How good was Juan Roman Riquelme actually? #GOAT
New episode of a documentary series where I plan to present all the greatest players of all time and then give them a score so a ranking of the best players can be created. In this episode we take on Pavel Nedved who played for Boca Juniores, Barcelona and Villareal for most of his career, not only one of the greatest playmakers of all time but one of the greatest players of all time. See how Juan Roman Riquelme ranks and just how good he actually was.
Finally someone made a video on Riquelme. He is one of the most underrated players in football. He was a great player to watch.
He’s rated as he is because he didn’t do it for a big club. Basically better at being a big fish in a small pond
He is lazy, inconsistent and slow Totally unfit for current high pressing meta in football
Selfish player. He only played for himself. Wouldn’t last a minute in the modern game
"underrated" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Also Ortega ⚽️Argentina produced the most technical gifted players ever..Brazil is my team but you have to appreciate 3D football . Imagination., vision and passion 👍⚽️⚽️
I like to think that every brazilian my age saw this guy as a true force of nature. He always seemed ready to demolish any brazillian club that played against boca, and although i was only a kid in 2007, what he did to Gremio in the Libertadores can never be erased of my mind. And i remember very well that there was a weird mix of fear and admiration when a brazillian club played against riquelme. It was as if everyone hated facing him in the field but at the same time really wanted to see him playing for their club.
i remember they called boca "Carrasco" hahaha they also destroyed Santos 5-1 in 2003 final i was just a kid and remember to this day
As a Brazilian and a supporter from a team he dismantled once, he was a TRUE genius! In South America he's definitely one of the greatest legends ever and he's also respected/loved from almost every one I know.
I'm from Denmark. I love Riquelme more than Michael Laudrup tho they were similar players in similar roles.
I can't believe there are so many brazilians called "Riquelme" because of him... I don't know if an argentinian would ever call his son Rivaldo, Ronaldo, or Romario... maybe we are really that egotistic as argentinians... I still remember when Brazil was kicked out of a World Cup and the brazilians said they were going to support Argentina because of Tevez... you really are the world capital of football I think. Bigger than us on that sense.
Riquelme played football like he was in the matrix he could see the game inside and out more so than anyone else. He was amazing at boca but his time at villareal was spectacular more so than his time at barca . He was the ultimate show man.
Yes, he is also the son from one Mafia bosses at Argentina. He fled crime by becoming a footballer and he truly loved it and never came back. A people's champ
@@palatrass Interesting fact. That explains him better.
@@palatrass wtf? He isn't. He comes from a super poor family. Stop spreading lies
Riquelme single handedly with no disrespect to Forlan or Sorin, guided Villarreal to the UEFA Champions League semi finals in their first time ever in the competition. Kind of shades of Maradona at Napoli. He was a quality player, free kicks, vision and dictating the match. He ripped Inter Milan apart that was full of stars like Veron, Figo etc.. Quality Romy 🇦🇷
Single handedly almost won champs league with them and took argentina to copa final single handedly without training or a club
Juan Roman Riquelme my most favorite player. I actually name my late son after him,"Riquelme". Most underated player.
rest in peace.
Riquelme is a last name, no?
Sorry to hear about your son. Best wishes.

Riquelme is the man, the myth, the legend. His work with both Palermo and Forlan in Villareal is what dreams are made of for forward players.
That villareal team was quality
I have never forgotten Riqelme. Such a classy player. I truly believe his speed was very deceptive. He made the defense feel like they could take the ball away from him but they never could. Riqelme was a true pace setter which is a quality that has been lost. Its about knowing what the game needs. Sometimes its to slow it down and keep position. Other pace setters in my opinion, Pirlo, Gerrard, Blanco, Totti, Nedved, Kaka,Zidane and Ronaldinho. Blanco being the least known but great for his national team. Players that can keep the ball, pass to create separation, score from free kicks, create for him self, finish infront of gol and have the mental toughness to kick penalties...thats what a true #10 is. I love your channel my friend. Keep it up
Riquelme was the king of Ball Possession. The guy could hold on to the ball.
considering what happened to ozil, i dont think he can cope in current football meta.
@@r3zaful you don't understand football if that's your take away from ozil
@@r3zaful really ?? Riquelme was actually better than Paul Scholes but somehow Scholes is untouchable but players like Riquelme and Gerrard who didn’t won much were overrated when infact scholes wasn’t anywhere near to that level up until he started playing as a deep lying playmaker like pirlo and even pirlo was better than scholes, let alone Riquelme. I know you didn’t mention Scholes but I was just giving you an example. Sorry if I offended you.
@@debindralimbu381 both of them is unlikely to play at highest level, current football managers requires more running and instruction than creativity in general, that's the reality, Scholes can't press space and doesn't have defensive awareness like Carrick and doesn't have enough energy to chase the ball like Hargreaves, which today managers prefer to run like ndidi and tielemans, fabinho and Thiago, or gundogan and fernandinho. This leaving him in awkward area where he is an attacking cmf but have the boldness of a CDM, but have no physical capacity and defensive awareness to do a cdm duties, the only thing that I can think of Scholes or riquelme is that he MAKE attacking team better, but if you're losing the midfield battle then he is a ghost. A double pivot cdm covers both atk and defense even in losing position, wants to see the best result of this system? Go try to look at mourinho double pivot systems which beat saf in epl race twice in a row. Its not the age of magician, it's the age of system, deal with it.
@@r3zaful Players like Zidane, Riquelme, Gerrard can play in any era of football, they didn’t needed their teammates to carry them, they were all talismanic players who carried their team on their shoulders. On the other hand, Paul Scholes wasn’t at their level, not even close.
Juan Roman Riquelme, legend. He's the reason I bought a Boca Juniors jersey and why I even follow the Copa Libertadores. If you know about Riquelme you also know about Ortega... Argentina had a glut of talent and Pekerman ruined their chance of a WC win with some awful subs. The strongest team in that 2006 tournament. Not only did he sub off Riquelme, Messi was on the bench!
Finally I found a person who shares my pain about those subs. Julio Cruz over Messi when the game needed pace and guile? Sad day
Pekerman was an excelente coach, but he absolutely bottled that Germany game.
I can't believe you didn't mention about Riquelme's performance at the 2006 world cup
My first ever football player... The one who made me support Argentina. Underrated Gem he is.
I'm jamaican and I have been supporting Argentina since I was a kid and guess who made me a fan?
@@adidjahclarke9278burruchaga
I’m a simple man: I see JRR, I click and hit the like button immediately.
Argentina would've won so many cups with riquelme and Messi at their peaks
In think you meant DiMaria and Riquelme.
You’re not wrong
Nr.10 means: he is no midf central or defensive, wing right or left, striker or forward! Riquelme was pure 10 ! NR.10 has a free role betwen midfielders and forwards!
If pekerman wasn't an idiot argentina could have easily won 2006 world cup with 18 yo messi and Riquelme. But of course messi didn't play a single minute in the decisive game and Riquelme was sunbed at the worst moment 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
You forgot the 2006 world cup, where Riquelme lead the national team with better play of the last 20 years. Even though they lost to the local Germany (in the PK shootout) they could have done more with a bit more luck.
A bit more luck? More like a competent coach. Riquelme got benched at a stupid moment and messi (yes Messi) didn't play a single minute.
@@marcossidoruk8033 es verdad, en 2006 con un técnico mejor Argentina podía haber tenido uno de los mejores equipos de todos los tiempos
@@marcossidoruk8033 so so so true. got benched and replaced with Cambiasso. and dangerous BALLACK took the chance and scored.
I was privileged to see this Yellow Submarine magician in action. What a talent he was!
What a player. Watched him for Villareal against Rangers at Ibrox. A pleasure to watch him work
I met a guy from Argentina and he asked me who is my favorite player of all time and I told him Riquelme and to my surprise he was his brother
Yeah and I’m his dad
yeah and im riquelme grandmother
Riquelme was better than Zidane, one of the greatest in the history of world football. but because of his personality and marketing reasons he is not as valued or appreciated as he deserves. he is the most unique player that has ever played the game, his play style was something nobody could imitate or replicate.
Well saying he was better than Zidane might be an exaggeration but he was crazy good
@@morkujinirukandji4820 I agree, amazing player and a joy to watch, but better than zidane is going a bit too far
@@morkujinirukandji4820 i don't think it's a stretch
@@pabloirusta4731 Thats just because zidane played only in europe and won more riquelme almost never played in europe for a few years
@@pabloirusta4731 he definitely didn't have a better career but in terms on talent they were equal howerver Zidane had a strong mentality, he was a beast and also had way more motivation and work ethic which ultimately made him one of the best players in history, the few times they faced each other Riquelme destroyed Zidane though
Riquelmi was a awesome player. Good old ps2 days, use to play with him.
Miss pes 2006
@@DailyDoseOfFootballYT One of my favourite football games.
not to diss on other players, but i think he was better than Iniesta. Iniesta is a God tier player, i know, but i saw Riquelme´s whole career. He was a beast, but he hadn´t have the spirit to endure the pressure to be in a top european club. However he behave like a champ when he was dismissed in Barcelona. He didn´t complain to Van Gaal, because he said that the coach was at least honest with him. I loved him since he had the number 8 in Boca. Since the very beginning!
Do a video on Palermo. When I went to Camp Nou, I visit their away locker room. They had a display of the best players who have visited the Camp Nou - and I was surprised to see Palermo as one of them. Those who know fútbol know he is amazing
Palermo amazing ...How he can missed penalties kicks...
Martin Palermo? Who averaged 5 goals a season in LA liga?
@@willywonka9785Martín Palermo. The one who made two goals to take a title away from Real Madrid.
Great video, i would only add that the best moment of his career was when he singlehandedly DESTROYED the galacticos Real Madrid in the club world cup final. One of the best individual performances in football history, that can´t be argued
THANK YOU!! I've always wanted you to make this video. THANK YOU. I haven't seen it yet but whatever the outcome THANK YOU
He really does remind me of how zidane plays. It's truly a magic performance.

Dude idk how you don’t have more subs! I’ve been binge watching all of your videos! Thank you so much for all of the content
...so much passion for a game cant stop lovin this guy...
Eyyy, I was really hoping I'd get to see my personal icon Roman on your channel when I recently subscribed! Great video, I love the depth of your research and how fair you score. Couple of notes I noticed didn't make the cut, not sure if it would affect the score, but: I didn't hear any mention of his 2006 world cup performance. There's a historic game vs Serbia Montenegro where they won 6-0 with total possession and a passing percentage at 99, Roman being the playmaker involved. Stuff of legends, in fact, the team only lost in quarter finals after a dubious decision by Argentina's coach Pékerman to sub Roman out, after he was instrumental to the goal that put them ahead. That game went to penalties after Abondanzieri got injured and the rest is history. Also, Iniesta has said that he was very inspired by Riquelme's style, how he controlled the ball and what vision he had for his passes and shots. Considering they only knew each other for a year, I'd say Roman's impact on the players around him made up for the shitty attitude...at least a little bit, lol. Great video, hope to see more of my favorite Argentinian players coming up!
Why Argentina No longer bring out pmayers like him ????
That sub still gives me pain.
You do a great job with these videos. Thank u!!
I remember his Villarreal playing days, i was still young but i know how good Villarreal was
I love that you give players their just due but also give an honest assessment about how good they really were. Pundits from these eras tend to look at players with rose-color lenses sometimes, which gives us the impression that some players were better than they really were. I appreciate the balance your channel strikes.
Great comment.
@dailydoseoffootball • thanks a lot brother for videos on these legends... I feel nostalgic watching your videos... Brings tears to my eyes watching some of them... Miss those times... The best time to have watched played and lived football... JOGA BONITO - Love from INDIA
Hard to say he's 6/10 in mentality. He was a true leader, defending anda protecting His team-mates out of the pitch. He used to show His best versión in the hardest and most importants matchs (with Boca at least). And, the most important, he had the courage to Defy Diego when they had a disagreement (no one did it a win before of aftee Riquelme). For me, as Boca's fan, Diego Is god ; but Riquelme Is the best we ever had)
Great videos. Continue to feature legends please. Respect, California. 🙏🏽
Nice doc man
He was an absolute genius.❤️
He was amazing. My son's middle name is Román.
I don't think a guy famous for playing his best matches in the most important matches should have a 6 in mentality. Also, he kept playing very well despite some very bad teams that Boca had from 2009 onwards
Amazing player. Often forgotten but I never have.
@dailydoseoffootball you are truly an amazing narrator. Keep up the good work

Can't smile enough hearing "Juan Joman Jiquelme"
Can you do Puyol? Btw great vid!
Probably if young people wont never understand how amazing riquelme was back in the day. Extremely underrated player. Probably the most underrated player of all time. He hasnt too many goals and assists and isnt fast and strong like what todays football demands. Imagine how great he was. When his best games were against toughest teams of those times. Watch his games against. Real Madrid (of zidane figo r9) Barcelona (ronaldinho deco xavi puyol and marquez) inter, brazil (ronaldo, adriano, kaka, ronaldinho, r. Carlos) where he dismantled these galacticos single handedly

Remember when Riquelme and Diego Forlan played for Villareal? If memory serves me correctly, Forlan became the top scorer in La Liga that season and simply credited it to Riquelme's genius. I think they crashed out the UEFA Champion's League in the semi-finals that year. He was such a joy to watch. Easily in the top 10 best footballers of all time alongside Del Piero & Rui Costa
So many underrated players in history so many

he said something key... back then their was space to create marvels in Foot ball now competition is too tight
I could watch him all day
Again, I would completely dump the Icon status and trophy cabinet categories, because that's completely irrelevant to the real quality of the player and it keeps proving again and again that it can render even the best players as not as good as they really were. Besides, you gave Riquelme Icon factor 9/10 based on how he's viewed in his homeland and completely disregard how he's viewed in Europe but did the exact opposite with Nedved and some other players. The same with trophy cabinet. Nedved has silver and bronze from Euro, many Serie A titles, many international individual trophies and Ballon D'or and his trophy cabinet is objectively bigger and still he got lower score.
But you have to factor in that argentinians worship Riquelme as if he was a god and trophy cabinet really gives players an equal ranking
This should be argued about Cristiano being a Top 5 player of all time, accolades and trophies don't make you one of the best ever, but in reality... He's not Individually close to other greats and is just a Goalscorer.
Facts man. If trophies were so important then maxwell would be one ofthe greatest ever lmao. Obviously not the case
@@andreomorais2615 then you have to factor that Czechs and also many Italians worship Nedved even more. He's Czech and Juventus legend. It's irrelevant argument.
He lived in the shadow of Maradona as a lot of Argentinian players of that generation. Everyone still considers players like Riquelme, Aimar, Saviola etc as failures as they failed to live to the expectations but the expectation was Maradona himself. Only Messi managed to dethrone Maradona.
My favourite 10 ever . I miss him every f....sunday . Art , no sport .....pure Art
