I'm guessing there's other extra data that gets tracked when a workout is triggered, but isn't always being tracked any other time (to preserve power and stuff like that probably) Edit: the watch can detect for movements that may indicate a workout, and so that's why it asks if you would like to start workout if you haven't already started one manually yourself

  • Thanks for making. I noticed a bias in the experiment that might make doing it a second time helpful. The two watches that were actually on your wrist in the normal position (Pixel & Galaxy) gave more accurate results. To be scientific, I think it would be great to do the same walk again with the watches swapped, to see if the Garmin & Apple Watch get more accurate when they’re in the natural position. Just curious.

    • @@LeSkinnerthat's not gonna make a huge difference. Arm length, stride length, arm swing, and watch positioning all vary greatly from person to person. More so than the difference of positioning an inch off. In practice, there could be some affect, but you wouldn't think it would be such a big difference. Technically, if there's any affect, if the user has longer than average arms, wearing the watches higher would likely increase their accuracy, and wearing lower would decrease accuracy. The reverse should be true for people with shorter than average arms, if there's an affect at all. I'd say he has longer than average arms, so you'd think if anything the watches higher up would be more accurate, if positioning affects accuracy at all.

I guess they are pushing us to give 105% effort! I guess it’s more accurate with GPS used in conjunction, but what’s strange for me, it usually shows I burned more calories with GPS off just using the motion sensors. If it’s under counting using sensors, then why does it think I did more? Makes me wonder if there is a wide variance over in addition to under.

  • I think for most watches simple walking or running is the easiest case when counting steps. Major differences start to appear in how watches intepret random daily hand movement as steps. Especially Fitbits have been notoriously bad in counting your daily step count by giving you steps basically from any hand movement. Fitbit's daily step counts tend to be wayyy over estimated. Then there's Polar who even tells that they don't even count real steps but their own equivalent steps meaning they covert any activity to steps. What your daily activity would equal to just walking this many steps. So, in the end, it is almost impossible to reliably compare different brand's step counts with each other. Steps are mainly good for showing your own baseline with a certain watch and how your activity varies daily, weekly, monthly, etc.

    @nylotical@nylotical4 ай бұрын
    • I wonder if the wrist location actually matters or if they use other sensor data to improve stride identification over time. It might be because those watches need to be recalibrated. Or it could be that tightness on the arm impacts how they count a step, with loser watches being more sensitive. He could compare four 1000 step walks wearing four of each watch to see if they had any variability.

      @sixty-six@sixty-six4 ай бұрын
    • This would vary based on your body type. Realistically, if your arms are longer than average, then having them higher up on your wrist would be a closer placement to people with average arm length. And then if you had shorter than average arms, the closer to the wrist would be closer to the average arm length user. For me, higher up the arm makes the steps more accurate, but for my partner who is shorter than me, higher up the wrist makes it less accurate. Body type seems to play a big role, and the natural guess would be that someone with long arms like marques, that he'd increase accuracy by wearing it higher.
