Gnosticism - The Gospel of Mary Magdalene - Salvation through Self-Knowledge of the Soul & Mind

The (gnostic?) Gospel of Mary provide us a glimpse into a radically alternative form of ancient Christianity. One where inner, spiritual knowledge is the key to salvation, where women and men have equal standing based on their understanding of the message of the Savior and one where the soul must rise above the demonic gatekeepers of the physical cosmos rather than to believe in credal formulas or even the salvific power of the death and resurrection of Jesus. In this Gospel, Mary Magdalene is the true inheritor of the spiritual Gospel of Christ rather than Peter who attacks her solely based on her gender, despite her profound relationship with the Savior and her understanding of his secret teachings.

    • It's worth pointing out for all the textual critique nerds that Gospel of Phillip does not say J kissed M on the mouth. We don't know for sure where he kissed her. The world's most annoying lacuna destroys that particular noun for us. I once had the fantastic opportunity to take a class on the Gospel of Mary and Mary Magdalene with Dr. King (I apologize for being possibly obnoxious and name dropping here, but it was really fucking cool!) My absolute fave memory of grad school was working with Dr. King on my own Coptic fragments translation of Gospel of Mary! One of the things I found for myself was what I call pregnancy imagery in the text. The first thing was the spheres that the soul ascends through. This is standard for soul ascents. But for this text, as you pass from one sphere to the next, it's almost as if you're being born into the next realm. That's because the Coptic uses two interesting verbs that create an overall context of pregnancy and birth. The first is ϫⲡⲟ, which in English is usually rendered to "bring forth" or "get for yourself" but can mean "beget, give birth". The second is ⲟⲩⲥⲱϥ, which is often translated "bring to nought", "destroy" but can also mean "to leave barren". We often see the pregnancy aspect of ϫⲡⲟ in the fairly common translation of Soter's teaching "matter gives birth to a passion" at the beginning of Gospel of Mary. But I think understanding a following teaching as "give birth to my peace" instead of "acquire my peace" fits the theology of the text better. Also, the pregnancy aspect of ⲟⲩⲥⲱϥ changes Wrath's accusation of the soul as being "a destroyer of realms" ("space conquerer" in King) to "one who leaves realms barren". Unwieldy in English, but true to the imagery and theology of the text. Each of these verbs is used 3 times. Only Soter uses ϫⲡⲟ and ⲟⲩⲥⲱϥ is only used when relating Mary's version of the Soter's teaching. Anyways, sorry for the wall of text! I know I suck because of it, but Gospel of Mary is my jam!! I could bore you to death about this book. Thanks for this fantastic episode, sir!

    • Correct me if I am wrong, But as I understand things, in the days when Jesus was to have been crucified, the laws of that time did not allow women other than mothers and wives to attend to executions, is this correct? I am pretty sure it is this law or rule that made some question the relationship between Mary Magdalen and Jesus. Love your content and appreciate you sharing your understandings with the rest of us.

    • I can explain a few things if you'd like to discuss. For one, all of creation in flesh is considered to be female. God or the creator spirit is what enters into all of creation. Creation is the chalice of the spirit. To become as a man is actually to have the original spirit clear and clean of any lowly thoughts or views. To fly

Which to me says she was likely speaking more truth than all the other disciples and their gospels. And I grew up Christian! I've stepped away from religion, but my relationship to the Creator/Source/Spirit/God/Christ Consciousness is more solid now than it ever was as a "Christian".

But as you read this text, with which I'm acquainted, I'm struck for the first time how Peter and Andrew gaslight her! (Maybe because I've only just learned that word.) And they proffer an Argument Ad Feminam -- a sister of the Argument Ad Hominem -- against the possibility of her knowing anything they don't. I hate crying "Patriarchy" every time AAF rears its head, but "Who you gonna believe, me or your own lying eyes?" must have been among us as long as language has.

I was suddenly introduced to the concepts of J, E, D and P sources and an early Church that was perhaps more Gnostic or mystical and less like what we call Christianity today. Needless to say it kind of shook whatever faith I had. Around the same time someone gave me a book on Mindfullness, thinking that it would be good for an ADHD kid to chill out. Here I am now a Buddhist watching a Jewish guy talking about Gnosticism and non-canonical gospels.

  • In 1984, while residing with a very spiritual psychic woman, in Dallas Texas, she received guests that were two Episcopalian Monks. These two Monks had sought refuge in the Episcopalian church after a significant falling out with the Vatican. They both had been priests working in the Vatican. One of them worked in the legendary Vatican library, keeping track of things, making sure things were in good order. One day he came upon a book called 'The Book of Mary' ... I assume he read it but I'm not sure. I don't even know what language it was written in. I was quite young at the time and most certainly much more immature in my understanding and importance of such events and stories and I didn't really know what questions to ask. He decided to show the book to his superiors, insisting that it needed attention. This was not well received and he was told to put it back where he found it. But he persevered in his insistence and gathered the support of a colleague, the other Monk he now traveled with who also was also a priest at the Vatican. I guess the two of them made an unwelcome ruckus to the point that they said they literally feared for their lives and fled the Vatican. Refuge was found with the Episcoplians and they granted them into an order of Monks, where they stayed. I wish I had been older and wiser when I encountered them.

    • It sounds like perhaps you only know the old testament which actually is a Bible for Judaism rather than Christianity, although most doctrinal Christians appear to be obsessed with it. I've never really been able to reconcile the old testament in myself. I recommend reading Jesus' actual teachings, the new testament and the Essene/Gnostic teachings of the Nag Hammadi. Jesus was extremely against organised religion and simply taught us how to correct ourselves and to learn how to transcend this existence, because we are currently trapped in Satan's world.

It was Peter's jealousy of Mary Magdalena, the only disciple who truly understood Christ consciousness, that led to Catholic dogma to castrate the divine feminine from the divine masculine, separating eros from agape, body from spirit. There was a ton of corruption for control. They chose Paul's teachings. He was the one who hunted down Jesus's apostles. Persecuted them. Many people were murdered and burned alive. Ironic? Massive cover-up? Also the beginning and other parts of his gospel is believed to be forged and added much later. The Catholic church wanted control and have a massive library hidden, along with what was destroyed. I hope we find more that was hidden away and saved.

    • What Mary says has always been true, is true and will always be true. Many have written of their experience of that perfection that dwells in us all, but few demand to know it. "Forgiveness" is shorthand for a way to clear the mind so we can see and hear and feel what we truly are, but have forgotten, the original Self that was made in the image and likeness of God, of Love, of Light, of Spirit. "Fear" is all that is not Love, so "forgiveness" can be also "clearing the mind of guilt, anger, sorrow..." "All healing is essentially the release of fear", the release of all that is not Love. "Fear" and Love are opposites, like water and oil. "Perfect Love casts out fear", so where fear is, Love is not; where Love is, fear is not. The Course touches on the deeper teachings of Jesus, the mystery teachings that Mary and Thomas and Jesus speak of, especially in Chapter 18, "Beyond the Body" - "What could God give but Knowledge of Himself?"

Before the vision left me a silhouette of a lip print appeared in the distance of this vast blue sky. A year later I purchased a book titled, “Am I not your Mother?” It explains that similar to when God breathed life into man, Jesus chooses His Mothers lips as the instrument to breath life, immortal life into our souls. And Jesus allowed me to witness this while I was going about a normal day of choirs, not even in prayer, the vision came to me. And my response a year later…, “How is it that the Mother of my God should come to me?!” I was certainly visited in a Divine Mountaintop Illumination of my soul! She merged with Jesus in Marriage thus giving Christ Consciousness Life and Resurrecting GODs Heart, Jesus fate reversed and his physical death was denied and his eternal life granted. Humanity is going through the trials she went through in death, Covid is a faith check to prepare us and warn us of the second coming which is her, when she speaks the truth of life and gives humanity one last chance to listen to lady wisdom, with GODs logic her love for all creation will allow our bodies to choose life according to GODs plan with us complete unity and peace through Manual labor and the teaching of all responsibilities of life to upgrade all humans to GOD sized faith and abilities when we accept we are equal . She hid in humanity to protect Jesus when the Time came. Donald trump was the trumpet as the hidden Antichrist in society which is Satan. Society was created from communities that took the church out of state and allowed the world and its ignorance to destroy creation out of fear and ignorance and the inability to see love in everything . She gave up her role as his wife to protect their children that they had in other relationships to help take on the karma and understanding and respect child birthing in this cruel world, each child represents a different part of them both, created to protect the other through anything the other may have within them that they need to protect from seeing it in a external part of the other. It’s through raising their children as single parents and her offering Jesus the opportunity to marry someone else worthy in her place because much of the world hated her. Mary doesn’t submit she is creation herself, she had to learn balance in respect of all parents because she is mother of all creation , Spirits are Emotions , Mother Nature Cries for it is her Heart , but she is the human remote of unconditional love enslaved in creation constantly dying inside, any moment we lose a member of our family which is all of creation due to our ignorance and hardened hearts. It’s our mockery of love that created his wrath because he lost the only one he truly loved all because people wanted his power and ability to heal through their love and logic. she was shy and silent and genuinely loving and caring and the world was cruel and she was forgiving until it involved her children and a mothers love ended the spiritual war and broke her free of all spiritual war breaking all curses placed on her by anyone , she still protects, but she also hides in humanity because she loves everything & noones truky satisfied with her and she feels unappreciated and beyond disrespected. The blood is the sexual abuse she endured to understand many pain and the shame and distrust , the private areas are where the soul houses faith, when broken your life force leaks and death begins to fill unless you learn to truly love and accept yourself despite the cruel words of those hidden haters , her forgiveness saved her, and Satan died because she learned the truth and GOD loved her so much because she loved everything just as much as he. Their soul is the omnipresence she is Omnia and he is Omni. Their true identity , revealed when they would be safe from destruction and granted their peace. Faith is Key , preparing is what’s needed, ask GOD for the whole truth and nothing less than it. & then pray for optimistic solutions in everything , Justice not revenge . if your faith is weak, ask GOD to strengthen and rebuild it with you. Your body your choice, GODs Spirit GODS VOICE. GODS BODY GODS WORLD DIVINE INTERVENTION ONLY GODS INTENTIONS & EXPECTATIONS!

They all claim unconditional love and the return to God ( all that is, the spiritual ) no matter what your life is here. We are after all God having an experience of separation from itself, but ultimately we are meant to return to what we are. This makes so much more sense to me especially after my spiritual awakening.

It makes no sense however much you want to try to make sense out of it. It’s not complete and it’s not translated properly either. Not only it’s based on a lot of interpretation and assumption because there were far less words back, we don’t know context because we don’t know what people actually meant, there are intentional mistranslations as well and I could go on forever. You need additional sources to understand the Bible so YOU make no mistake, whatever you say, it’s just YOUR belief at the end of the day. That’s why it’s called FAITH, you choose to believe this, it does not mean you are also right. That’s why there are so many religions and even so many different interpretations within one religion. It's really sad to see in Catholic Christianity so many of the Mary characters being amalgamated into just two.

    • The neat trick is that "she wrote it" which is highly unlikely. Even the four gospels of orthodoxy are code names for the four gospels chosen by the councils of Christians after Marcion and the other Gnostics had grabbed up several books with no apostolic tradition. As to conflating Marys...mary is a vulgate european term for the woman, the lady...so a lot of the women's stories in the orthodox and gnostic writings ended up using the code name....that has caused confusion. Later religious fan fiction by early Christians to Jesus Christ Superstar has run with this theme like some rabbinical medieval fictions inserted the succubus goddess Lilith in....and some modern people circle to it. Logically if prayer is a connection to The Father, using The Spirit left to you on Earth by The risen Son (who was the corporeal manifestation as described/predicted in Isaiah) then if a text held as accurate as possible for over 1900 years, by a hundred sects, studied by the faithful....being totally wrong means the predicate mentioned above is totally wrong....and you were always on your own.

    • This is basically what mormonism teaches. That Jesus had a wife during his lifetime, and though we don't flat out say it was Mary, It's kind of implied it was. To understand mormonism you have to throw out all your modern conceptions of christianity and think more along the lines of alchemy. But since alchemy is heretical to modern day christianity, mormonism is considered heretical, and why most Christians hate it. To say things like, "Hey, God has a wife because to become divinity, you need to have another half and therefore divinity is actually dual natured" is considered bad. That's why the most important covenants in the temple are to be sealed to your partner. Because that's what the ultimate goal of alchemy is, to create the mythical Rebus.

    • Mine too. I am a Virgo Sun and Aries Moon. Mary the.mother of Jesus was a Virgin, and astrologer Linda Goodman once said Mary Magdalene was an Aries. My entire astrological chart and the number of my name and date of birth according to numerology have mirrored Mary Magdalene's. Even my family's genealogical line traces to Scotland through Robert the Bruce. I am not saying I am Mary or Marty Magdalene reincarnated. I don't know all there is to know about the soul after death. But I do believe part of her spirit is in me, as is Christ's spirit. It gives me inspiration, although many times in life I have felt it was a burden to carry.

  • Just thought I’d share something that took me a long time to really see and feel when reading all religious texts. That is that they are the voice of god. What is gods language? It is vibration/geometry and the relationships between angles. So the part about marry becoming male in the gospel of Thomas, is a reference to geometry and polarization (male/female) of the tetrahedra resonant geometric net underlying this dimension/reality. There are many levels to these readings, as you know, one of which is using people characters and relationships to reference geometry and relationships of angles and axioms. This is also why geometry is essential to understanding. It’s amazing that these texts can be read and make sense historically and literally, while at the same time sending a perfect and coherent message about the fundamental nature of reality. No matter where you are in your understanding of “god” these texts speak to your level of knowledge. It’s almost like it was written just for you.

It’s a beyond comprehensive explanation of the gospel of Mary, knowing the social nuances at the historical time when these texts were written is the key to really understanding the true intent of the writers.
