When the Nikon Z9 mirrorless full-frame camera was announced, the feature-set and technology surpassed Nikon's flagship DSLR, the D6 in almost every way. It was also released at a significantly lower price point. In this episode, Dave and Evelyn explore if there are still any competitive advantages to the Nikon D6 vs. Z9.

  • I jumped out at the D5. Our studio had mirrorless M43 Lumix cameras for video and for reasons I picked one of them up for a photo shoot, processed the files, passed them on to the designers and had good feedback. Not long later I had an Olympus E-m1 mark ii and have only looked back since the Z9 was released, but now I am hooked on the ability to shoot one handed, or completely disregard the reciprocal rule, and it's only gotten better with the OM-1. 'Can you share half resolution files and we'll pick whatever ones our designers need at full res' is something I still get with the smaller sensor - luxuriant headroom.

    • I'd have or own both and be using both for months if they just talked to each other better or Nikon kept the WT-6 port. I can't copy and paste my Wifi/FTP or settings, so I want two D6's and two WT-6A attached to both, both camera's are synched to GPS clocks and Photo Mechanic, etc., etc. Having two completely different camera's is not something I want to do anymore, which is why I basically gave away my 6 month old D850 and 9FPS kit that cost me $4200 for only $2000 cash. Yet I got an open box USA warranty D6 for $4600 with taxes and Fedex 2 Day Air shipping. I can't get a Z9 without asking for a favor and I'd be done for if they found out I was just selling them off for a profit. So I'll probably buy a true flagship if they every release another one made in Japan more for photojournalist's, I'd probably buy one. For now or the next few years...the D6 is exactly what I know and love! I'm in love with my current kit! www.pjbypj.com

  • Great video, however, to me the Z9 has too many features I would never use. I mainly only shoot landscapes and portraits. High ISO performance is also a factor and feature I need. 120 fps will appeal to a niche of photographers, not to me. I’ll always pick the D6 in every case. I also have a D780 which gives me mirrorless features of the Z series.

  • I have both the D6 and the Z9 and have been taking both to games for the past couple months. The image quality of the D6 in low lit / bad lit high school fields and gyms can't be compared. The z9 will show up a surprising amount of noise at ISO 2000 and above. the problem with that is it makes fixing any issues in the image a lot harder than images you get from the Z9. As for eye tracking, it can actually make your life harder when you have several individuals moving erratically in the frame and the focus tends to jump around away from your desired subject. I love my Z9 but will still bring my D6 along for these situations.

    • Interesting. I have a D6 too (along with my D850) and expect my first mirrorless body may well be the Z9. But as a wildlife shooter primarily, your observation about the low light capability of the D6 dovetails with mine. As I frequently shoot in conditions where I’m struggling with exposure and higher ISOs, I have been extremely pleased with the results I’ve had with it for the last year and a half. I feel that this 21 MP camera will serve me for years to come as I also eventually break into the mirrorless world.

    • @@SanGioSports Yes, it’s a 45 MP camera, there’s noise. But a “surprising amount of noise at ISO 2000 and above”? That’s just not true. SIGNIFICANT grain starts at about 6400. • This is an excellent comparison of the D5s (late 2018) and Z9 (late 2021). Just as the F5 was iconic and the F6 was effectively DOA, the D5 was the last Nikon high-speed flagship DSLR and the D6 was also effectively DOA. It took three years after the F6 for release of the D3, just as it took three years from when the D6 should have been released for the Z9. In both cases, the shift was needed to "catch up", first to Canon and now to Sony. Thankfully, both succeeded in catching up technologically, so hopefully this puts Nikon in a good position for the rest of the decade.

    @UnconventionalReasoning@UnconventionalReasoning2 жыл бұрын
    • Exactly, agree 100% and that’s okay! The F6 and D6 are both awesome. Both the best at what they do, I’m happy with the comparison and the cameras. Both are awesome! The D850 and D5 are awesome as well. The Z9 lacks the WT-6 port, so there’s that, and the D6 holds about 2/3rds a stop advantage in low light. I can absolutely get images off my D6 way faster than you can a D850/Z9, with the WT-6A. Probably around the same amount of users/buyers want an D7 as would want an F-7. It is a small amount, maybe only a couple thousand people, 3-4K? Nikon corporation sold less D6’s than D5’s and sold less copies of the F6 than they did the F5, so it’s understandable the D6 might be the end. I just hope Nikon does either release a D7 or they release a Firmware upgrade or two to keep the D6 fresh? I dunno; but either way people like myself…will always love the F6/D6 and we’ll always be happy to have and shoot with one. Regardless of whether or not it’s a popular decision, lol.

  • Was using a D850 / D500 combination, but have replaced the D850 (now my backup) with a Z9. I mainly shoot landscapes/seascapes/cityscapes/nature (macro, so love built in focus stacking)/wildlife especially birds then other miscellaneous stuff. Main reasons for buying the Z9: AF system, ibis, evf, can use my newer f-mount glass and shutter(less) speed. My main issue is lack of reasonably priced telephotos like the announced, with no date, 200-600mm f/?. So far, I am very happy with the Z9, but there is a bit of a learning curve over the D850. FWIW: Yes the D6 is, and should be, much better in low light situations given the light gathering ability of the bigger sensor elements, but the trade off with the Z9 is ability to capture much more detail in normal light situations and to "see" in low light situations using the evf.

  • You guys almost asked and got to the answer I was looking for, but unfortunately the conversation never got there with Rob. So I'll pose the question to you folks or anyone here. If we take similar megapixel count sensors (D850 vs Z9) the question is less the high ISO performance, than highlight clipping in my book. I've yet to compare the two cameras side to side with challenging subjects (bright white plumage next to dark feathers) but have found after using the Z9 for a month that even photographing something like a Mandarin Duck in the last hours of light that the Z9 will clip the highlights unless the image is underexposed 1/2 to a full stop. I don't remember having that issue with a similar megapixel D850 sensor (but did in the D500). So while the Z9 excels in so many ways, I wonder what others here (assuming they have the camera) are finding in comparing it to the D850. As a predominant wildlife/action - dance/sports photographer and side portraits/landscape and rare astrophotography, the Z9 is going to be the Nikon camera I shoot with. Not only do you have the advantage of exposure, composition, and AF eye detection, but edge to edge coverage. As for battery life - carry a power brick and charge in camera - try that with the D6. ;-)

At iso 6400 my Z6II usually doesn't need much noise reduction in post. My Z7II on the other hand requires much more noise reduction in post and at 45 megapixels this is very time consuming. Switching camera systems is a big decision to make for several reasons, price for one but functionality even more so. I really like the A9 II however given the option I would go Nikon Z9 all the way. The higher res is nice of course and it has a very capable AF system that holds it's own with any of it's competitors. The obvious Sony model to compare is the A1. Either way switching to a different system is a big decision. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching.

  • Good discussion. When you look at the transition from film to digital you can see the camera makers just shoehorned a CCD into what was the film plane and pressure pad. Initially they didn't change any of the legacy mechanical/opticals systems that were designed for film over the 20th century. Now we are finally getting to the point where the designers have the necessary technology to reinvent the rest of the camera surrounding the digital sensor, and the sensor tech is just getting superior in responsiveness as well. So, yes the mirrorless flagships are superior to the end of line DSLR flagships for sure. Its only taken twenty years! (that's too long - I think a couple of the Japanese makers have been a bit lazy).

    • Except some Nikon f-mount lenses perform better than their newer mirrorless counterparts. For instance the Nikon 500mm FL and 800mm FL are both sharper than the two new S-line “super-tele” lenses (the 800pf and 400mm f/2.8 S)! The Nikon 28mm f/1.4E puts the Nikon 24mm f/1.8 S to shame. It’s incredibly sharp edge to edge at f/2.8-f/4 and definitely it still competes for IQ. If you don’t believe my claims you should look at all of the MTF charts. While I do believe optical engineers have a far easier time designing lenses for a larger mount…I’m not sure how mirrorless is better. They said it was lighter, but the Z9 is not that much lighter or smaller than her D5/D6. Of course the Z9 is sold out and hard to find, the D850 was sold out for a long time. It’s like Nikon combined the D6 and D850 and I can see why it’s a winning formula for Nikon. But I didn’t see much a technological gain while using it. In fact I missed my D6 after about a half hour. But I admittedly have CTE symptoms from traumatic brain injuries/concussions. So I am not a fan of the EVF in general. I will say the 30fps and 120fps modes can absolutely be a game changer. In that regard…I absolutely see the advantages. You can now surely get images that were previously hard to get, like ball on bat in baseball or that perfect wing position for wildlife photography, etc., etc! I’m not saying mirrorless isn’t better or newer technology but as far as RAW imagery is concerned…doubt you’ll see any improvement if you’re coming from a D850 or D810 type camera. In fact the Z7 was sorta a letdown for Nikon, they’ve sold far fewer than they imagined.

He said he paid $500 for it. I got to checking on fleabay where they sell for around $1000. In my mind a D3 is cheaper than a lot of "starter" cameras and a whole lot better. Except for video. So yeah, that's why I'm still waiting for my Z9. I'm just chapped raw because most of the camera stores give priority to NPS members and put them ahead of the line. I think it's unethical as hell and I told the B&H people that the Z9 is my last order with them. From now on I'm buying from Best Buy or Amazon. I'm just fed up with the waiting game. Stating higher resolution cameras having more noise than lower resolution ones is a little bit disingenuous, you can't compare a 20mp file and a 45mp one at 100% size because the magnification of the bigger file will show of course show more noise (assuming the sensors are of similar generations).

Obviously all the moving parts like the mode dial, buttons, battery compartment and the Memory card area. Has anyone thought about the durability of the computer itself. The camera menu has a thermal cutoff (what should one read into that?). Will Heat cause the camera to fail catastrophically within a similar amount of time where a shutter would be replaced? Or what is the expected lifespan of the viewfinder? After all that part will be working quite a lot in the hands of a professional.

    • The electronics themselves are the weak point. I think we've all had an issue or two with the DSLRs since their inception which are usually related to the electronics. Warranties are what they are, but when they stop working, there is rarely any coaxing them back into functionality. With the mirrorless having even more electronics, plus new unproven lenses, I'd be a hard sell on a z9 just yet. I do like the features though. I'm simply too invested in F mount and they do everything I want them to and some. Not really sure why I'd switch. If I was just getting into photography, I don't think it'd be bad to go mirrorless since there's no existing investment. However, there are a lot of 5-8 year old Nikon DSLRs that take absolutely amazing photos for bargain basement prices right now.

I loved my D6 but the Z9 is next level.

    @bfqywqd@bfqywqd2 жыл бұрын
    • How so or why? I felt the opposite and still do, I won't put down the Z9 or say anything stupid, the Z9 is amazing. I'm just not about to stare at a little TV screen for more than 30min to an hour and I often have multiple (3-4) assignments or breaking news stories a day. I can't live without my WT-6A and the Z9 is not a replacement nor can it do what the D6 and WT-6A can do and that alone is one reason for me not to switch. Good on Nikon to include all these new technologies but they could've kept the WT-5/6 port that other flagships all can take. I've been using the WT-5A and WT-6A since 2012 and the Nikon D4. The D6 costs more, is made in Japan and is absolutely a step above build quality or finish wise. I'm not saying this to dissmiss the Z9 or say it's not a tank or awesome pro-grade camera, because I've held and used the Z9. It's awesome, feels great and is amazing in most ways, I just see it, Nikon cut a few little corners here and there and it shows to me, a flagship user for 25 years. The F6 and D6 are legends and the D6 is awesome! I absolutely love it and prefer it to the Z9. All day, everyday, I'll take D6 or even D850 over a Z9. Not sure if it's all the EVF that bother's me or not, but it's enough of a reason to make me NOT want one! Guess I'll buy Nikon D6's or Canon 1Dx Mark III if I ever need video capabilities. I almost bought a Canon 1Dx Mark II and Canon 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x TC lens for only $7000! That was an incredible deal from a friend and collegue, so I could easily switch now in 2022 to Canon and SAVE $$$! Canon used is selling for much less than comparable NIkon gear. The 180-400FL alone is impossible to buy new and is $8,500 new alone. A D5 or D6 is an additional $2800-$6500 and my 500FL is worth $7,000 alone used. So I'm willing to upgrade and switch to Canon if and when I want to! Obviously Canon DSLR AF is a step behind, but it's still awesome and great once you figure out the best use case or set it up for you and your needs! What does the Z9 do for you that the D6 was failing at?

    • @@bfqywqd That’s awesome and so happy for you! I didn’t share that unfortunately I have and live with PTSD, CTE from TBI’s. I have all ten or so symptoms of CTE, however unfortunately they only confirm 100% once they study or look at you brain. So I’m working on finding the best experts and plan to try to get into some studies. There is some hope that working backwards from MRI’s of people who had them younger in life, and then after they died. Most brain donations so far have come from suicides of NFL players and military veterans. So far nearly 100% of brains tested, of donors who were suspected of having CTE…tested positive. So this is how we know how destructive this illness is. The brain was not designed for thousands of blows to the head. Or hundreds of concussions, over-pressure from explosions, I’ve fallen from 12ft onto my back and head, hit my head on a rock , my head split open! Twelve staples to put it back together. I’ve been in fights were 100 punches were taken to my head, I played tackle football from age 7-18 years old. So 11 years of countless blows to the head. So today I live with light sensitivity issues, I lose things I just had, I’m always looking for things, I forget why I walked into the kitchen for no reason. The worst though is the headaches, sometimes they feel like a laser beam from hell hit you right in your brain. So intense and so painful, sounds and light are extremely bothersome. It’s so bad you’d rather be dead! They can last for days! I have impulse control issues at times, suicidal thoughts, although I am 100% sure I’d never act on them. At least not at this point, I have a beautiful “super-model” and extremely smart Angel of a daughter, she’s 12 years old. I raised her the first years of her life on my own, after just returning from Afghanistan! My wife and I lost her brother, my brother in law to a heroin overdose. I didn’t know at the time but I guess she helped him buy what killed him. So I raised my daughter while my ex-wife went to rehab for over a year or two? It was a long time until she got 50/50 custody back. So we’re incredibly close and I’d never do that to her. However unfortunately I am going to have a rough rest of my short life. I’m 35 years old and I’m living with my parents because I need help at times. They help me also with my daughter. I can’t or choose not t drive anymore due to the light sensitivity. So for me an EVF gets really annoying or old fast! Plus I just had bad experiences with the Z6, Z6 II and Z9! I felt the Z6’s were nowhere near my D5/D6. The lag or herky-jerky EVF at 12fps was a joke! The Z9 is absolutely a step down, a small step down but nonetheless feels slightly cheaper than the D6! You can argue I’m wrong all you want but I know I’m right. Nikon cut a few corners on the Z9 and who cares if it means $5500 is the price! That’s a great deal for what you get! I’m not here to put the Z9 down or say it’s a bad camera. It’s not, it’s awesome! I’ll just keep my D6’s because I love them every but as much as you love your Z9!

If you can’t crop with your feet to get an acceptable image at 20mp you won’t at 45 either. The photographer makes the shot not the camera. I have seen talented photographers use a d2xs and a 200mm f4 from 1983, decimate all. Clients never print above 11x17 who cares about 400000MP. The year long editing workflow is time I could be spending out doing what I love. I was happy with 10MP and iso3200 when the d300 was released. I’m happy now with 20MP and iso12800. I was happy with 5fps at the race track. I mean come on where does it end. EVF feels like a digital appendage has been strapped to me. @ronaldsand3000@ronaldsand30002 жыл бұрын
    • I disagree. The Z9 definitely has major advantages in terms of frames per second. However the D6 has its advantages too, such as wireless transfer ability with the optional WT-6A as well as the D6 is a good 2/3rd of stop better at higher ISO. The D6 AF system is unbelievably good, it’s near 100% accurate. I shot a few 40-60 images bursts the other day of a firefighting tanker aircraft performing a “phos-chek” or retardant drop. Both my D5 and D6 had a near 100% hit rate using Dynamic 9-point AF mode. I’ve used the Z9, I’m an NPS member and I’m definitely going to buy a Z9 soon. However if you’re like me and you’re really good or well practiced with the AF joystick and D5/D6 AF system…it’s hard to miss. So although I believe portrait and “people” photographers will gain game changing face and eye tracking, sports/action/wildlife photographers will see less gains. The Z9 sometimes picked the wrong player or subject, and or missed shots that I felt my D6 would never have missed. Part of that is my eye hand and brain coordination, but the other part is just how amazing the D6’s AF system is. If you’re someone who likes manual control of where you want your AF points or you like to pick your subject in your own, the Z9 takes getting used to. I don’t doubt the Z9 is any less capable AF wise and it’s arguably much more advanced than the D6’s AF system. I just think sports/action/wildlife photographers will see less of real life tangible difference in image quality between D6 or Z9 images. I often have to check my metadata to see if the image I’m looking at was taken with my D5/D6 or D850. I literally can’t see the difference between the 21mp and 46mp images. At least not unless you make huge prints or need to crop a lot. I’m fortunate in that I have all of the best F-mount glass and can cover from 14mm-1050mm with just 4-5 lenses. Anyways I’m looking forward to the day when I can finally get my own Z9, but I’m also completely content with my current D5/D6/D850 setup.

    @dct124@dct124 Жыл бұрын
  • The answer to your question, IMO, is, "yes". But that ignores the question if Z glass is so much better that it killed the F mount for me. My answer to that already was, "yes". It's not so much about pure "sharpness" (that is better in the Z glass), but chromatic aberration (CA) and other side-effects of complex optics that have been addressed really well. I kept a few lenses with a very special feel and the FTZ adapter, but that's it. These lenses are not raising the "art" qualities of my shots anyway (neither do Z lenses). But the absence of especially CA made me jump from the D bandwagon onto the Z one. As to low light, color space and dynamic range, the Z 7 and 9 cameras do an incredible job but "high ISO" can be bit limited - better in the D and Z 6. You need to go to Z 6(ii) to match the D6 (see Ricci Chera). As to MP and sharpness, before me moving to Z 7 and later to Z 7ii, I used to hold the position that about 24MP was the sweet spot. If you think it isn't good enough, then run your shots through Topaz's GigaPixel AI. And you'll be surprised about the impact of raw processing done one or another way. We should not forget that MP are an area unit and human perception follows linear units. That's why we have been expressing film and lens resolution in "linePairs per millimeter" already 50 years ago. If we compare detail resolution (*) between different MP cameras, at the same aspect ratio, we should compare one side of the sensor of each. What has two times the detail resolution of 24MP - 6,000*4,000? That's linearly 12,000*8,000=96MP (ceteris paribus **). When the aspect ration differs, I would compare diagonal resolution. And, Dave, as you want to hear the shutter fire, because we do not want to have vibration in the camera, maybe you can ask Nikon through an RfC for an option to play shutter noise into your in-ear Bluetooth headphone. As to getting the fastest AF, we should remind ourselves to switch the AF assist light off when we do not need it. (*) I distinguish detail resolution from gradation resolution (including color space and dynamic range) (**) Assuming lenses can resolve both. Assuming both have fuzzy filter (***) or both have not. (***) Fuzzy filter is what I call an anti-aliasing (AA) filter or a low pass filter.

My guess for example is that it takes photos like doing time-lapse when the sensor/viewfine/rear screen is always on. That is, the it takes one photo let say every 30 second. Resulting in a completely unrealistic use, as it would mean handholding the camera at eye level for 6 hours continously.

  • "Is the Nikon Z9 the D6 Killer?" -- Yes but not yet: There are so many many professional shops and rental agencies have vast quantities of D6/D5 and accessories they use at venues like the Olympics, World Cup, Sports events and the like and these folk will not just change -- even if the could. Production and supply chain delays resulting from the vast number of preorders of the Z9 mean that casual buyers are likely to have to wait until 2023 for orders placed today to arrive. I know this because my 2nd Z9 ordered in October via NPS arrived last week. Then we have the 400/2.8 TC and the 600 [?] S-line lenses. Yes I can confirm that all AF-S lenses work perfectly on the Z9 via the FTZII but there are performance improvements when using the Z S-line versions. I shot a pre-release Z 400/2.8 TC S-line earlier this week and, while it is 22mm longer, it is much lighter, has faster/smoother/quieter AF, with the internal TC giving 560/4.0 more flexible, and the images seem sharper when shot on my Z9 than the AF-S 400/2.8E-FL version. This is 100% true for the Z 70-200/2.8 -vs- AF-S 70-200/2.8E-FL - both Focal'd and AF-fine tuned to their ideal sharpness. Video -- I largely ignore this category but recently shot both 8k, 4k 120fps and 120 fps burst which I then converted into a vid and it could not have been easier. The widely anticipated "big" firmware upgrade anticipated for later on in 2022 it is expected to bring large improvements for both still and video shooters and these types of improvement are going to consider. Shoot a Z9 at the same resolution as a D6 and you will find only 1/2 stop difference -- just work out how to do this on a Z9 or do it later in LRC. For shooting scenes in theatres surely you are using gear that generate 16-bit colour depth files -- H or P1 being the top choices. No Full-frame camera provides a dynamic range beyond 12-stops at their base ISOs, and this drops considerably as the ISO used is increased. With the Z9 shooting at 20 fps you can very easily perform a 5 or 7 shot bracket (with 2 stops betweens shots). Since receiving my first 2 Z9s (and already owning a Z7) I have sold all bar 2 of my DSLR bodies (both D850s) -- that is 7 DSLRs sold (including one D5) and most of the older lenses that I have not obtained a Z S-line equivalents - so 400/2.8GVRII and 600/4.0GVRII. I will be selling the F-mount 14-24/2.8, 24-70E-FL and 70-200E-FL. Where the decision is harder are the 200/2.0GVRII and 300/2.8GVRII; the large number of shorter F/1.4 primes and specialist PC-E lenses and my OTUS and 2 Sigma Art lenses all of which are great but rarely used for my current wildlife focus. The FTZ and FTZII are truly marvelous - but as noted I do advocate checking AF-accuracy with FoCal to see if there could be sharpness improvements from tiny AF-fine tune tweaks.

  • Excellent battery life, huge buffer depth/fast clearing, weather sealing, robustness/build quality, good available glass, replacement bodies, no rolling shutter, no banding, useable file sizes for quick transfer (would be nice to be able to chose 45 or 24mp in camera full raw as an option), instant start up time (z9 looks good for this), 100% reliability, and excellent ergonomics - this is what I need in a pro sports camera no mirrorless camera ticks these boxes, fancy auto focus modes are nice to have but the other are essential and non negotiable if you want $4500 of my money

  • Hey kids, the Z9 is not the killer of the D6. Not here and not in any place in the world when it comes to action shooting in autofocus tracking. I have been shooting actions including BIF my whole life since the Nikon F all the way to the Z9, which I have one and the Nikkor Z 800 PF and all the Nikkor Super telephoto lenses. Yea, the Z9 misses lots of tracking when action shots including BIF is against busy background. The D6, D5, D850 and the D500 beat the hell out of the Z9 hands down on that matter! Stop generalizing about what you don't know. The community of professionals that are not on "famous" youtubers "reviewers" thank you. LOL

    • @@TheCameraStoreTV From the beginning to the end. I comented and address the statment that the girl mention "Z9 autofocus superior to the D6" NO it is not! On another note here is the point about this approach to is this technology going to kill this other one? There is no such a thing. it will sound hard what I am going to say but I will anyway. The Japanese camera industry engineers are very narrow minded with some exceptions. The reason being is; In any stage of technological development there are ideas and ideas not explored and still to be conquered and transformed into great products. Do not abandon a concept because something better came by! Look at the market for digital storage for example! Remember when the SSDs came by. OH! Hard drives are going to die! Did it? NO! why? Because they keep pushing to squeeze more and more data into the hard drives. Nowadays, I have a bunch of RAID systems to store my photos because it is cheaper, safer and has HUGE capacities. When there’s something “found” or discovered that is a great technology, you expand on that and push the envelope to the limit. You don’t “abandon” the concept. Nikon had a GREAT breakthrough in the autofocusing system when they launched “the pair” D5 together with the D500. I had a full Canon system at the time. Canon EOS D1, D1 Mark VI, D5 II, D7 and D40. Before that I had film cameras and I was shooting Nikon F-2, FM, FE2, and F3 then Canon Launched the USM lenses System. When I saw that I jumped right off to Canon EOS 1 without hesitation. I got my first 600mm F/4.0 USM and I was in awe! The lens weighed 5.4 Kg! That is 11.9 POUNDS! In 1998 I went to Photokina and Canon as a surprise launched the Canon EOS-3. I could not believe that they just launched that camera with 45 sensor inside for autofocus system and activated by your eye! Nikon? Oh, Nikon! They had just launched the F-5 with 5 sensors inside for film cameras! poor guys. I really felt bad for them. Check that camera and you will understand. So, I was “Purple Canon” no matter what! However, after several years I felt I was carrying too much weight. So, I started looking for a system that offered great lenses, a great autofocus system and LIGHT. Olympus at the time promised bunkers with the E-3. I got the systems. AWESOME lenses. Freaking sharp, sometimes better than Canon. But the autofocus system mehhhhhh. When Nikon launched the D3 my friends told me, you need to come back to Nikon. I hesitated because my system was already too big to make the move (Canon and Olympus). But I kept my eye all over, looking for “better” systems. When Nikon launched the “Pair” Nikon D5 and D500. I got smart and thought, well, I can rent and test it! I did. I rented the D5 with a 300mm f/4.0 D. WOW! I could not believe what I was shooting with. I was already shooting BIF. Then I thought, well Nikon says the autofocus system is the same on both cameras. I then rented the D500 as well. It was even better than the D5! WHY? Because the physical size of the autofocus system module (Multi-CAM 20K 153-point AF system) on both cameras are the same. Guess what? To physically fit the Multi-CAM 20K on a crop sensor camera the image frame will have the autofocus sensors widely spread on the viewfinder because the crop sensor camera frame is smaller than the full size sensor camera. That’s the advantage of the D500 over the D5. On the D5 you must put the BIF in the center of the frame otherwise you can’t get autofocus on it. The sensors are concentrated in the center of the frame. It’s a pain in the neck because you are very limited as far as composition. The only thing that is a drawback is that the D5 shoots at 12FPS and the D500 at 10FPS. Not a big difference. 10FPS has its advantages. More on that later. So, the conclusion of my statement from the beginning is: Why did Nikon launch the D6 with the same “center centric” sensor on the camera? Yes, they improved a little bit spreading a little more to the sides but not even close to how the D500 sensor distribution is. The D6 has a new autofocus module called Multi-CAM 37K autofocus. WHY did they not create a module with sensors ALL OVER THE VIEWFINDER? Yes, more expensive, who cares? it’s a professional camera! Charge money for it! I would buy that camera in a heartbeat! 14FPS is enough for me to shoot BIF. I don’t care about 20, 30, 60, or even 120FPS that the Z9 offers. WHY? because it misses autofocus when birds are flying against a busy background. So you get more frames lacking focus! Better have 10FPS and ALL the photos in focus! You have more keepers! Yes! I have tried firmware 4.1 on the Z9 and it did get a little better but still does not beat the D500 on this matter! let alone the D6! Why don’t they launch a D7 the way I mentioned? They can have the camera at 16FPS. That would be a great camera! Spread sensors all over the viewfinder! WHY NOT? THE NARROW MINDNESS OF LEADERS: “OH MIRRORLESS IS THE FUTURE” Fine! But don’t kill research and development on the “fish” that still proves to have the edge on the autofocus system! EXPAND! Pan intended! LOL Do you know what is the worst? Nikon listens to "influencers" that do not have great photography skills but love to complain about gear that they grab for the first time and shoot with their low level of qualifying skills! OMG! Please don't change what is awesome because of the nonsense comments that these "influencers" make! There are good professionals posting comments on youtube about gear review. Just check their photos. The ones that just talk about it. DON'T LISTEN TO THEM!

  • The Nikon D4 kills the Z9 and the D6 together. It’s still the best Nikon camera ever build and the end of the DSLR era. Sony and Canon have made Nikon a inferior camera. The Nikon D700 is far better than the Nikon Z9. There are so many great SLR and DSLR out there that are far superior than the Nikon D6 and Z9. Nikon have a long way to go with mirrorless caneras. Maybe the Nikon Z8 would be great. Far more important are lenses and the old AF-D are still the best. Far better than the G, E and the Z lenses. For me 16MP is more than enough and the D4 is the King of Low Light.

    • @@2klember I also love mechanical sound. Of course, there are different definitions of photography for everyone, but I think it would be an insult to describe the photograph so shallow. This attitude reminded me of the reflexes of bigoted photographers as they move from the film age to the digital age. Now the dslr era is over and the mirrorless era has opened. A very different period will open in the future. These are just the means to the end and the rituals that change with the change of means. If you're stuck with them, you're getting away from the real thing.

  • So what you did in your review was not run a side by side comparison between the D6 and the Z9! You should have as you are comparing a 20 Mpx low light monster to a 45 Mpx low light disaster. Thats right, the Z9 has that 45 Mpx sensor and its a D850 replacement. its a failure for low light photography, its noisy and has af problems. I have no trouble getting clean images out of the D6 at iso 32000! See how you go with the Z9, its muddy and horrible. Next time actually do a full review with an actual comparison of the 2 bodies side by side.
