  • Do you know why why never had these problems earlier? Because we just used what we had and were happy about them. We just never thought much about it. I have struggled hard just like you this year and had to stop and think hard about this because I have always loved planning but this year it basically turned into a problem instead. I realized that the problem wasn´t the planners it was my way of thinking. All this "maybe" ruined my planning. So I made a desicion, I decided to focus on actually planning instead of looking on what I can plan with! The only time I actually stepped outside that was when I had to make a desicion about what I was going to use for 2024...I finally decided I was going to use my beloved Hobonichi weeks. I honestly think you have the same problem, you focus too much on "what if I use this..." instead of making the best of what you have. Honestly you can never sucseed if you always look for something better.

    • I agree with you. I have been into “planners” for many years and when I start thinking of another system or planner instead of just working the one I’m in it all goes to crap for me. I hop around, spend money I shouldn’t, lose information all on the chase. For me I only watch 3 planner channels because most do not resonate with me so that helps. I think you made a very good point here.

    • This is true 90% of the time. For me, I was so happy with the Common Planner in B6 from Sterling Ink and then my life changed. I am now working remote, my family is starting a side business and I have plans of my own to start a financial project plus a search for a new house. So, the Common Planner is just not working right now. I still love it to journal/memory keep, so I am using it to memory keep now, but I had to buy different planners for next year because I honestly don't know what will work for me. I also bought different sizes to try. I hope that I can find a system that works and be able to use it for a while. But, honestly, I don't know.

      @joannavaldez@joannavaldez7 ай бұрын
    • @@joannavaldez that’s definitely understandable. I believe that once we find our planning style and know our needs it’s easy to stick with our planners and just tweak how we use them in f we need to adapt or planning gets a little stale. But I also know that life changes and our planning needs change with those changes. And I believe we should definitely change our planners when our needs change or the planner is no longer doing it’s job. Sometimes that means we need a different size or style. Sometimes it means we have to add to our system and have more than one planner. I also don’t think any planner system (paper or digital) is 💯 perfect or will be everything we need unless we custom design our own planners to our lives and even then they aren’t perfect because our needs in different times of the year or even different weeks change. We have to learn to find the system that checks most of the boxes and adapt it to make it the perfect fit for us - and be ok with adapting if our needs change.

  • I don't think it's hobonichi... I think it's people. When you think about it hobonichi planners are very functional and that's what they are created for. I'm sure many people use them only in a functional way. It's people who add stickers and colors and covers and blah blah blah. The reason there are so many options now is because people are willing to spend all this money on so many things. Companies would be crazy not to use this opportunity to capitalize on it. I'm this way too ... I've just been more responsible with my spending and really paid attention to what I really use. I use my rings planner for pen to paper and I use those inserts to decide what I want to memory keep and I use a standard size book bound planner for that. I'm pretty happy with that. I don't want to spend so much time on a hobby that stresses me out. It's just not worth it for me anymore

  • I don't think it's any one brand's fault for the indecisiveness and FOMO tendencies of the planner world - Erin Condren, Happy Planner, Plum Paper, Day Designer etc. have all had their hand in creating scarcity mentalities, later summer/early fall releases, paper quality discussions etc. etc. for the last 8 years if not more (just maybe in smaller online corners) i think if youre looking at your planner in terms of "how many views will a video get" you'll constantly be setting yourself up for personal disappoint, but if you view your planner as "how will this fun piece of stationary help me organize my life? what are my must haves?" and stick with that, you won't fall victim to FOMO and what other folks are doing. i love ballpoint pens. i'm using less and less stickers. through trying various planner layouts and brands over the last two years i've really narrowed it down to what works, and i've ordered two planners to choose from, i'll pick one and then the other will either become a journal, or a backup for if the desire to do something else creeps up but i feel like ive made my bed and im going to just lie in it for 2024. obvi what works for me may not work for you but i think it really is a mental shift rather than trying to goldilocks it.

    • I would agree about just using the planner and that other brands have also caused the planner world to feel the need to decide too soon. I do want to mention that I don’t choose a planner for YT views, I use what I want in the moment. I was mentioning timing Hobonichi stuff for when people are searching, but not using that planner for views. I’ve had moments I want to throw it out, but it always comes back around and I want to use it again. 😅

  • You can only control you and your choices. You can’t control business release dates or planner trend dates. Use what works for you. If it’s back to basics, then it’s back to basics for you. I’ve gone through a lot of planners myself: hobonichi cousin Avec, Erin condren, plum planner, etc. I’m back on a medium passion planner Monday start and it is basic and excellent quality and cost friendly. It’s is a balance.

    @Natalie.D@Natalie.D7 ай бұрын
  • What it really boils down to is this: What's more important? Making something pretty and showing it off on the internet? Or going with what works for YOU regardless of what anyone thinks or whether it's pretty? I personally choose the latter these days. I'm at the point where I've stopped caring about what's popular on social media because I've learned to keep tweaking what works for me so my system stays functional. I've also learned that trying to commit to one planner for any real length of time is a waste of my energy. I've come to embrace my natural tendency to planner-hop as part of my ADHD. It keeps things new and fresh for me, which makes me less likely to forget things. Is it perfect? No, of course not. But all that matters is it works for me in the present moment. When it stops working, that just means it's time to step back and figure out what will work for me going forward. Usually, that means going back to something that has worked for me before until that stops working again, then trying something else. It also means a lot of figuring out WHY something worked before and what I can do to make it work again. So, as of right now, I'm actively using up my stash of old Happy Planners at home and my stash of spiral notebooks and journals as EDCs. I haven't bought any new planners since the end of 2022, and I don't intend to buy any new ones for 2024. I have enough stickers, washi tape, and white-out to easily re-date anything that's outdated. I also like to use Frixion pens and markers because they make re-dating and re-purposing planners easy as well. Somewhere along the line, I may go back to a bullet journal or TN because I have plenty of those, too. I also have enough ring planners and inserts to last me several years if I decide to go that route. The point is, I'm determined to not buy any planner-related items until I run out of them. Then I plan to only get what I absolutely NEED. Best of luck to everyone on their planner journeys! 💖

  • 22:39 Sam, I specifically try to find a what I now call ‘ugly’ (of course they are not, it’s just a figure of speech :) planner flip throughs, my search box is filled with words ‘Filofax / hobonichi flipthrough no deco / no stickers / realistic / functional’. I love when the writing is all over the place, pages are crinkled, it’s all in one ink, instead of neat check boxes things are crossed out. These are the planners I personally aspire to, they intrigue me because they suggest that they are not the owner’s center of attention, something else in their life is, they are just support material, and it gives the planner and blogger more dimension, I feel! Such videos are so rare, I save whatever I can find in my favorites! I wonder if there’s a niche there too who you could be sharing your plain real Filofax pages with!

  • Although I’ve used Hobonichi on the past I’ve learned it’s not for me. So regardless of whether it would help me channel grow faster I didn’t get wrapped up in the buying. But one benefit of Hobonichi and others like W222 is that you don’t have to rush. You don’t have to buy in the summer. You can wait and buy at the end of the year. They remain available. Yes there’s some LE items that you can’t snag if they sell out. But there’s planners that will still be available from hobo and retailers so there’s no rush. Same with W222 and other planners as well. I actually didn’t know people setup their next year planners this early. I always saw that as a December thing. Guess I’m behind because as much as I’m excited for my 2024 planners I’m enjoying and focused on my 2023 so my setups won’t come for a while.

I mostly live in a HOBO but there are a handful of things I don’t like. I have found no matter how much I want that perfect setup it just doesn’t exist. I have to always remind myself that perfect is the enemy of good. I will say there is no harm in trying new things unless they cause stress and suck the joy out of planning which is exactly where I was stuck for several years and now I refuse to do that to myself anymore. Not easy to not obsess over another direction I could go but in the end it doesn’t help me use my planner which was the original goal, to be organized and work on goals.

  • My biggest problem is I love all the notebooks, all the planners, all the styles. But I defs have some faves. I have to ask myself, “Why am I setting this up?” when I “set up” a new planner system or journal. I think sometimes it purely and simply scratches a creativity itch. Also, I think it is something in my life that is just for me, and I can choose what and how to use whatever it is. It’s something I can, well, control, as awful as that may sound. 🥴 I have to let those moments be a hobby-type pastime…like knitting or watching sports or whatever, and then get back to using what works best at the moment. Going back to grad school gave me an excuse to add the A6 (and you know with the Original launching in English this year I can't resist that secret line!). A Weeks Mega could handle work/school/life but I decided on a separate planner for two reasons -- one, I wanted my notes and research separate, and two, I was terrified of losing those notes if I dropped or lost the Weeks which I take out of the office. I really appreciate you sharing your thought process.

I had to make a decision a few years ago to work with what you want to do, how you you want your pages to be or look. I found I was interested in the themes that the happy planner uses. I realized that this year I could spend on a hobonichi cousin and have my first official one… but then I realized I’ve enjoyed the Kinbor dupe and that there’s really no reason to be switching, unless it’s just to feel like I’m included or feel like my planner is of higher value than before. I ended up sticking with Kinbor. I got their Weeks book and an A6, and then I doubted the size of that A6 and got myself another A5 for only $17. While I was browsing, I saw that Kinbor did a bunch of Sanrio collabs last year that are really, really cute… you can have a whole Weeks book with a cover of your favorite Sanrio character. I can’t get over that, and I think I’ll buy one if they release more for 2024. I like what you’re saying about pre-Hobonichi. One of my favorite planners from school was a Michael’s brand Recollection planner that was a small, thick spiral book. The paper was nice enough, and it wasn’t tomoe river paper obviously. It was just cheap fun. I made it look like a million bucks lol. I miss that, too!

For 2024 I went with green olive just like you BUT just bought moomin and doraemon, I will repurpose the green olive, moomin will be the one and Doraemon is intended to be a xmas gift. Thank you for a chatty video!

I was so there, so much money was spent looking for the golden system and of course planner cover. Before I went down the rabbit hole I did all my planning on either a Franklin Covey or Standard Travelers Notebook. Out of the 2 my TN is my system I sold off or gave away everything else I had purchased now I have found the elusive planner peace. I do have a Hobonichi weeks I had started using but that now it's used to swatch my fountain pen inks. Sometimes many choices is not too good of a thing. Thanks for sharing your planner journey.

I always like your video, because it reminds me of my adhd and wanting to change things up, and it fights with my autistic self who wants to stick with the same thing year after year after year. I always fill up my cart with accessories to make it worth the shipping for me, from Hobonichi. I always have FOMO, but not so much this year. I was so busy trying to finish my thesis on time, that I could not be bothered too much. Just relaxing at night watching planner videos for layouts and unboxing, and falling asleep to them. It’s better than all the news channels throwing unwanted content at me.

Ordered from there website last year TWICE during the release I used nothing. Realistically I should only purchase A6 item because I’ll actually use them. I’m going to be in a Midori Hibino 2 pages on 1 day A6 and my pocket rings everything else will be specifically for commonplacing

I think it’s great that there are so many choices so I can try new things and see what works for me. And the great thing is that I’m using my planners and my journals and I’m staying organised and I’m getting my thoughts out on (beautiful Tomoe River) paper.

For 2024 - I've simplified to inserts I've made that have the month, a few different layouts for monthly notes/collections (1 lined page, 1 cornel notes page, 1 mind map page etc) followed by a week on two pages. It feels simple and right for the time being. I also am adding a half letter levenger notebook for braindumps where I want a bigger page. Hoping this works well for me as normally by March I am wanting something different.

  • I was a bullet journaler for many years - around whenever Ryder Carrol's first video came out, until 2022. I didn't even know that fancy/decorative spreads were a thing until recently! I started getting into Planner KZhead in January this year - and was surprised to find out I was way behind. Specifically, I realized pretty quickly that I wanted a Sterling Ink Common Planner but of course that ship had sailed. I pre-ordered for 2024 in July and it felt super weird! That and my 2024 Hobo Weeks are still in the packages and will stay there until it's time to start using them. I want that new excited feeling post-Christmas! I'm currently in a Cousin and a Weeks which are great. The main reasons I can't go back to cheap Target planners (which I otherwise was very happy with) are that I prefer Monday start and for weekend days to be the same size as weekdays. I am enjoying the quality paper and fun features of my Hobonichi planners though!

  • Say it sister! I'm almost ready to go back to a Trapper Keeper and a Hallmark store pocket monthly for my purse. Simpler times. Right now I think that for 2024 I'm going to use a Sterling Ink B6 monthly with a plain grid notebook for a running to-do list. While I do want a dated monthly to track events and things that are date-specific, I've learned time and time again I don't need a timed weekly, or much of a weekly at all, and I do a different amount of things on different days so I don't need a fixed dated daily. More than anything I need task lists and flexibility. What chores do I need to find time for in the coming week? What supplies will I need when I next go to Sam's Club? What do I need to pack when I visit my parents next weekend? I do think everyone should commit to not making ANY purchases until they assess what their needs are for the coming year. My need is lists and tasks. Notebook it is.

I’ve been using their planners/notebooks all year with stickers and stuff and had no issues with them holding up. They slide into slde flaps and would easily last for a month. Alternatively, I've used a single one to manage all the details of a short term complex project. I've been a Franklin Covey user since 2000, and I was Filofax for about 15 years before that. I have quite a few beautiful covers and of course, 14000 beautiful notebooks, many of which I'm saving for best.... What is that about, exactly?? I know this is weird, but my fear is....what if I die next year and I've lost my chance to use my beloved rings? As I say, it's been a difficult time, and it's left me a bit loopy til I get my equilibrium back.

  • That’s why I don’t buy a moleskine planner because the monthly squares are worthless. I need the monthly squares to be functional. Also I really like the graph pages in my planners. It’s one of the main things I don’t like about the weeks. I don’t care for the blank left hand side. I haven’t bought a weeks this year for an on the go planner - I went with an a6 instead. But then I miss the weekly pages. So I might add the weekly supplement but it’s vertical and smaller so I’m still thinking about that. Honestly sterling ink now makes almost anything you could want in almost any size and it’s all Tomoe River graph paper. She is really covering the whole planner schizoid world. I bought some of her new PU leather booklet planners in a few sizes as well as hobonichi day free in a couple of sizes. So I’m covered even though I miss those cute weeks covers. But can I justify buying the weeks just for the cute cover? Well we all know the answer to that - Right! Personally I think we are all crazy. But again a planner has to work and feel comfortable to the user. Good luck with the struggle. We know it’s real. HaHa.

I get far too precious with how I use it. Layout has to look good, with my fountain pen, stickers, etc. Don't get me wrong, I adore my Cousin. 100% but I don't like how pretentious I can get with it. There are times I just want to go back to the simplicity of the bullet journal. I had a great system with my bujo and it was so simple (and not so pricey... a $14 book vs. $65... 😵). I love to look back through my Cousin, I guess I need to figure out how to not feel so precious with it. At the end of the day, it is a book with paper. I make it more than that and that is purely on me... I do have my Avec for 2024 and I have it ready to go, but sheesh, sometimes I wonder if going bujo would have been better.... good luck, friend. On one hand, I am thankful for the choices because some of those have put me close to my ideal planner, on the other hand, it is overwhelming the number of planners that have cropped up. I do think the market is saturated or close to it, because one shop has decided to hold off on offering anymore planners or notebooks next year, and I get that, as a shop you don’t want to invest money you may not get back. If we did not have so many choices I think we’d make what is available work.
