Yeah, finally bee season has finally arrived.
Yeah. Little too early for my schedule...
bees bees bees I am so excited bee season is here I got my NUC and it is installed and doing great ii have also caught 2 swarms so far and hoping for more every one is establishing in the hives which is great news lots of pollen pockets going in the hives please keep the videos going .
Sounds like your doing great! Congratulations!
@@KobeApiaries thank you very much :)
So I didn't catch it, what are you gonna do with the top deep on the 3 stack? Use it to make splits with? My daughter is kinda in the same boat, she has 4 double deep hives and they're packed. She has some deadouts we thought about adding another deep deadout to the doubles to give them more room.
Looking really good!
Thanks Brad! Good luck this season!
You are the man Matt!
Thanks Jon! Good luck this season!
And he's dreamy.
Very impressive, Kobe. Especially how you didn’t need to feed all winter.
Thanks David! Good luck this season!
I like your videos man keep it up
Thank you! We appreciate the kind words!
Very nice. good luck.
Thanks! You as well!
Awesome looking hives. Good luck this season.
Thank you! We appreciate the kind words! Good luck to you as well!
You could reduce your first Nuc to a single super. 2 supers would be difficult to keep the brood warm with such few. Good luck there!
Thank you so much for doing this video! It's very helpful for me, since this is my first spring with overwintered bees. Exciting, but I was sure what I was supposed to do or what to look for. I am doing my first inspection tomorrow and now I know what to look for and what to do with whatever I see.
We are glad that it helps! Congratulations on overwintering for the first time! Good luck this year!
Good looking hives ! You are going to have your hands full when your weather breaks. Which is a great thing splits splits splits ! Good luck I gave you a subscribe
Thank you! I see you are in Maryland. How are the bees looking over there? We have heard that the east coast has really been getting hit with some rain.
Brooklyn NY. We are like a month a head of you. I have charged cells already..
Wow! Good luck with your splits!
*Bees are looking good. They are about to explode :)*
Yeah. We need to get our ducks in a row pretty quickly here. I am assuming you guys have already split in Kentucky?
@@KobeApiaries Yup, been warm down here boxes are full. Flow coming in slowly, but it will hit hard next week i bet. I was able to do splits a couple of weeks back.
Those came out nice and heavy congrats mine were all hungry.. our goldenrod was disaster had ten thousand of dragon flys eating everything like size of birds .. even the yard I gave 3 horse troughs of syrup was light.. think I'm getting taken over by mites .. I was grafting and scooped up mite was under that tiny larva with it .. I'm taking that as sign .. I normally drop apivar early so they could very well be bad .. I'll have to take closer look maybe it was just weird thing .. I wanted them to build up see if anything is controlling mites before I drop the hammer.
Yikes! Hopefully, it was just a weird coincidence! If you do an alcohol wash and can confirm you have mites on bees, you could do a Harbo assay and test for resistance before you start your treatment. It is possible to have phoretic mites, but also high VSH bees that keep them from reproducing under the brood.
@@KobeApiaries there's F1 harbo right between the two. I couldn't find mites in the harbo unit. other two units need treatment right away.. got digging around in the brood today. Think I'll try those apitablet seems to work pretty good.. lay off the amatraz until Aug
Glad to hear the Harbo's are living up to the hype! Ours are looking great as well!
Please don't @@hootervillehoneybees8664
the Apiary is looking good! with the Drones walking around I think it's time to split this weekend for me here in Howell.
It's definitely getting close! We are going to try to hold off for a couple more weeks so we know we have a strong drone population to get all of our new queens mated with as much genetic diversity as possible.
Kobe where did you get that foil top or inner cover. Your bees look great. Thanks for sharing.
It's called "bubble foil insulation." We bought the Reflectix brand (we haven't tried any others so we don't know if it is the best or if there are better options out there). You can buy it from any of the home improvement stores like Home Depot, Lowes, Mendards, etc.
You may be able to get that foil for free from florists In our area they get flowers wrapped in it when their shipments come in
Thanks for the tip! We like free!
Good video but on your moisture you were talking about you are correct an you are wrong. Yes by the video looking inside the hive you can see the moisture is running across an running down the front or back wall . In the winter I tilt all my colonies more than normal just for the moisture so they can have it to use (drink ) an it runs down the front wall on my colonies. BUT if the box is level front to back an side to side an the moisture sets there an rains down on the colony it will kill the bees . Maybe this will let people know that water can be useful or bad for the bees if it is done properly. Thanks
Yes. You are correct. Hence why we have our lids insulated and all of our colonies leaning forward as we describe in our wintering video: kzhead.info/sun/hLKyntV_aaSJrKs/bejne.htmlsi=v-0OoK3gTfJv1_PZ The point is, you do not need to vent the moisture out of your colonies. In fact, the bees benefit from NOT venting. Thanks for the tip.
18:45 wasnt one of the hives already making queen cells. why not give them a frame to raise? I think it was the cory hive that started on queen cells
The Cory Stevens colony in the video had several queen cups, but no charged cells. We checked them this previous weekend (one week later) and they had some charged queen cells. So we moved the queen and will use this colony as a cell builder. The colony should make some beautiful cells!
@@KobeApiaries That makes sense. Thank you for answering my question.
Absolutely! Anything we can do to help! Thanks for watching!
What kind of queens are those gold ones?
This queen is an F1 from our VSH breeder queen from Dr. John Harbo. Dr. Harbo doesn't claim any specific subspecies of bee as he is only focused selecting for resistance. So, she would be a mutt or hybrid.
How is your varoa treatment.
We would like to think that our IPM is pretty top notch. We use OAV during broodless periods (requeening, splits, etc), Apivar in the fall after we take our honey off, and OAV in the winter. This year we may use Apiguard instead of Apivar as the incidence of Amitraz resistant mites continues to rise. Most importantly, we have brought in resistant stock from Dr. John Harbo, Cory Stevens, and POL Line. We hope to be able to continue to select for mite resistant bees to help reduce the dependency on miticides.
Can i ask why you didnt add 2 inches of pink foam on top of the 5 frame nucs rather than just the refectix?
They all had reflectix and 2 inches of pink foam.
Oh, sorry I didn't notice it over the 5 frame nucs
@@chrismcculloch2563 No need to apologize! We had probably removed it before we hit record, but it was on there. Good attention to detail!
I followed your advice on insulation and came through the canadian winter with great success, I appreciate the videos.
That's fantastic! Congratulations! Thank you for sharing. It's always nice to hear that we are having a positive impact and helping people.
Michigan?
Yes. We have apiaries in Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Ada, and Howell.
That's bad
