I took the Nikon Z9 out into the Real World to test out the Auto Focus in multiple challenging situations. First there was photographing a college Basketball game, followed by capturing Bird images and two concerts. All of this happened in the first week of having the camera which is pretty crazy. So how did the Auto Focus do, does it compete with the Canon EOS R3 and Sony a1? Find out inside this video.

  • ****UPDATE**** A few people pointed out that the Z9 users manual says that if you're in 3D AF mode, by default, the stickiness level will be 3. That was interesting to see as that wasn't how it was explained to me when setting up the camera with the engineers. I reached out to the engineers with a few questions and they responded a few hours later. They did verify that in 3D the lock on tracking slider defaults to 3 and even if you raise it to 5 (which it lets you do) it's still going to be 3. I made a suggestion that they 1, don't allow you to switch it to 5 if you're in the 3D tracking mode. 2. somehow allow you to switch it to 5 and have it be more sticky. 3. explain better in the camera that it defaults and stays at 3. I also suggested moving or adding the ability to have the indicator that flickers around the outside of the frame when you take a photo, be moved closer to between the center of the frame and the edge of the frame. I said that the Sony a1 has this feature and they can check it out there to see what I am referring to. They are very open to feedback and extremely responsive....including replying to me on Christmas when I said it can wait until Monday

    • Thanks for the update, I’m glad you got that straightened out and made suggestions at minimum it needs to be explained better. It’s clear the fw still needs tweaks and from what I’m hearing there will be significant improvement coming.

    • Done Well Jared . I believe that your review was fair and worthy review. I have patiently been waiting for Nikon's mirrorless replacement of its top tier Camera. I 'm a user that came from an F5, D300 (gripped), D700 (gripped) and D3.( I still want a D4s) I stopped at D3 and D700's as these cameras for over a decade were WAR HAMMERS that were good enough. I've never had a client complain about its result from the Trinity of Lenses. That is 16-35 |f4, 24-70| 2.8 and the 70-200 VR1 (I somehow got an impeccably SHARP version of this lens). My Professional Photographer friend would always use it for REALLY important gigs. I bought the z50 Kit and the Z 24-70 | 2.8 s as a start to build the Z Trinity. I tried a friend's Z 6 and was not convinced this was camera for me. I decided to wait and I am glad I did. Kudos to Nikon to keep pressing on! Viva La Nikon!

    • Also Noted is that the Nikon needs the Best Delkin Black camera card and for fasted Processing speed and writing, 30 FPS. you need the fastest lens to keep up, 20 FPS is more then plenty out of any Camera, unless you shoot JoeY b, and are waiting for a Pulse

  • It's really cool to see camera tech progress and it's good to see a legendary company like Nikon get back in the game, especially at the price point they set for the Z9, which I'm sure the real world review will factor in.

  • So far so good with the Z9. Like all cameras, there will be things you like, things you don't and things you hope they can change. But to get to use the camera in the first week of having it to shoot sports, music and birds, is awesome. Don't forget to check out the RAW files and FULL RES exported jpegs.

    • @@Whatsgoodmydude2222 Tony and Chelsea seem to be entrepreneurs more than photographers. They did not setup the R3 autofocus properly for birds in flight. Gordon Laing got far better results shooting birds with an R5 than T&C got with the R3. If you shoot Canon, you know the AF will find a bird quicker than you can! So why would you choose a stupid little cluster of AF points and try to put them over a bird when leaving the detection purely to the camera, it would grab the bird's eye instantly (before you could possibly place the points over the bird)? Look at how Jared shoots an actual basketball game and not 2 friends jumping around like chimpanzees. I take T&C reviews with a grain of salt. Another one: I remember Tony once saying he generally leaves AF settings at factory defaults as it generally doesn't make much difference. Utter BS. It makes all the difference in the world.

    • @kulmmii That's your opinion. Many people don't need or give a stuff about high MP. Let's be honest, we spend more time downsizing images for end use, not wishing we had more MP. I'd take an R3 any day of the week over a Z9. Not sure about the A1 though, that's superior to the Z9.

      @cooloox@cooloox2 жыл бұрын
    • @@cooloox of course you have not head about those high efficiency Raw files Nikon now has. I honestly believe these will be used by many Nikon togs. I am super happy Nikon did not choose to go the High ISO as the D5 and D6 are indeed 'Kings of the Dark' Nikon seemed to getting back to the well rounded camera like the D3 was as you were able to shoot anything with it. The Canon R5 is that type of camera for Canon. The Z9 will be that in Between camera although pricier than the R5, its capability to go down to iso 32, 64 and using 1.2 lenses in broad daylight will be a wedding/event photogs dream.

We don't have any Canon or Sony images to compare, but these are just tremendous looking images. Maybe the best I have seen on your site. Ever? Gorgeous in each situation. Except the birding. Not the camera's fault. Just good af testing images. But, the rest? Sweet.

  • I appreciate your objective views on the camera. One thing I’ll mention is that while you prefer the very fast lenses, and they are incredible, two things preclude them for many of us: they’re huge and very expensive. Qualitatively, they’re not strikingly better than their 1.8 counterparts. Your images were excellent and I would be proud to say I’d taken those shots (especially the concert shots) if they were mine. Only photogeeks will pixel peep those images taken in extremely difficult lighting situations. Would I like the Z9 to be in the form factor of a Z7? Yes as I’ve become accustomed to lighter cameras now, but I will enjoy my Z9 as I’ve become frustrated more and more with the way my Z7 handles low-light focusing situations, but love the images I can get from it. Again, remember your audience. Not all of us want gigantic, expensive 1.2 glass. Nikon’s alternatives are incredible, and better than the F lenses we took for granted a decade or two ago.

  • Thanks for this video, Jared. Nice to see the viewfinder view on these. I've shot D850 since it was introduced, and have regularly told people in the last two years that, were I starting fresh, I'd probably be shooting Sony. But, too deep into F glass. So, I've been waiting for a mirrorless that could do everything that a D850 could do and more. This is it! Sure, the Sony and Canon outperform it in autofocus, as they've been doing this longer (Canon has had great autofocus well before mirrorless, and Sony has only done mirrorless). But, I finally feel that Nikon has made an improvement on the D850, and the benefits of mirrorless (WYSIWYG view, silent shooting, better autofocus in both stills and hugely better in video), are finally here for those of us who don't have the money to jump systems every time a competitor makes an improvement!

    • i look at history and Nikon couldnt fix this in their previous Z cameras. the A1 was released months ahead and Nikon had all the time to use it as a benchmark. if they couln't fix it now, I doubt they can fix it. the problem is not hardware... the Z9 has a good hardware but i think the software side is the problem i.e. Nikon's software engineers. I also, think the AF points display is based on predictive algo and that's why it's jumping around. the actual AF lock might be a little better. problem is now that Jarod has mentioned this, everyone will try to test, compare and start reporting stuff even if its minute.

      @vignesk6669@vignesk66692 жыл бұрын
    • @@vignesk6669 I believe Nikon engineers will adjust the lock on time so the focus will not jump around. This seems to be a small issue and nikon will come up with a user-friendly setting to adjust the lock on time with a firmware update. I had a similar issue with another body and they addressed this with firmware. The only issue I had with Nikon focusing were subjects coming toward the camera or focusing on the eye through a face mask.

  • The Nikon seems lighting fast to focus, but not as accurate and sticky. Definitely some positives to take away though. Considering the package being $1000 less than the Sony and $500 less than the Canon (with a substantial resolution advantage), it would be a tough call for someone buying into a new lens mount. If I hadn't bought an R5 a year ago, this would be in my bag, even if it is a half step behind in accuracy (albeit possibly a quarter step up in speed).

  • All 3 flagship cameras are awesome on their own way. And obviously can't go wrong with either one. But if I'm going to start from scratch and pick a system, I'd pick the Nikon Z9 now. I think the Z9 is the first ever camera that is both a photo and video camera. Both R3 and A1 are photo camera first, video camera second. Z9 does not compromises on either photo or video area. Also, for the price.,Z9 is slightly cheaper for the amount features Nikon packed in it, integrated battery grip, no mechanical shutter, dual CF express slots, etc. Also if that High Efficiency RAW* comes out as it is hyped to be then it's another plus for the Nikon system. No need to worry about shooting how many shots as there will be no mechanical shutter actuations to worry about and those RAW files will be half the size of normal RAW files but still retain all the detail.

I think that we still need to compare the Z7ii sensor Vs the Z9 as the camera has a double AA filter... that might affect sharpness which is welcomed in portraiture but not in wildlife or landscape or architecture or pretty much any other type of photography. However from an initial test, I was analysing a few shots done with a 500mm F/4 lens + Z9 and there are details missing there. So this initial layering was described (erroneously) as a double low-pass filter initially, then rectified later. But something does look quite different from the D850 in terms of details.
