The only one of the last that counts is the one labeled "approved." Visionary project means someone just drew it up on an iPad.
Most of those projects are metabolism visions. There is a reason why that architectural movement died out - just too over the top
I love how preposterous the designs get at the end. Like seriously, someone just went “what if we built a skyscraper so tall it reached the stratosphere”.
It also would literally be taller than Everest (the final tower).
and Everest as we are used to seeing it starts around 5000m at the base so it appears less than 4km high. a 10km high structure would be like nothing ever seen on Earth. The air would be so thin at the top you would likely pass out and die within 10 minutes if you went outside
@@bdonthebrat5021 yeah air would be thinner but probably there might be a plumbing system, not just for water but for oxygen. If it is possible for commercial jets to have a pressurized air cabin then we can make it work for astronomically high buildings.
It would be a good way to save on rocket fuel. The building could be used as a space elevator.
The point is, we won't be alive to see these finished builds
I actually really like the concept of a massive 1km tall obelisk-like building in Egypt
That building is a stunning design. The lighting of the corner details on the bottom half... it's really a striking building. It says it is slated to begin construction in 2024. I really hope they do it, because it is a remarkable design.
I really hope they do it, if you give me choice of this or that 10km tower, I choose this every day
Welcome to Egypt's Versailles, you may enjoy the glory of our new capital and building, but not for long.
FYI, The Tokyo Babel tower's height is the cruising altitude of most airliners. Imagine sitting on the observation deck of that and watching airliners go by BELOW you.
The thing has enough area to build an airport like 1/3 of the way UP the tower.
@@mycroft16 i mean it would be like 4 times larger than the largest mountain on the planet, it is a crazy idea. You would not be able to breathe at all on top.
@@bentownsend4017 Sure you would. You just wouldn't be able to have it open to the outside at that level. We've built things that sit significantly higher up and have people breathing just fine inside. Not saying it's easy, and there are far larger engineering issues than that one... but nothing technologically impossible.
@@mycroft16 yeah ok true. but that volume is almost unimaginably immense for a single project, and I think it's only something we should attempt if we sort every other issue on the planet first. Bring the materials from mars.

Tokyo acting like they have all the land in the world for those projects
They’re plan is to build it in the bay. Like a floating city surrounded by another city. Kinda cool.
Tokyo (Sardine city )
@samantha ssmith Yeah lol. But remember, these are just concepts from years ago. They know they can’t afford to build them anytime soon so the “grand plan” is so far just on paper.
The Philippines: 👀
@samantha ssmith Ok yeah u do have a point there. Being one of the worlds biggest and most populated cities in the world comes with a cost.
The first half: "Guys we need to go up, it's too crowded." The last half: "We're not compensating for anything."
The X-Seed 4000, Shizimu Mega-City Pyramid, and the Tokyo Tower of Babel were all meant to be a methodical way to make a city inside a single building. That sounds weird, buildings inside a bigger building, but this was quite systematic because now, you can walk from your grandma's house on the other side of the city and stay in the same building. But no one wanted the idea of living in a city that has 1 building. Well, there's a town where everyone lives in 1 building. Its name is Whittier and it's in Alaska. But Whittier is just creepy. Unsurprisingly, no one wanted to spend more than the world's GDP on a 10,000-meter building that takes 150 years to build, so it wasn't built.
@@PotatoeSnow Yeah I know and it's insane
@@PotatoeSnow Neom poses too many problems and Saudi doesn't give a fuck about any of it lmao
Hey whittier is nice. It just got that nickname because the town only has like 200 inhabitants anyway. There are uncountable amounts of condominiums in cities with that much or way more people living in it and getting their everyday needs in it. I guess with bigger projects like with tokyo, it begs the question why? What’s the advantage to cover a whole town with a building? So you can control the weather? Just doesn’t seem to outweigh the gigantic, exorbitant expense of work and money required to build that in the first place
What about the Aeropolis 2001?

That 10km building will need to be airtight like a spaceship with airlocks at a handful of floors. Otherwise people at the top are going to suffocate from lack of oxygen.

@@life-xyz82647 ?????they have a 333m and 634m skyscraper, they're both world-class towers my guy
These projects were dreamt up at a time when Japan had a growing population and booming economy. It has neither of those anymore. You can only justify such massive mega-projects if you have a HUUUGE population to begin with. Japan's population is expected to be halved by 2100. In fact the entire world is experiencing a demographic crunch as people stop having children in sufficient numbers to maintain population growth. Right now we have nearly 8 billion people, with the same population density as Afghanistan at 58 per square km. that's quite low since we have a TON of empty land to build on. America alone has enough empty, barren land to home billions of people. This isn't visionary, it's fucking megalomaniacal.
@@mlc4495 true. I highly doubt any of Japan’s visionary project will come true. The country’s economy is crumbling as well. And why would they want to build such a big eyesore in the first place?
Millennium Tower, Aeropolis 2001, Shimizu Mega City Pyramid, X-Seed 4000, and Tokyo Babel Tower are all projects that were planned or conceived during Japan's bubble economy around 1990. However, all of these projects are now frozen or gone, and there is no possibility of their realization. On the other hand, in Tokyo today, a 325-meter high skyscraper is under construction, which is expected to be completed the year after next.
Thank God! Tokyo didn't deserve to have buildings as ugly as these.
At least someone understands the truth of it. Thank you. Most of those projects were never intended to be actually built. Why they are included in a supposedly credible list of the world’s tallest buildings is beyond me. Ridiculous.

Honestly, the Empire State building, even if it isn't the tallest, is the most impressive. The thing was built in the 30s in less than *one year* and still holds the record for length of time it was the tallest building in the world. Plus, the symbolic factor; since it was built during the depression and was so much taller than anything else, it was such a symbol of hope. Also it's probably the most durable of any building on the list and looks freaking dope.
Also, it's spire actually serves a useful purpose: as a mooring dock for airships. Which is also a very cool and unique feature.

It's a shame Tokyo didn't just really go for it with a 50,000 meter pyramid that covers the whole city. Maybe with an airport at the top so planes don't even have to waste time descending. It's got as much chance at being built as one of the other two buildings that have multiple times more building material in them than all the rest of the buildings combined lol.
The problem comes into play with things like air pressure and temperature, also being affected by the weather. I think 10,000 or 15,000 feet is where the "death zone" begins for humans.
@@Major003 The Death Zone is anything above 26,000 feet. The city of La Riconada in Peru is about 16,000 feet elevation. Anyway any ultra tall buildings would be pressurized and climate controlled.

@@obinnaobiekwe4910 the singer was an office building but with its obscure slender tower it was built out of time for the more modern day office demands of the 60s 70s. No it's the whole country
There was a proposal back in the early 20th Century where they suggested to build aerodromes that were on massive, concrete towers so they they were already at operating altitude for the aircraft of the day. Even for early biplanes, this would've been the equivalent of building an airport on top of stilts thousands of meters high.
what was the name of the project?
I always thought that a building's height counting its spire is "cheating", I think its height should be up to its usable space. I'll accept the Empire State Building spire because it was meant as a mooring dock for airships but a spire just to be taller? That's just lame
Yeah !! There’s a rule in place that a spire cannot be more than half of a building’s height. I commented that this list is kinda wonky because there are buildings that are either shorter and/or taller based on their roof and/or architectural/spire/ decorative heights !
@@ascott2168 especially when they are placed side-by-side like here, I can see, sure it's taller because of the spire but if I look at it as a whole, it looks shorter because I don't really think of the spire as part of the building when judging its height

It's also have a spire, a long one. But still, the whole spire is an usable space, because the spire is meant to be an observatory deck.
Placing extremely high antennas on the very top to inflate the building's height has always amused me.

@@thatperformer3879 Yoo, you ain’t lying😂😂💀💀
Japanese earthquakes are like: Am i joke for you?
*that escalated quickly* on a whole other level
Every 100 m above sea level, the temperature decreases 0,6 °C. Imagining the Babel, the temperature decreases 60°C. Insane
Shimizu Tower would be really cool cause it's not made just to be tall but made for natural disasters in mind and Japan really needs it. Probably won't happen as envisioned though.
According to some sites, shimzu tower will supposedly start being built in 2030 and will be finished in 2110, which is a shame, cuz you and me won't be able to see this building that will completely change the image of Tokyo.
@@just_another_internet_man755 Taking into account the current situation in Japan, it is almost impossible for such a structure to be built.
@@nateriveer_8590 If Japan changes their policy on immigration, there's a high chance we will see the shimizu pyramid being built. The xseed 4000 and tokyo tower of babel is impossible tho.
@@jisooislove988 it's possible, but it's currently easier for a project of this size to be built in China
@@jisooislove988 Impossible.... Japan has limited land for such a huge object so you have to build it where people already live. That means that you have to destroy thousands of perfectly fine buildings, relocate people to other parts of the country cus you removed the housing in the place where they lived and hope that you have enought money, hands and time to finish the giant project you have started. Then you also have to hope that people actually wanna move back to the place from where they had to move in the first place, cus while that thing was being build, other parts of the country was being developed into something else that people actually learned to live in. All that is just too huge a risk. Remember that in order to go all Akira, Tokyo has to be destroyed first.
Still, the story of the Tower of Babel did not teach people anything)
Wow I didn’t had idea of the existence of that huge Mecca building, and it’s taller and more beautiful than the famous ones that everybody knows.
That sudden 200m jump to the Burj Khalifa.
Once in my childhood I drew a tower 100 km high, it should be the first. I will apply for my visionary project. By the way, thanks to the author for such a beautiful comparison, it's always interesting.
Early by few days. Just yesterday Merdeka Tower 118 in Kuala Lumpur, claimed the 2nd highest building in the world, at 678.9m

I don't think Jeddah Tower will be complete yet, so it's beautiful and gorgeous looking.
