Good Luck with the fundraising Naska! You are excellent at delivering info on your channel. I worked with Max his fist time in Formula racecar series (i was already resource for manufactures (Nissan), and an eSports world champion at the time and got a job working on Ferarri's simulator side for the Ferrari Winter Series) Antonio Fuoco was the clear stand out on track, (crazy talented driver) but working with the guys on the Sim, Max's mind power, interest, and dedication for racing in general was way above everyone else. Though he was a real racer already, he's mind power and obsession made me feel like he was like many of the top eSports stars I had to fight against. He'd ask a million questions and spent the most extra time on the simulator, while all the other drivers went home. I don't even think he was using the sim to necessarily get faster in the real car (he had a good handle on that ). I think he is so "challenge driven" he just wanted to get faster in the sim, and he truly loves the challenge of going against sim-racers. His rise in Sim-racing has been super impressive.
You forgot, Jos and Michael Schumacher were close friends. Max said in an interview that they often visited 'Uncle' Michael. He probably learned a trick or two from Michael too. It's a shame Michael can't see his son's career and how well Max is doing.
The driving style explains one part, Max is inch perfect every corner, every lap, every session, every quali , every race and every season. He is also doing it in the equal opportunity and equal machinery sim racing world.

I read somewhere that Jos used to handicap Max at a young age, and make it harder for him to win, by not allowing him to pass on certain sections of track. He was forbidden to attack on straights or places that looked too easy to Jos. Effectively teaching Max to pass on corners that weren't really considered good spots to overtake. He would also leave the setup off on purpose to see if Max could identify what was off with the cart, thus raising his Racing IQ in the process. Im newer to the sport, but in the 4 years I've been following F1 I have digested every piece of content I could get my hands on. I say this with my limited knowledge of the sport. But I think Max may be the greatest driver the world has ever seen.

2005 Raikkonen was the fastest pure driver ever. It was never properly realised due to the car reliability. After that, Max may well be the fastest and will almost certainly become one of that all-time greats (Schumacher, Senna, Prost).

Ricciardo has a very similar driving style to Max, albeit less sensitive. This includes v-shaping, which is contrast to how the McLarens are supposed to be driven. (9:07 is partially correct)
@@AbcdEfgh-sq2tfI thought Ricciardo was on the oversteer side too, but I saw this video from Driver61 I believe where he explained in detail that Ricciardo's actually on the understeer side and he couldn't adapt to the oversteering McLaren, which Norris had adapted too, hence he's become so quick
Red Bull design the car to be as fast as possible, Max just adapts better than most.

Although he likes pointy cars as well, his settings compared to that of Max was like "driving a bus" as the car setup of Max is like "setting the resolution of your gaming mouse on endless as it then goes all over the place".

Yes, but you miss the point: RB is able to MAKE the car so fast BECAUSE they have a driver like Max who can handle that... So it is not either the car or the driver, but the combination of both.

True, good video and explanetion. But still there are people who don't understand what set-up differences between drivers are and think that his car is 'better' than his teammates car. I hope you will make an easy to understand video one day about set ups and that it's the driver together with his engineers whom decide how his own car is set up every race according to his own preferences.
There is a famous story about Gerhard Berger, when he changed Teams 1996 and started driving for Benetton, he asked to drive Michael Schumachers 1995 car the way he set it up, he wanted to experience why he is that fast. After a very short test he told that car is undriveable he could barely keep it on the track because the car was that extremely pointed at the front
I can remember that Jos Verstappen drove Michael Schumacher's car once when they were team mates. I can't remember when, but I know that Michael was done with qualifying and Jos still had to qualify but had a car issue or so. Therefore the team allowed him to drive Michael's car, ...and he crashed it.

I've seen plenty of analysis videos on Max's driving style and mindset. And while this one doesn't go into every detail (Peter Windsor can talk for hours about Max's car placement for instance) it's actually not too shabby. It goes deep and illustrative enough to actually add something to the tons of stuff that's already out there. I especially like your explanation about weight distribution. So well done and keep going.

But Pieter is not a driver or driving expert, he said a lot of BS too, he made many video’s about late brakers until he found out a early braker Max was the fastest. Took him a while to understand motorsport basics that exit speed is way more important. But at least he changed his mind after me and few others keep on commenting that he was wrong, and there is more Peter nonsense. Not convinced with Peter as a driving expert

The guy has been woven into the fabric of the sport for his whole life, to the point he was managing world drivers' champions likely before most of the people leaving critical comments were even born. How about showing a little respect? Peter was literally at the track 3+ decades back watching his mate and WDC Mansell using the cornering technique and was able to compare it to the rest of the field then - and since - so I'm not sure how you guys are coming up with these assertions about his supposed lack of insight, especially when we have had drivers literally dominating the sport up to this day clearly using that exact technique. Either way, fantastic video.🤘
Max may not be my favorite driver on the grid but even I recognize Max’s unrelenting commitment to getting better both on and off the track which has made him a driver that understands the dynamics of his vehicle better than most.
Wish all people could be as open minded as you 🙂 We all have our favorite driver ofc but that shouldn´t take away the greatness of another skilled driver 🙂

His preference for a pointy front end makes his ability to keep tires alive while still holding a gap even more impressive.
It makes it understandable, because he’s able to distribute the tire wear very evenly over all four corners, due to the car being prone to oversteering.

@@ukps9632 Yes, which is to counteract the fronts sliding. Hence, more evenly distributed tire wear across both front and rear axles.
With his setup and driving style, it's easy to engage the rear tires. Normally you have to slightly unbalance the car to get to that point and that apparently costs time. Max with his setup gets engagement of the rear pretty much for free so his only job is balancing the car to keep all wheels engaged in cornering. While most drivers are busy getting rotation, Max is already shooting for the exit. This story motivates me to keep my setups pointy and rotatey and not make them more safe for consistency. It's more fun to me but some people say understeer is fast because you can push more. This is proof that what's true for them may not be true for all. BTW Max takes the hairpin at Spa with a double apex. Diving in for a late apex, called a V line in this video, does make it easier to handle a lot of rotation because there is less time spent in a critical turn while also trying to get the acceleration going.

Everyone forgets that he was also very close to Michael, yup that one and he had quite a good relationship with him while he was growing up because the two families were very close, and I think it also contributed to his development, his driving style is similar to Schumi's
sorry but this is not entirely correct. the Verstappen and Schumacher family were just normal friends, nothing special, the 2 connections they had were Jos and Michael who drove for Benneton F1, but the main reason was the karting track in kerpen Germany. I was born in 96 and have karted at a high level, including against Max & Mick " driving under another name back then " ralph his kid and so on. anyway Max mainly owes everything to his father, the Schumacher family played almost no role in it. If you really want to know who did. It's the pex family.
@@_Zeru i think what most people mean is that jos verstappen has raced with micheal, and thought i can not reach that same level, but if i have a son and is interested in racing i could learn that style from a very young age. everyone can see that max his driving style looks a lot like micheals and i do not think that is a coincidence. so that does not mean they spend every day together, but jos clearly had the advantage to be with micheal and understand his driving technique.
@@_Zeru i think there was a period where they were very good friends since max told they spend vacations and holidays together and called michael 'uncle' .. but they had some sort of falling out i think cause jos has also spilled the beans about the benneton days (sayign that perhaps some shady stuff was happening with the electronics in the schumi car in the aftermath of the tc ban) .. michael playing a big part in verstappens racing i dont believe either....cause max said he was very young and wasnt even aware of michaels accolades.

It's not that clear cut. Aero advantage (Red Bull 22-23) and engine advantage (Merc 14-20) aren't necessarily the same thing. I would assume having more power gives you more than what aero power gives you. In Merc's case, the argument is very strong that it is in fact the car. It also explains why Merc's aero concept during their dominating era was very different than RB's as RB had to go for an extreme design/concept to compensate for low power.
@joetheftman9619 the thing is though, the faster car is the faster car regardless of where it gets its advantages from. For redbull it is mechanical and aero, adrian newey seems to have some front suspension tricks up his sleeve. But max's car was still the fastest. You don't just win 19 races because you are better than everyone else, if the cars were closer, max wouldn't have had a runaway championship. That is not to say that max is bad, or he needs the fastest car yo win though, and that is the important distinction people forget that causes toxicity within the fanbase.
@@CTcuber4Kthe redbull is definitely the fastest car on the grid but the whole grid is much closer than the pre 2021 seasons. Max usually wins by 10-25 seconds but during merc domination renege when there used to be 1 min+ gaps

I'd say it's beyond talent. You can lose talent without practice. But if you refine it, it becomes skill. He has passion. Skill. And when you look at his handling of corners, the reason he can drive them so well in a pointy car. He has the guts to commit. Most others want to let off the gas and slow down. But max has the guts to throw that out and send it. Not letting fear of crashing make him release
The most important reason Max differs from other drivers is already defined by the so-called MaxVerstappen rule: You should not move unpredictable entering a corner. This rule was introduced because Max Verstappen seemed to have the ultimate talent to be able to look in the mirror entering a corner with an unbelievable speed. No other driver seem to be able to do this and therefore moving before entering a corner is rightfully dangerous. But it explains very well the reason why he is by far the best driver.
I would argue prime Lewis is better.
Someone caught a radio message that showed max had the mental bandwidth to watch other racers on the jumbotrons while rounding a corner. You can learn that a bit, they teach that to fighter pilots, but that ability has to be somewhat built-in to the person.

He is super consistent and relentless. Max is like a metronome, most drivers can match his pace, but only for a couple of laps. Right now only Alonso and Lewis can fight him on merit, giving a good car. The rest of ‘em lack talent and/or consistency.
Lewis has shown he can straight up beat him too. Lewis is good at forcing Max into simple errors somehow, proper shit housery haha lol.

I think it's possible Max is among the best ever, BUT, only a scientific study would prove who is better than who.. same car, same adapting period, same settings, same number of iterations on identical circuits, same everything (the sim example is a good one), then conclusions could be drawn in a purely objective and valid way. But again, there is no doubt that their success is certainly highly correlated with the probability that these drivers are among the best.
I hear that, while other drivers are chilling, Max is in the sim. That reminds me of how Senna would spend his days off in the garage talking to his mechanics about car improvements.

to summerize, there is no magic, no shortcut, you put in the WORK, have the PASSION, and test the limits of what is POSSIBLE!
All that early Karting training might look harsh but Jos truly cared a lot about Max and still does. And right after a moment of heat, He forgot about it and moved on. Every win, every success was celebrated 100%. His training was simply too good.
There is another often forgotten trait that explains something equally important as speed. Mental strengh. This dude is a facking robot. His consistency and focus are absolutely otherworldly. He can drive dozens of consecutive laps within one tenth of a second of each other.
Extreme sensitivity married with discipline and hard work. Inspiring.
Well, you don't need the best car to win, if you put Logan Sargeant in the RB19 and Max Verstappen in the Williams, I'm fairly certain Max will still finish ahead of Logan over an entire season, probably in almost every GP.
The RB19 would be completely undrivable for a driver like Sargeant. He would crash in every corner.
You don't need THE fastest car to win the world championship, but you do need a car which has the pace to at least consistently challenge the fastest car. I would argue that in 2021 the Mercedes was the fastest car, but the Red Bull was a car that could win races if driven to its maximum potential which is what Max managed to do.
MV sees himself not as ‘the emperor of F1’ but as Max Verstappen. He tries to get the best out of himself. Not the best of the rest. By nature, he is so extremely gifted with the necessary skills for what he is doing that he automatically will be the best of the rest. Always being very critical to what he is doing. Additional to this, he drives a very difficult, but very fast car, however, I have the idea that there are a few other cars quite close to what the RB is performing. AN developed a car, only the best can get the maximum out of it. The fact Perez ended 2nd showers Perez is an exceptionally skilled driver himself, unlucky to have MV as a teammate. MV is a class of his own at this moment and in this car. If it is not in the car, it is impossible to utilize it. An other specific MV point is he doesn’t allow himself to get distracted from what he is doing and what be has to do. MV has the luck to have The best racing engineer as well. Their communication is close to perfect, that helps a lot. Thanks for this video.

Max's gifted talent is natural born. It is in his genes. You should watch his earlier karting races. He blew everybody away, disappearring on the horizon, year after year, mostly being years younger than the other guys. He is patient, like a pike waiting for he opportunaty when needed, and hits the opportunaty in a nano second like a snake when nobody saw it coming, He is bizarly skilled, mentally rock-strong, lightning fast, cunning, smart, dedicated and bloody ambitious. He can feel- and drive on the limit, like nobody else, feeling and preserving his tires at the same time. He will rule for years to come.
Don't you think that Jos has contributed a little more than just his racing genes?
Got the F1 pkg this year so that I could ride with Max on many of his laps. It is amazing to see what he does with the car. You can hear his trottle points and where he is "full send" and at points where I ask, "how the hell did he just do that?". I used to time trial and autox my cars for 20 years so, I really enjoy how mega skillful his is. It's like watching a GOAT develop over time. Thanks for an excellent video. That Spa revenge was pretty understandable tbh, as you can see in the clip it's not just Max but all three Redline cars that get spun in the incident. Max was probably getting PTSD flashbacks to Hungary '21 lmao

Very good analysis. You just forgot the most important though : his braking technique. Like Ricciardo, he is not a late braker, this allows him to get on the throttle quicker and thus load up the rear and take the corner faster. This does not work in an understeery car like the mercedes, where you have to brake late to be fast. That s why Perez was fast in the Racing Point but is struggling in the RB.

@@mike04877 yes for overtaking. Verstappen can also do that. That is completely different from a qualy lap or even a regular lap. You won't go fast with the RB if you brake too late.

I don’t think this is true. Max brakes very late as he is able to point the car into the corner exactly where he wants it to go. This allows him to use the throttle to rotate the car through the corner and gives a smoothe pickup after the corner. Late braking is the faster method. You see this for example, at Monza 23 when he was racing Sainz. He brakes a lot later than Sainz into turn 1, and this eventually gave him the pickup out of turn 2 to pass Sainz. The other factor that promotes late braking on the Red Bull is its anti dive geometry in the front suspension, which keeps the car balanced during hard braking.

I think we can say that Max is the same as Kobe based on his dedication to his sport, he practice his sports day in and day out even when other drivers are out there partying or having a vacation he's out there practicing in the sim or doing sim racing.
That is his party or vacation. My kid can have hockey practice, both on and off the ice, stay for an open skate, and still come home and shoot pucks for an hour or two. When he has an off day, he's begging to go to open hockey. That's where he relaxes and has enjoyment. I'm sure Max is the same. He derives the same pleasure form going out or whatever by racing, cars, karts, or the sim.

When I think of people who rise beyond the best of the best like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Tom Brady, Messi, and Wayne Gretzky, to name a few I'm familiar with, I see an attitude that's different than all the others they compete against - they don't want to just win a race, or a cup, or a championship, they want to dominate, to crush the opposition. They want to put so much distance between them and everyone else that there is no question who is best. It's a mindset that drives them all the way to who they will surround themselves with and the equipment they use. They will always be the one who works harder than anyone else in their sport. They also have a very good understanding of the history of the best performers in their sport and are actually competing against them to earn their place along side them. Each of those athletes can tell you more than you ever knew about their heros and are happy, humbled to some point, to be counted among them. Which is why, in my opinion, Max does all of those things, and more, that @albertonaskaeng is talking about.

It’s interesting that Jos called Max out for using the pads but used them himself. You can see them in some of the F1 races he retired in.

Some people pointed out after watching onboards that Max's driving style is comparable to Michael's. Tons of microcorrections. Schumi was know for keeping his car always on edge. And knowing that Michael and Jos friendship Im sure that Max got some trainings from the 7 time champion.
Alex Albon explained Max's ability best in terms of general gaming terms. Imagine playing an FPS game, you have your natural mouse sensitivity which is on the edge, if it's more than that, you can't control the mouse movements. But Max is like being able to play at 5x normal sensitivity. To enable fast twitchy plays but still managing to control the aim. That's the difference between other F1 drivers and Max. Very few can even handle the pointiness of the car at which Max likes his car to be at

reminds me of what ive been doing in sim racing (im not driving profesionaly just for fun). i like it when the rear end is more lose and the front more "pointy". yes a more stable car is easier to drive but u cant drive it as hard, especially when it comes to slip angle. ive known that technic for years, but from inital d and keiichi tsuchiya.

Just race a z3 if you want a pointy car. The suspension geometry combined with the rear suspension out of a e30 makes it very tail happy. Maybe it was my suspension mods. All I had to do to my 328 convertible was add bigger sway bars and put H&R oem lowering with Bilstein HD struts to make it handle better. I had to tune more than that and I learned a lot, but it was worth it. The z3 also has a faster steering rack doing almost one less turn lock to lock. I finally settled on making the front end playful since it was so nimble with the exception of the sway bar, and I tried to take all the play out of the rear end but left the stock sway bar on so the front would be dominant when it came to body roll.
I don't follow F1 but, I love your videos. I do follow MotoGP and Max's upbringing seems similar to Jorge Lorenzo. Wishing the new channel great success.
The best way I always thought of trail braking is you should only turn while braking and you want to spend the least amount of time brake. Tires have most grip slightly spinning. Balance this out (if your car doesn't have huge aerodynamic grip) and you get the best acceleration out a corner, all 4 tires are able to scrub slowing down (you aren't parallel to the road, the car is at a slight angle using both tires and box side profile of the car to slow down) and your able to achieve what's regarded as a 4 wheels drift where you use zero steering inputs.

It is a fascinating study that the best drivers use the 'haptic' areas in their brains to maneuver their vehicles. Haptic == feel in Greek (I think). It is also known medically that this haptic center in the brain must be developed before a certain age or nothing will come of it. Since Karting has age ranks below the Haptic Age (10-13 Y.O.), you can appreciate that the Karting gave Max the advantage. He can drive with his eyes closed while his mind navigates the circuit by feel and commands fingertip pressure controls. Yaw velocity is the big player signal. You can test for it in a dark room with a controlable rate table. A 'displacement' driver operates the controls by essentially pre-determined moves while the 'feeling' driver senses very quickly (at high frequency, so to speak), the car's reaction to their own differential inputs, compares them to the 'reference model' and distributes the next differential commands. Truly 'closed-loop' control. Displacement drivers are essentially open loop control driving style. So, it's his Mom who's responsible for his success !
Max is also a karting World Champion.
What you call a pointy car is probably what I consider to be a car that has good rotation at the rear as opposed to a more neautral balance. That is how I like my on road RC cars setup; to have rotation at the rear.

Correcting the opening statement. In formula 1 you CAN win if you don't have the best car. Max did so in 2021 when Mercedes had the best car and in 2022 when Ferrari had the best car. Lewis did it in 2019 when Ferrari had the best car (yet illegal). The right statement is in F1 you can't win without a competitive car.
Amazing video. However, first quote couldn't be further from true. You don't need THE BEST CAR to win, only a good one. If you're good enough, you can make up for a reasonable gap between your car and the best one
Great share and very interesting - something I note on Netflix F1 driver to survive is the drivers don't appear to spend so long with their teams and engineers working to align engineering and driving - compare to Michael Schumacher who (appeared) to spend so so many hours withing with his team until they aligned driver / engineer balance and success followed. From netflix very curious how much the drivers spend in practice of real F1 cars, anyone know? Netflix doesn't show them practicing much at all

Great video, glad to see you state that it does take a fast car to win the races, it is certainly a part of it. That said I am not a Redbull fan, nor a Max fan, but I have great respect for the work dedication that Max puts into his drives. From constant on track work to even the sim running, for him to realized that those guys on sims can help teach and improve him is says a lot. He is always looking for a way to get better, to extract that little bit more out of the car and himself. To clarify no I am not a Mercedes fan, though I appreciate the advances they have tried to push with the DAS system and the zero-side pods (though they didn't work). My love for F1 is seeing the best teams innovate to beat their competitors and for the top drivers to push themselves just as much.

I think one of the keys that lead to verstappens success is the fact that he doesent always drive fast cars. If you really analyze max verstappens driving persona, he drives gt3 cars, mazda mx5 cup cars. This allows him to dance with the car (slow cars compared to f1 car) mid corner more which excersises his split second at a slower pace. This is why verstappen can drive a super aggressive and unpredictable car, while predicting the car. Its something everyone should do to be quicker, I do it all the time to gain one or 2 tenths whenever Im stuck.

Is that brake telemetry correct? Find it hard to believe they go from 0-100-0 without any degree of gradual brake pressure reduction, never mind genuine trail braking
Let’s not leave out that both JP and Adrian Newey listen to Max’s inputs always, so the car continues to improve!
It helps too, when the whole team taylors the car to Your driving style, the other driver has to adapt to the car hence to Your style.
Imagine Messi winning a professional FIFA24 tournament or LeBron winning against the best e-sports players in NBA 2K. It would be so stupid, right? Max is doing that in F1. The only other professional sportsman who can do it is Magnus Carlsen. He wins OTB and online chess tournaments, which are practically the same.

Max is a combination of many things that makes somone a Neo behind the wheel. The best from max is yet to come as he further matures and passes his initial goals and desperation to win. Win or lose will feel exactly the same and in the psychological war that goes on in every sporting persons head he will always be the cat and everyone will always be the mouse. Any teammate is doomed. . This may or may not lead to wins or championships, thats usually 99% the car that is the deciding factor but with max its only 90% the car . Max is a force of nature and we shouldn't take for granted the spectacle of seeing him perform his art in our time. With only half a chance, cup of luck and if he still desires it he will destroy all records there are..

The simplest way is to increase downforce on the front wing or decrease it from the rear wing. In reality it's more complex and depends on: setup, suspensions design, aerodynamic balance, etc...
Straight line top speed is determined of course by the engine, but mostly by the aerodynamic drag of the car. Simple put, the bigger the area of resistance the slower the car will be on straights. So in order to be fast on straights you preferably want low wing angle settings. The rear wing has far more area and influence on the drag profile than the front wing. So the goal is to find a rear wing setting where you can find just enough rear end grip to round mid and high speed corners, and add just enough front wing to get the car to rotate instead of under steering. And as Alberto mentioned, a lot of other parameters are in play also. Tyre,Suspension, spring, gearing, etc. and with hybrids a additional bunch of things you need to setup.

yeah, his driving tecnhinque is so ahead that he doesnt even need a winning car, thats why we win in sigapour, where the car wasnt that good, thank god he is so above everyone and that his fans are sure he will win everysingle season cuz none is close to his driving tecnhique, he could go to alpine and still fight for poles, im so grateful that max is my favorite driver so i can sit back and enjoy every race, i dont even need to care about silly season or anything like that, every car will suit him and he will make it go his way, none will ever beat him cuz his driving style is never seen and makes every car go faster than anyone else, i cant be happier to know that my favorite driver dont need a good car like others do, he just get in the cockpit and make his magic, in a bad day he is better than everyone and in a good day he is doing duolingo at the same time to not lose his streak, its amazing to see that my favorite driver is above cars and the technical level, i dont even worry about upgrades, and im sure he doesnt care too, cuz no matter the car, the team, the engineers, he will just drive the way he only knows and its better than everyone else style, none can match him, he is just out of this world, none in history ever seen this driving style, unique and also unreachable, he is just one of a kind, im so glad i put my faith in him and you cant tell how good i sleep cuz i dont need to worry about anything, he just win, every car, every circuit, every weather, every country, every place of the world Every time he loses is just to not bored the audience so, dont even bother, none is like him, none can even come close, i made a good choice in life, and it is being a fan of max verstappen, hope he can stay in f1 for so long to show everyone that he is unrated actually, he is like none, everyone think he is good or even the better, but thats not even close, he could even drive with 3 tyres only and still fight for pole, he is not the best of the history, he is from another planet, he is so underated i swear

Leclerc is very close to Max in handling the pointy car. Lewis also likes the oversteer setup but want a planted rear. He doesn't like rear instability like Max and Charles do
Lewis prefers UNDERSTEER, having a stronger rear then front do that he can be aggressive on the fronts without feeling like the rear will come out

Nonsense, Lewis likes the slight Understeer method. You know absolute nothing. They use the same racing line not racing style. The reason why Lewis can have insane lap time with his Understeer is because of his late braking style, the late braking is also used by greatly by Montaya and Senna. @@hammadkaimkhani7632

@@dco1019 Lewis is a short corner driver ( apart from 23') and you need a oversteering setup to short the corner.. he is not doing it because his current doesn't allow him to do what he wants
