    • When putting any solvent into engine oil, beware of it knocking chunks of buildup off and clogging oil passages. Solvent is designed to break up oil based buildup which also destroys the polymer chains that IS OIL. i dont blame you for taking your sponsorship, it does what it says but seafoam is a double edged sword.

    • Well it also doesn't say on the bottle if you put it on your gas tank, and let it sit for a couple weeks..... Because it has a lot of alcohol, moisture binds to the alcohol, and then you have a slug of alcohol and water in the bottom of your tank. And it can cause detonation, or pinging. And that can destroy your valves in your engine. There's all kinds of things on the market that can be good or bad depending on conditions.

It was quite expensive to repair, so I’d like to avoid it happening again. For what it’s worth, it also improves my fuel economy by about 2 mpg, which offsets 1/3 of its higher cost.

My wife's father came out and said, "Oh, I can fix that." He went in his garage came out, dumped a can in the tank and then used the vacuum line to slowly suck Sea Foam into the combustion chamber. IT was blowing tons of white smoke and after he was done, said to take it for a 100-mile drive to blow it out and piss off the drivers behind me. • It's really good for a piston ring soak. You remove all of the spark plugs, and pour one ounce into each cylinder. Wait a few minutes, crank the engine over a few times, then add another ounce to each. Let the engine sit overnight. Next day, crank it for 30 seconds to blow out any residual seafoam, reinstall the sparkplugs, and start the engine. It may smoke for a few minutes as it burns the seafoam residue off. Most of the seafood left overnight will leak through the piston rings into the crankcase, cleaning carbon out of the rings on the way. You will need to change the oil appropriate to having seafood in the crankcase oil. I've seen a 20psi bump in compression on an old engine doing this. Marvel Mystery Oil works too.

    • @@tarquineous yes, that's why you leave the sparkplugs out. You pour 1 ounce into each cylinder, spin the engine over a few times, add another ounce, and leave overnight. The next day, you crank the engine over without the sparkplugs to blow any remaining liquid out. THEN you reinstall the plugs and fire it up. Almost all of it will leak down into the crankcase overnight, but spinning it over is just a precaution.

  • SeaFoam in the oil is intended to help clean out sludge and varnish from an old and/or abused engine. If your car is low mileage and/or you take care of it, you don't really need it. If there's a lot of sludge or varnish in an engine, it's a good idea to add SeaFoam to your existing oil for a couple hundred miles prior to an oil change to help clean it out; you don't use it with new oil. However, on a very tired engine that may be held together mostly by sludge, using SeaFoam may cause oil leaks to get worse as the sludge is removed.

  • Seafoam is a solvent. It will thin the oil out, but because it's so thin, it will burn off fairly quickly after it has done it's cleaning duties. The reason you don't want to leave it in your engine very long is not because of the Seafoam, it's because it loosens up all the gunk and that needs to be drained out. If you don't believe me, slowly heat up a pan of Seafoam to 215 degrees or so and see what happens...it will boil off fairly quickly.

  • Allow me to enlighten the masses. Yes. You can use Seafoam in your oil. Adding it just a couple hundred miles before your scheduled oil change, can break down and clean out any baked on carbon and oil sludge. In fact, it works quite well. However, do note that extended use of Seafoam in your oil will cause your gaskets and seals to dry out and become brittle. Expect oil leaks. Alternatively, you can use Marvel Mystery Oil in the same fashion. It doesn’t clean quite as well as Seafoam but alternatively it lubricates and conditions your seals and gaskets, rather than drying them out. For years I’ve been substituting a half to a whole quart of MMO, depending on the outside temp, at the time of an oil change. I drive about 2,000 miles, my normal oil change interval, with marvel in my oil and then repeat.

  • Im that 1% of people who had a bad experience with it. I bought an 05 tacoma with 140k mis. Previous owners likely didnt take care of it much, leading to alot of carbon build up. I used seafoam on and off for 6 months both in my fuel and oil. As the detergent cleaned my engine, it exposed leaks both in my head gasket and cylinder walls. Started getting piston blowby and it went downhill from there. Had to replace the entire engine with a reman(fixing wouldve been around same cost). While it wasnt the seafoam that caused the damage, it certainly exposed the damage. Carbon build up can be good in some cases -- itll seal your engine to a certain extent. Since that experience, i always tell people only use this on new/well maintained vehicles. Older, unmaintained vehicles, should remain untouched. Your working on borrowed time and cleaning everything will likely not fix your problem, but make it worse. Sounds counter intuitive, but thats my experience and ive got over 8k in receipts to prove it lol

    • You are correct if it was maintained poorly. In that case it’s just a beater of problems until the next rig. It’s like buying something with a knock. It just can’t be fixed with liquids. And some cars knock with new oil but run perfect with used old oil. Same with direct injection intake cleaning maintenance. Once carbon is caked on the valves, no spraying will help. At that point, Valves need to be scrubbed clean and likely intake replaced. Maintenance goes a long way. The stuff works great in older vehicles, that had decent maintenance in their life. Seafoam Prevents issues before it’s too far down the line. Considering your experience, it was just too late. Previous owners already ruined the engine. Seafoam works great as a maintenance. Especially in gas tank for intake valves and injectors. I do it a few times a year in gas tank, and I do it once every few years in the oil at most, not every oil change. I also change my oil on time. If cleared carbon made it leak, then gaskets already failed and were bandaided with the buildup. Only a matter of time before sludge prevents oil flow and spins a bearing or causes too much crank case pressure and blow by 02 Lincoln ls v8 at 117k, 06 Jetta 1.9 tdi at 270k, 98 legacy 2.5 at 297k. • I poured Seafoam into the cylinders of my 1991Honda Civic si. The car was burning tons of oil & was hardly driven. So, as a last resort before rebuilding my motor with 200,000 miles on it, I tried something I saw on KZhead. The KZheadr poured Seafoam into the cylinders and started the car about an hour later. The idiot could have bent his connecting rods. What I did was a little different. I poured Seafoam into each cylinder & loosely put the spark plugs in & let the car sit overnight. The next morning, I put a small dowel into each cylinder to see how much fluid was still in the cylinders. Then, I removed the remaining Seafoam & bumped the starter to move the pistons to a different position. I did this 4 times, twice using Seafoam & the last two times I used Marvel Mystery Oil. To my surprise, this process totally fixed my oil consumption issue. I used to use 10-40 oil with Hyperlube, which is very thick & it consumed a lot of oil. Now I use 5-30 oil & it doesn't burn almost any oil at all. My conclusion is that the pistons & rings had carbon buildup & the rings were frozen. By filling the cylinders with Seafoam & then Marvel Mystery Oil, this allowed the liquid to seep down the cylinders/pistons, which is not possible during a motor flush. Also, by bumping the motor, this allowed the rings to break free from the carbon. This would allow the rings to operate as they should. This was an unbelievable fix for me & that's why I'm sharing my results. My 1991 Honda Civic si now has about 214,000 miles on the original motor and still is running great years after I did this Seafoam/Marvel Mystery Oil fix.

  • My experience is seafoam will really help with small, 2 cycle motors like outboards and snow machines that have sat for extended periods of time. Put in the fuel and it will (somehow) recondition seals and allow the fuel system to start the engine just run better. TBH I don't know quite how it works but if you've got an engine that's not run for years, put it in the fuel pretty heavy and it might just straighten it out.

    • I had to get rid of my '94 Integra a few years ago, just because I'm no longer able to drive a manual transmission. About once a year, when the engine started getting noisy and had a little less power, i would put a can of that through the intake manifold. Let that stuff really soak in for about 30 minutes and then give it an "Italian tuneup". Occasionally dump half the can into the oil a few days before the oil change. You could definitely feel the difference that stuff made!

    • I work on small engines and I buy Saefoam fuel injector cleaner by the case. It's a spray that is applied directly into the cylinder via the spark plug. I'll use 6-8oz, which smokes itself out in under 15 min. The fuel additive is less effective because the amount that is used per tank is not enough to really smoke out carbon. Moreover, im not a huge fan of messing with 2 stroke oil mixes. Seafoam can cause a fuel mix to run a little too rich, which then has to be tuned out. The fuel additive is More trouble than its worth, imo.

I replaced the sending unit and my fuel gauge started working again. Later on in the truck's life I put seafoam in the diesel again and lost yet another float on my sending unit. Since my gauge quit working both times after putting seafoam in and I had to replace the sending unit twice I never put seafoam in my diesel again and I never lost another sending unit float. Truth. Related ? No proof, but the truth. Factory new the float was a black foam looking device. Stuff ate it....

Spray it in your air intake to clean/ clear out your catalytic converter ( while the car is running) or pour in, and stop once the car begins to stall. And a big cloud of white smoke will come out. Restart it and drive until smoke stops ( heavy on your fuel pedal, safely )

  • It thins the oil a little and then the oil acts as a parts washer internally. It doesn't decrease the viscosity too much, just enough to perform the intended task. Marvel Mystery oil is a great one for that and it like sea foam cleans the top end, heads and valve etc. i got a 1967 283 from a coworker whose son crashed the car. If sold it to a guy on the job site. He came in the next day with it on the back with the head off. The head was spanking. Clean. The previous owner told me since the car was new, he used marvel mystery oil in the crank case and the fuel tank as recommended. Im telling you! • Best thing to do is spray an entire can into the intake while engine is running then shut it off and let it sit overnight if possible. Then take it for a drive and “ get all the smoke out “. This will loosen stuck piston rings and clean the combustion chambers well. Then dump a can in the crankcase and let it run at high idle for 20 min. change the oil and filter. I have repaired oil burning engines this way and it is very effective.

    • @@kccodex8931 Seafoam does not contain PEA, so it's really not the best carbon cleaner out there; using the spray in your intake shouldn't cause you any problems, but it's also not removing much(if any) carbon build-up either...the more potent intake cleaner sprays like CRC do have PEA in them and there is always that chance that it'll knock off a big enough chunk to get stuck in your catalytic converter which will burn and cause damage to it if it stays there long enough but truth be told if your engine has THAT much carbon build-up on the valves and/or pistons, that could happen anyway just during regular operation!

  • Yes, it can be used in oil, and it works great at keeping engines clean. I’ve used seafoam on all my engines for years with excellent results, but you can easily get in trouble if used on a very dirty engine. I poured some in the oil of an old 1993 nissan sentra that had a quite a bit of sludge. A couple of days later the oil lamp started to flicker, and seconds later it spun a bearing. It cleans so well, that a big chunk of sludge came loose and clogged up an oil galley. For extra dirty engines, use with caution, or go with a less aggressive cleaning solution.
