  • This is, I believe, the best joke telling I’ve seen from Norm. The way he almost adopts a character when he gets to the Uncle Terry part and progresses through the war flashback, getting more and more ASMR and even affecting a kind of old timey war captain kind of cadence etc, not to mention the “faaaaarr from these shores” bit and then staring off into nothing when he recalls the troop abandoning him. It’s just so absurd it’s utterly brilliant.

  • To me Norm is by far the most rewatchable comedian. This joke doesn't only get better with every repetition for a long period of time, it's also hard to not look at it as some sort of masterclass in storytelling.

  • He's like the Picasso of jokes. A normal person this bad at telling jokes wouldn't be entertaining at all but his ability to keep you interested through a crap joke is some of the most entertaining garbage I've ever seen. It's a mastery beyond most artists ability. "It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child."

  • Norm is the expert in these overlong, aimless, wandering, jokes with simple, dumb, ridiculous punchlines. That's the joke - that how long it takes to get to that punchline is as much the point as the punchline itself. I always wondered whether these are legit jokes, or whether Norm makes them on the fly and adds a lot of his own spin on them to drag them out.

  • As a Brit, My first introduction to Norm was this episode of the podcast with Stephen Merchant... I think it is one of the funniest hour (or so) I have ever heard. Norm was wonderfully funny

    • It’s one of the best, along with Russell brand, super Dave, and then from the Netflix series, judge Judy and Carl Reiner, jane Fonda, not everyone is sharp enough for him but when they are it’s magic, I’m a Brit and he’d have killed it here, should have been world famous , don’t usually dig stateside comedy other than curb and Larry sanders.

    • Agreed, this one is stronger. The Stern version lacks energy to where it's almost sad in places. This one keeps moving fast enough that it doesn't sink in, so it stays hilarious.

It took him 20 years to tell my mother-in-law anything that he witnessed there and doesn't speak to anyone else about it, certainly not my wife or her bothers and sisters. But everyone I see the man I think of this joke and laugh to myself. You're the best ever Norm and we miss you.

  • As Norm takes you through the story, you're picturing the classroom, the hatchery - thank God for the hatchery! - and finally "d'Nang." You are waiting, then forget, and waiting again for the punchline. Then Norm delivers the final shot... like Uncle Terry with his Kalashnikov.
