I read an interview about the Aston Martin Cygnet with the then boss of Aston Martin. Apparently, the Cygnet was actually nothing to do with emission targets (as Aston Martin didn't sell enough cars for the emission targets to apply.) Instead, it was done because some market research claimed there was a demand for a city car daily driver amongst Aston owners, although it was clearly bad market research
There probably _is_ and was demand for a daily driver amongst Aston owners but that means/meant something more along the lines of the DBX and not the Cygnet.
Thank you for the information 👍👍 keep up the good work
See the link below and read the number three reason for them introducing the Cygnet spoken by the same boss that you speak of. When you're talking auto company, the main reason is usually not the first reason. You have to make money. Mercedes introduced Smart for the same reason... to avoid penalties for not meeting European emissions. Aston didn't have the money to produce it's own car, so they turned to Toyota. The video isn't wrong. www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/aston-why-we-built-cygnet
@@terbennett I can't find the interview I was thinking of (retrospectively I think it might have been a designer), but I found one with the then chairman of Aston martin. When asked whether the motive behind the Cygnet was CO2 targets , He responded "No, it was fundamentally based on customer demand. The notion that maybe our customers are conscious about their own behaviour and green aspects of their lives, and driving a car like Cygnet in the city is perfect - leaving the DB9 for a blast in the country." Whilst I agree manufacturers are rarely honest with their actual justifications of business plans given that number 1 and 2 are 'To avoid going bankrupt' and 'Because we think it will sell' I think it's safe to say reason number 3 was more of a happy coincidence. Particularly since Aston Martin sold too few cars to be fined at the time, and have made little effort to reduce CO2 now fines have been implemented. www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/industry-news/aston-martin/car-reader-interviews-aston-martin-chairman-david-richards-2012/

@@brantleyfoster021 Oh that's interesting haha
Trabant didnt have soft limiter,😃 didnt have even rev counter😅😁😂😂
@@One-sk4fp It's true though, well at first it came with brake's that would just lock up & send the car spinning into a tree. Lancia halted production of the car to fix the issue, what they did was remove the brake servo - so than you had no brake's at all. There was no Lancia's in Chris's list despite them creating some of the worst car's ever made to me. The Lancia Gamma for instance exploded every time you turned the steering wheel, just had to have a death insurance if you bought one. Than you have the Lancia Beta that was equipped with metal panel's so thin that on a windy day it would actually change shape & be subject to rusting too quickly - you learned never to leave them outside during a storm if you wanted to come back to a car instead of a rusting trash pile. The V6 Fiero made for the last year,1988, was a decent car. They gave it a new front suspension that worked and the 2.8 six when serviced right has shown it can run for ages. Typical GM. Make the car work right then undersell it and kill it because Lord knows we can’t have a fun two seater for the masses. Me, if someone gave me one I’d go find a wrecked GMC Terrain with the 301hp 3.6 V6 and figure out how to stuff that in there. Now THAT engine will do well past 100,000 miles with just common service. Mines at 105,000 and counting. Winds to seven grand with a nice note. Yep, GM killed that engine choice too a few years ago. I see a pattern here.

Wow, loads of actual false info in this one.
Just a small point on the DeLorean spares ("good luck on getting any spares") - there's a US based company which I think is actually called DMC that bought up all the stock and even original equipment to make some of the panels and plastic moulds/parts, so you could in effect build a DeLorean from scratch - a bit like how you can buy almost a complete MG MGB from the heritage company in the UK.
Ok let’s get this straight once and for all! The trabant was an excellent and pioneering car! When it came out in the early sixties that 26hp was more than enough from a car that only weighed around 600kg thanks to being made from a revolutionary lightweight material. Let’s also not forget that it got that 26hp from a 600cc engine. A fiat 500 only had about 12 and the early minis of the time only made 34hp. The trabant also had the same layout as the mini being front engined and front wheel drive witch was very advanced for the time. It was also much more practical and didn’t rust so f**k everyone who thinks it wasn’t a charming and ingenious car.
I have a later 1.1 Trabant and I love it!
Making the body out of recycled material is not a minus - as the video may suggest. And I am sure the "dirty underwear" are washed and processed before becoming a Trabi. The major disadvantage was the lack of major development and improvements in the 30+ years it was produced. Which, btw is a political decision, not lack of engineers at Trabant.
@@schmoosmith Is the 1.1 a 2-stroke? And does it have the characteristic 2-stoke smell?
I understand that there was a camp tent model of the Trabant. (Tent folded out from the car for overnight camping space) also some SAABs had smoking 2 stroke engines
@@todortodorov940 No, the 1.1 was a 4 stroke unit. They only fitted them for the last 18 months of production.

Thanks for the video. Can you or anyone help me understand why the Fiero is a mid engine car, Matt talks about engine fires and shows front end fires? Does the oil travel down cooler lines? Thank you.
3:11, That Pontiac Fire (Fiero) looked like it had more ground clearance than a Land Cruiser 😳 😳 😳
That's a thing that car haulers do. They put solid pucks under the springs to boost the ride height so that they don't damage the undercarriage during loading and unloading. The person taking delivery of the vehicle (usually a dealer) will pretty much always have them removed.
The Trabant was my dad's first car (in communist Romania, back in the 80s) and, tbh, it wasn't that bad. It had a motorbike engine and it was also very light, so it wasn't really a slouch (at least compared with those days Dacias). The engine surely made a rumble and sometimes you would blind those behind with blue smoke, but other than that it was quite okay. As for the bodywork, I recall it being made out of compressed carton, not "cotton". Anyway, it reminds me of my childhood and some great drives around the country, so I'm both sorry and glad to see it on this list :).
You are wrong. There's documentary on KZhead about Trabant and how it was made. Body parts were made from cotton mixed with epoxy resin and then pressed to desired form.

Hey Matt love carwow and all your videos but could you please do a video on Diesel gate to inform more people about what it's all about. THANK YOU
The fiero was a great car it was just a small engineering failure that can be fixed and its not impossible to fix it lol
fiero became greatly improved when the Chevrolet HO 660 V6 was put in it (same engine in the Pontiac 6000 STE)
Some Trabys were made from old newspaper, cardboard, and fibreglass resin.
but reliant was even worse
It was only made from compressed cotton waste and resin. That's what the DDR got from the Soviet Union to build a car, they've kept the valuable steel for themselves for mostly military purposes.
@carwow I love your reviews. How come that Matt never reviewed a Lotus Elise or Exige ? :)

"DMC DeLorean" -> DeLorean DMC12
It’s been realized in recent years that DMC 12 was the name of the pre-production car only. The make is DMC and the model is DeLorean.
Oh there has to be part two. I am waiting 😁
1:10 The PRV engine came in versions (presumably without U.S. emissions equipment) that produced up to 197 HP without turbocharging. I'm surprised that Delorean didn't make these available in the markets where such engines would have been legal. If they were trying to sell cars that met U.S. emissions standards in markets with looser requirement, it's no wonder they couldn't compete.
The PRV was not only of a low tune but, the contracted engines were of far lower quality, everything from block materials, piston spec, rods, heads to bearing, anything to save cost per unit bought in, often against the advice of Renault whom actually built the engines👍
Wow! The Reliant Robin and the Yugo GV didn't make the cut?

Matt I expect so much more from you. You had three mistakes on the first car. Back to the future was released in 1985 one year after the Delorean factory closed, parts are actually very easy to get since all the unused parts from production were purchased by an American company, and lastly Delorean was acquired on the drug charges when the courts ruled the government sting was entrapment (they approached him with the idea knowing he needed cash fast). Then you show a Fiero with a front fire when the engine is in the rear. Shame on you.

You could get 3 into them as long as one had his head out of the sunroof and his feet on the seat. Girls loved them because they were warmer, more private and errr, had room enough, nudge nudge. Defo a better pull than a scooter on a cold night. We took six of them from Bristol to Torquay for a week and had the time of our lives, no breakdowns and plenty of action. Mine did blow up a week later leaving engine bits all over the road but I still got a good px against my next scooter. So don’t badmouth the Isetta, it was a champ.

Wow dude how about you do some research before you make a video. There’s a warehouse in Texas with thousands of DeLorean parts. Parts are even being reproduced. Also, the factory at the time had state of the art technology and was built in record time. Way to focus on the negative to get views! Every Irish person in that factory took pride in that car. Read a book. Do some real research, instead of parroting misinformation.
There are also no DeLoreans that are road-worthy in the UK because they no longer exist on British and Irish roads(as in, they haven't been registered in either nation for many years). Also, that "new company" hasn't even begun any work on repurposing any of those spare parts. Nor have any of them been tuned to have more power.
@@DR3ADER1 I love random comments on the internet. Seriously, first of all there are 6000 DeLoreans estimated to be left in existence, the vast majority of them being in the United States. Repurposing parts? Why do they have to repurpose them when there’s literally thousands of owners still in existence who are exhausting even some of the current supplies? For example, binnacles and other interior parts are fully exhausted. Left front fenders are now hard to find. They were developing a twin turbo for the car when the company went bust. Plenty of owners have “upgraded” their engines. There’s a guy with an LS swap. The “new” DeLorean motor company offers upgrades to the engines as well. Come on now.
@@Patriot119 There were meant to be DOUBLE that for the company to break even. The fact that there are less than 6,000 on the road in North America is borderline miraculous at best. Furthermore, while the factory was completed in "record" time, the cost overruns, industrial issues and engineering delays meant that the production was heavily disrupted and pushed back by two years. Additionally, of the estimated 6,000 or so on the road, few are in full working order and even fewer are in mint condition because these cars were poorly built junkheaps. Even this model, listed here on DRIVETRIBE( drivetribe.com/p/mint-condition-1981-delorean-up-Q-PMshSPR3mKf1XNKtYEgQ?iid=SKYuiBLBTkW8Tu9qSlC2ww ) has the following issues: - The "Door Ajar" indicator no longer works - The left turn indicator, no longer works - The Radio Display is inoperable and definitely does NOT work And a few more electrical issues that may or may not re-appear in time. Just because there are thousands of people who own a vehicle of the same make, doesn't mean that said vehicles are all in tip-top condition. The above link also details that this particular DeLorean had to be shelved in storage for 3 decades because maintaining it after active use would be too costly and pointless. These cars are more fragile than a set of rare 50s-era Ferraris, yet when they were new, they were both too slow and cheap to even rationalise their fragility and unreliability. Furthermore, the "New" DeLorean company hasn't even fulfilled or substantiated any of their claims, predictably so. This is the same company who claimed to be restarting production back in 2015 and in 2018. Guess what? They failed the first time and lied the second time. They also lied about restarting production in 2020, as no evidence of said reproduction has actually surfaced.
@@DR3ADER1 I actually own one. I have not experienced what you are talking about. I’ve owned it for 16 years. My car is not a junk heap, it’s well taken care of. Many people in the DeLorean community take care of their DeLoreans and most of them run. Where are you getting this info? Do you own one? There are/were DeLorean car shows where hundreds of cars attend. I attended the Back to the Future the ride closing event at Universal and over 100 RUNNING DeLoreans showed up. Yes the new DeLorean motor company has made claims about new cars for decades and never followed through. We in the DeLorean community roll our eyes every time it happens but that has nothing to do with our original discussion here in which you made false claims.
Thank you Mat for not puting the Yugo on the list. 😄👍
5:09 My grandpa and my dad had Trabants and they were the best cars they ever had
Please revieuw the Cyan Volvo P1800. I never tought i would say this about a Volvo but ... Its one of the most beautiful cars i've ever seen. And its specially engineered for the ultmate driving pleasure. This car is just heaven for the real petrol heads.
46 of you can’t be first
The marketing power of Back to Future didn't mean much for the DeLorean when the first film came out 3 years after the company went bust lol. That being said the worst part of DeLorean is the reliability. I owned one for a few years and it stranded me 3 times, all for electrical issues.
That Isetta bubble car looks like it’s constantly reversing when it’s in motion 😂
The yugo is definitely the worst car ever
Have you owned one?
Not that bad
@@BokiXI just some child that watches one youtube video then thinks its the worst

@@Luckyjo21 well ok I guess,do you think that everyone should own a car to have a opinion on it?? I am sorry if it's your favourite car and I hurt your feelings
1951 hoffman is without doubt the worst car ever made
