Faught to a draw evenly matched the second fight and Ali got the decision because he was the Chapion. Then the third and last fight both men faught so hard they were both hospitalized for several days. Only to learn later that Joe Fraizier basically was fighting blind in that third and final fight

    • Another champion who had that quality was, believe it or not, Roberto Duran. When Duran saw his opponents falling, he always walked away. Other champions like the young George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Rocky Marciano and Deontay Wilder were terrible, getting in last licks on hurt and falling opponents. That lack of poise separate them from the Greatest and Hands of Stone.

In Tyson's first few years one would think that all he knew was eat bananas and kill and I'm not being racist when I say this because Tyson was a fucking maniac sliver back. Now we see footage of him knocking people out and talk like a well educated man at age 20-21. Very wise man. He didn't need a promoter. When you're that wise at such age in his profession, you're a dangerous man. When you see Tyson in a gymnasium and you're the opponent and pass that threshold , it had to feel like you just stepped into a phone booth.

      @skepchica@skepchica Жыл бұрын
    • Not great force, but the power of cumulative damage. That was an underestimated element of Ali's thematic strategy. Ali knew that the big punch was only one path to victory, and not the surest. Better was to keep his opponent off balance and just a little impaired from a relentless diet of jabs, so he wasn't really at his best, but didn't really feel it until he got himself into a hopeless condition and stumbled, staggered and reeled around the ring and began to lose his balance, coordination and senses.

      @ismailabdelirada9073@ismailabdelirada9073 Жыл бұрын
    • It was George's fight to lose, not Ali's to win. George got emotionally invested from the off & simply punched himself out hitting arms & gloves. He didn't pace himself at all & was completely exhausted by the end, where his punches had no power at all. He pretty much fell over from exhaustion.

      @hiyadroogs@hiyadroogs Жыл бұрын
    • @@hiyadroogs: It wasn't *just* exhaustion, although that was a factor. One thing that doesn't seem to come naturally is calculating cumulative effects; this is why people smoke, drink, eat junk and remain sedentary for so long before health concerns force them to change. You're right to say Ali wasn't known as a hard puncher, but after five or six rounds of eating his jabs, you see opponents (e.g., Cleveland Williams) wobbling just a bit, and then he lands a sharp jab to the temple, and the opponent almost collapses. This doesn't mean he suddenly walloped his adversary a la Earnie Shavers. It's just the sheer volume of small blows, which eventually become too much. Each individual blow is of no great impact, but collectively they are destructive. (This theme appears across a vast range of choices and actions. For example, smoking one cigarette, eating one Big Mac, or spending one day sitting in front of the television will likely do no harm, but if these choices become habitual, you will ultimately sicken and die.)

      @ismailabdelirada9073@ismailabdelirada9073 Жыл бұрын
    • @ismailabdelirada9073 That accessment of Ali's style is correct those sharp snappy jabs add up over the duration of a fight, but these shots in particular are very hard shots to the temple. If you've ever taken one, you understand your circut board just doesnt work for 5- 10 seconds, which is lethal for a boxer-- but make no mistake, these were HARD shots. Ali knew he couldn't afford to let him get up. But the fact he wasn't asleep speaks to strength of the only God knows what material Foreman was constructed from.

      @skepchica@skepchica Жыл бұрын
  • Foreman has such humility for such a powerful ex champ He tells it like it is and accepts his shortcomings with good grace - ONLY TRUE CHAMPIONS CAN DO THIS BECAUSE THEY HAVE ONCE BEEN GREAT AND KNOW THE GREAT JOY OF SUCCESS AND THE BITTER TASTE OF DEFEAT - AND ACCEPT BOTH WITH GREAT AND HUMBLE GRACE.

  • Ali trained FOUR MONTHS for George whereas for 90% of his fights Ali only trained 6 weeks. Ali was in absolutely tremendous razor sharp physical condition. Ali's body was like concrete and he was able to weather whatever storm of punishment George delivered. Ali also landed alot of great counterpunches even tho he was fighting off the ropes and was blocking and deflecting most of the punches.
