Henri used to babysit me and my brother when we lived in Helsinki in the late 1970s (we were good friends with his wife Erja's family). I remember getting the call in 1986 that he had been killed. It was just so sad. I'm really glad he's still remembered. He really was an amazing talent.
The drive by Toivonen in 1986 Monte Carlo Rally has to be THE best drives in motorsport history. It is simply incredible,he was not human that night on the Col de Turini. A legend gone too soon. R.I.P Henri and Sergio.
@Mr.Dinoface Röhrl also said this: "Henri was crazy fast, faster than I could ever go". I thin this is the highest form of compliment coming from one of tje greatest rally drivers.
Definitely NOT the best drive in motorsport history. Rohrls win in Sanremo in '83 in a massively inferior 2wd car against the Audi's was better by far...
@@bugattieb110ss What? Röhrl didn't win the Sanremo Rally in 1983,Markku Alen did,Röhrl was second,Attilio Bettega was third. It was an all Lancia podium.
@@kadasrichard yep. Never forget those Group B Legend Cars.
@@bugattieb110ss yes. But Lancia also better.
Probably one of the best video presentations I've ever had the pleasure of watching on KZhead, nothing further to say....
I strongly agree. This video didn't even need narration, those brief info texts were enough. And I also really liked the way this film cut - focusing on Henri's dedication and skills instead of speculating and dwelling on the tragic accident that ended Henri's and Sergio's lives far too early. There are good documentaries and accident investigation films about the crash, but this was truly a tribute!
@Eamo L Tervetuloa
As usual amjayes
In fact, an incredible good Video ! R.I.P. Henry & Sergio....there're many Rallye Fans all over the world who will never forget you !
its like 1 hour i got to take time for this but im sure it will be worth it
Having driven the Col de Turini in the dry, it is hard to imagine driving those roads flat out with 600 hp with snow and ice across the road... at night. Absolute respect!
@evans Electric... We are mortals... We are not able to feed our families; no matter what conditions are We facing right there and the chosen one piece to fight with, even without deflected chasis. Eventhough he, (the champion) pushed when he feel comfy in those conditions like... There's no tomorrow. And one last thing... They seat, the start, the make the first mile and now... You are the one in charge to "correct" the engineering solution as your feelings keep on spreading on the present that your are enjoying... And you are about to keep coming... "official team"
It is impossible.
@@odonloraque6408 Toivonen was right.
@@ghostridertom its possible mathematically.
the mission seems impossible, but the Delta was probably the most consistent and predictable Group B car there was.
I m astonished with this video.. I ve been following WRC for 38 years...and have seen hundreds or perhaps thousands of videos, but this...THIS IS ANOTHER LEVEL. I m a Henri's fan obviously. This video contains inedits footage, images, incredible sound....Incredible Delta S4's engine sound... Montecarlo 1986 was the best and most epic rally event ever far. And it is showed like I ve never seen, including details like the last minute Henri's Turini's recce. The music is also breath taking. Incredible masterpiece !!! Thanks !! Greettings from Argentina. ❤️
Its been 36 years now since Toivonen was dead.
Impresionante video.
I saw a documentary on KZhead a couple of years ago and it covered the origins of Group B, the Start of Group B, the golden years and then the downfall. Showing all the different cars and drivers. It was about an hour and a half or two hours long. Does anyone know the documentary I mean?? I can't find it at all.
@@mrkipling2201I think I know the documentary you are talking about .I've seen it years ago but I don't know if I can find it now .
10:12 Toivonen's interview clip was missing subtitles. He said here as follows: "Tän kisan kun pääsee hengissä maaliin ja vielä sitten voittaa, niin kyllä tunne on hyvä" which would translate to "When you get to the finish alive and then win the race, that makes you feel good."
Edited the part that caused the removal of the original one. Video is still the same lenght as originally so this is the 'complete' version - you are not missing anything. We go again - more than flat-out !
Thanks for your swift re upload , keep up your incredible work ❤ Peace from Ireland 🇮🇪
Thanks ¡¡¡¡¡
i just thought that it will get removed lol
Which part was it? I have seen the "original" and it is awesome :D. Congrats to you and your fantastic editing!
I missed the 'complete' version. :^(
I had the pleasure of a few laps of the rough road test track with Henri in the Talbot, he was an amazingly talented driver.
I saw Henri in Talbot and Lancia 037 and S4..Superb.
Hi Friend, the video is beautiful! And I was very pleased to see 2 photos that I had took; are at the minute 26.08 and 26.14. They were shoot on the last hairpin before the CO of the last Stage Special, Loda - Luceram. Hanri had his hand out the window in victory! I cried in May 1986.
Wow thank you for the information! I wasn't sure from what stages the photos were from but they definitely add drama to the video. So big thanks and all the best from Finland, I added you to the list in the video description!
Piece of art
MERAVIGLIOSO FILM!!!! GRAZIE MILLE..LA LANCIA È UMA LEGGENDA.. NESSUNO MAI HA VINTO COME LA LANCIA..❤ HENRY NEL CUORE ❤️
I remember him flat out sideways in a Prodrive Porsche 911 going past my home in Ireland when I was 7 years old, I have been hard core Henri, and Porsche fanatic ever since. He had Sissu .
Even if Henri won only 3 WRC-rallyes, I somehow consider him to be the Ayrton Senna (or Jochen Rindt) of the rally world. The natural pure speed he had was incredible. He would have thrived with the way safer groupA cars.
He was my hero. At the age of 6 I had the incredible luck to see him driving his S4 on the 86 Monte Carlo Rally. I'll never forget these moments.
Wow that's amazing . I always love rally from I was a little boy but never experienced it in person .it would have been a dream come true .you are very very lucky
@@thesilentwarrior6769 Thank you very much Silent Warrior
Henri Toivonen was and still is my biggest rallying hero. I will never forget him and his achievements, true legend! Thanks for the video and cheers from Finland!
same
as an Italian, raised in the myth of the Lancia team, of the S4 queen and of Toivonen, I can only congratulate you: an exceptional video, excellently edited with only restored images! outstanding work, many compliments!
P.s:sorry for my bad english, i had to use google translate ;)
Mi adeguo a tuttl quello che è stato scritto 😂
Italians killed Henry Toivonen and Jarno Saarinen
Great documentary! Just wish you had included more at the end. Henri was vocal about how absolutely on the edge and dangerous these cars were. His last words in interview were "Today, we have driven more than the whole distance of the 1000 Lakes Rally. After 4 hours of driving- it's hard to keep up with the speed. So, with a modern car like this, it's just impossible to race here. It's physically exhausting and the brains can't keep up with it anymore." It shows even more how dedicated he was to the sport, and also why the sport had to change.
A story that is truly as wonderful as it is tragic. Henris career did not last long enough for him to become champion and he remains the biggest what-if in the history of rally. Yet in that short timespan he made such an impression on the sport and for me he is the embodiment of the rallying spirit. A fitting tribute for one of the greats. Rest in peace - Henri & Sergio
Fantastic Video of the unbelievable talented Rallye Ace Henri - however, it must be said, that he had undergone numerous very critical/ inexplicable / driving errors - which hospitalized him more then once ... and the last one tragically took his / and Sergios/ lifes - RIP Henri & Sergio - You'might be gone, but not forgotten - Chapeau !!
So true.. Henkka had so many DNFs in his career, probably due to his agressive driving style. Even his father said something similar about it, in one tv interview! Godspeed, Henkka&Sergio
I was 13 yr old, can't describe the emotions at the time. Thanks for this nostalgic hour.
Same as for my generation when we lost Ayrton, at that age you remember it as a real milestone in someones life... For a fan
Damn Son!! Henry T. + Delta S4 remastered footage + Synthwave in general, Gunship - Tech Noir in particcular. You just made 2023 for me, ready for 2024!
Excatly.
I've seen thousands of motorsport videos, but this one tops them all. Pure magic, pure emotion and pure racing
Bellissimo, Toivonen e sempre nel nostro cuore, sarà per sempre il nostro eroe. Grazie per averlo onorato con questo magnifico video e apprezzo che sia finito senza le immagini che non voglio più vedere, sei stato bravissimo.
This Film just popped up on my timeline, I went from watching "Gary Lineker" Twitter outraged videos, to being mesmerised by a moment in time that is unmatched and will never be forgotten by those who appreciated Rallying back then. Whoever made this I thank you. Group B was full of legends, Henri, Hannu, Ari, Timo, Markku, Stig, Tony Pond, Rohl, all on their day capable of being at the front in absolute monsters of cars. 86 was Henri's year, Champion no doubt. His last interview at Corsica was so ominous, talking about "your mind not being able to keep up with the car" and "crazy scary"....as I recall it. I hoped you would end it with dignity and you did it perfectly, rare in an era of hype where everything is just used for more views. 50 minutes here went by in what felt like 10. This would not be out of place with a Cinema release.
Great production and emotional quality, worth every second... Henri is a legend from the land of a thousand lakes.
@@ghostridertom yes. 36 years on he is still GOAT.
That end is so well done, it ends as quick and suprisingly like did his life. It resonates on whole different level this way and really raises the sudden end to elevated platform while also immortalising just how extraordinary talented he was. RIP
Truly a "One of a kind" driver taken far too soon. I was spectating on the Welsh rally in '86 and stood at a stage start when the news came through to a clearly distraught Hannu Mikkola that Henri had died. His reaction said it all. As for this video? It is without doubt compiled with a great deal of love and respect, and is one of the very best I have seen.
Thanks SO much for this incredible video of one of my hero's. RIP Henri & Sergio, you will never be forgotten.
When i was a little kid,i saw it happen, you are and always will be my hero Henri 🙏❤🥲
Sama täälä.
Incredible documentary. Henri Toivonen was a extremely well talented rally driver, for sure he would have won several World Championships if he had not have the terrible accident. RIP Henri and Sergio
He was the fastest rally driver in world at time, he pushing the limits! He just wasn't the lukcy ones to survive far enough to enjoy his life and bring joy for the others to enjoy his skills of driving!
Miglior pilota in assoluto!!! Autentico interprete del gruppo B. L'unico al mondo che prima di un tornante invece di scalare buttava giu una marcia.sempre nei nostri cuori HANRY

A fabulous and well deserved tribute to my biggest sporting hero ever. I started following him with the Lotus Sunbeam, I had one!! And worked in Coventry. He truly was amazing as was the Lancia Team and the car. Just caught one's attention straight away. I saw him on the RAC and have been to Corsica twice to pay my humble respects at the site of his and Sergio's sad sad death.. Thank you for a fabulous tribute to them both. I still feel that we lost someone very very special and none of us will ever know why or how. RIP Henry and Sergio. You were hugely admired. Thank you.
I had two heroes in this time period: Henry Toivonen and Stefan Bellof. RIP both of them.
Il più grande pilota di tutti tempi
Its been a long time since I've been on the edge of my seat watching anything, but thats exactly where I was today watching this piece of art. With an excellent choice of footage and music, you put together an amazing moment by moment story. Thank you so much for this video!
Me too... Nothing else, just beautiful to look at
Two massive legends in the world of WRC, unfortunately gone…. But certainly never forgotten! To tame the S4 was no mean feat! RIP guys.
@Darren Boston I was in Portugal, Portimao circuit. On a track day, and a guy picks up a quattro S1 Evo 1 bought in Austria... About 600_650... It is not as a Ferrari F50. Toivonen tame the tiger they give him... And asks for more
they didn't die earlier only by luck, because they didn't drive to be fast as avoiding DNFs as well. I can be fast as them if i lack love for my own life as well. Driving fast hoping for the best isn't really an achivement. Achivement is driving fast while avoiding to break the car or own life
@@ShakaZoulou77 you are a very silly person.
@@peterhammer4644 Yeah... that one is utterly a lost cause 😂
I was actually emotional after watching this masterpiece... Incredibly well put together, thank you to everyone involved with this project!
Absolutely fantastic video. The best I saw on Henri. Such a talent, cut off in his prime, and immortalised through the tragedy in Corsica. His driving brings goosebumps to my arms, the end tears to my eyes. RIP Henri and Sergio.
Unquestionably would have been regarded the best rally driver of all time had he lived. Possibly still is. Rip henri and Sergio.
For whom, not for me. I can't see someone driving fast just hoping for the best to be really a great driver. Greater driver is someone who is fast don't risk to die young neither destroys or breaks car mechanics often. kzhead.info/sun/mLOMqNmKhWeXaIE/bejne.html
A sad loss to the world of Rallying a real legend 😢
Great film. I lived this epic and crazy Rally era, the dead of Henry and Sergio was a terrible shock. For me Henry was the Ayrton of rallying.
Bellof, Villeneuve, Toivonen, Senna - geniuses who could wring the best out cars at all times but sadly crossed “the edge” one time too many….
The Delta S4 combo with Henri Toivonen was like Toyota Yaris Rally1 combo with Kalle Rovanpera, surefire in 1986, if there's a driver who was the deserving champion of that season and well the Group B, it was definitely Henri Toivonen... Rest in Peace, Group B Maestro
Thanks amjayes for making this and sharing the story of Henri at Monte 1986. As a fan, I have to offer that this brought up similar emotions to seeing Loeb win in Monte last year. The victory in the first outing of a new car for a brand he has never driven before, with a co-driver he hasn't raced with...and all that a week after finishing the most demanding race in the world. It was such an epic feat especially with the battle of the Sebs. I hope there will be a documentary made about it.
The end....This hits me just as hard as back in the day when I was a kid. I always picked the wrong one. With rally it was Henri, with F1 it was Senna and in my teens I decided that Queen was my favorite band. My taste changed and adored Nirvana and so on. On the other hand, all these hero's stay young while I start losing my hair and eyesight.
Nelson Piquet. who is the best driver. You or Senna? -Well i retired alive. Henri and Senna would be the De Cesaris's of other drivers if they didn't died being fast and suicidal drivers. kzhead.info/sun/mLOMqNmKhWeXaIE/bejne.html
Touching 🤦🏻♂️

A really great put together footage, music and respectful ending. From an avid rally enthusiast thank you for this!
Ein sensationeller Film über eine tolle Zeit, einen tollen Fahrer (und natürlich auch Beifahrer) und einen mitreißenden Sport. So etwas hat es danach nie wieder gegeben. Vielen Dank für dieses Meisterwerk.
Excellent Documentary Legend Henri was
ONE OF THE BEST GR.B VIDEOS EVER ¡¡¡¡¡
Probably the best video in the memory of the legend and most beloved Henri Toivonen... Many thanks
Takes me back to my childhood the Group B Rally era a stunning video of Henri Toivonen's rise to the Lancia Delta S4 R.I.P Henri and Sergio gone but not forgotten.
I don't remember seen these videos on tv as I wasn't born till 1987 but I do remember seen the cars a few years later but what hits me is the shear speed the drivers have to go just to get a couple of seconds to minutes as it was sad to see Henri and Sergio to lose their life on a specific corner that changed the sport forever. I nearly choked looking at the people inches away from the track's where people wanted to touch the cars risking their limbs or getting killed by a moving object this where the problem started to present itself of the danger to the public where the FIA had to do the decision to end the Group B as it was getting out of control. But this demonstration of the video highlights the life of a driver and the co-driver including the team especially the beautiful Lancia Delta S4 in all it glory
THESe film IS amazing!!!! Congratulations for the great work
Its crazy to hear in middle of a rally, top 5 and 4 of them were finns..
Clearly one of the best Clips I’ve ever seen about Group B Rallying…I’m speechless🙏
What a driver, what a video. Thank you very much.
Henri was, and always will be a legend of the sport. Certainly one of the quickest we have ever seen and possibly the very quickest. Rip Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto
Goosebumps, Simply the best of all times
Interesting note, Fiorio always speaks about Bettega's crash as a "normal" rally accident. But when he comments Henri's crash, it's usually something like this :" we try to make this sport more safe, not the fault of car, driver, or the event itself" etc. It sounds like he knows more than he is willing to say directly. It gets really strange when you consider that Lancia wanted Henri's widow to sign a paper , promising she won't hold Lancia responsible for the fatal crash.
wow that is some deep information! are you saying that lancia knew something about the car when the crash happend? And i can understand that lancia wanted the widow to sign the paper, he pushed so mutch out of that car that at one point they would not know what was possible. I dont think they knew what this car peak performence whas
@casbremer7793 I consider it likely that Lancia made some observations from the moment the car wreck was taken out of the accident area and later when they examined the remains . Remember , the local police or anybody else didn't organize any investigation. And Lancia left Corsica real quick , real quietly ... another thing I have observed is team-mate Markku Alen has ever since been more or less reluctant to talk about Toivonen Cresto accident . Of course it was traumatic for anyone to witness but also Lancia Martini team was known as a family, extremely tight knit group. I always wonder if Alen knew more but didn't feel like revealing everything because of some type of loyalty to the group and who knows , maybe Fiorio put pressure on everyone in the team not to say everything.
damn dude thats dark@@jussiuutaniemi3767
This is a masterpiece This deserves to be on Netflix as a documentary not just youtube
Thank you henri and sergio your time with us and these videos telling the storys. Gone but never forgotten ❤
Amazing 55mins of the greatest era of rallying. Imagine what the other Manufacturers thourght when Lanica rocked up with the S4,800kg & 600hp. And to Henri….it’s upsetting to watch a man describe a car that had faults but he used his utmost skill and determination to tame it,but led to untimely demise may he RIP. Group B will never die,the men & women that drove them and the cars themselves. They will live on.
Story of Henri Toivonen is so important for me and you just made a great honor for his and Sergio's lagacy. About the greatest videos on KZhead I have ever seen! That all video material etc. is not easy to collect nowadays rather than editing it like this! 😍
These videos are phenomenal, the stories are so gripping with the footage. Speaking of Monte Carlo 1966, it did remind me of one of the original Flying Finns... A similar video on Timo Makinen and the Minis would be great!
Thank you for reminding us all about Henri and Sergio. Hugely talented and determined, I thought at the time nothing would be a barrier. RIP guys. Waheguru 🙏🏽
This makes a grown man cry. Thank you for a great video presenting the greatest rally driver ever (at least for me). Henri earned his reputation as a legend - unfortunately he never got to receive the glory himself. The stage times he put in before the tragic accident are just incredible - pure magic and beautiful man and machine symbiosis.
I feel very lucky because I found and watched this video.I am 48 years old and I have seen almost everything from that golden era of rally, but this video is really amazing and one of the best. Thank you for uploading and sharing with us!!!
Even the music in this vid is awesome!! 👍😎
Sir, I have never seen a production as evocative of the era, the sport, the teams, and the crews as this ; Please accept my congratulations. I may have to have a little lie down now, that was exhausting and emotional.
Amazing, this video showed he heart toivonen had. He is world class and always will be, unfortunately his life ended far to early. I put him there with Colin mcrae with them being the 2 best drivers in my opinion.
True legend .... UNFORGETTABLE!!!
From start to finish. This video is a masterpiece.

Absolutely brilliant thank you sir. Not a single useless commentary. And you skip the tragedy that's nice. Wonderful driver. Huge respect 👍
One of those KZhead videos you want to like twice. Rest in peace Henri.
Nice documentary, wery well done and perfect soundtrack. You can feel the human side of car rallies. But when a champion tells us something, like Henri did about too long and dangerous trails, we should listen to him. Henry Toivonen have probably been the fastest rally driver ever.
Henkalla oli varmaankin kotimaanpojista raskain kaasujalka. Olisi ollut helvetin mielenkiintoista seurata touhuja A-ryhmässä kun autot olivat lähempänä toisiaan, hyvin mahdollisesti Kankkusen vitriinistä puuttuisi tänäpäivänä parikin mm-pyttyä.
SO TRUE. Respect for THE DELTA BOYS……..!

I've been seeing this video for .... maybe the 10th time in a week .... that time was fantastic; The S4 was an amazing car and the final night of1986 Monte was totally phenomenal. Toivonen's drive was pure "magidness" (contraction of magic and madness) ..... He would certainly have won the 1986 championship ..... And what about the music, which in this video is purely magic, especially for me in "The Delta Arrives" section. THANKS A LOT FOR SHARING THIS!!!!
Haven't even watched this yet but big THANK YOU already. Will watch it this evening from big screen with a glass of wine and a tear running down my cheek...
