  • The following week we went to Leeds and got hammered 5-1. Frank O'Farrell went out and bought Martin Buchan from Aberdeen and a bit later Ian Storey-Moore from Forest but we ended up 8th, funnily enough, where George Best predicted we would finish. This was United's 5th defeat on the bounce and that ended in March with a 0-0 home draw to Everton. I used to go home and away back then with my mates from school. Did a paper round mornings and nights to pay for it.

  • Even though my own team, Everton struggled in this season so soon after winning the league title 69-70, players has more energy a natural skills than what we regularly see in the Premier League. These players had no warm winter breaks mid season, and often played 42 league games and cup games at two per week. Many Liverpool players from this game mentioned its significance later this season It seemed morale was a bit down after going out of the FA Cup a week earlier. And league form not its best. Travelling back from this game the team coach stopped at a Fish and Chip shop and the players and staff had a feast on the journey home. On the Monday spirits were lifted at training after getting two points at a difficult away game. Next game, Liverpool hammered a very good Man City 4-0 at Anfield, that began a winning run that clinched them the league title that season

  • Technically this is before it was called "Kick Off Match"(a weird title,by the way!)....just called "Football".....very Ronseal!! I have to say this theme tune must have struck a cord with the nation, when a choccy biscuit company called 'Burtons' uses the tune in an ad,some 8 or 9 years later! Well played,Herb Alpert!

  • Fantastic - Utd looked good to me here, even though it was during their disastrous run which took them from clear at the top at Christmas to mid-table. Newcastle were ferocious, a particularly brutal tackle on Best I thought by Barraclough (a forgotten name to me!) - red card in 2024.

    • They weren't. They were miles off the pace. Derby County and Leeds Utd fought out the title - though Liverpool had a late run, and were denied by a disallowed goal in a 0-0 draw at Arsenal in the final match of the season. Man Utd by now were in terminal decline.
