But can you get the same performance gain as safely from the 4 cylinder as you can with the v8?
Why do you need to?
offset the power loss from adding accessories, bigger rubber, GVM upgrades, better towing, because faster = better.@@fullboost
I guess not everyone wants to void their warranty on a brand new car which is completely understandable.
true, but there are plenty doing it.@@fullboost
Luke's risking getting shanked in a BCF carpark after all that shit talk. Worth it 😂
Nah he's not alone
Honestly, I am an OG subscriber and I don't even like 4wds, however, FullBoost you guys are consistently so good, you guys are my favourite KZhead channel by far. I wanted to say something negative to get on bench torque but I just can't bring myself to. Keep up the good work
At least there is someone out there that can admit they don't like 4wds😅 I kinda like them don't like them lol.

That'll be it's best feature, a better soundtrack
I'd still atleast rather listen to some V8 sound then a fart cannon 4 cylinder lol.
I'm bewildered why Toyota dropped the 1HD FTE in favour of the 1VD, the inline6 has so much more development potential.
because the 1HD is 700 years old. Then again, so is the 70 series.
I want to drop a new 1HD FTE in my 80 series but I don't have a spare $20-30k yes you can still buy them brand new. My dream build would be a 80 series 1HD FTE with a 40 series cab
How?.. How does a 4.2 I6 have more potential then a 4.5 V8?.. Emissions laws as they stand now have killed the 1HD.. Take emissions laws out of it the 1VD would be killer. That’s the reason they are the way they are stock. Open them up properly and they fly.
@@w_stankyno, the 1HD even has a lot more tuning potential 1vd is just a massive overhyped paperweight

We always enjoy a bit of friendly banter about the 70 Series with Luke @ Fullboost. Our next step is to tear the car down completely and 3D scan everything. Scan packs will soon be available for purchase. Then we will re assemble it to offer GVM Upgrade Testing.
Will be interesting to see if there's any upgrades to the chassis... Like if they've updated the dual cab for ancap, or does ancap not apply to medium goods vehicles??
Would like to see same test with max GVM 😅
Nothing an LS swap can't fix and make it more reliable.
What back to petrol You serious
More reliable lol.😂
LMAO. The dryness of this channel is truly underrated. Sucked in if you own a V8 70 and this is your upgrade arc.
The 73/74 series with the 3F petrol and 13B-T turbo diesel were available here in Australia with the A440F automatic from factory. It was the same transmission used in the 60/62 and early 80 series. It was also used in some Coaster buses.
Last new Toyota I bought BJ 73 in 1985 3 bt and was faster than my brothers hj 47
Thank you Guy’s great Video’s.

I own one too 2023 gxl . Pull 1.8 Tons camper trailer like a v6 does very happy with how it performs off and on roads .
Great video, I love these deep dives. And yes I fully expected it to be worse, but I would still have the manual V8 over the auto 4 pot.

Never late in a 2.8! 😂
*Never great in a 2.8!
An updated and more modern version of the 1hd-fte would have been absolutely gold... Or, maybe Toyota could just add 2 more cylinders to the existing 2.8L design, resulting in a completely new and modern 4.2L turbo diesel.. Just thinking out loud here... Great video guyz..
indeed... bringing back the legendary 4.2 based on the 2.8 would have been awesome. toyota dropped the ball. here
Good thinking.. but Japanese are better at it😂
What for? Just two extra cylinders sitting there with a billion dollars spent to redesign and engineer the block for a gain of probably 30 crank hp then other unknown areas like reliability? Sounds like the worst investment possible.
@@joshthomas2536 I'm sure reliability would not be an issue, it could also be argued that it might even be more reliable than the 4 cylinder... I highly doubt a redesign adding 2 more cylinders to an existing design will cost a "Billion Dollars" 😆😆 And the reliable gains in power and torque, especially at lower revs is an attraction for many truck owners..
@@joshthomas2536 yeah i see your point. they also have a 4.0L 4cyl from Hino 300/Coaster which is more suited for heavy duty truck work. I was talking to a young fella off a cashed up farm. His grandpa, also cashed up, only drives his V8 turbo diesel landcruiser around at 80kmh. 100kmh he can watch the diesel gauge drop over 10 minutes... LC and 4 pots don’t mix. Politically wrong.
Love it when everyone whines about the power and reliability because everyone drive 400ks across the desert towing 3ton everyday. No these will mostly be seen driving around cities.
It's embarrassing how the market is pushing for the new 70 series.
Just wondering with the maintenance and repair bills with the new one ? Like 2.8 litre doing the same power as the v8 4.5 litre.. ? Cheers 🍻
Ive got a stock tune 2020 v8 . I didn’t buy it to race to 100 lol. It’s all about the stroke! 😊 I think you’ll find the 2.8 will drink quite a bit of fuel when working hard. I tow 1.8 t all day. It hardly knows it’s there and still get 14.5l per hundred on the highway. Edit. My n70 hilux used just as much fuel and worked harder.
They will have a much shorter life if your working it hard like towing a lot.
Like the 1VD, here in our mines they're dead by 15,000km.
I've got a n80 and it tows very efficiently.
That’s it mate , it’s not about who can get down a drag strip the fastest , it is about power delivery, smoothness and longevity , and if I was hunting for a second handy , I would consider a well looked after V8 with 200,000 Ks on it , I wouldn’t even think about a 4 banger with that mileage.
Meanwhile i have a 2017 LC200 which gets 14L on the highway not towing and 19L driving around town.
The automatic now also comes with the 1GR V6 70-series in other markets.

I can only dream of these engines😂 I still have my 2001 Hilux 3l 2.8 NA. Slow as hell but ultra reliable😅
This is going to hurt a lot of egos 😂
Yeah true, the V8 79 series has gotta be one of the slowest (and lowest power to weight) utes on the road now, probably no quicker then a Mahindra 🤦😂
It was just too hard for toyota to fit a proper width rear axle and to make proper shaped rear doors as there is no wheel arch to account for. WHY after asking so much money for these things cant they at least get the most basic of things right ? The interior is still a time warp from the '80's.
First time watching you guys and have really enjoyed this, the tall guy seems like the Aussie version of Stephen Merchant, the actor and comedian who works with Ricky Gervais

V8 is smelly, slow, chews fuel like like no tomorrow, but I'm never getting rid of mine. It's cost more than a porche to build and get it right but it takes the family where ever they want to go, towing a 3.5t van. Love it so much have a brand new crate motor, pump, injectors and fitting kit sitting in the garage, next to the sub 4sec family sporty for those fast trips on the blacktop and the school run (misso is a lead foot, love u dear ❤).

Anyone can make a highly tuned 4 cylinder motor faster than a detuned v8 , the difference is a strange phenomenon called reliability ! The more hi tech you make it , the less reliable your toy becomes , some people want reliability and dont give a toss about having 100 ecus' and 2500 sensors to make your toy the best , land rover have yet to learn that , Toyota should not be playing such foolish games on the 70 series , which was the most reliable offroader around , now they put in the seriously flawed and unreliable gd6 4 cylinder in it with all the problems inherited from the hilux and fortuners , well done , sack the bean counters and let the engineers build the cars .

Tall trucks and old mate the tree, makes Luke look like an elf.
Can someone do a test with them both at 3.3ton which they will eventually run at.
Results will be the same or better for the 2.8. 4cyl has 70nm more torque.

Would love to see a review over a couple of days with some weight to simulate an overlander. Load both with 500kg and hook up an offroad camper/trailer then test them on different surfaces over proper distances. I expect the V8 to do better in the sand then or maybe the auto gearbox of the new one will outperform the old bull? I do prefer manual when 4x4-ing but nowadays the autoboxes are pretty good.
4 pot will win. 70 nm's more is more and will be noticeable. V8's have never had much torque for towing.
That 4 pot has to scream at high constant revs to make those peak torque figures the V8 already makes effortlessly down low. Just the usual story with displacement.
@@TheRandomActivity Scream at constant high revs? 😂 It's a diesel and doesn't rev any harder than the 8 pot! Also it has bigger pistons than the 8, and will reach the 8 pots max torque levels at lower revs than it will reach it's own max torque levels. Therefore doing it quite easy.

Time will tell with 😊
isn't that speedo reminiscent of the original Landcruiser's?
"there's no replacement for... Boost"😂 true though, boost is displacement at the end of the day. Though what I don't understand is why you have 2 Toyotas where the front end is finished but the back end looks like an x-ray
Most new 4wd's are much quicker these days because of the 8 and 10 speed transmissions, what is the comparison in rebuild cost between an auto and a manual? I've heard 10k plus for a F250 auto rebuild.
Both motors are the same on paper almost but that auto with the extra ratio really makes a difference. I’d still prefer the v8 though for a lower stressed motor. I can’t see that 4cyl doing 500000+km

V8, I4? Doesn't matter. The 7x series LandCruisers have always been laundry list of upgrades from factory to make drivable. Still has the goofy leaf rear. I wonder if they bothered to fix the track width disparity? Let me guess, the handbrake is still trash? I wonder how long the dpf system will last till expensive replacement? hpw about auto v8 and auto 4cyl. that would be the true test. dual cab for both etc.... you have to test apples with apples. On looks I cancelled my new dual cab order as I just don't like the front end, will look at a now old style dual cab somewhere down the line.
If they're ditching the V8, which is why they have the wider diff track in the front, will they now go back to the narrower front diff?
Apparently the axle widths, front and back have not changed. Why, I'll never know, maybe just toyota being lazy ?
