  • I feel like octopuses don’t get enough credit for their intelligence. They have excellent problem solving skills, a keen memory, and, as I recently learned, can even have a playful nature. Just before covid hit, I took a snorkeling trip in Bora Bora. The local tour guide introduced us to the most social and curious octopus ever. She swam right up to the guide, did a greeting kind of wave dance for all of us and then proceeded to play a game of tag with him. She would grab his hand, let go and then dart underneath the boat to the other side and wait for him to swim to her, so he could tap her head and she would then race back to chase him in order to grab the guide’s hand again. That back and forth went on for several minutes. As each of us slowly entered the water, she swam up to examine us individually. She even wrapped herself around the waist and leg of another snorkeler as he lounged off the steps of the small pontoon boat. The guide had to feed her a few chunks of fish so she would reluctantly let the man go. He said “Gigi is such a flirt isn’t she?” It was so surreal. I know I will probably never see anything that incredible ever again. I will always have respect for this amazing creature.

    • I think we underestimate a lot of animals intelligence only because we view ourselves as being the most intelligent/developed species. A very narrow view. We might be the smartest species in the world, but if we can teach octopi the real world, maybe we can introduce them into our world and in a few hundred years many things could change or perception of octopi

      @LeafBro_@LeafBro_ Жыл бұрын
    • @@viviennejordan215 They definitely do not get lonely. Loneliness is an evolutionary trait that exists only social animals. The reason loneliness exists is to discourage us from attempting to live solitary lifestyles, because our species survival strategy is highly intelligent cooperation. So to facilitate this, we feel the need to be around other members of our species, and have positive interactions with them. This is why it feels bad when people are mean to you for no reason, even if what they said doesn't hurt your feelings. It's because we are biologically driven to want to bond with one another, even in fleeting moments (why we feel so compelled to be nice to strangers.) Cephalopods are solitary animals. They do not experience loneliness. That's not to say they can't experience some strange form of friendship, but at the end of the day they do not feel biologically driven to form social bonds, at all - it just isn't in their DNA.

  • Octopus had this great idea to get his powerful huge friend, who is clearly another variety of octopus, to assist him in hunting. “Here, put your tentacles HERE, and push when I say go.” YESSS!!! I really hope she is enjoying this as much as I am, and maybe I will try teaching her new tricks to see how capable she is tomorrow.

    • @Toby Thompson Copied and pasted from the Merriam Webster website: “The three main plurals for octopus come from the different ways the English language adopts plurals. Octopi is the oldest plural of octopus, coming from the belief that Latin origins should have Latin endings. Octopuses is the next plural, which gives the word an English ending to match its adoption as an English word. Lastly, octopodes stems from the belief that because octopus is originally Greek, it should have a Greek ending.”
