Back then with little to no protection to the forwards against the great defenders of that time... Imagine what he could have done in modern day football.. imagine what he could have done without those dozen of injuries... Very underated legendary... He could have been recognized in same level as maradona of 94 world cup had italy won that event

Thank you Niraj to share this rare footage. Baggio did unbelievable things with a pure style that made impossible becoming possible. This man made the difference in every single match he played, regardless if playing full match or the 5 last minutes. Elegant, absolutely technically perfect, always seeing before and forward everyone else, and especially, mentally too strong. He easily could have stopped playing when he was a teenage with the first Injury, he played with a leg and a half for all his carrier, several bad injuries,against sometimes coaches trying to pull him down as you can't say to Baggio what to do in the pitch. He's been to me, and to many, the greatest Italian player ever, and to me, and not only, without injuries he could have been, if is not, in the first 3 greatest ever.

I'm going to get a baggio tattoo on my leg. Symbolic. Amazing quick feet but his legs were the most fragile part of him. I'll let you know when I have it done. Trying to get the perfect art in my head but I'm thinking a Japanese style with his buddhist beliefs. He's my favourite footballer ever. The reason I got into football. Just remember my brother talking about how good he was and then I got to see him on channel 4 and the world cup 98 I was blown away. Would have loved him at my club Leeds Utd

Great video, I especially appreciate seeing that good run he had against Austria at France 98, which I cannot seem to get a proper look at anywhere else. He was on very good form at that World Cup and seemed unhampered by injury too; such a shame he wasn't in from the start against France. He and Albertini created that excellent chance which he almost converted late in the game. They needed his brilliance from the off.

In 1998 he was underutilized by Maldini ... and sadly in 2002 they didn't take him in the team. He deserved to be played in both these world cups

And think that only the images of the youngest Baggio with da red and white lines shirt were expressing his "real" talent. At 18 he destroyed his knee and had to play the rest of his career with only one leg (and in Brescia he destroyed that knee too)

No wonder he got severely injured in his early 20s, fast paced dribbling like that would draw lots of tackles, same happened to R9 albeit he was born with defective knee.

True, his style - as with Maradona - was just too smart and fast for opposing players, which led to him receiving a lot of punishment. Having said that, from what I recall, both of Baggio's terrible knee injuries as a teenager (one at Vicenza and another just as he got underway at Fiorentina) were extremely innocuous and unlucky.

Na minha opinião sem as lesões que sofreu iria muito mais longe e não teria nenhum jogador a altura por muito tempo. Ele era completo. E era mais inventivo que Messi. E seria melhor que Messi. Não jogava apenas avançado para se consagrar fazendo muitos gols como alguns que são festejados por aí, com exceção de Messi, claro, que joga o campo todo.

Sure, Messi has all the trophies and incredible stats, but let's not forget how much easier todays game is. Everything, from the quality of the pitches, diets, training, medical facilities to the actual game itself - no tackling from behind, far more protection from the refs, a more open-attacking game, more space, weaker defenders and defenses.... is geared in favour of the forwards. This wasn't the case in the 70's, 80's and 90's, especially in Italy. This could be subjective; I preferred Baggio's style over Messi's. Baggio had more depth to his game - he could play as a forward or a playmaker. He was more balanced off both feet and to me at least, he was more unpredictable. Another crucial factor is the supporting cast. Baggio may have had great defenders behind him, but not always great and creative midfielders and forwards/wingers. I can only think of the likes of Giannini, Albertini, Pirlo, Vialli, Mueller, Donadoni, Signori, with maybe one or two of these at a time, whereas Messi was backed by quality and quantity; Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets, Suarez, Neymar, Tevez, Mascherano, Riquelme, Aguero, Verratti, Cambiasso, Di Maria. Finally, Messi's coaches has always built the team around him in order to maximise his talent, while Baggio was never truly appreciated by any of his coaches (aside from Mazzone) he was forced to fit into their rigid systems; shackled, and often either played out of position, instructed to play against his natural tendencies, benched and not even called up for Italy, never once playing in the European Championships. An absolute footballing tragedy.

Baggio foi excepcional, era caçado em campo no campeonato mais competitivo do mundo naquela época, o italiano, onde estavam os maiores zagueiros e líberos. Era fácil jogar no espanhol e no holandês. Ele lutou contra tudo isso, inclusive inveja. Baggio foi sim um dos maiores de todos os tempos, e na minha humilde opinião foi o mais elegante jogador da história.

@@ItaThe3rd I think it's Fiorentina; when the camera closes in a bit the shirt number and shorts look purple to me, and Baggio seems too quick for this to have been 2000 or beyond. Also the figure in goal has a stature and stance which reminds me of Zenga.

Baggio foi excepcional, era caçado em campo no campeonato mais competitivo do mundo naquela época, o italiano, onde estavam os maiores zagueiros e líberos. Era fácil jogar no espanhol e no holandês. Ele lutou contra tudo isso, inclusive inveja. Baggio foi sim um dos maiores de todos os tempos, e na minha humilde opinião foi o mais elegante jogador da história.
