Welcome back Appreciators! This is Part 2/4 in my Call of Duty Retrospective series; this time we are speaking about the history of Treyarch and evaluating each game they have developed for the series. Thank you for all the support and down below there is a list of sources that I mentioned and some of the corrections to this video. Please comment, like, and subscribe, joining Appreciation Culture! If I missed anything, please comment below, and correct me if I got any information wrong.

These developers try their best when making these games and I want to make sure they appreciated to their fullest even if I disagree with them or critique their games.
The Infinity Ward video could be a long while depending on the success of this video so just a heads up if anyone reads down this far.
Corrections:
A. Call of Duty 3's first mission may have not been a demo for Activision although I do remember reading it (unfortunately that is not a source).
B. Call of Duty World at War's multiplayer was not created in under 6 month and that was probably something I heard from a friend and did not fact check.
C. I probably butchered the plot for Black Ops 3... or I didn't. I don't know.
D. Not really a correction but I feel bad for giving Jack Wall a lot of crap and genuinely believe he is a great composer. I just sound negative when speaking on him.
E. Did not touch my feelings on microtransaction systems cause I will do that in Part 4 video.

Who the fook is that guy? 😮 really though, who are you?
Fun fact: in black ops 4 jetpacks are in the game, just not available... Or shouldn't be available: "hackers" are able to use them and fly around the map in multiplayer
This slander of CoD3 is just so unwarranted that it hurts, it's such a great game with a brilliant story
It really isn’t the multiplayer is mid and the campaign is horrible. The zombies was pretty good tho
@@Greaper300 CoD3 didn't have zombies... Call of Duty 3, not Black Ops 3
@@arronkeegan484 oh mb p
@@arronkeegan484 call of duty 3 was amazing
Agreed, its treason.
Part 2/4 😂😂😂 homie loves to talk some CoD
I love world at war, great atmosphere, good gameplay (minus the grenade spam) and a lot of other things come together to make it my favorite cod game
The grenade spam on veteran is so real, I’m actually pretty sure the game is programmed to automatically throw a grenade at you if you stand still for too long 💀💀💀
Fuck. Bouncing. Bettie’s.
@@AppreciationCulturei could be wrong but i think its 10 seconds standing still and everyone and their nan will chuck a grenade at you
I don’t ever comment on videos but I want to highly praise how well made this video is, to the script, the great use of footage and the length, love this kind of content
Odd that no one mentioned here yet that World at War had had custom zombies maps for YEARS, one of the big sells for Black Ops 3 was the customs, yeah, but that hype stemmed from the mod tools being available for the first time in 7 years
Don’t forget about BO1 Custom Zombies too, but since the mod tools were unfinished with no Radiant map editor, some mad lad managed to compile WAW Mod Tools tip to BO1 Mod Tools and somehow got it working. BO1 customs are nowadays overshadowed by BO3. BO2 Mod Tools is also happening but hear rn that Plutonium is getting Mod Support and there was a supposed BO2 Mod Support with Radiant but ultimately canned due to mod creator focusing on other projects.
I did not know this, great points to bring up!
COD 3 has an amazing story and great characters. I felt much more attatched to the characters than to any of the ones in the previous COD games. Plus its (afaik) the only game that lets you play as canadian and polish forces. And the soundtrack is just phenomenal.
That theme goes so hard! And yea, we got some good COD 3 representation in the comments which is great since I obviously didn’t see what COD 3 fans were seeing. Everybody likes what they like though so it’s great to see COD 3 getting some love! That is so true though about playing as Canadian and Polish forces in campaign.
This was and will be my favorite video essay/retrospective on a game/s I’ve played every year since my childhood by far. Great video man very informative and entertaining
Man, I used to play the crap outta those old Spiderman games. I had no idea Treyarch made those. At that time I didn't care about who developed anything I watched or consumed. Funny how times have changed.
Good video man I watched all the way through with no breaks and I was entertained the whole way through keep it up❤
Whenever someone says "if you made it this far in the video, consider liking and subscribing" I usually don't listen much but I saw I was over an hour into an almost 4 hour long video and I love long videos so I was like "Yeahh, I should like and sub lol" Thanks for the great work!
I am just like that 😂 i feel that, my rule is 1min self promo for every hour… I feel like this is fair but I’ve been even thinking about trimming it for longer videos so there’s no repeat reminders in a video. I hate the way it disrupts the video itself. I appreciate the support!
I started watching this as it was recommended to me on my home page because i love treyarch and their cod games. Then, 20 mins in, i saw you only had 200 subs! Man, I'm blown away. This video is awesome. Keep up the work, and you'll grow so quickly.
Thank you for all the support, your comment means a lot!
I started watching this because I fell asleep while watching tigers vs lions I was wondering why I was having cod dreams😂
@@Keenuk-_- i was watching something and passed out, woke up to this a hour later, and have no idea what I was watching that brought me here but stayed awake to watch this amazing video! Lol
You forgot about part of BO2 Zombies of Tranzit’s Ambition. Treyarch and Jimmy had many ideas of wanting Zombies to have these fun gamemodes while Tranzit was going to be the best map ever, but because Treyarch & Jimmy were too ambitious and Tranzit had trouble running thought the PS3 and Xbox 360, they had to cut the game modes and Tranzit’s ambitions were cut down because the consoles at the time couldn't handle the map, hence, Fog, Lava, and Denizens were implemented by force to slow players down so that the game can load up memory space. This was a dark time for being a COD Zombies fan and Tranzit almost killed COD Zombies until Mob & Origins and Jason stepped in and saved the mode. It’s a shame Jimmy had too much ideas that were fun for Tranzit but had to be cut because of the tech along with Tranzit having massive cut content.
Activision was throwing his ideas out the window as well which sucks cause we never got his fully realized vision.
They really had a ton planned. You have to respect it... they were just built different.
Your content deserves more love. Into gave me chills. But that song always does. Good job man 👍
this is an amazing video! playing it in the background as i play games and you deserve having the algorithm bless you with all the views
1:40:35 You are 100% right on gamers not caring for the MW setting. I came in a bit late into COD. I Got a PS3 slim in high school and uncharted came included with it. That was my first action game with guns and when I saw the trailers for BO1 it looked so balls to the wall that I got my sister to buy it for me. I played the single player multiple times and I had NO idea that the prison segment or ship segment was scripted because I'd be immersed as hell. If I played that today I know I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much because of the restrictions but wow man. This is such an amazing video. Not done with it yet but this video is longer than the new COD campaign and I am enjoying it.
You gave me a good laugh with that last sentence and Uncharted is such a fantastic series. Thanks for the support!
Bo1 was my favorite campaign. Played it multiple times. It’s insanely restrictive. But the story was insane. Did Mason kill JFK? Who actually has mind control of mason. The commies or the actual CIA?
The nostalgia this video brought is crazy
just got through the introduction, this will be my meal time show for this week thank you 🙏
While during the "Golden era" IW and Treyarch shared assets, their engines actually split from WAW onward, all the way as far as Cold War Treyarch modified their engine, from game to game and with all the hype of MW19 engine- it still is an evolution of the same IW engine Infinity Ward worke with
This retrospective was very well made and engaging. This must have taken forever to make lol thank you for your dedication.
I can speak for a pretty large part of the hardcore fans of BO4 that stayed on the game even after MW19 released. MW2019’s MP was just not for a lot of us. It was way too casual friendly and lacked any skill-gap. Couldn’t get into it, so I went back to BO4 along with many others. Obviously went back to Zombies too.
I feel that! Black Ops 4’s multiplayer has a high skill floor compared to the other CODs and that’s my favorite thing about it With IX 😈
Don’t confuse the word “skill” with you ability to consumer whatever trash Activision throws your way. A game created in 12 months as an answer to Fortnite. Bo4 lovers are by far the most pathetic Cod players. They all buy Cod yearly and mindlessly.
@@josetomascamposrobledano4618 “a game created in 12 months” why are you making stuff up?? Black Ops 4 had a 3 year dev cycle. Only Blackout was made in under a year, but the rest of the game was not made in under 12 months. Regardless of that, the game is still fantastic in my opinion in terms of game design and overall replay value. I don’t just eat up anything COD makes considering I didn’t like MW2019 or MWII
@@Xpertfusion oh kid. It’s not about “liking”. It’s about CONSUMING. Are you going to brag about buying the season pass and supply drops next?
@@josetomascamposrobledano4618 If I liked the game a lot of course I was gonna buy the season pass for more content… why wouldn’t I? If I didn’t like the game, then I probably wouldn’t. I also make videos on the content so it obviously encourages me to do it. In terms of supply drops, I rarely purchased any because you could earn them for free in-game. I only ever bought them for a few different videos here or there.
This is one of the best retrospectives ive ever seen. You got my sub🖤
Thanks for all the love! Working hard on future videos for February and on that next COD retrospective!
Love the video man, good quality. Was surprised to see this solid, quality video was made by a smaller/newer KZheadr. Earned a sub, keep it up man. Subs will go up in no time. Looking forward to more cod & gta retrospectives
96K views and less than 500 subs, you have a special video happening here brother, your narration was perfect and said so much of what I didn’t realize I was Always thinking of these games band missions as well as game modes, well done!! You got my sub homie!! BO 2 and buried is one of my all time favorites!! I still play it to this day on Xbox! Your video editing was Faqking amazing and perfect! You deserve to be at 400k subs! The zombies music is so dayum iconic I absolutely love it! There’s nothing like loading up zombies and hearing that eerie yet exciting music
Thanks, this means a lot! That’s why I’m spending months on that infinity ward video Buried is so underrated… and I’m glad to see fellow Black Ops 2 fans unite here. Legit might be my favorite COD.
@@AppreciationCulture🤘😎💪 keep up the great work! You’ll get up there soon
Nicely done retrospective. Love me some Treyarch CoD.
This channel is insane, random video that my KZhead just auto went too.
Can’t wait for the Infinity Ward retrospective bro. Just started playing mw19 again and it’s so good. Very well done.
Realism mode was the most fun I’ve had with a COD in a long time, I’m with ya!
Fucking phenomenal retrospective, cant wait for the next 2 parts.
I feel what you’re saying about Black Ops 1. I have played it about 30 times though and it still doesn’t get old 😂
Haha, I totally feel that… that’s me with MW2 and so many other games. Black Ops 1 is still a top 3 COD for me tho
Enjoyed this. Keep it up.
idk how i got here but great video, keep it up !
When I first learned zombies was just a thing they wanted to try out and if it failed they would’ve been like “Eh it’s whatever” I was amazed especially seeing where it is now.
This was epic, I love all the old COD discussions. I think you might get better KZhead metrics / algorithm push by breaking it up into smaller videos. Personally, I enjoyed the long format though. Thanks for a really cool video.
Great break down of the studio
I always thought the ending of Black Ops 1 was supposed to be a red herring. The end shows that everyone thinks that we've won, America saved the day. It feels VERY 'fake', right? Well, yeah, that's the point... With the footage of JFK you see later, to me that's the REAL ending. It shows Mason's possible involvement in the assassination of JFK, and Mason's mental state. Looking back at the ending of Redemption, there are numbers that flash, symbolizing that Mason hasn't yet recovered. To put it simple: Mason is the only one not celebrating, everyone else is. It's like being at a party, and you're the only sad one. The red herring is the ending we see with the American flags, showing us that everything is saved; but the real ending is the actual last one, where we realize that not only does Mason see the big picture, but we also feel like we didn't really win. Also keep in mind that Mason was supposed to be killed by the CIA, which helps give this feeling of a 'fake' ending. @AppreciationCulture
I actually remember seeing this in another video somewhere awhile ago and I think it’s very interesting (in a good way). I still think if it’s the case that it’s a little too cryptic to be spotted unless you do some digging. But as an idea though, the ending being a red herring is a fantastic concept. I thought about writing on it but I didn’t know if it was just a game theory (which I wouldn’t want to take) or if it’s amongst black ops fans commonly thought of as the ending?? Tbh you could probably answer that better than me. I do remember the quote with dragovich where Mason says “you tried to make me kill my own president?” And dragovich says “tried?”… I feel ya on a lot of what you say and evidence certainly can point to it being a red herring. If the sequels honestly didn’t exist (even though some of them are awesome) that ambiguity with the ending would probably shine a lot brighter for me personally. It would be like the mystery was never fully solved on where Mason was at mentally and where he was down the rabbit hole by the ending of the game… we would never know if he was getting better or just getting worse. Still love the story either way and the fact that there is so many nuances shows how much fun it can be to dissect and discuss Black Ops 1 and 2’s stories.
Yooo this is great listening well at work can’t wait for infinity ward
Exactly what it was intended for, Thanks for the support!
We all say Cod4, calling Cod4 "Modern Warfare 1" is just criminal 😭 fr though, great video! Well reviewed and well put together!
Thanks Nitroh! Appreciate all the support! Modern Warfare 1 *police sirens*
Black ops 4 in its prime was amazing, I had so much fun playing blackout and multiplayer with my friends. I even got my friend who hates cod to play black ops 4 for blackout and he loved it, as well as the multiplayer. Also I would argue we are still in the dark ages of cod.
This video is very well made
World at war on steam actually has a decent player count with no cheaters
This is crazy to me but I also don’t have an online code for it so I can’t even fact check 😭 I’ll take your word!
This is a brilliant video!! Great job man
ruthless aggression was peak imo, also can we get an honorable mention for randy’s voices??🤝🏾
Stay sleeping on CoD 3, Eder Dam and Merville were the best maps by far. There was even an elevator glitch on Eder Dam that gave me hours of fun to mess around with.
Man I really got to hand it to you, Black Ops 2 really is a fantastic story. I never really gave it much thought, because Black Ops 1 was fantastic too. It's crazy how much I've thought about it as well, but 2025 is only a year away, I was only 9-years-old in Black Ops 2 came out.

1:35:24 this is the map in cod mw3 where you survive wave after wave of mercenaries, attack dogs, helicopters, and juggernauts
Fun fact about cods timelines. They all existed in the universe that COD zombies explores. And when they reset the universe at the end of bo4 it created the new timeline we have now using the black ops games as the basis bc that was where the "prime" zombies universe existed. Weird stuff ik
Black ops 3 was huge for me as a kid, it was interesting, i loved the campaign, and the nightmares mode was awesome. I was an age where typical war games werent interesting enough to me and the futureistic-ness was intriguing. I disliked the single map for zombies, but with custom zombies maps on pc i still come back from time to time. It overall is very nostalgic for me, good or bad
Love to hear that! Black Ops 3 has such a passionate following and is just as high if not higher than black ops 2 and 1 for many people.
Nightmare mode really is such a cool idea like “oh let’s go through and make the campaign from a zombie apocalypse standpoint”… Black ops 3 really is one of the most ambitious cods ever with how much stuff they were trying to accomplish.
I forgot where I heard this but apparently zombies was inspired by the flash game last stand
You… I have to thank you for giving me a 5 second dopemine rush of nostalgia for a game that I haven’t touched since my family had dialup internet!

Ok so the whole story for Bo3 is actually hidden in the pre loading screen for each of the missions, there are like these rapidly moving rows of texts moving at like blinding speed(yeah imagine expecting the player fan base to pause the game and read this which isn’t even fucking possible, you can press pause but some of it gets blurred out),let alone figure this out. These rows of texts are basically Taylor’s journal entries in which he and Hendricks(their story starts from “In Darkness”,you already know the player died in the first mission”black ops” which is actually the last mission(yeah don’t ask me about this mindfuck) are hunting an other black ops team which went rogue which is led by Dylan stone(Dylan stone replaces Taylor from ur players view during how u normally played the story),so it’s Taylor and Hendricks hunting Dylan from the mission”in darkness” to the mission “lotus towers”up until the end where Dylan uses the mothership to dismember Taylor and then Hendricks is forced to shoot Dylan in the head which strongly upsets him and gives him a lot of stress and ptsd, and guilt as he used to know Dylan stone personally and was a friend to him, along with Dylans team who him and Taylor hunt down and kill thought the course of the campaign.Due to stress Hendricks reassigned from his his role as ops commander to prisoner rescue(“that’s why in black ops he leads you and the other new blood rookies in the start of that mission) and Taylor gets cybernetic augmentation and then”black ops starts “technically “life”is the last mission when Hendricks who was offended by what the CIA made him do(kill Dylan who was his friend”)and goes to Zurich to fuck up the deal between the CIA and the Coalescence corporation.Taylor and Kane are sent to apprehend and stop him and it comes to a point where u cap him in the head after he kills that Sebastian Kruger executive guy and then purge ur shit and get the player out of Taylor’s head.
You are the Strongest Soldier among us for doing this

2:49:10 that’s not the first cod with custom zombies world at war had it too!
The whole us vs russia section of mw2 was a pain. Especcially wolverines and by their own will
Alright I’ll go easy on ya since you were actually chill about your dislike of BO3. But that was one of my favorite cods of all time, MP wise. The loot boxes really ruined it to a degree, but the MP was sooo good! Played it for about 3 years straight. The fact that good guns were hidden in gambling really make it shitty to come back to, my PS4 account had tons of loot guns, but my new pc account has none. And it sucks. But overall the quality of Bo3 was insane, there was so much effort put into all the details. Visually it still looks incredible on max PC graphics. Also pretty much ALL the maps were so good. The campaign was fun but had a trash story that 1% of people understand. Basically, they had enough freedom and time to do whatever design they wanted but yet focus on one thing: fun gameplay. That’s my summary. BO4 was also great but I didn’t like it as much. They again focused on good maps and gameplay. But the live service aspect kinda stunted it in the long run, cause it’s dead now since it depended on upkeep way more than others. Didn’t seem like there was nearly as many added maps over time. Blackout was one of the saddest rise and falls, I wish it was playable still. I had such a good time on blackout, and the map was amazing. It had such good updates and changes through its life, but totally disappeared as fast as it appeared. Also, BO4 was going to be wildly different but got rearranged very late into its development, with a lot of stuff just totally missing. So we don’t even know how good it could’ve been cause they played it safe.
I agree with ya, I crap on Black Ops 3 mostly for just campaign, and black ops 4 for lack of content… I don’t think really any of these games (outside of cod 3) are straight bad. Black Ops 3 fans are the most passionate group of fans that COD has ever seen and tbh I can see why. Zombies and Multiplayer were really fun. It is one of, if not the best exo era COD game. You bring up some great points too like Blackout being great in its prime.

34:15 You are not in Germany, you are in Stalingrad, in russia. Great video though!
Cod3 had its issues but it was an improvement on the first two. Your being a little harsh, your assesmemts are accurate but there was stuff that at the time at least was interesting.

A fucking "music round". The caucasity.
I learned a new term today
people do not give bo3 slide enough credit
Id say if BO3 was made before Ghost id say it would be in the golden age campaign not great multiplayer good but Zombies? HOLY 💩 ITS GOOD AS HELL
I could see that! The golden age really wouldn’t have shifted to the dark age Black Ops 3 was the next game… there wouldn’t be much of a reason for a shift. Black ops 3 is better quality than MW3 tbh. But don’t tell anyone I said that… I could be arrested for that opinion.
Calling black ops 3 balanced is a wild take, I played that game for 3 years straight and I only saw the same 5 weapons. Oh, and BO4 was only supported for 8 months after release. Oh and calling the BO4 maps better than BO3 is wild to me, I like both main Devs of zombies, but there's an objectivity in everything and you should acknowledge that. Not that I'm saying your opinion is wrong or invalid, I'm saying you should reinforce your taste for simpler zombies when relevant, otherwise it seems like slander which could lead to unneeded contempt from the opposite opinion holders.
It's so fucked up that Raul's VA died on Xmas, rip.
Trent Reznor made the theme for Bo2, can you actually do research for the composers next time?
I thought Michael Knolls was talking
I think it's kind of a bit of a disservice to this amazing video to not take the DLC into consideration. Even contrasting the launch month to the last month. That's just me amazing video though
That contrasting idea is fantastic! I’m hoping the biggest jump in quality is Treyarch to Infinity Ward Retrospective in terms of editing and writing so maybe I’ll do some contrasting with launch versus current. I think the DLC not being talked about is a disservice to a couple of the games (black ops 3 and Black Ops 2 zombies) but for the most part it doesn’t effect my opinion on any of these games that much. I never got around to playing the sledgehammer games dlc (nor do I really care too) and Infinity Ward is almost all just map packs with the exception of Extinction and Zombies in spaceland. If you got any recommendations though, I’m all ears!
DMS is that you
💯
