  • I was gifted a boxer by my grandparents for my tenth birthday, as my first "real" pet. We named her Tasha after Boris & Natasha, as the (admittedly terrible) live-action Rocky & Bullwinkle movie had recently released. She was the love of my life. She went through puberty and all its ups and downs with me; she went through the death of the same grandparents who gave her to me, with me; she survived high school with me, and came with me when I moved out of my hometown and went to college; she served as the ring-bearer in my wedding. She was very smart, and seemingly convinced she was human...I once caught her sitting on a chair on my parents' pool deck, not on her haunches like a normal dog, but flat on her butt, with one front leg propped up on the armrest. She had problems with small, cancerous masses several times in her life, the earliest being when she was around six. But the four or five of those she had were all just under her skin and very easily removed. Cancer was what took her in the end anyway, though...Whether is was metastatic from one of her skin lesions, or a new cancer all its own, I will never know, but one day she just collapsed. The next day, the vet did exploratory surgery and discovered a mass the size of a baseball latched to her spine. There was nothing they could do; they put her down that same day. She was quite old, for a boxer. She lived 13 and a half wonderful years. She died in February, 2013. She would have been 14 that June. I have owned and lost another boxer since then, (who also beat the average, living to be 11), and now I have a little blind mutt who is almost 8. As much as I love the latter two dogs, Tasha was the greatest, most wonderful dog I've ever known, and may ever know. She was the glue that held my life together throughout my adolescence and early adulthood. I still miss her every day. She made me laugh and smile like no human has ever been able to. Her little wiggling nub of a tail and the in-constant-motion butt it was attached to never failed to make me grin. I miss the little things like that. This is a long story for a comment. But boxers are wonderful. Dogs in general are amazing. I wish humans were more like them.

    • Outstanding tribute to Tasha. While she made your life a blessing while she was alive its obvious that you made her feel like the absolute queen that she was. I was visiting my parents when lockdown started and was stuck in New Zealand for 3 months, while I'd obviously known Gem from previous visits the lockdown gave me a solid 3 months of having her bless me with her love and affection every day. Just the little things like she'd randomly come into my room just to say hello and have a cuddle, to being told by my parents that she waited outside my room every morning until I woke up. She's 10 now and I'm dying to get back to New Zealand so I can see her one last time as I know she probably doesn't have much time left. I'm praying that restrictions get lifted soon over there. It's crazy but out of all my family in NZ I miss Gem the most. Sorry if it seems like I'm trying to grab the attention from your story, I just wanted to endorse your tribute by giving my experience of Boxer dogs. Thank you for your wonderful comment.

  • We had a boxer for almost 7 years. She was the most loyal, loving girl I’ve ever met. I remember trying to walk her for the first time and she fussed the whole way, so when I was out of view of my house I picked her up and tucked her in my sweater and walked around the neighborhood. When she was finally confident enough to walk, we went everywhere together. Our favorite place was the creek. We jumped into the spring and swam summer after summer. Sometimes she would get out and roam the neighborhood, and I would sit and angrily wait on the porch for her return, though it never lasted long when I saw her sweet face running towards me. I left home for college and I wasn’t able to visit. She stopped eating which was odd for her since she was a fantastic eater. The vet said she was probably just depressed due to some recent changes in our family and she would get better with time. She never did. My mom continued to care for her for months but her health was declining rapidly and we just couldn’t understand why. She went out into the yard one afternoon and found my girl lying in the grass, unable to stand. They rushed her to the emergency vet, only to find that she was riddled with cancer and it was too far gone. My mom’s call to tell me that my girl had to be put down was the hardest call I’d ever received. I felt like I couldn’t breathe or swallow, and all I remember saying is “what?” She called me on FaceTime, and I didn’t recognize my dog. She was so skinny and lifeless, and the joy I had always seen when I looked into her eyes was gone. I started booking a flight home and begging my mom to hold off until I got there, but the more I looked at her the more I realized she was so tired of fighting and I had to let her go. I told her I loved her so many times until she took her last breath. I remember feeling the most intense, crushing pain inside my chest like someone was squeezing all the air from my lungs. I regret not going home before she passed. It’s been almost 3 years and it hasn’t gotten any easier. I can’t look at pictures of her without feeling so much guilt. For months after she passed I prayed that she’d visit me, or send me a sign that she’d crossed over and was finally free of her suffering. I have yet to see that sign. Lou, I miss you so much. You were the best girl. I hope the rainbow bridge takes you to the most beautiful spring on the warmest summer day, so you can jump in again and again. ❤️

    • Easy to say but how does one start by breeding cancer and heart defects *out* of a gene pool?

      @jamesbernards8409@jamesbernards84092 жыл бұрын
    • There are reputable breeders actively working towards a longer life span and less cancer/heart issues. It's difficult because it's more dangerous to breed an older bitch so you can't wait until you know she's going to have a longer life to breed her. You have to breed when she's in her prime and try to mitigate risks by looking at how the parents turned out but the parents aren't likely to have reached old age yet either! It takes decades to accomplish any sort of progress with something like cancer tendency later in life. They are working on it though.

Disclaimer: I don’t know how everyone feels about cropped ears and docked tails, but the first boxer was cropped/docked before my family or I knew how harmful it can be (we got her when I was really young), the second was cropped/docked by her previous owners.

      @classiclife7204@classiclife72042 жыл бұрын
    • The idea that mixed breed dogs are healthier than purebred dogs is a myth. Mixed breed and purebred dogs are just as likely to suffer from common health issues like cancers, hip dysplasia, and patellar luxation. There are simply more mixed breed dogs on the planet than purebred dogs, and that skews people's views on their "healthiness" because they have anecdotally met or owned more mixed breeds than purebreds. And there's also the fact that *_not every purebred dog is well-bred_*, and thus should not be judged on the same level of overall "healthiness", as careful breeding and health screening potential parents can easily reduce the risk of common health issues.

      @atreyu4ws@atreyu4ws2 жыл бұрын
    • @@atreyu4ws Thank you, I was about to say that but in a very simplistic way, lol This idea that mixed breeds are "healthier" than pure breeds is a complete myth. I am not against the "adoption" mentality that many people follow blindly, you do you... but let's not vilify the pure breeds either, both sides offer advantages, neither is "evil" or "morally right"
