  • Great video! I remember mowing my grandparents grass, I don't know how many acres, with their '58 Wheelhorse. All those years and the blades never wore out like that, they were sharpened over and over and over. It of course wasn't a nice zero turn but nothing ever wore out or broke except drive belts. Great content!

  • Your cut height changed from the offset blades to the straight blades. I’ve got a Spartan SRT-PRO 54”, & I’ve had the same issues there as well. I’ve done some research & checked thru different blades looking for a cheaper alternative as well. I’d found an aftermarket Kubota replacement blade. But, it had a larger size bolt hole that the Spartan 5/8”. I’m a machinist by trade, so I made a simple hat spacer/bushing for that fix. As far that fuel tank, in my opinion, your gonna b replacin more of those! The neck sticks out to far, & will snag on plenty of bushes & limbs. I do understand buyin a mower on a right now basis! Ya nvr know what you’ve bought, ‘til ya use it for a bit? Best of luck to ya!!

    • It did affect the cut height. I just set the deck, measured the blade height and set the deck height adjustment where the blades would be at the appropriate cutting height. Ie...in order to cut at 2.75 inches, I have to set the height at 3.25.

I had a 72” Bad Boy that I used 2 different length of blades on, to fix its problem. The factory blade length is 24”, I used a 24-13/32” blade on the outers & a 24” blade in the center. Or, I could use the 24” blades on the outer & the 24-13/32” blade n the center, either way? But that 13/32” (.406”) closed up the gap up to fix my streaking problem.

  • If I am not mistaken, the blades on the IKON are mulching type blades. That is the reason for the different heights and angles on the blade. The one you showed for the Gravely look like just a standard cut blade that does not mulch the grass. Hence the straight blade design. I own a IKON X 52 and it also uses mulching type blades and I can find them everywhere...especially online.. Hope that helps a little...!

    @garymucher4082@garymucher40828 ай бұрын
    • Thanks for watching. The oem ariens blades are standard high lift blades. They aren't designed to mulch. The drop design isn't where the changes were made. The length of the blade and pitch of the lift edge is the difference from the 2022 Ikon 42 inch cut. Last years blade was 14 9/16 inches while the blade for the 2023, 918 model s 14.5 inches. They had to make those changes to qualify for the patent. I spoke with a gentleman just this morning that owns a Kubota with a 36 inch deck. It's blades have a patent on them too. He told me the 2 blades for his mower are $62.00 a set. This is all about money. Flat blades work just as well for less than half the price.

      @BigSouthOutdoorsTV@BigSouthOutdoorsTV8 ай бұрын

      @BigSouthOutdoorsTV@BigSouthOutdoorsTV8 ай бұрын
    • Agreed, the high lift blades width are the same as many standard blades, but because of the lift it doesn't leave much room for a cutting edge that can be sharpened more then once or twice, and high lift blades typically don't have a thick edge on the cutting edge either because of the balance of the blade thus why the edge deteriorates so quickly

      @brettraglin8939@brettraglin89398 ай бұрын
    • @brettraglin8939 thanks for watching. As I've mentioned in many responses, the cutting edge isn't the issue. If you look closely at those blades, the cutting edge is in fairly good shape. The lift edge is what discentegrates. That happens so quickly because the blades aren't hardened. It's a catch 22 situation really. In order to cut once, you need a high lift blade. On the other hand, high lift blades don't last as long as lower lift blades. That's why I chose to go with the flat oregon blades. Although they're flat and I have to compensate with the deck height adjustment to get the proper cutting height, they are hardened and last 3 times longer.

Has 12 x 12 x 26 tractor lug tires. Still use it for cutting saplings, brush and ditches when wet and the steep banks around my shop and pulling the Gravely out when it gets stuck. Its blades are .200 thick spring leaf material. Two issues with the Gravely. Brake cable broke and it did not come with Donaldson air filter. Has one now.

They work great but do offset the cutting height. Simple fix for that though. I just set the deck at 3 inches and measured the actual height if the blade cutting height. 3 inches is actually 2.25 inches. So, if I want to cut at 3 inches, I have to set the deck at 3.75 inches.

At that time, I had a friend that owned one tell me that if I ever bought one, I'd never have anything else. He was right. It's not about the engine or transmissions. Every commercial brand uses either Kohler or Kawasaki. It's the build quality. The frames, front casters, decks etc...that to me, set them apart. Watch my 1,200 hour review on my Gravely 452. There's little or no chance of me clipping that gas cap in any way shape or form. I'm retired and only cut my own five or so acres, but I have cut grass commercially part time when I was a working man. So I had the experience when I went mower shopping to know what to look for in a mower. Your haste cost you. My first deck after I retired was an Ariens. It lasted a few years. Not bad, but not great, either. So, if you're going to cut a lot of grass, there are Bobcats, Scags, Exmarks,, and even Husqevarna mowers that'll outperform an Ariens and last longer doing it,. The cheap blades that came with your Ariens is an instant tip off. Of course, you probably already know all this. Ariens is basically a homeboy mower. I think there are 42" commercial mowers available, but you should be able to get a lot of use out of your Ariens. Just buy your commercial grade Dixie Chopper blades and you'll be fine, as you already know. Good luck with your business. A landscaper's life ain't easy, but it sure can be satisfying in a lot of different ways. I still think of cutting grass as a sort of relaxation time to meditate (just don't meditate too much!). Cheers.

    • Thanks for watching. This is my first Ariens but my second gravely. My first Gravely lasted 12 years and had over 6,000 hours on it when I sold it. That was three years ago and the guy I sold it to is running it to this day. Last I talked to him he said it clicked over 9,000 hours. With all due respect, I don't think any of those other brands could top that. I agree with you about Ariens, but Gravely is on a whole different level from Husqvarna, Dixie Chopper, and especially exmark. The 452 you saw in the background in this video has 1,192 hours on it and it still has the original battery. I appreciate your comment and I appreciate you watching.

  • Well, all in all, I'd 100% agree with you being pissed! It's bad enough forcing their customers to use proprietory blades, but if they can't even make a GOOD quality blade it's adding insult to injury! I can understand why they're designed like that, and there're good reasons for it, but the way they're going about it will just alienate potential buyers and certainly those who've already made the purchase of the machine! Sure, one can fabricate spacers, and use longer HT bolts, to use the blades one prefers - but one SHOULDN'T need to have to resort to that to get blades that are up to the job. That fuel tank design is one of the most asinine designs I've seen in a looong time - it's bad enough that it's sticking out in the breeze waiting to be broken off, but it means the whole tank needs to be replaced instead of just a neck. So, you have some excellent points there, but while it says "Made in the USA", that means assembled*, as the rest of the label clearly states it uses parts from other countries, too. It may be mostly US sourced parts, though, to be fair. *Other terms that may be misleading are "assembled", "packed", etc. Not sure about the current state of affairs, but for many years Honda and Toyota had more US sourced content than any of the "Big Three", on their cars made on the US assembly lines, because they used their own US factories for their parts. Oh, forgot, you may find this amusing - way back in the sixties, you could buy cheap plastic toys marked "Made in USA" - there was a Japanese manufacturing town that renamed itself "USA", so it was technically correct.

    • @@BigSouthOutdoorsTV I think we've all made a decision, or purchase, we regret later. I call them BAD decisions - Best Available Data - it was the best call we could make on what we knew at the time. Along the same lines, I call 'mistakes' "learning experiences" - the initial mistake is annoying, but if one can learn something from it, it can be some recompense. It's when I repeat the SAME 'learning experience' the real problem lies. As it is, you should be able to have some spacers machined to place the cutting edges at the correct depth, and that will also allow you to have the pilot machined to the correct diameter for your favourite blades' mounting bore. That fuel tank, though - NO POSSIBLE EXCUSE for that FUBAR design that should never have reached the drawing board/screen, let alone production.

After mowing the field, the lift edge was gone, and the cutting edge severely rounded. Now when I mow that field, I use an old set of blades, and just throw them away afterwards. I used to have a 2005 craftsman z6400. Other than the stamped deck, it was built much "heavier" than this mower. I maintain 6-7 acres a day. When you cut the volume of grass I do, you HAVE to keep your blades sharp. I change blades every week.

  • All alloys and heat treatment are not equal and weight alone probably is not a good judge. Adding heavier blades may not fit the engineering of the drive components. The Ariens blades may be better suited for well maintained lawns. The turbulence caused by the lift in those blades would be a blade tip erosion problem where there is a lot of loose dirt and grit. But the lift would likely give you a better manicured appearance to the lawn. The moral of the story is that the blade needs to be tailored to the stuff you are mowing and the appearance that your customer is looking for. So you need to load up the right equipment for the jobs you have scheduled. Personally I would keep the Ariens for manicured lawns for a nicer cut and the prevention of weed contamination. Set up your trailer to make quick blade changes, sharpening and deck cleaning.

    • Thank you for watching. That is good information but, from experience, the Oregon blades cut far better. This has nothing to do with wear, stress or anything of the sort. This mower has the same spindles my Gravely 452 has and the same clutch. Only difference is the engine size. My first Gravely has a 23 hp Kawasaki engine with a 52 inch cut. 21.5 hp is MORE THAN ENOUGH for 42 inch cut. This is all about money. That's why they put a patent on those blades. They litterally blocked the aftermarket from being able to reproduce that blades design and sell them cheaper. The Oregon blades are $38.00 a set(3). The oem blades are $27.85 each. $27.85 × 3 equals more than double what aftermarket blades cost, $83.55 for 3 blades. FOLLOW THE MONEY.

  • Hey I have an older Ariens Ikon-X, model 915220. It's a 42" cut also and I have the same problem with the blades having the drop in between the attachment nut and the cutting edge. I think mine is even larger than yours, the drop that is! I needed a mower that didn't have the roll bar cuz I have accounts in a mobile home park, many of them have awnings and I had to get something as close to a commercial machine as possible. Back when I was looking, I never thought to look at the shape of the blades, still it was the best built mower for the price and my needs but still the shape of the blades is the worst thing about it! It's still hard to get blades for it, the aftermarket companies don't make blades in such an odd shape, I guess there's not enough buyers for them to make those blades. You got me thinking, I'm going to check and see how much of a difference in height straight blades will make inside the deck, I'm thinking about the deck scraping and digging into the ground if I put straight blades on it. Still you got me thinking and I'm gonna look into this and see if I can find straight blades that will fit mine, buy a set and see how they'll work, the deck is deep so that's not going to be a problem I just don't want to dig up peoples yards cuz I have to set the deck so low to get the right height cut on the grass. Still if they will work this should lower the cost of blades for me cuz the original blades are high priced!

  • I love you man!!! I operate a Yazoo 61" Master Mower retired from Chicago Park District that is wildly over designed from 1998. Twin cylinder TJD wisconsin engine (yes I had to rebuild it once). The trans is a Rockford that upon rebuild (one time) resulted in clutch plates that wore less than 0.001". I'm a retired engineer & machinist, and that machine is built like a tank. My blades are offset, and are close to 1/2" thick. I sharpen every 2 years. Of course, its only cutting 5 acres per week, but I shave the earth every other week .... cutting at the street. I had to rebuild the deck once ... I had my mower parked outside for years. Upon rebuild, I made it bullet proof. My blades are keyed to the spindle. I think the original designer was a genius. I made it better. It's noisy, so I added another muffler so it looks like a "chopper". Yes, I'm crazy but I need quiet so I can listen to music while I cut. I'm not ready for something new while I operate the oldest lawn mower in my county. I love your channel, keep posting.

    • Thank you for watching. My dad always said if it ain't broke....and we all know the rest of that statement. Engineers aren't happy until they complicate something. If they had left well enough ALONE, the fill cap would've gotten damaged. On previous year models, it was located on the same side but on TOP of the fender behind the seat. Whatsworse, the dealer I purchased it from told me it was not covered under warranty. The dealer I'm trading with now, told me it most certainly was covered by the warranty. THAT, to me at least is a MUCH BIGGER problem and one if the many reasons I no longer trade with them.

  • Brian, a while back we chatted about your blade(s) issue on your Ariens zero turn. I have been trying to remember early on in my operating of my Ariens Zoom 50 and remembered mowing at near ground zero, decided to raise it up to 3.5 in for better lasting blades. All we have here is sand and they get blasted. At the low setting I used to use, I would only get one cutting on our 1.5ac, but by raising the blade to 3.5in, I was able to get 3 cuttings before sharpening or tossing. Also at the low blade setting I remembered having more problems with dirt flying out from under the mower as well.

    @richpowell5344@richpowell5344Ай бұрын
    • Thanks for watching. You are exactly right. Cutting at too low a setting is hard on everything on the machine. If that weren't enough, we stopped cutting lower than 3" several years ago. We cut most properties at 3.25-3.50". These blades are NOT hardened. That's why they don't last. Bottom line, they are complete junk.

    • I responded to your other comment. I find myself have to clarify myself to a lot of people that don't seem to understand that I knew it was a residential machine. I bought this machine because of that very fact. As I stared in my.other comment, I had been running a Craftsman Z6400. It was made by MTD. When I bought it, it was used and had 149 hours on it. When I sold it, it had over 600 hours on it, and the man that bought it is still using it. That is why I felt comfortable buying this Ariens. I was told by the dealer that it was a superior machine to the craftsman in every way. IT'S NOT! It's a P.O.S. I have spent a lot of money just keeping it going. As I stated, had the dealer told me, "you need something heavier and more commercial", I would've listened. They told me it would be a much better machine than what I had. THEY WERE WRONG.

  • To put that label on product, "Made in America from Globally Sourced Parts". means a small %age of parts based upon value came from almost any country - China, Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, Mexico, Canada, etc. In California, the %age is 5% unless the parts are not available in the USA, then it's 10%. But given that, the label is a lot better than "Made in China". Even well known American brands (Ford, Chevy, etc) are assembled in foreign countries. Jobs gone.

In this NC heat, if it's cut much lower, it will cook it. When I sharpen blades I usually use the blade close to the center, the most unused portion of the cutting edge as a guide to get the 30° angle. I've thought about getting an all American blade sharpening system just haven't pulled the trigger on that yet.

    • Thanks for watching. With all due respct to you, and I want to reinterate, this is nothing personal, if you've only used 2 sets of blades in 20 years, you're either not using it much, not cutting a lot of acreage or you're abusing it. Even a full residential mower should have new blades at the first hint of lawn growth in spring. Not doing so puts unnecessary stress on the belts, spindles, bearings and if it's an electric pto, it overheats and shortens the clutch's life. When blades get that dull, you're no longer cutting grass, you're beating it to death.

  • Stack some 1/4" thick washers and longer bolts to lower the new blades. It will cut much better then. Right now the blades are too high inside the deck and air flow is restricted.

    @greeneracre1151@greeneracre11518 ай бұрын
    • Good suggestion. There are no bolts. The spindles have threaded ends and 15/16 nuts holding the blade on. There are not enough threads on the bottom of the spindle where the blade goes to put a washer on it along with the blade. The threads are only about 1/4" long after installing the blade. If I put any type of spacer/washer in between the bottom of the spindle and the blade, there is not enough threads left to properly hold the blade securely. Last thing I need is for a blade spinning at a high rate of speed coming out from underneath the deck and hurting someone or causing property damage.

      @BigSouthOutdoorsTV@BigSouthOutdoorsTV8 ай бұрын
    • @@BigSouthOutdoorsTV It is obviously a design idea to force people to buy the 'drop cutting edge' blades. If spindles were threaded internally you could easily fit longer bolts and spacers. Maybe when the threads are too damaged and you have to get new spindles you can use conventional mower parts with internal thread? While typing this I had an idea. Check Mcmaster Carr and see if they have any special extension nuts with a 5/8" thread, (internal thread one end and external thread the other) that would kill two birds with one stone, drop blades plus if threads do wear they will be replaceable. I have made them in special sizes ( 14x1mm metric to 3/8"), you may find a hobby machinist local who can do it quite easily and reasonably cheap

Then park the mower with its forewardmost wheels stopped right at the rear edge of the trailer deck with the deck raised. Laying on the ramp, using a piece of plywood or cardboard, we always had plenty of room to change the cutting edges. It's great for when the ground's wet and also makes it a little easier to get up after! Your blades are all junk. We used our blades about 6 hours a day. They were sharpened once a week and changed twice a season only.
