenomenon called step potential. When a high voltage line is laying on the ground, the ground around it becomes energized. The voltage present on the ground decreases the further you get from the point of contact. If you take a step within the energized area, the ground beneath your front foot will be at a different voltage than your back foot. The resulting difference in voltage can cause the electricity to travel through you. If you ever end up in a situation like this, keep your feet together and hop away. It's important to know what type of line has fallen. Transmission lines have a much higher voltage than a distribution line. Transmission lines are the ones strung up on the big tall towers. Distribution lines are the ones on top of utility poles that supply buildings and houses with power. You need to be at least 100ft from a fallen transmission line, and 30ft from a distribution line before it's safe to walk again
Although it was dangerous, I was laughing at that part.

I have to admit it’s absolutely nuts that we figured out how to manipulate one of the fundamental forces of the universe (electromagnetism) and now we send absolutely insane amounts of energy through a bunch of metal ropes over our heads, and we don’t even notice it. Until something goes wrong. Our entire modern world works because we figured out how to make electrons move. Just imagine what we could do as a species if we figure out how to manipulate the strong, weak, and gravitational force.

The cul-de-sac behind the house I grew up in, they had way too many homes on one transformer, and that thing blew nearly every time there was a big thunderstorm. I grew so familiar to this sound. Our house sat kind of uphill, and the cul-de-sac was about 15 houses in a kind of basin in the neighborhood, with more houses uphill on the other side of them. So whenever that transformer blew, whenever anything loud happened down there, including the creek overflowing its bed, it echoed so far. Such a distinctive sound.
Wow. 1:01 the snow with the blue looks unreal.

Not the best idea to be spraying water over an actively arcing transformer 3:05. Power should be isolated first. For safety.
Thankfully electricity can't traverse back down the water stream but creating pools of water is dangerous as they can become conductive. That's why you don't go near downed powerlines because the current can go through wet ground to other objects. Such as humans.

years ago the transformer that feeds our house blew up in the middle of the night, made a hell of a bang. the first repair crew brought the wrong type of replacement with them so it took an extra day to fix, ~72 hours with no power in the middle of winter is no joke so I got hold of a little generator I can rig up to an old stationary engine I have to at least keep some essentials running. of course, it hasn't happened since.

@@billthecat666 She was smart. You can throw all kinds of hoses on a fire, all day long, and they won't put it out. Deionized water is what you want for electrical fires... I don't think I saw any transformer failures in this compilation. Most transformers are oil cooled, and when they burn, they create lots of thick black smoke. 99% of the time you hear an explosion on a power line, it's because a fuse blew. If the arcing stops and starts again a few times, it's because the line has a recloser (An automatic circuit breaker).
Yeah a huge fuse or circuit break switch. Everyone still says a transformer blew. I've only seen 1 blow in my life. Goofy thing, it was by the house of a retired lineman manager. The thing blew and started burning the wire to his house.
I see in some of these other videos showing tornados striking power lines, often in the background, showing flames and sparks. If the twister strikes a power company substation, there is a powerful explosion that quickly takes place.
One thing that makes me love my kplc (Kenya power and lighting company) such incidents are very rare

There's the crackling phase, the buzzy arching phase, the buzzy explosion phase, then the only fire phase.

The second case when the power line was overloaded, the insulation burnt, the conductor illuminated due to excessive current, length expanded thermally and the catenary sagged lower and lower to affect the traffic and people below was truly dangerous.
In the US most of our power grid actually doesn't have insulation around the wires it's just bare wire
@YAKUMO RAN ah so I can learn more from youtube. Thank you.
@YAKUMO RAN yep
@@Choukai_Kai Its called covered conductor, not semi insulated. Also commonly used in European countries for new installations. They existed over 60 years ago. Even in the 1880s and 1890s some overhed lines were insulated with rubber and cloth.

A few years ago I was working on my wife's car, and just as I reconnected the battery the fuse at the end of the street blew. Loudest MF I've ever yelled.
This is a reminder that power lines could be insulated but aren't due to cost. I know it's safe usually but lines near or over homes (or connecting to homes) should definitely be insulated. EDIT: They are, I was ignorant when i made this comment

Yeah I swear I’ve been there. Looks like somewhere in Queens. Also I was like 5 or 6 when Sandy happened living on Long Island and luckily all we had was a fallen tree. Didn’t even lose power.
Electricity flows at a rate of 90% the speed of light. Or, in estimates, 167770 miles *per second*. So when you have huge amounts of it on the move and those power regulators start falling apart, things get extremely dangerous very quickly. High voltage or even lower voltages is a thing you don't mess around with, just one slight flinch too close to one and you could see your life end in a blink of an eye. This is why I very much hope the essential personnel that fixes these incidents are very well compensated.

1:45 - What a fantastic way to die. This tree trimmer was LUCKY.
There was no danger, the tree which made contact with the wire, is made of wood, which doesn't conduct electricity. If it were raining, then it would be a different story.
Most of the load bangs are the cutout fuse blowing lol
Yes!!! I get annoyed when the public calls reclosers, capacitors and voltage regulators “transformers”, but I don’t correct them. I correct them when a fuse opens and they said the “transformer blew”.
Few fuses or reclosers, but also quite a few arc overs... but definitely no transformer exploding...
