  • This is really nice, I can perfectly understand everything you're saying. I'm from south america colombia and my native language is Spanish and I do have this terrible obsession with british english that I've practiced for almost 3 years by my own, without taking classes or going to an english institute and at some point in my life I had the opportunity to know some people from other countries who speak English and they thought I was from the UK because of my accent... I'm really happy about what I achieved during this time practicing and put a bit of effort in learning english by my own hand and I will keep doing it. :)

  • Thank you Teacher Luke. I usually give up on listening maybe just after a few seconds for accents similar to the footballer you played in the video because I totally am not able to catch what they say. I am so happy this time that I can understand only because you care and made this podcast for us. You give me motivation not to avoid listening to different accents from now on. I know i would be proud one day If i can decipher even one sentence of their speaking on my own. Being able to understand what other people are trying to communicate is such an enjoyable thing. Thank you Luke.

  • I have a deep appreciation for the Southern London accent. Although I initially studied English in centres where American English was the norm and even travelled to the US to improve my fluency, it wasn't until I visited Australia and attended a centre in Perth, WA that I truly fell in love with not only the charming Aussie accent, but also the delightful British accent that was taught there. The experience was invaluable in helping me to develop a more nuanced understanding and appreciation of English as a global language.

  • Luke congratulations! You're the best by far, a clever , cultivated, well prepared, well articulated lecturer by nature. The whole video captivated my attention in such a smooth and argumentative way for the depht explanation of a trick subject . As a non native English speaker/learner I found this subject so interesting and clarifying, and it took me off from the comfort zone as well, learning and listening to you made me feel the urge to keep improving my English even more in order to achieve fluency ( by the way, I reckon I can pick up different english accents very easilly, the ones that I symphatise the most are the British accent (contemporary RP pronunciation) and the Australian ( general accent), and irish accent, they are the easiest for me to understand and speak as well . It's a a breeze learnnig with you! maybe you can't measure up how deep your attitude is benefitial for us non native English learners Worlwide. Keep it up mate, cheers from Brazil.

  • Hi Luke, In my country Morocco, there’s about 30 accents from two languages (arabic and berber, and our arabic dialect is the hardest ever), and yes we do have our standard accent located between Casablanca and Rabat the two major cities of the country, and this standard accent is associated to middle workers class of people coming from all the part of the country over decades …People of my city (casablanca) do find some different accents charming… people of some regions sometimes make fun of some of our expressions 😅. For English, I like the scouse accent of Liverpool even if I don’t understand it and I think that’s it the hardest in UK, but I find it funny and sweet, and it looks like Conor McGregor’s accent . I visited UK 🇬🇧 last year, I traveled over 4 cities (London, Oxford, Manchester and Liverpool) and found that further north we go, the accent become more difficult 😅

  • I don't think anybody's reading this anymore. This podcast is 4 years old and the last comment was 2 years ago. Many things have changed. For instance, everybody knows the word lockdown. The same goes for the word coronavirus. So, I'm stuck at home and today is cooking day. While in the kitchen I was listening to an English Teacher that I usually follow. Automatically when it finished started your podcast with Lucy, I think. I loved it. So when it ended I went for another one I found the one with the Kanguru Teacher. And liked it even more. In the meantime, I became a subscriber of his KZhead channel. And wanting a bit more from Luke I got listening to this podcast. You are brilliant. Seriously. About your questions (only some) and accents. I loved your explanation and it suits Portugal as well. You said that England was a small country, so that means that Portugal is a tiny country between Spain and the Atlantic. Believe or not I recognize at least 10 different accents. Some are geographical, like the islands of Madeira and Azores, football has also huge importance to the identification of regions and their accent. Long ago the accent that could be heard in the city of Coimbra was considered to be the proper accent because not many people studied and Coimbra was the centre of culture, with all the unis and everybody was improving themselves. Not anymore. The posh accent is one of the Lisbon accents. People from other areas "correct" their accent when they want to sound more cosmopolitan. The tricky part to distinguish real posh people is the use of certain words. Example: we have 2 words for "red" and "boy" and "gift". If you use the wrong word it means that you are a fake posh. I love languages and all these small details. That is why I keep learning English. It because I love it, not because I need it. You, Luke, inspired me and I am very grateful. Keep up with the good work and I hope to hear from you quite soon. Best wishes, stay safe. Rui

  • Here in Russia we have some variety of pronunciation based on a geography but it is very rare in comparison to the basic language of mass media and big cities. In most cases it comes from the language (not Russian) which is native to people who lived in areas before it became Russia. Mainly this difference is distinctive in a rural population or those who is not well educated. In general we have no accents which has names.
