Former Diamond Thief And Detective Rate 7 Jewel Heists In Movies And TV | How Real Is It? | Insider

Former burglar Octave "Oky" Durham and art detective Arthur Brand look at seven jewel-theft scenes from popular TV shows and movies and rate them based on realism.
They look at "Ocean's Eight" (2018), "King of Thieves" (2018), "Lupin" S1E1 (2021), "Man on a Ledge" (2012), "The Return of the Pink Panther" (1975), "Cradle 2 the Grave" (2003), and "The Hatton Garden Job" (2017).
Are safes as difficult to crack as in the movies? Are jewel heists meticulously planned, or normally smash and grab? Are larger gems more valuable than smaller ones? How can you tell if a movie diamond looks fake? And do thieves use any unusual gadgets to steal gems?

    • He did miss a very real part of it, even tho they did the typical HWood trope of never having to reload. Those tools they were using to pop the deposit box locks are very real, except you have to reload after each pop. Now a days they are shaped like guns, the ones they were using require a hammer to smack them, it’s a nail gun for attaching wood to concrete or steel. You put a little “bullet” in but there’s no bullet, it’s just a charge, and it drives a steel post into a nail, if you don’t load a nail, that post will blow up almost any lock. It works incredibly well. Like unbelievably well. I’ve never seen a padlock survive one hit, a safety deposit box lock wouldn’t stand a chance. It takes a second to reload, so if there’s two locks on the box it doesn’t matter. They are super loud tho, but I guess an RPG is louder.

  • I love this duo, especially Oky's vibe, they need a show of their own. A small addendum, as a physicist, I can say that liquid nitrogen is not as dangerous as it sounds, you can casually pour it into your hand without any problems (the leidenfrost effect protects you), the problem is in the prolonged contact. As for the movie scene, you would need an absurd amount to freeze all that mass of metal, which would be unfeasible

    @luizmiranda9095@luizmiranda90952 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, we use it to freeze stuff at work regularly and if something falls in, it is really not that hard to just... grab it out. Gloves off, though, because if there is a hole in the glove and it gets inside and trapped there... now that is trouble! Liquid ethane scares me more.

      @nickwood1062@nickwood10622 жыл бұрын
  • just to clarify: the reason for the consistent disparity in their ratings is (probably) that they are both rating it's realism _according to their experiences_ so the thief guy is rating things compared to a career of hundreds of successful robberies (and at least 1 not so successful one) and thousands of stories of how things work and how things go wrong, meanwhile the cop guy is rating more compared to the _bad_ thieves that actually left a real case to work with many of which are bad explicitly _because_ they think movies are good instructional materials, heck, he even goes on about exactly that happening a couple times in the video...kinda sounds like he's fanboying over the pink panthers really. as he put it "I think that...around...7 or 8 percent has been recovered" so a disproportionate portion of his personal sample set falls into that outlier group...especially if that number is anywhere near as inflated as it reasonably would be.

    • to some extent maybe, but just because you haven't recovered a stolen painting, doesn't mean always you don't know how it was taken.

      @yourmum69_420@yourmum69_420 Жыл бұрын
    • @@yourmum69_420 yep! but they are still both going to have disproportionately skewed views the [cop] likely moreso than the [thief] especially when the cop's job in the video is to provide the audience-representative perspective while the thief's is to laugh and/or groan at the clips and provide an expert opinion that appears good enough to justify the laughing and groaning to the audience. how-to-craft-a-story wise it leaves the thief in a much better position to _actually_ act as an expert while sticking to their role in the story/presentation, they are also a lot more free to share information on how things actually work without infringing on things back in the real world.
