Rotor downwash is a commonly ignored phenomenon that occurs during helicopter hover in close proximity to a ground surface. It has the potential to cause significant damage to nearby vehicles and objects, as well as people.

  • 5 to 10 secs is not enough. Not even 30 seconds. Planes have crashed as a result of rotor wash coming in for landings more than 30 seconds afterwards. To be safe, stay least 2 miles behind it.

  • They should really do more about warning other craft when a helicopter is operating in an area. Safety should be important enough to put our thinking caps on so we avoid this in our future. Such as when operating from a remote airport that the ATC still be notified and take precautions like a mandatory delay after a helicopter is operating in an area. Thee video I saw the helicopter wasn't moving and blew a small craft over and into the ground. Not good to say the least. I don't think the three rotor widths rule applies here either, so something needs done.

    • The warning system I agree with. Not sure if this airport was controlled or not. Atc is usually pretty good about spacing aircraft from helis. But I have seen them not space aircraft and I purposely delayed my arrival because of that.
