A charcoal sand water purifier is a simple and effective method of purifying water using a combination of activated charcoal and sand.
Here's how to make a charcoal sand water purifier:
Materials Needed:
Large plastic bottle
Charcoal
Clean sand
Gravel or small stones
Tissue Paper/Cotton
Clean water source to be purified

  • You can use white cotton socks and coffee filters to separate the mediums! Use MULTIPLE bottles and or PVC pipes also! Poke holes in the caps and screw a coffee filter back on the bottle! WARNING DO NOT USE FLAMMABLE STARTER CHARCOAL! Also BOIL WATER AFTER FILTERING IT!

  • While charcoal and sand are a perfect filtration system, (you have to do it more than once with new sand and activated charcoal each time) he definitely discredited himself with switching the bottles...you can see two brownish orange stains on the bottom bottle which magically disappear in the last 20 seconds of the video. Sorry dude, you get a D from this teacher...

    • The larger materials go on top to catch and filter out the larger impurities in the water. Activated charcoal has extremely tiny pores that are great for catching the microscopic particles and organisms that can harm you. You don't want all the pores of the activated charcoal to be quickly plugged up by the larger contaminants, so the charcoal goes at the bottom, to catch what remains after the other levels.

  • Are you guys joking? How can water be fake :D? I don't think its fake. It is how the store-bought filters work as well - activated charcoal. It is also anti-bacterial. Without charcoal you don't have that effect. In either cases boil the water for safety.

    • You can make a filter without charcoal, but it won't be as effective at filtering out harmful bacteria and the like. If you are making a filter without activated charcoal, don't just go filtering and drinking dirty water for fun. You should still boil it to be safe if you try this. A lot of nasty stuff lives in dirty water.
