Transmission Seal Leaking? Replace It!
In "Taryl Meets Battery", Taryl goes over the process of replacing the parking brake seal on this Hydro Gear transmission. This one's on an Ariens zero turn mower. Before and after the fix, Taryl meets Metallica tribute band, Battery, who has played all over the world, toured with Metallica themselves and played numerous overseas shows for the American troops! Stick around til the end for an awesome music video and song made by the gang as they jam together! And as always... There's Your Dinner!!

We filmed that video probably a month ago and I was with Laurence and Phil last week and the seal is still good no leaks. Now there’s yur din din!
300 hours it will
I had the scope last week not fun lol ha ha
The same here the one I have done have not came back either
Fun fact you could of ordered oil seal kit for Chinese quad Amazon 6.95 same size seal
Hey Grass Rats!! Laurence here from BATTERY. Its was so cool to meet Taryl, Junior and Slippers and have a jam with those guys! They're all amazing musicians and really nice guys! Thanks to Taryl, Junior and Slippers for including us in their video. I was an honor. We had so much fun. We've been watching Taryl's repair vids for a few years now and we've been big fans. Now we're followers of TARYL and proud to be included in the Grass Rats family!!!! "And there's your dinner"...
Don't quicher day job😆or there'll be NO MORE dinners! jk, Rock on. ✌️❤️
Pretty cool. My 4 year old boy likes it too. You just earned yourself a new fan.
@@joewaligator4364 Thanks Joe. Tell your son "hello" from the BATTERY guys!
@@kajem575 ...And Dinner For All.... Cheers!!
Taryl, in aviation & marine applications we’ve used Loctite 1525607 Aviation Gasket Sealant on shaft & linkage seals that don’t seat snugly in the casing. In your latest situation you’d tip the machine to stop the lube from draining and apply the sealant to both the outside surface of the seal and the mating surface of the transmission case. It’s good stuff when you need to be 100% sure the seal is not going to pop out at 20,000ft or the middle of the bristol bay. Cheers!
Loved it! As a fan of Taryl (and company), Metallica, and Battery, this was a lot of fun. Those guys from Battery were naturals in your skit and I got a good laugh out of it. Perhaps you could bring them back for another skit? I bet the Bass player could throw Uncle Andy into the next county, LOL! 🤘🤘
You see here why I watch these guys. Step by step unedited. Nothing is easy
Taryl is hilarious. Has me lol'ing.
I would like to hear the cussing. Could be a few words I never learned as an apprentice.
Unless they are proprietary seals usually have an identification number on them, or they will have three two digit numbers molded into the face of the seal. The numbers indicate the ID, OD and width of the seal. Armed with that info any decent bearing house can order them individually.
Needs more cowbell!! 🤣 Love it!!
Definitely more cowbell needed
Awesome colaboration.
That new shop is NICE!
Awesome design! Make simple maintenance so labor intensive that it becomes cost prohibitive. That should speed up the replacement cycle by a factor of two or three.
Hi Taryl, thanks so much for your videos!
Thank you for sharing.👍
Great job on the seal replacement. When it comes to quality, you don't get what you don't pay for. Looks like you had a great time jamming with the guys from BATTERY. Thanks for the vid and keep up the good work. Today is Memorial Day, pause for a moment and remember those who sacrificed it all for the freedoms we enjoy today.
That’s best fern rock group I ever did see Salute to G Rat Fam
Great vid as always taryl, had a commercial bobcat come in the shop with leaking park shaft and control shaft seals, hydrogear wouldn't warranty it. Same situation the seals spun in the housing, I always put a thin coat of silicone on the outside of the seals and hammer them in. Learned that trick back in the 90's on ford escort cam shaft seals, they would spin in the head and leak. Used that trick ever since and had no issue's. Thanks for all the info you share to the world!
Awesome job taryl fixes it all
I have a copy of the Space shuttle repair Manal for you Terel. And a case of Hamms.❤❤❤ Theirs your Dinner!!!
What a great episode! Great sports Battery are too. Nice fix 👍
I would have ran a thin film of Right Stuff around the outside of the seal, and oil on the seal lip inside then install it. Let it cure for a few hours. I have very good luck doing that with vehicles cam and crank seals. Volvo's are notorious for spinning out camshaft seals. Love your videos Taryl and crew!
Cool of these guys to stop by. Also cool that they go play for the troops. It's refreshing to see people be patriotic
Absolutely one of the coolest aspects of our BATTERY gig is getting to support the US TROOPS overseas.
Paint can openers make great seal pullers. Arf arf arf!
Made my Sunday! If you buy a Feris mower, you get hydro drive oil tanks that are easy to fill and nice cartridge filters that are easy to change.
Taryl your blessed with patience for lawnmower no comensence engineering and also you most have bionic knees for has much kneeling as you do keep up the good work.
Keep up the great work 👍
That was a good repair. What I’ve done in the past on seals like that is put the black silicone on the outside of the seal before I taped it in. 👍👍👍
Crazy stuff as always Good laugh again and information Thanks 😊
Nice job. And I needed a laugh today guys.. Thanks.
Had an awesome time working with Taryl & Jr. & Slippers..... there's your dinner!!

How to fill, put machine on its side, 17:26 pour a bunch in through the axle before you replace the axle seal, turn back over level and wait till it stops dripping, then put seal back in.
I was wondering where my fill hole was.
Another goodin! Enjoyed!
❤️ that shop air!
Awesome video God Bless you and your family Amen
“Get it right, lawnmower man!” -quote of the day.
Hilarious
I bought a cub cadet zt1 50 with the kawasaki engine about 75 days ago. Cut my 3 acre lawn about 8 times maybe....and my passenger side seal like this is leaking. Unacceptable. Now i have this kit coming in the mail. It will cost me more to trailer my lawn mower to a dealer to have it fix under warranty. Ill just do it myself thanks to this video. Thumbs up from me.
This a one of the best skits! Good stuff T!
Lots of fun for us guys getting to hang with TARYL, JUNIOR and SLIPPERS
Thank you Taryl. I own a Arienes mower Ikon XD just like the one you repaired. I hope I don't ever have to change that seal, after watching your video I think this old 71 year old could get it done.
Would be a good idea to clean and RTV it now. I did think if Taryl does another one- tilt the machine up on one side=no leak with the seal out.
Awesome and I love the skits Happy Memorial Day…👍👍
On a seal like that I use a sealer like Three Bond like what motorcycle engine cases get sealed with. A coat around the outside of the seal. This eases the install and some gets pushed out along the seal to form a bead around the edge of seal and case.
What a great episode!
Lots of fun. TARYL is amazing!!!!
Uncle Taryl your the greatest
Nice video. Fun to watch. Looks like a design flaw. There should be a shield over the shaft and seal to keep the mowing debris from getting packed in there.
Great video!!! Thanks!!
Nice job!
You can get a hand pump or pneumatic stand up pump and pump all the fluid out of the transmission. Great video!
Great video I love Metallica so those guys are right up my alley heck yeah battery thanks for sharing buddy have a great memorial weekend
Thanks brother
I got a apron just like that! Gonna grill ribeyes and Mexican Street Corn for Memorial Day. Also need to head to Dayton's National Cemetery to visit six graves. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great video! Awesome project. to remove i small seal, i have carefully used a small drywall screw. love watching your videos on your channels. :)
I’ve done that !! As a carpenter that’s one thing I got plenty of👍
3:55 Transmiss-ion. It hurts from laughing. Tears running down from laughing with my son. Transmiss-ion!
Ariens used to stand behind their stuff even if it was past warranty. I've owned various Ariens snowblowers for the last 50-odd years, but I'm looking at other brands now.
Most of these companies have become the proverbial manure spreader salesmen…. They won’t stand behind it!
I've got the same mower with only 102 hrs , same seal started leaking , it was loose in the case too , JUNK JUNK JUNK !!!
I know how you feel, changed rear-ended fluid on a husky tractor and what a pain. No drain plug either, used a vacuum pump to remove oil and at least manufacturer list how much to put back in. Oh ,did this because once tractor warmed up it slowed down when driving it. Keep dem dare videos coming men.
"Battery" Has Got Plenty "AMPS"! Great video, Great Repair Taryl!
Lots of amps in the BATTERY studio...hahaha
Another good skit, it was very funny, and the brake seal was very educational, cheers from Massachusetts
We used to have a lead guitar player in BATTERY who lived in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. We spent a lot of time out there. Good times.
Great video.
Thanks brother
good to the last smash
Would love to see a video on my bad boy mz magnum on how to adjust it to drive straight with both levers pushed forward forward.
Got an MZ, old model. Check ur lever stops are even both sides. Adjust the tierods from levers to gearboxes. Usually u only need adjust 1. U should find when they are equal length they are correct. They are buggers to get at but take ur time. Adjust a liitle at a time, leave adjusters finger tight until u r sure u got it right. Test on level ground as a slight incline will make mower drift to one side. The only real trouble I have had with the MZ is dust in the various switches. Blow out with air, never use CRC or WD40 as this collects more dust. I would like to say "Theres ur dinner" but Taryl might have it copywrited hahahaha.
Guarantee Motion Industries has the seal. If I can get seals for a 1986 Husqvarna dirt bike (shock seals, wheel bearing seal, fork seals, etc) from them, they'd have that. A seal is a seal. They all spec them from the same place. I know you know to lightly drive a screw or two into the old seal to remove it.
@17:35 I think I'll get one for my toothpaste tube! 😅😂
A little tip Taryl Dog , I would put silicone around the outside of the seal . It acts as a glue to keep the seal from spinning in the bore and stops the leaking from the outside of the seal .
You mean like at 17:17?
@@TarylFixesAllbelieve he means around the O.D. of the seal before you press it into the bore.
Dollar store little paint brushes are great for spreading silicone.
@@Bagooda Yes , thats exactly what I meant . Thank you . At 11:16 it looks like he's putting earl on it ?

Words of wisdom....
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻Awesome sauce!
Cheers George!!!!
I have had similar situation with the same scenario on a different machine. I put the silicone sealer on the outer circumference of the seal , then tap into place. Maybe even drift/spike a notch or two in the aluminum housing, so the seal won't spin
Hey Taryl a mechanics dozen Hahaha. I thought that one guy was Steve Small Engine Saloon making guest appearance. He talked like him. Can’t wait for the jam session. It looks like factory couldn’t tell difference in seals and installed wrong seal to begin with. Excellent video
It seems like some seal retaining compound would have been a good idea around that seal. They make a vacuum oil extractor that allows you to suck all the oil up and out the vent cap, the same place you filled it. My cousin has to use a vacuum oil extractor on the diesel motor in his boat because you can't get under the engine to catch the oil. It works really well and fast. No mess.
Battery is here to stay!
BATTERY is found in me
"You picked a fine time to leak for me Loose Seal! With four over-grown acres of grass in the field I've had some bad times, lived through some sad times But this time your hurting won't heal You picked a fine time to leak for me Loose Seal"
Enjoyed the content! 😂 happy 2024! 14:30 There's a trans ID in view. This unit could be a Hydro gear ZC-DMBB xxxxx. These and a few other lower tier have an external parking paw/ assembly as seen in content. Im currently working on a leaky 368 hr hydro gear ZT 3100. 🍻
I have used two fine thread drywall screws to pull these. One on each side. Srew them in and it will push the seal out. Crank seals as well :)
That was awesome, but it needs more " cow bell "!!!!! 😅
That skit's a classic!
After watching all this I am so glad I bought a scag. Everything is easy to reach.
Looks like the seal may have spun with the shaft. A little silicon or permatex is always a fix for that.
Grouse work Taryl mate and i love the video work on this job well done and cheers from Australia 🐨🐑🦘🌴🌏🇦🇺 or the land down under to your area and yep a common problem but an easy fix too and the love the outro with the Rocking and Drumming song too etc. 🎤🎸🥁🤘
The BATTERY bass player, PHIL M, once lived in Melbourne, Australia before he joined BATTERY. Thanks mate.
@@laurencelangley1882 wow really ?
Yeah Phil lived in Melbourne for several years with his family. Then the family moved to Toronto Canada. A few years later he joined BATTERY and migrated to the US.
Thanks! For sure I knew Terel was a want to be long hair . Please tell me how to fix my Iu22 Ultra Sound System.
Hey Taryl order a Chicago rawhide 4940 and 4931 these seals work great I’ve done 20 plus there metal outside with epoxy sealant on them the 4940 is a little higher height in case the trans housing is worn from the seal spinning in it. Your fan Terry Gilson /Gulf Coast Power
I love cost effective parts
I appreciate this video, that’s the exact seal leaking on my exact mower. I’ve had mine for just over 2 years with 140 hours and that seal is pouring. I called the dealer and they said the hydro gears are out of warranty and then they said “sometimes we can replace seals depending on which seal and other times we will replace the entire hydro gear”. Maybe you guys have an idea on this though, my right hydro gear is the one leaking and I have topped off the fluid and bled it out. However I have a problem with my left hydro gear, when your driving straight and very slightly ease into the left handle it will start jerking really hard, it doesn’t do it when you ease into the right handle, any idea what that could be? I just ordered 2 new steering damper shocks to see if that makes a difference but if that doesn’t work idk what to do other than replace the left side hydro gear?
That output seal housing appears to be machined incorrectly for sure! A clogged vent will cause those seals to go quickly....piled up grass and debris need to be removed from the vent area after every use....great repair Taryl!
Thank you Taryl I am watching the video now❤
I wish they would still use a separate pump and wheel motor system like they used to use. I just bought a old snapper residential zero turn mower and it has a separate pump and wheel motor system with hydraulic hoses and a spin on filter.
This skit was awesome! As a musician myself, I was able to closely relate to the humor. Only other skit that rivals this one is when you hire the golden retriever (Spark Plug) to help around the shop...
The "SPARK PLUG THE DOG" video was the first video we watched by TARYL FIXES ALL. The video was how to replace a blown head gasket on a lawnmower. We watched the repair video, laughed our asses off, cranked up the Metallica tunes and changed our lawnmower head gasket. Great video!!!! TARYL is BADASS!!!! And "SPARK PLUG" was an amazing employee....
Thanks for the video. Do you have a video of a cub cadet RZT50 hydro gear transmission removal and replacement?
The plastic up grade is being released soon. My life style determines my mower style...... 🎸🎸
Hardwired!!!!
I wish I lived where you do so you could work on mine keep up the videos R
With HOP products, I sometimes had the customer call the customer 800 number and argue with the techs to get some work done under warranty. Very often when I would argue with the techs on the dealer line and I would get nowhere. But also often when a customer finally got through to the right people at Husqvarna's customer service (that requires persistence), the company would call me and say they were going to fix it under warranty. Since Ariens is now an HOP product, that is worth a try.
That was a nice shop rag. We know who the Human Shop Rag is
ELK SKINS???? Hahahaha
If you did drill a hole for the funnel, maybe the owner could take out the breather plug and shine a light in the hole to see if it needed more oil later on.
Love your videos! I have a question concerning my 2004 Ariens rear engine riding mower with a 10hp Brakes and Scrap’em engine. The manual lists the Max Governed Engaged RPM at 3100rpm. I put a tach on it and i measure 3450 rpm at full throttle. Will that cause me any engine problems? I always thought that anything under 3600 is OK? Thanks!

SHARON!!!?
I get that a lot.... Hahahaha
True Americans right there!
Cool skits! Crappy mower design. My 23 year old crappy MTD walmart "tractor" owners manual says to remove rear wheels to lubricate the axles where they enter the trans case. Thing is there's no zerks back there so wtf is that about??!! I oil them with an oil can. Only good thing about that mower is the 12.5hp B&S on it and I installed a new alternator on it after watching your channel!! WooHoooooooo!!
I replaced one last year, with a similar concern, the new seal I installed came out too, so I took it apart again and I had to peen the outer edge of the transmission to keep the seal from coming back out.
I once overfilled at a Rolling Stones concert, it'll be fine.
Did the overfill burp out through your bleeder hole?
I find a couple of self tapping screws are a good way to pull seals out using pliers. Cheers from a bass player from downunder.
FUN FACT: Phil the BATTERY bass guitarist, lived in Melbourne, Australia for several years before joining BATTERY.
