The problem with the healthcare issue is that we are just looking for ways to pay for it - higher premiums, higher deductibles, etc - instead of asking ourselves why healthcare is so expensive in the first place. If the pharmaceutical companies and the hospitals, etc know that the insurance companies will be required to pay for their products and/or services, they are not much inclined to keep their costs low. And when you also factor in the fact that, at least in the case of hospitals, there is virtually NO competition, then you have a perfect storm of runaway costs. Pharmaceutical companies also do not have much incentive to keep costs low, especially if there is not a generic version of their medicine available. For example, did you know that the average cost of an open-heart surgery operation is over $70,000? Let that sink in for a few seconds..... SEVENTY FREAKING THOUSAND DOLLARS. I would LOVE to see the cost breakdown for that. Medical school is about $170,000. So anyway, the only way that we're really going to get costs under control for healthcare is to A) eliminate the paying agent/middle man: The insurance companies. Their sole purpose is to collect money (based on cost/risk analysis, etc), but the only way THEY make money is if people don't need their services. B) Go to a single payer system where, for example, a federal sales tax is used to collect money from EVERYBODY to BENEFIT everybody. This would mean a money pool of over 300 million people. You all know why this will never happen: Because most of our politicians are in bed with insurance companies, and so they will not do anything that will endanger that relationship. See, England and much of Europe did this right after WWII before the insurance companies could take hold (If they tried to do in this day and age they would have the same problem we have now). I don't see universal healthcare happening anytime soon, even though *poll after poll* for decades has shown that the vast majority of Americans are in favor of such a thing. JW3HH
