I add some loose gravel on top at the very end. Gravel can filter out any large-scale debris, like dried leaves and twigs.

The water was dyed with blue food coloring and some oil!
Cotton clogs up the filter too fast. Use cheesecloth folded twice. Use cheese cloth as your very top layer to hold large particles and bugs . I use this filter regularly
