Agree Amen Hallelujah Hosanna Hosanna
AMEN
I listened to all different versions of this amazing gospel song and it’s my personal opinion that this version sung for the movie is the best one. And I think it has to do with the BPM. This version has a more upbeat tempo and sounds modern for even today’s times. Not to discount the original version or Aretha’s version but occasionally a new version may sound better than the original. This song makes you want to clap and praise the LORD. And it’s sung by Reverend James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir. They sang it without the reverend and upped the tempo to give a more soulful, gospel feel to it. The studio probably didn’t want give the choir any credits as they would have had to pay many more people. And that lead singer’s voice is smooth and powerful. I’m loving it!
Tempo and pitch. I agree completely! Thanks for the additional info. How there isn't a released version of this is baffling!
What's her name?
@@Abull01I searched high and low and couldn’t find any info on the lead singer of the Southern California Community Choir, which was created by Reverend James Cleveland. As this story proves, black exploitation was being perpetrated by prominent blacks on their own people. I do know that Tom Scott, one of the founding members of the Blues Brothers Band, produced the song, which is listed as the title credit song. If you have any inroads to contacting him, I’m sure he’ll have that info. I strongly believe the choir didn’t receive much, if any, compensation to perform that song in the movie m. This choir was one of the most choirs at that time and performed all over the world, including Jerusalem.
She go most of the lyrics WRONG!
I'm so glad, This movie allowed the whole song to be sung for The movie. It was real and I'm sure if you played this movie in the theatre today, the audience would join in and turn that theatre out. Amen
rogueleader1988 Sho Nuf!!! I wish they would release it again! The theater would be jumping!!!
I think if a DJ played this in a CLUB ( remember those days?😢) it would have ppl dancing.

Mariell Clement yup Calvin was beautiful
Ikr!!!! 😍😍😍
Mariell Clement fine as a .03 mm Pentel ballpoint!
This is the best version of the song!
Sing Lucille.. When we were not ashamed of sanctified gospel music
grand slam - who is this singer - I’ve been tryina figure this out for the longest time
They never gave her a credit in the closing credits . Flip wilson simply referred to her as Lucille. It's a shame cause she's pivital in the two gospel songs. I wonder if the choir was the Southern California Community Choir???
I remember seeing the making of Aretha Franklin's documentary with The Rev. James Cleveland (AMAZING GRACE) and this is the Southern California Community Choir. I see all the faces from that choir that was in that making of that movie!! So it's got to be that Choir!!
thank you for your response...@@tainachapman9486
As old as this movie is and I remember seeing it when it first came out, this song still sounds good today. 🤗

It's a dayum shame that nobody knows who the lead singer is or the choir and the fact that they did not put this version of "How I Got Over" out as a single is a travesty ! 🤔
This version of how l got over is truly the best❤❤
I absolutely love how good they sang this song ❤️
I love her voice!! Also, Calvin Lockhart is beautiful, sheesh!

Donna Shinall Gospel music is the best
This is such a sincerely sung song. Not all posturing and self-aware, the way some individuals sing now. Thank you so very much Alvin N for posting this.

This takes me back to the times my grandfather was preaching in those small baptist churches in Mississippi with the Martin Luther King, Jr fans on the old back dirt roads in the early 70s.
Carlos Johnson when I think of Mississippi, all I can think of is Emmett Till and all I can say is fuck Mississippi!!!
Dr.King in the early 70s?
Dr. King’s picture was on church fans in the 70s
I didn’t even grow up in church but I loved this song ever since I saw this classic
Eternal Peace Queen Paula Kelly aka Leggy Peggy 💐💕
This is classic! Many of these old school cats starred on good times together and Cosby show great collaborations
Luke 6:38...AMEN✨ *Praising should always be on our minds while in church because he blessed you with another day to be in his house* Being Blessed by your Family and Friends is one thing while holding on and Battling but for those that go to church being Blessed by your church family while holding in and Battling is another because it doesn't feel good to go to church looking beat while trusting in the Lord getting prayer and things keep getting worst..the congregation talking bout you from time to time then the Lord finally slides in and having you singing about how you got over.. YES it's going to happen for somebody that's holding on now..Keep trusting the Lord💚 I LOVE YOU...✨
Amen

This is one of the greatest classic movie I ever saw , even though im 18 & like Blaxploitation movies & classics like this . I love it
Unique Brissett II u do realize the actors and directors hate that word blackexploitation

EDeck Wow, thanks. Incidentally, I grew up UM, and was confirmed in that denomination.

She sounds great, however, no one can sing this song better than the late Mahalia Jackson. My spirit is full today because we're living in some very depressing and difficult times in 2022. I have to think back, How I Got Over? Praise God!!!!!🙏🙏
This is one of the most important movies in Black film.
My soul looks back and wonder how I got over last week so I can only imagine as soon as I see Jesus the man who ayyyyyeeeee 💃🏾🏃🏽♀️💃🏾🏃🏽♀️💃🏾🏃🏽♀️💃🏾

Does anyone know the name of this choir and their incredible lead singer? The film does not identify them in the credits. IMDB does not give any information either. It is a shame because, they really shine!

Do you know who made this version??
@@lindenbyass6902 OK! Everyone keeps saying this is the best version but it's no comparison to the original production of this version. You better sew your ears back on and go listen to the first!

Me & my mom love this song! Its the best version !
This was a great movie. This sister can sing
Amen....OutStanding.
I LOVE THIS GOSPEL SONG THANKS TO THIS MOVIE. THANKS BILL COSBY. LOVE THE MOVIE TOO.
Sister Louise!!! "You are in rare form tonight!!!!"
Leo Hawkins You remember the line well, AND it points out a flaw in the movie! How can it be "tonight" if they're leaving immediately after church for an afternoon church picnic? My guess is they shot the interior church scenes at night and forgot to edit Flip Wilson's line. Either way, sister Louise WAS a great singer of a good Christian song!
snowrocket. You are very perceptive. I hadn't realized the connection with Flip Wilson's night comment with the impending church picnic.
Leo Hawkins I honestly missed it myself until I'd seen it several times. Also, look at the rest of the scene. The gangsters arrive (in daylight) behind the church bus (which is for the picnic). When some of them leave them before the song is done, they drive away in daylight. The filmmaker's "continuity" person is supposed to catch this stuff, but invariably several things in EVERY movie get missed. IMDB.com is great for trivia and goofs like this.
I always thought that was a young Mikki Howard sing that song...
Yeah, he almost went out and got him a bottle...lol
And everybody said, Amen!
I have mad respect for gospel music, but this is gospel-funk! And that is a good thing!
Please pray for healing for me
Great Actor, ACTRESSES, THE BEST, LEGENDS MISS THOSE TIMES
Can’t wait to sing this in heaven I’m going all the way dumb with my praise ❤ amen

I love this movie but really love this part. Thanks for posting.
I do not think the duality of the words to this song as they relate to this movie were lost to Sydney or Bill when this is the song they decided to have the choir sing. Its pure genius.
The imaging of the scene enhances the song but not only is this the best version it was probably one the first gospel songs to start it's popular rise we still see today.
